Synthesis and Characterization of Aromatic Polyamideamide-imide and Polyamide-imide copolymers

  • The polyamide-amide-imide (PAAI) was synthesized by reacting 4,4'-diaminobenzanilide (DBA) with trimellitic anhydride chloride using a two-stage heating. The precursor of polyamide-acids was formed at first stage and followed by the formation of imide of PAAI. Two polyamide-imides (PAIs) were prepared from benzidine (BZ) or 4,4'-diaminodiphenylether (DPE) with trimellitic anhydride chloride. These three polymers had glass transition temperature in the temperature range of $240-250^{\circ}C$. X-ray data were obtained on thin film specimens cured at $250^{\circ}C$. There was a minimal kind of short-range order consisting of the most probable distances between neighboring chains. The average segmental spacing of short-range order decreased in the order of polymers obtained from 4,4'-diaminobenzanilide (DBA), polyamide-imide, and 4,4'-diaminodiphenylether (DPE). The imidization of three polyamide-imides was confirmed by $^{15}N$ MAS NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy. $^{15}N$ NMR spectrum of cured polyamide-imide showed imide $^{15}N$ peak, thereby providing an evidence for the imidization of three polyamide-imides.

  • In this study, we investigated the pretilt angle generation and liquid crystal (LC) alignment by ultraviolet (UV) exposure during imidization of polyimide on the polymer with side chain. The generated pretilt angle of nematic (N) LC using in-situ photo-alignment method was smaller than that of the conventional UV photo-alignment method. Also, the generated pretilt angle of NLC tends to increase by annealing.

  • This paper describes the imidization of PAAS(polyamic acid alkylamine salts) Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films and the electrical properties of PAAS and polyimide(PI) LB films, The imidization conditons were investigated by TGA(Thermal Gravi-tational Analysis). FT-IR and UV/ visible absorption spectra. A thermal imidiczation was peformed at 300$^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. The electrical properties of the PAAS and polymide LB films were measured by current-voltate(L-V) characteristics It shows that the electrical condcutivity of PL LB films is about 10 $\^$-15/S/cm which is two orders of magnetiude lower than that of the PAAS LB films A Schottky effect was also observed in both films.

  • Poly(4, 4'-diphenyl ether pyromellitamic acid) was prepared from pyromellitic anhydride with 4, 4'-diamino diphenyl ether by means of low-temperature solution polymeriztion. The reation was exothermic and very fast when carried out at room temperature. The synthesized poly(4, 4'-diphenyl ether pyromellitamic acid) was converted to poly(4, 4'-diphenyl ether pyromellitimide) by thermal dehydrocyclization. FTIR analysis was widely used as a means of determining the course of imidization from intensity of characteristic bands of the imide ring at $1790cm^{-1}$ and $1490cm^{-1}$. The density of poly(4, 4'-diphenyl ether pyromellitimide) was higher than poly(4, 4'-diphenyl ether pyromellitamic acid) indicating the greater crystallinity, perhaps because of the reduction of molar volume of polymers

  • Studies have been conducted to explore thermal imidization of polyamic acid. Aromatic polyimides are well recognized as high temperature linear polymers, and polyimide are used as structural materials, fibers, and adhesive. Two different kinds of polyimide were prepared by theimidization of polyamic acid which were synthesized from 2,2-bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl]- hexafluoropropane, 2,2-bis [4-(4-aminophenxy)phenyl] - hexamethylpropane and caprolactam and pyromelliti dianhydride under N-Methly-pyrrolidinone solvent. Polyamic acids were converted to polyimides containing imide bond by thermal imidization. The weight 50% loss temperatures of polyimide by TGA thermogram were recorded in the range of 700 ~ 720$^{\circ}$C in nitrogen gas. According, as a results, we conclued polyamic acid were cycliation after H2O molecule separationed, and this polyimide film could be used for Printed Circuit Boand.

Polyhydroxyamic Acid from 3,3′ - Dihydroxybenzidine and Pyromellitic Dianhydride as a Fire-safe Polymer

  • In order to assess the potential of the hydroxy-containing polyamic acid (PHAA) synthesized from 3,3'-dihydroxy benzidine and pyromellitic dianhydride for a fire-safe polymer, the cyclization pathway of PHAA has been investigated using a model compound prepared from 2-aminophenol and phthalic anhydride. The reaction was monitored. by $^1{H-nuclear}$ magnetic resonance. N-(2-hydroxyphenyl) phthalamic acid is converted to N-(2-hydroxyphenyl) phthalimide at ca. 175$^{\circ}C$, showing endothermic reaction. The imide structure is rearranged to the benzoxazole structure over ca. $400^{\circ}C$. These results are similar with that of PHAA. According to pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) data, water and carbon dioxide are released during the cyclization and rearrangement reaction. One DMAc molecule is complexed with one carboxyl acid group in PHAA, which accelerates the imidization process to release more easily the flame retardant, water.

  • In this study, we investigated the pretilt angle generation and liquid crystal (LC) alignment by ultravi-olet (UV) light irradiation during imidization of polymide. The generated pretilt angle of nematic (N) LC by using the in-situ photo-alignment method was smaller than that of the conventional UV photo-alignment method. Also, generated pretilt angle of NLC tends to increase by annealing. In case of using the polymer(AL-3046), we found that the in-situ Uv photo-alignment method has higher thermal stability of LC alignment, but it has a disadvantage to control pretilt angle.

  • The use of preformed polymers and their cross-linking have been a attempted in order to improve the intrinsic fraqility of monolayers and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB)films and to make their technological applications possible. It has shown that an imidization followed a polyion-complexation can stabilize the LB films against heat and solvents. And when the polymer structure was properly designed concurrent removal of the alkyl tails together with imide formation could be accomplished. In this paper we present a characteristic monolayer behavior of polymer with pendent polythers and carboxyls it’s polyion-complexed LB film with subphase polymer PAA and a possible skeletonization of the LB film by thermal imidization. Also deposition status of LB films are evaluated by using QCM
