文化的核心主旨凝結為其價值意涵, 「羽化登仙」集中反映道教文化的終極價值訴求。從文字學視閾探究「羽」, 「化」, 「登」, 「仙」, 有助於我們透視道教神仙信仰這層神秘面紗背後的生命理念, 體知功夫與境界追求, 以及生命修為與精神超越之間特有的內在理路。其中, 「神仙」可謂玄門修士的人生信念, 「羽化」指代其煉養功夫, 「登真」表徵生命能級攀越。「羽化登仙」寓道教文化價值目標, 煉養功夫與生命境界於一體, 乃玄門修士至上價值追求與生命終極鵠的之完美集結。与之相较, 「大巡」「道通真境」, 既主张道人「身心改造」「精神开辟」, 更强调个人修道服务, 服从于「地上天国建设」, 二者统一于「后天仙境」生命价值理想之中。

The purpose of this study is to apply iconology to discover the symbolic system of imaginary animals focused on four representative auspicious animals in Korean folk paintings. Study methods included literature review of folk paintings, iconological analytics books, and articles. A total of 16 folk paintings of four auspicious animals in the Joseon Dynasty were analyzed using Panofsky's iconology. The four auspicious animals were Yong(dragon), Bonghwang(the eastern version of the phoenix), Shingoo (divine turtle), and Kirin(one-horned combination of a dragon and horse). According to iconological analysis, Yong is a typical symbol of royal authority, a deity of water as an object of respect with a remarkable talent of transformation, and in iconographical interpretation, represents reverence for transcendent power. Bonhwang is the symbol of a king, sun worship, the emblem of nobility and integrity, and in iconographical interpretation, the psychic bing in the sky. Shingoo is fortune prophecy, longevity and immortality, an envoy of deity, and according to iconographical interpretation, the organic view of the world. Kirin is a divine benign creature, a symbol of talent and honor, mediator between sky and earth, and in iconographical interpretation, an expression of Confucian ideology. This study produced three results. First, the four auspicious animals projected the human hope to overcome human limitations through divine creatures with mythical abilities. Second, they reflected everyday common hopes and values of pursuing fortunes and happiness. Third, the four auspicious animals' iconology was not independent of each other; it seemed to be common to and combined with each other.

Folk belief, which originated with the rise of human existence is a fundamental and comprehensive mode of living that reflects sociocultural conditions. Adherents of folk belief accept a certain thing to be true and real without scientific authority and absolute certainty. Taboo can be seen as a king of folk belief. The object of this study is to examine the taboos in relation to the manufacturing process and the quality of the shroud and to shrouding customs. I will also try to find out the meaning and significance in this. Through this task, I hope to contribute to the enhanced understanding of the cultural characteristics, the spiritual life, and the views on after life of the Korean people. In Korea, it is considered to be propitious to prepare the shroud on the intercalary month of the leap year , as it allows one to enjoy longevity healthy and sound. Moreover, as this belief gives credence and repose while preparing for the “final departure”, this custom is relatively well observed. From the taboo concerning leap months, we infer that death as viewed as a commencement of a new life, which reveals a positive view on afterlife. This can be seen as a return to the origin of anti-universal space in this “bonus” month of anti-universal time. Taboos on the manufacturing process of the shroud is related to the belief that it allows the deceased to go the nest world without any hesistation or disturbances. This symbolizes the immortality of the human soul: I. e. that the human spirit does not end in this world but continues on to the next. Taboos concerning the preparation process of the shroud as well as various other taboos are related to the belief that preparation for the shroud should be done in sincerity and secredness with a thoughtful consideration for the deceased. This can be perceived as an implication to sanctity for the dead.

Anticancer effect of methanol extract of Caesalpinia sappan L. on oral carcinoma (KB) and osteosarcoma (HOS) cells were investigated in this study. In order to elucidate the anticancer mechanism of Caesalpinia sappan L, we analyzed telomerase inhibitory effect of the methanol extract of Caesalpinia sappan L. In addition we prepared 5 fraction samples according to its polarity differences and analyzed anticancer effects on oral carcinoma and osteosarcoma cells. Following results are obtained in this study. 1. 50% cell proliferation inhibitory value ($IC_{50}$) of the methanol extract of Caesalpinia sappan L. against oral carcinoma (KB) cells and osteosarcoma (HOS) cells were $9.0{\mu}g/ml$ and $10.9{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. 2. The methanol extract of Caesalpinia sappan L. showed inhibitory effect of telomerase which is required for cancer cell immortality. Therefore, it seems that the anticancer effect of methanol extract of Caesalpinia sappan is at least partially due to telomerase inhibitory effect. 3. Five fraction samples were prepared according to its polarity and 88.7% of ingredient of total methanol extract was transferred to ethylacetate fraction. Thin layer chromatography analysis showed that dichloromethane fraction contained ingredient with relatively high polarity and ethylacetate fraction contained similar ingredient found in total methanol extract. 4. Anticancer effect was observed in n-hexane, dichloromethane, and ethylacetate fractions. The highest anticancer effect was found in dichloromethane fraction which had $IC_{50}$ value of 4.4 and $>4.0{\mu}g/ml$ against oral carcinoma (KB) cells and osteosarcoma (HOS) cells, respectively.

These days, the fantastic in opposition to classic beauty becomes a genre of creative body expression. The purpose of this study was to analyze the expressive characteristics of body types and meanings in recent fantastic fashion illustration. The method of this study was to analyze recent documentaries, fashion books, internet web site and so forth. The results were as follows: In literatures, pictures and movies, the category of the fantastic body's expressive types were classified as dominant mutant based on SF, multi body or fragment body by disruption, heterogeneous compound based on myth, personified humanoid and non substance in supernatural boundary. The dominant mutant based on SF was expressed image morphing, composition of machine image with body and modern metamorphosis of classic SF body. It means propensity to post-feminism and reservation of meaning analysis based on human unconsciousness. The multi body or fragment body by disruption in fashion illustration was expressed distorted composition of same body pictures, replacement of different bodies, deconstruction and partial omission of body and composition of meaning or non meaning images. It means permanence of self and basic narcissism. The heterogeneous compound based on myth was expressed general composition or optical illusion of various and aggressive animal motive. It means reinterpretation of original myth, metaphor of basic femme fatale, pursuit of permanence and sign of primitive mind in unconsciousness. The personified humanoid was expressed real human body description of mannequin or ball joint doll and anthropomorphism of robot image. It means representative satisfaction and nostalgia of childhood. The non substance in supernatural boundary was expressed grotesque description of ghost, zombie, vampire, angel, fairy, using of symbolic red, black color and non body. It means human's basic desire about immortality and taboo. Through the result of these study, the expression of fantastic body in fashion illustration will expend expressive method and we will understand human and cultural codes of today.

Background and Objectives: The expression of telomerase, a ribonucleoprotein complex, has been detected in tissues from many human cancers, but not in the majority of normal tissues except germ cell. It is believed that the activation of telomerase is linked to celluar immortality and may playa role in tumorigenesis. Human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) has been identified as a putative catalytic subunit of human telomerase and its expression is closely correlated with telomease activity. We studied the expression of hTERT in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and resection margin by immunohistochemistry for hTERT and evaluate the correlation between hTERT expression and clinical data in HNSCC. Materials and Methods: We performed a immunohistochemistry in 17 cases of HNSCC and 10 cases of resection margins, histologically normal. The correlations between the hTERT expression and the clinical data in HNSCC were analyzed. Result: hTERT immunoreactivities were detected in 14 of 17 (82.4%) HNSCC, 1 of 10 (10%) resection margin. No correlation was observed between clinical data and hTERT expression in HNSCC. Conclusion: hTERT is activated in HNSCC and its expression is independent from clinical data of patients.

Objective: Telomerase, a specialized ribonucleoprotein polymerase associated with cellular immortality, is expressed by most malignant cells and is inactive in most normal somatic cells. The assays of telomerase activity in various tumors have provided both diagnostic and prognostic information. This study was carried out to determine whether telomerase activity could be useful in distinguishing benign and malignant thyroid diseasees. Materials & Methods: Telomerase activity was determined using Oncor $TRAP_{EZE}^{TM}ELISA$ Telomerase Detection Kit for performing PCR-based telomeric repeat amplification protocol (TRAP) assay followed by ELISA detection in both normal and tumor tissues of 23 adenomatous hyperplasias, 12 follicular adenomas, 4 follicular carcinomas, 16 papillary carcinomas, 4 Hashimoto's thyroiditises and 3 malignant lymphomas. We also examined all cases microscopically to review the status of lymphoid infiltrate. Results: Of the 62 cases, extensive lymphoid infiltrates were contained in 20 tumor tissues(4 Hashimoto's thyroiditises, 3 malignant lymphomas, 6 adenomatous hyperplasias and 7 papillary carcinomas), all of which showed positive telomerase activity. All the normal tissues without lymphoid infiltrates(n=43) did not express telomerase activity. Of 42 tumor tissues without lymphoid infiltrates, 37(88.0%) showed positive telomerase activity: 13 of 17 adenomatous hyperplasias(76.5%), 11 of 12 follicular adenomas(91.7%), 4 of 4 follicular carcinomas(100.0%) and 9 of 9 papillary carcinomas(100.0%). Conclusions: Our methods showed high sensitivity in the detection of telomerase activity and the exclusion of lymphoid infiltrates may be important in telomerase assay. In our work, the measurement of telomerase activity was not useful in distinguishing benign and malignant thyroid diseases.

When Hart Crane′s poem cycle The Bridge was published in 1930, a group of influential reviewers accused Crane of immaturity, sentimentality, and lack of focus. They condemned crane′s wayward, fuzzy mysticism as backwards-looking and self-defeating. Even sympathetic critics, such as Harold Bloom, have consistently portrayed Crane′s poetry as the pyrotechnic final fizzle of late romanticism. These persistent, public reservations, however, have not prevented an impressive proliferation in secondary literature concerning Crane since the late 1960s. His promiscuity, alcoholism, erratic behavior, relative poverty, tragic death, and total commitment to art have since earned him the labels of New World Rimbaud and proto-Beat. His colorful career thus explains in part his retrospective fame. Nevertheless, living hard and dying young do not guarantee artistic immortality. This article poses questions as to why Crane has mattered so much to subsequent generations of U.S. readers and what these readers find so compelling in his poetry. The answer, I would argue, lies in Crane′s idiosyncratic use of language. Far from striving for transparency, he writes in an inimitably obstructive, artificial manner. There is something seductive and absurd in his wild use of words here, I would further argue, we discover the reason behind both Crane′s enduring appeal and his supposed inadequacy as a writer. Crane did "torture" syntax, semantics, and conventional associations, not because he saw his unusual language as an eccentric mannerism but because he saw it as a tool in the service of constructing a "myth of America" and reintegrating the human and divine. Understanding thy he considered this to be the case clarifies Crane′s achievement and illuminates why his work still seems so relevant today.

Purpose: This study attempted to propose the basic framework for spiritual nursing intervention by understanding live spiritual experiences of terminal cancer patients. The study duration was from July 2002 to January 2003, and the subjects of this study were patients who were expected to live less than six months. The number of subjects was six and the average time of each interview was about an hour. Method: The data were analyzed using the method of phenomenological study analysis, which Colaizzi (1978) proposed. Result: Through live spiritual experiences. terminal cancer patients showed complex emotion about the Absolute, human, disease, and death: depended on the Absolute through recognizing death and spiritual acknowledgement: recollected the past life: accepted death believing salvation and immortality: recovered relationships with others through forgiving and reconciling with the Absolute and neighbors. Also, they pursued the meaning of pain. death, and life while feeling pain: demanded love and concern to the Absolute and neighbors: had a sense of futility about life and a hope for the future life: transcendental energy towards the world after death. Wishing to have a peaceful end to life. they felt peaceful and comfortable. Conclusion: Terminal cancer patients want to meet a peaceful end to life with a hope for the future and accept the meaning of death with peace and comfort minds(##-minds), which will allow them to carry on peaceful and satisfactory days for the rest of their lives. Thus, it is very important for caregivers to let them have spiritual experiences and care for them.
