The inverse problem about the theoretical analysis of a drill string bending in a channel of an inclined bore-hole with localized geometrical imperfections is studied. The system of ordinary differential equations is first derived based on the theory of curvilinear flexible elastic rods. One can then use these equations to investigate the quasi-static effects of the drill string bending that may occur in the process of raising, lowering and rotation of the string inside the bore-hole. The method for numerical solution of the constructed equations is described. With the proposed method, the phenomenon of the drill column movement, its contact interaction with the bore-hole surface, and the frictional seizure can be simulated for different combinations of velocities, directions of rotation and axial motion of the string. Geometrical imperfections in the shape of localized smoothed breaks of the bore-hole axis line are considered. Some numerical examples are presented to illustrate the applicability of the method proposed.

A varying degree of eccentricity always exists in the initial configuration of a nuclear fuel rod. Its impact on traditional LWR fuel is limited as the radial gap closes relatively early during irradiation. However, the effect of misalignment is expected to be more relevant in rods with highly conductive fuels, large initial gaps and low conductivity filling gases. In this paper, we study similar characteristics in the experimental setup of two fuel disc irradiation campaigns carried out in the OECD Halden Boiling Water Reactor. Using the multi-dimensional fuel performance code OFFBEAT, we combine 2-D axisymmetric and 3-D simulations to investigate the effect of eccentricity on the fuel temperature distribution. At the same time, we illustrate how the advent of modern tools with multi-dimensional capabilities might further improve the design and interpretation of in-pile separate-effect tests and we outline the potential of such an analysis for upcoming experiments.
In the framework of OECD/NEA Working Group on Fuel Safety, a RIA fuel-rod-code Benchmark Phase I was organized in 2010-2013. It consisted of four experiments on highly irradiated fuel rodlets tested under different experimental conditions. This benchmark revealed the need to better understand the basic models incorporated in each code for realistic simulation of the complicated integral RIA tests with high burnup fuel rods. A second phase of the benchmark (Phase II) was thus launched early in 2014, which has been organized in two complementary activities: (1) comparison of the results of different simulations on simplified cases in order to provide additional bases for understanding the differences in modelling of the concerned phenomena; (2) assessment of the uncertainty of the results. The present paper provides a summary and conclusions of the second activity of the Benchmark Phase II, which is based on the input uncertainty propagation methodology. The main conclusion is that uncertainties cannot fully explain the difference between the code predictions. Finally, based on the RIA benchmark Phase-I and Phase-II conclusions, some recommendations are made.

We fabricated BSCCO-2212 (2212) rod by the melt casting process (MCP) and evaluated the effect of the melt flowing on the critical current ($I_c$) by using vertical and tilt casting. It was observed that the $2212-SrSO_4$ rod processed by the tilt casting method with homogeneous pre-heating temperature of the mold had a higher $I_c$ than that processed by the vertical casting method. We also evaluated the influence of the strontium sulfates ($SrSO_4$) addition on the texture, microstructure, critical current and temperature, and mechanical hardness of the $2212-SrSO_4$ rods. It was observed that the addition of $SrSO_4$ improved the critical current ($I_c$) and mechanical hardness of the 2212. The $I_c$ of the 2212 increased as the $SrSO_4$ content increased and reached a peak value (260 A at 77 K) at an $SrSO_4$ content of 6 wt.%. In addition, the addition of $SrSO_4$ had a beneficial effect on the mechanical hardness of the 2212. We studied the possible cause of the variation in the $I_c$ with the melt flowing and the $SrSO_4$ content based on the XRD, EPMA analysis and the microstructural observation.
NaI(Tl) scintillation materials are considered to be one of many materials that are used exclusively for γ-ray detection and spectroscopy. The gamma-ray spectrometer is not an easy-to-use device, and the accuracy of the numerical values must be carefully checked based on the rules of the calibration technique. Therefore, accurate information about the detection system and its effectiveness is of greater importance. The purpose of this study is to estimate, using an analytical-numerical formula (ANF), the purely geometric solid angle, geometric efficiency, and total efficiency of a cylindrical NaI(Tl) γ-ray detector with a side-through hole. This type of detector is ideal for scanning fuel rods and pipelines, as well as for performing radio-immunoassays. The study included the calculation of the complex solid angle, in combination with the use of various points like gamma sources, located axially and non-axially inside the through detector side hole, which can be applied in a hypothetical method for calibrating the facility. An extended γ-ray energy range, the detector, source dimensions, "source-to-detector" geometry inside the side-through hole, path lengths of γ-quanta photons crossing the facility, besides the photon average path length inside the detector medium itself, were studied and considered. This study is very important for an expanded future article where the radioactive point source can be replaced by a volume source located inside the side-trough hole of the detector, or by a radioactive pipeline passing through the well. The results provide a good and useful approach to a new generation of detectors that can be used for low-level radiation that needs to be measured efficiently.
The purpose of this study is to obtain the data of prestep in cavity preparation by observing changed conditions of laser irradiated dental hard tissues. The forty five extracted caries free human molars were divided into three groups and each group into five subgroups. A $CO_2$ laser irradiation was performed each subgroup of group I for one second with output power of 5 W, 10 Wand 20 W. On group II, laser irradiation was done ten times for 0.1 second duration using same power ratings as group I. On group III, laser irradiation was done 0.1 second, 0.2 second and 0.4 second with output power of 50 W. We investigated mineral contents and crater wall of obtained specimens, i.e., laser irradiated teeth, using computer controlled electron probe microanalyzer and scanning electron microscope. The following results were obtained: 1. Both calcium and phosphorus contents in laser irradiated enamel crater wall were increased, and magnesium content was decreased, but these trends were not statistically significant. 2. In laser irradiated dentin, change of mineral content was more significant. 3. In laser irradiated enamel and dentin, there were no significant differences on mineral content change due to irradiation condition and energy density. 4. In scanning electron microscopic study, enamel rods of the crater wall were fused and clefts were observed in parallel with the direction of enamel rod for all groups. 5. In laser irradiated dentin, irregular fusion and clefts were observed. In irradiated teeth with high power and short duration, the locally formed narrow crater wall was observed.
Experiments were performed to determine the thermal (or turbulent) diffusion coefficient (TDC) and to investigate the critical heat flux (CHF) performance in the 5${\times}$5 rod bundle with 5 unheated rods which are supported by Hybrid Mixing Vane. In this study, HFC-134a fluid was used as working fluid and the fluid temperature were measured in the important subchannels. To determine the TDC value, the measured fluid temperatures were compared with the predicted values obtained from the MATRA code. The best optimized value of ${\beta}$ was found to be 0.02 by considering prediction statistics, i.e., average and standard deviations of the differences between the experimental results and code calculations. Using the best optimized value of ${\beta}$ as 0.02, the MATRA code predicts the test results of the fluid temperature within ${\pm}$1.0 % of error. According to the experimental results on CHF of 5 non-heating guide tubes, the case with non-heating guide tube showed a little good performance in terms of CHF.
This paper describes the characteristics of the fluctuating lift forces when a circular cylinder vibrates in the cross-flow direction. The response characteristics on elastically supported the circular cylinder was first examined by a free-vibration test. Next, flow-induced vibrations obtained by the free-vibration test were reproduced by a forced-vibration test, and then the characteristics of the fluctuating lift forces, the work done by the fluctuating lift, the behavior of the rolling-up of the separated shear layers were investigated on the basis of the visualized flow patterns. The main findings were that (i) the fluctuating lift forces become considerably large than those of a stationary circular cylinder, (ii) negative pressure generates on the surface of the circular cylinder when the rolling-up of separated shear layer begins, (iii) the phase between the fluctuating lift force and the cylinder displacement changes abruptly as the reduced velocity $U_r$ increases, and (iv) whether the generating cross-flow vibration becomes divergent or convergent can be described based on the work done by the fluctuating lift force. Furthermore, it was found that the generation of cross-flow vibration can be perfectly suppressed when the small tripping rods are installed on the surface of the circular cylinder.
Three Korean rapidly progressive periodontitis patient (R.P.P.) were examined for the isolation and identification of black-pigmented Bacteroides and Bacteroides gingivalis in the subgingival plaque. Black-pigmented Bacteroides and Bacteroides gingivalis were recovered from all three R.P. patients and the predominant isolates were Bacteroides intermedius followed by Bacteroides gingivalis. The B. gingivalis isolated from subgingival plaque of rapidly progressive periodontitis patients were Gram-negative pleomorphic rods and each produced brown to black colonies on blood agar plate supplemented with 5% rabbit 5ug/ml haemin, 0.5ug/ml of menadione and 40ug/ml of Kanamycin. The B. gingivalis isolated were fermented none of Glucose, Sucrose, Lactose, Esculin and Cellobinose and produced indole. Isolation and identification of Bacteroides gingivalis in Korean R.P. patients can be contributed to the research on the pathogenesis of Korean periodontal disease.

The behavior of composite steel-concrete beams depends on the transmission of forces between two parts: the concrete slab and the steel I-beam. The shear connector is responsible for the interaction between these two parts. Recently, an alternative shear connector, called Truss Type connector, has been developed; it aligns efficient structural behavior, fast construction and implementation, and low cost when compared to conventional connectors applied in composite structures. However, there is still a lack of full understanding of the mechanical behavior of the Truss Type connector, due to its novelty. Thus, this study aims to analyze the influence of variation of geometric and physical parameters on the shear resistance of the Truss Type connector. In order to investigate those parameters, a non-linear finite element model, able to simulate push-out tests of Truss Type connectors, was specifically developed and validated with experimental results. A thorough parametric study, varying the height, the angle between rods, the diameter, and the concrete strength, was conducted to evaluate the shear resistance of the Truss Type connector. In addition, an equation to predict the resistance of the original Truss Type shear connector was proposed.
