An Appraisal of Drama 'KAIST' As an Informal Science Learning (비정규 과학학습으로 본 드라마 '카이스트' 평가)

  • KAIST' is the TV drama which has portrayed modem science & technology and the life of scientists & engineers for about one and half year. The purpose of this study is to appraise the drama 'KAIST' as an informal science learning. Using the interesting materials such as soccer robots, computer systems and satellites, the drama arouse students' interest and frequent watching. In general, the drama 'KAIST', as a source for informal science learning, played a positive role: it showed the image of scientists who have humane and sociable character being different from the students' image of real scientists, and changed positively the students' science-technology related attitudes, especially the attitudes towards scientists/engineers, science/technology, and the social nature of science/technology. Teachers commented that the drama 'KAIST' might arose students' interest in science, but the made-up contents and the genius-like characters could cause negative educational effects.

Investigating Student뷰s Private Perceptions of Scientists and their Work in Elementary and Middle School : Modified DAST and Interview. (변형된 DAST와 인터뷰를 이용한 과학자에 대한 이미지와 과학자가 하는 일에 관한 초.중등 학생의 인식 조사)

  • A number of studies have shown that students have a stereotyped image of a scientist, and this image is often a rather negative. Earlier work on images of the scientist revealed to be consistent across the various social classes and across countries. This study aimed to examine a Korean students' stereotyped images of scientist, compare it with earlier work, and also find out whether students have other ideas about scientist, apart from the stereotyped image. To these purposes, modified DAST and individual interviews were carried out with 217 students and 53 students, respectively. The results are as follows : 1. Most of the students portrayed the scientist as a neat and young man with well-featured face, which was different from earlier studies. 2. Year 3 boys described the scientist as a mu, but year 3 girls as a woman. 3. Most of the students gave positive answers which were at variance with the streotyped image. 4. An interview asking only one question was a complement to DAST. It was concluded that students have private perceptions of scientists and their work, as well as a stereotyped image.

A Study on the Creation of Scientific Visualization for the Public (일반인을 대상으로 하는 과학 시각화 제작 연구)

  • This paper presents an extended scientific visualization for the public over the scientific visualization targeting for scientists. Our scientific visualization pursues both transmission of scientific information and good-looking visuals. First of all, we examine a tendency to produce scientific images that make the public understand science, even though they are not professional scientists. As a result, we can find several cases that actively generate scientific visualizations for the public. Among them, several research institutes possess own production studio. As the production of scientific images is a convergence field combined of art and science, cooperation between artists and scientists is necessary. Therefore, in-depth communication between them is essential at the planning stage. Moreover, continuous feedbacks between two groups in the production stage, the next stage of the planning, make the scientific visualization to perfection. In this paper, we present 2 modeling methods that are easily encountered during producing scientific visualizations and shading and rendering methods for generating photorealistic images. The concept of an extended scientific visualization that we present shows a new vision of the scientific visualization field.

Adult Image Filtering using Support Vector Mchine (Support Vector Machine을 이용한 유해 이미지 분류)

  • 본 논문은 인터넷의 대표적인 문제점중의 하나인 Adult Image 분류 연구에 대해 기술한다. 특히 우리는 이러한 Adult Image를 분류하기 위한 Data Set을 5가지 타입으로 구성한다. 이러한 각 Image에 대해 Color, Gradient, Edge Direction 특성의 Feature들을 추출하고 이를 Histogram으로 구성한다. 이렇게 구성된 Histogram을 Support Vector Machine에 적용하여 Adult Image를 분류한다. 그 결과, 우리는 8250개의 Test Set에 대하여 Recall(96.53%), Precision(97.33%), False Positive(2.96%), F-Measure(96.93%)의 성능 결과를 보여준다.

Evaluation for the Improving Effect of Skin Surface by Image Analyzer (Image Analyser를 이용한 화장품 사용전후의 피부표면 개선에 대한 평가)

  • In this report, the variation of skin surface between before treatment and after treatment was investigated by skin image analyzer. The 30 volunteers were applied cream and lotion on the forearm Inside for 4 weeks, and the measurement parameter of skirl surface was adopted peak, length, height, and width. The results were as follows ; 1. variation trends of parameters was showed that number of peaks were increased, but length, height and width were decreased. 2. The order of improvement for skin surface are as follow ; height > length > peak > width. 3. And also disclosed that the number of peak has a correlation with width, and length has a correlation with height.

The Effect of Interview with Scientist and Engineer on the Science Career Orientation and Image of Scientists (과학기술자와의 인터뷰가 과학 진로 지향 및 과학자 이미지에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of interview with a scientist and engineer on service performance assessment on science career orientation and image of scientists. Science track students in the 11th grade carried out the interviews and made powerpoint presentations. After the students' presentation in the chemistry class, the teacher made comments on the contents of the interviews. Students gave presentation in each class for a year. Before starting this assessment, students took science career orientation questionnaire and DAST (draw-a-scientist-test). These two tests were conducted again at the end of the year. The results of this study showed that there was no significant difference between pre- and post-test score for the science career orientation. However, a significant difference was observed in the 'preference for science learning' category. These results showed that the career decision of a high school student has already been fixed rigidly. On the other hand, there was a significant difference (p < 0.01) between pre- and post-test on the image of scientists. This demonstrated that the stereotypic image for a scientist was reduced by the interview performance assessment and that, students came to have an affirmative perception of scientists on service.

  • 본 논문은 FastImage1300가 제공하는 병렬처리 구조를 사용하여 최적의 MPEG-4 부호화기를 구현하기 위한 프로세서 및 데이터 관리 방법을 제시한다. MPEG-4 부호화기가 가진 병렬성과 순차성을 FastImage1300 특성에 맞추어서 이 시스템이 제공할 수 있는 최대 속도로 동작하는 MPEG-4 부호화기를 구현한다. 이 부호화기를 사용하여 CIF 영상을 MPEG-4 CP@L3로 최대 25fps까지 부호화 할 수 있다.
