  • The present study explores mathematics teachers' understanding of division by zero and their approaches to explaining the impossibility of division by zero. This study analyzes Chinese and Korean middle school mathematics teachers' responses to the teaching task of explaining the impossibility of dividing 7 by zero, and examples of teachers' reasoned explanations for their answers are presented. The findings from this study suggest that most Korean teachers offer multiple types of mathematical explanations for justifying the impossibility of division by zero, while Chinese teachers' explanations were more uniform and based less on mathematical ideas than those of their Korean counterparts. Another finding from this study is that teachers' particular conceptions of zero were strongly associated with their justifications for the impossibility of division by zero, and the influence of the teachers' conceptions of zero was revealed as a barrier in composing a well-reasoned explanation for the impossibility of division by zero. One of the practical implications of this study is those teachers' basic attitudes toward always attempting to give explanations for mathematical facts or mathematical concepts do not seem to be derived solely from their sufficient knowledge of the facts or concepts of mathematics.

  • In this theory, we explained the impossibility of the motion or miving of the hole that has been recognized to be a carrier, by giving some fundamental reasons. We treated energy gap and impurity concentration, in p- and n-type region, as functions of the mobility that is one of te factors which determine current quantity, and analyzed the primary electron theory as a carrier by introducing 2 hypotheses.

  • Change of circumstances subsequent to formation of international business contract raises two issues on both parties' obligation to perform business transaction concerned. One is impossibility of performance due to events beyond control of parties and the other is adaption of contract. In Anglo-American Law such an impossibility of performance is provided by the doctrine of Frustration and the doctrine of Practicability(UCC 2-615). In practice a "force majeure" clause should be included in contract defining the parties' mutual rights and duties if certain events beyond their control occur to safeguard themselves against possible impossibility. On the other hand the tendency of international trade is that alongside sales contracts, there are contract for supplies, for furnishing raw materials, for building industrial complexes, and transferring technology. One characteristic of these agreements is their duration. For in order to carry out these agreements, it is necessary to complete a series of closely interrelated operations which, in the normal course of events, take place over a number of years. It is often difficult for the parties, when finalizing their contract, to have a full grasp of all of the factors governing their relations. With a view to resolving difficulties such as compromise the continuous performance of a contract, parties may insert a regulatory clause in their contract providing for intervention by a third person after stating in specific and detailed fashion the circumstances in which their contract may be adapted.

  • The automobile manufacture is a typical integrated assembly production that the numerous parts are committed sequentially to the assembly line. In this type of automobile manufacture, WBS (white body storage) and PBS (paint body storage) are operated to adjust the production sequence and to buffer. Starvation (impossibility of production owing to the insufficient supply) or blocking (impossibility of production owing to the over capacity) could occur in some chance, hence, both storages (WBS, PBS) are integrated as a prevention. This system is called integrated storage. In this paper, we suggest the simulation model of 'WBS-PBS integrated storage' and methodology of operation considering both 'Color grouping' and 'Option leveling.'

  • This paper aims to examine Alan Turing's life at the centenary of his birth and to discuss a philosophical implication of his work by concentrating on halting theorem particularly. Turing negatively solved Hilbert's decision problem by proving impossibility of solving halting problem. In this paper I claim that the impossibility implies limits of reason, and accordingly that the marginality in cognition and/or in action should be recognized.

  • This study investigated children's cognitions of physically impossible events by characteristics of the events. The 67 subjects were 3-, 5-, and 7-year old children from one day care center and one elementary school in Seoul. Children's responses to questions regarding the events were taped and transcribed. Cognition of the events was measured by recognition of impossibility, possibility of replication, and reasons for the possibility of replication of the events. Data were analyzed by ANOVA(repeated measures), and Pearson's correlation. Children's recognition of the impossibility of the events varied by type of task : Recognition of gravity tasks was different from irreversibility tasks, but there were no differences between recognition of irreversibility and gravity and between irreversibility and object permanence. The possibility of replication correlated significantly with reasons given by the children.

  • The review of known decisions showed that currently there are no systems and technologies for supporting the decision about the possibility of concluding the civil law agreements for medical, therapeutic and dental services. The paper models the decision-making support process on the possibility of concluding the civil law agreements for medical, therapeutic and dental services, which is the theoretical basis for the development of rules, methods and system for supporting the decision about the possibility of concluding the civil law agreements for medical, therapeutic and dental services. The paper also developed the system for supporting the decision about the possibility of concluding the civil law agreements for medical, therapeutic and dental services, which automatically and free determines the possibility or impossibility of concluding the corresponding civil law agreement for the provision of a corresponding medical service. In the case of formation of a conclusion about the possibility of concluding the agreement, further conclusion and signing of the corresponding agreement takes place. In the case of forming a conclusion about the impossibility of concluding the agreement, a request is made for finalizing the relevant agreement for the provision of the relevant medical service, indicating the reasons for the impossibility of concluding the agreement - missing essential conditions in the agreement. After finalization, the agreement can be analyzed again by the developed system for supporting the decision.

  • The purpose of this study was to explain, using Jacques Lacan's theory of desire, how Ellen Olenska functions as the object petit a in her relationship with Newland Archer and to connect the impossibility of Newland and Ellen's love with the impossibility of desire, in Edith Wharton's The Age of Innocence. In New York society in the 1870s, the unpleasant truth was avoided, personal opinions were excluded, no room for imagination existed, and other-ness was expelled. In that society, Newland realized that true love and true emotions were lacking in his life. For Newland, Ellen was the gap in New York society and the object that could fill that gap. Ellen functioned as the object petit a. But the romance between Newland and Ellen was forbidden in New York society, where everything was dominated by strict social codes, and especially because Newland was engaged to Ellen's cousin, May Welland. Ellen became inaccessible to Newland and this set Newland's desire for Ellen in motion. He idealized Ellen as the objet petit a, based on the fantasy that she would fill the void in his life. However, at every critical moment, Newland delayed unification with Ellen by resorting to social codes. His actions betrayed that the goal of his desire was not the fulfillment, but the reproduction of desire, with its circular movement. His decision not to see Ellen in Paris again at the end of the novel can be interpreted as Newland's effort to maintain Ellen as the inaccessible object, objet petit a, forever. It is this impossibility of desire that the romance of Newland and Ellen is predicated upon. Another purpose of this study was to expand this impossibility of desire to the relationship between man and woman and to interpret The Age of Innocence as a story showing the characteristics of the relationship between the sexes. The relationship between Newland and Ellen shows that there is no harmonious relationship between the sexes and that woman exists only as a fantasy object, objet petit a for man.

  • Purpose: This study tries to identify and clarify the concept of fear of dementia. Methods: The hybrid model method was used to perform a conceptual analysis of fear for dementia. Results from both the theoretical review of 35 studies and the field study with 8 community-dwelling older adults were included in the final stage. Results: Fear for dementia had 4 dimensions with 14 attributes including cognitive factors (direct experience of precursor symptoms of dementia, indirect experience of dementia, preliminary knowledge of dementia, impossibility of cognitive control, and confidence in dementia), emotional factors (negative feelings and pessimistic thoughts), social factors (social isolation, economic instability, embarrassment), and behavioral factors (existing health problems, making efforts to maintain health, impossibility of body control, peripheral autonomic nervous system response) along with 34 indicators. Conclusion: This study is meaningful because it reveals the attributes of Korean elderly adults' fear for dementia. In addition, the results may serve as a basis for the early assessment and management of fear for dementia.
