Purpose: This study was performed to investigate the release behavior of bioactive materials as a BMP-2 embedding on the porous titanium implant. Methods: Porous Ti implant samples were fabricated by sintering of spherical Ti powders in a high vacuum furnace. Specimens diameter and height were 4mm and 10mm. Embedding materials were used to stamp ink. Sectional images, porosity and release behavior of porous Ti implants were evaluated by scanning electron microscope(SEM), mercury porosimeter and UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometer. Results: Internal pore structure was formed fully open pore. Average pore size and porosity were $8.993{\mu}m$ and 8.918%. Embedding materials were released continually and slowly. Conclusion: Porous Ti implant was fabricated successfully by sintering method. Particles are necking strongly each other and others portions were vacancy. Therefore bioactive materials will be able to embedding to porous Ti implants. If the development of the fusion implant of the bioactive material will be able to have the chance to several patients.
The metallic implant materials are widely used in biomedical industries due to their specific mechanical strenth, corrosion registance, and superior biocompatability. These metallic materials, however, suffer from the stress-shielding effect and the generation of artifacts in the magnetic resonance imaging exam. In the present study, we develope a Zr-based alloys for the biomedical implant materials with low elastic modulus and low magnetic susceptibility. The Zr-7Si-xSn alloys were fabricated by an arc melting process. The elastic modulus was 24~31 GPa of the zirconium-based alloy. The average magnetic susceptibility value of the Zr-7Si-xSn alloy was 1.25 × 10-8cm3g-1. The average Icorr value of the Zr-7Si-xSn alloy was 0.2 ㎂/cm2. The Sn added zirconium alloy, Zr-7Si-xSn, is very interested and attractive as a biomaterial that reduces the stress-shielding effect caused by the difference of elastic modulus between human bone and metallic implant.
Purpose: To investigate whether there are specific surgical or clinical conditions where the use of autogenous bone (AB) is superior to the use of bone substitutes (BSs) for maxillary sinus floor augmentation (MSFA). Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 386 implants after MSFA in 178 patients. The implants were divided into five groups according to the sinus graft material used. Risk factors for implant failure in MSFA, and correlation between residual bone height (RBH) and graft materials in terms of implant survival were investigated. To investigate risk factors for implant failure in MSFA, implant survival according to graft materials, patients' sex/age, surgical site, RBH, healing period prior to prosthetic loading, staged- or simultaneous implantation with MSFA, the crown-to-implant ratio, prosthetic type, implant diameter, and opposite dentition were evaluated. Result: The cumulative 2- and 5-year survival rates of implants placed in the grafted sinus (independent of the graft material used) were 98.7% and 97.3%, respectively. None of the investigated variables were identified as significant risk factors for implant failure. There was also no statistical significance in implant survival between graft materials. Conclusion: There were no specific surgical conditions in which AB was superior to BSs in terms of implant survival after MSFA.

PURPOSE. This study evaluated the influence of abutment materials on the stability of the implant-abutment joint in internal conical connection type implant systems. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Internal conical connection type implants, cement-retained abutments, and tungsten carbide-coated abutment screws were used. The abutments were fabricated with commercially pure grade 3 titanium (group T3), commercially pure grade 4 titanium (group T4), or Ti-6Al-4V (group TA) (n=5, each). In order to assess the amount of settlement after abutment fixation, a 30-Ncm tightening torque was applied, then the change in length before and after tightening the abutment screw was measured, and the preload exerted was recorded. The compressive bending strength was measured under the ISO14801 conditions. In order to determine whether there were significant changes in settlement, preload, and compressive bending strength before and after abutment fixation depending on abutment materials, one-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD post-hoc test was performed. RESULTS. Group TA exhibited the smallest mean change in the combined length of the implant and abutment before and after fixation, and no difference was observed between groups T3 and T4 (P>.05). Group TA exhibited the highest preload and compressive bending strength values, followed by T4, then T3 (P<.001). CONCLUSION. The abutment material can influence the stability of the interface in internal conical connection type implant systems. The strength of the abutment material was inversely correlated with settlement, and positively correlated with compressive bending strength. Preload was inversely proportional to the frictional coefficient of the abutment material.
PURPOSE. Zirconia materials have been used for implant-retained restorations, but the stress distribution of zirconia is not entirely clear. The aim of this study is to evaluate the stress distribution and risky areas caused by the different design of zirconia restorations on the atrophic bone of the posterior maxilla. MATERIALS AND METHODS. An edentulous D4-type bone model was prepared from radiography of an atrophic posterior maxilla. Monolithic zirconia and zirconia-fused porcelain implant-retained restorations were designed as splinted or non-splinted. 300-N occlusal forces were applied obliquely. Stress analyses were performed using a 3D FEA program. RESULTS. According to stress analysis, the bone between the 1) molar implant and the 2) premolar in the non-splinted monolithic zirconia restoration model was stated as the riskiest area. Similarly, the maximum von Mises stress value was detected on the bone of the non-splinted monolithic zirconia models. CONCLUSION. Splinting of implant-retained restorations can be more critical for monolithic zirconia than zirconia fused to porcelain for the longevity of the bone.

Titanium and its alloy have been widely used in dental implant and orthopedic prostheses. Electrochemical characteristics of dental implant in the various simulated body fluids have been researched by using electrochemical methods. Ti-6Al-4V alloy implant was used for corrosion test in 0.9% NaCl, artificial saliva and simulated body fluids. The surface morphology was observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The electrochemical stability was investigated using potentiosat (EG&G Co, 263A). The corrosion surface was observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). From the results of potentiodynamic test in various solution, the current density of implant tested in SBF and AS solution was lower than that of implant tested in 0.9% NaCl solution. From the results of passive film stability test, the variation of current density at constant 250 mV showed the consistent with time in the case of implant tested in SBF and AS solution, whereas, the current density at constant 250mV in the case of implant tested in 0.9% NaCl solution showed higher compared to SBF and AS solution as time increased. From the results of cyclic potentiodynamic test, the pitting potential and |$E_{pit}\;-\;E_{corr}$| of implant tested in SBF and AS solution were higher than those of implant tested in 0.9% NaCl solution.
A single electro-discharge-sintering (EDS) pulse (1.0 kJ/0.7 g), from a $300{\mu}F$ capacitor, was applied to atomized spherical Ti-6Al-4V powder in a low vacuum to produce porous-surfaced implant compacts. A solid core surrounded by a porous layer was formed by a discharge in the middle of the compact. XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) was used to study the surface characteristics of the implant material. C, O, and Ti were the main constituents, with smaller amounts of Al, V, and N. The implant surface was lightly oxidized and was primarily in the form of $TiO_2$ with a small amount of metallic Ti. A lightly etched EDS implant sample showed the surface form of metallic Ti, indicating that EDS breaks down the oxide film of the as-received Ti-6Al-4V powder during the discharge process. The EDS Ti-6Al-4V implant surface also contained small amounts of aluminum oxide in addition to $TiO_2$. However, V detected in the EDS Ti-6Al-4V implant surface, did not contribute to the formation of the oxide film..

PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the resistance to deformation under static overloading by measuring yield and fracture strength, and to analyze the failure characteristics of implant assemblies made of different titanium grades and connections. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Six groups of implant assemblies were fabricated according to ISO 14801 (n=10). These consisted of the combinations of 3 platform connections (external, internal, and morse tapered) and 2 materials (titanium grade 2 and titanium grade 4). Yield strength and fracture strength were evaluated with a computer-controlled Universal Testing Machine, and failed implant assemblies were classified and analyzed by optical microscopy. The data were analyzed using the One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Student's t-test with the level of significance at P=.05. RESULTS. The group $IT4_S$ had the significantly highest values and group IT2 the lowest, for both yield strength and fracture strength. Groups $IT4_N$ and ET4 had similar yield and fracture strengths despite having different connection designs. Group MT2 and group IT2 had significant differences in yield and fracture strength although they were made by the same material as titanium grade 2. The implant system of the similar fixture-abutment interfaces and the same materials showed the similar characteristics of deformation. CONCLUSION. A longer internal connection and titanium grade 4 of the implant system is advantageous for static overloading condition. However, it is not only the connection design that affects the stability. The strength of the titanium grade as material is also important since it affects the implant stability. When using the implant system made of titanium grade 2, a larger diameter fixture should be selected in order to provide enough strength to withstand overloading.
Dental implant has recently become one of the most viable treatment options for regaining the oral function and dental aesthetics compared with conventional fixed or removable dentures. Dental implants vary in material, dimensions, geometries, surface properties, and interface geometries. It has been reported that there has been a proliferation of manufacturers who produce implants using various materials and surface treatments, and the dentist needs to select from over 2,000 different dental implants and abutments in a specific treatment situation. Unfortunately, however, no metrics have been specifically identified for the purpose of quality assessment and selection of an appropriate dental implant. This study aims to provide practical guidelines for quality assessment of dental implant based on clinical data. Like other medical devices and materials, the superiority related to specific characteristics of the dental implant needs to be verified through extensive clinical studies. The procedures of clinical monitoring for dental implants have been proposed along with a case study to exemplify the usefulness of clinical monitoring for the purpose of continuous quality improvement in medical industry.

PURPOSE. This study evaluated the influence of prosthesis weight and number of implants on the bone tissue microstrain. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Fifteen (15) fixed full-arch implant-supported prosthesis designs were created using a modeling software with different numbers of implants (4, 6, or 8) and prosthesis weights (10, 15, 20, 40, or 60 g). Each solid was imported to the computer aided engineering software and tetrahedral elements formed the mesh. The material properties were assigned to each solid with isotropic and homogeneous behavior. The friction coefficient was set as 0.3 between all the metallic interfaces, 0.65 for the cortical bone-implant interface, and 0.77 for the cancellous bone-implant interface. The standard earth gravity was defined along the Z-axis and the bone was fixed. The resulting equivalent strain was assumed as failure criteria. RESULTS. The prosthesis weight was related to the bone strain. The more implants installed, the less the amount of strain generated in the bone. The most critical situation was the use of a 60 g prosthesis supported by 4 implants with the largest calculated magnitude of 39.9 mm/mm, thereby suggesting that there was no group able to induce bone remodeling simply due to the prosthesis weight. CONCLUSION. Heavier prostheses under the effect of gravity force are related to more strain being generated around the implants. Installing more implants to support the prosthesis enables attenuating the effects observed in the bone. The simulated prostheses were not able to generate harmful values of peri-implant bone strain.
