The effect of acid treatment of cellulose on the substitution charateristics of carboxymethylation was studied in this paper. Five samples of hydrocellulose(HC), all prepared from ${\alpha}$-cellulose by hydrolysis with five reaction times and determined on average molecular weight and polydispersity, were carboxymethylated to carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). The CMCs from HCs were examined upon degree of substitution(DS), distribution of carboxymethyl groups in anhydroglucose units of the cellulose, and unsubstituted anhydroglucose(USAG) content. The DS of CMCs increased with increasing the hydrolysis time except CMC from HC at 1 hour hydrolysis time. In carboxymethylation the availability of hydroxyl groups on anhydroglucose units in HCs was the highest on OH(2), and the relative availability of OH(6) increased with the increasing of the hydrolysis time. The USAG contents were more deviated than that calculated based on Spurlin's model, and had a strong tendency of decreasing with increasing the hydrolysis time. The reactivity of HC was lower than that of ${\alpha}$-cellulose and the relative availability of OH(6) in HC increased with the hydrolysis time.
This study was to investigate the enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose using the cellulase from whole body of the native termite collected in Milyang-si, Kyungsangnamdo, Korea. In the results, optimal temperature and pH for the enzyme of native termites were $45^{\circ}C$ and pH 5.5 for both endo-${\beta}$-1, 4-glucanase and ${\beta}$-glucosidase. Enzyme activity of the termite enzyme was shown $8.8{\times}10^{-2}\;FPU/m{\ell}$. And the highest glucose hydrolysis rate of cellulose by the digestive enzyme from test termites was 24.5% based on the glucan, comparing 59.7% by commercial enzyme (only celluclast 1.5 L) at 1% (w/v) substrate and 36 hours in hydrolysis time. This hydrolysis rate by the digestive enzyme from test termites was comparatively high value in 41% level of the commercial enzyme. When cellulose was hydrolyzed by the digestive enzyme of the native termite, glucose hydrolysis was almost completed in 12 hours which was the considerably reduced time for cellulose hydrolysis. It was suggested that the quiet short reaction time for cellulose hydrolysis by the enzyme from native termite could be a very high advantage for development of hydrolysis cellulase for lignocellulosic biomass.
Amount of food waste has been increased annually in Korea and re-use of food waste as a fertilizer or soil amendment in agricultural field has been studied. Therefore, main purpose of this research was to determine optimum condition of hydrolysis for food waste management. Three different solvents, HCl, $H_2SO_4$, and KOH, were used and varied concentration at the range of 10~30% and hydrolysis time at the range of 1~3 hours were evaluated. In general, reduction rate of food waste was increased when concentration of solvent and hydrolysis time was increased except when KOH was used. Among different solvents, concentration, and hydrolysis time, the highest reduction rate (97.79%) was observed when 30% of HCl was used with temperature of $140^{\circ}C$ at 2 hours of hydrolysis time. In addition, neutralization effect of alkalic materials, shell waste (SW) and egg shell (ES) was evaluated. Both SW and ES increased pH of finished acid hydrolysis solution up to 7.61 indicating that neutralization effect of SW and ES was sufficient for finished acid hydrolysis solution. Contents of organic matter was also at the range of 10.7~13.04% and 5.53~8.04% respectively when HCl and $H_2SO_4$ were used as solvent. Overall, hydrolysis technique can be used to manage food waste with selected optimum condition in this study and characteristics of finished hydrolysis solution after neutralization might be suitable for soil amendments.
Acrylonitrile (AN)-acrylamide (AM) copolymers were prepared by nitric acidic hydrolysis of homopolyacrylonitrile. The acrylamino group increased as a function of hydrolysis time, while crystallinity decreased. Differential scanning calorimetry and a thermal gravimetric analysis indicated that the acylamino introduced by acidic hydrolysis effectively enhanced the cyclization reaction at low temperature due to the change of the cyclization reaction mechanism. Char-yield of AN-AM copolymers also gradually increased with increasing hydrolysis time. The maximum char-yield was 49.48% when hydrolized at $23^{\circ}C$ in 65% nitric acid solution for 18 h, which was 30% higher than that of non-acidic hydrolysis of homopolyacrylonitrile. Simulation of the practical process also showed an increase of char yields, where the char yields were 55.43% and 62.60% for homopolyacrylonitrile and copolyacrylonitrile, respectively, with a hydrolysis time of 13 h.
The effects of initial solid concentration and microwave irradiation (MWI) time on the hydrolysis of waste activated sludge (WAS) were investigated. MWI time strongly influenced WAS hydrolysis for all initial solid concentrations of 8.20, 31.51, and 52.88 g VSS/L. For all WAS, the volatile suspended solids (VSS) solubilization degree ranged from 35.6% to 38.4% during a total MWI time of 10 min. Soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) concentration increased at a rate proportional to the decrease of VSS during the MWI. However, the clearly different VSS solubilization patterns that were observed during the MWI were explained by the 2-step hydrolysis of WAS, consisting of the initial disintegration of the easily degradable part of the sludge, followed by the subsequent disintegration of the hardly degradable part of the sludge. WAS hydrolysis rates for 3 to 6 min of MWI were significantly lower than those for less than 3 min, or more than 6 min. From these results, 3 min MWI time and WAS of 31.51 g VSS/L (centrifugal thickener WAS) showed the most efficient hydrolysis of WAS at 36.0%. The profiles of total nitrogen (T-N) concentrations corresponded well to the SCOD increases in terms of the empirical formula of bacterial cell mass ($C_5H_7O_2N$). The negligible T-N increase and pH decrease during WAS hydrolysis by MWI will allow the application of this process to subsequent biological processes, such as anaerobic digestion.
Waste paper stands for the major biodegradable organic fraction of most of municipal solid waste. The potential of waste paper for glucose production was investigated in this current work. The pretreatment was accomplished by first subjecting waste paper to disintegration time (30 s), followed by ink removal of disintegrated waste paper using an deinking agent. Concentrated acid hydrolysis of waste paper with sulfuric acid was optimized to maximize glucose conversion. The concentrated acid hydrolysis conditions for waste paper (disintegrated time: 30 s, deinking agent loading : 15 ml) were optimized by using central composite design and response surface methodology. The optimization process employed a central composite design, where the investigated variables were acid concentration (60~80%), loading sulfuric acid (1~5 ml) and reaction time (1~5 h). All the tested variables were identified to have significant effects (p < 0.05) on glucose conversion. The optimum concentrated acid hydrolysis conditions were acid concentration of 70.8%, loading sulfuric acid of 3.2 ml and a reaction time of 3.6 h. This research of concentrated acid hydrolysis was a promising method to improve glucose conversion for waste paper.

This study investigated quality changes and functions of low-molecular soymilk according to hydrolysis time (30, 60, and 90 minutes). According to the results, pH of hydrolyzed groups were lower than that of the control group but it did not show a large difference according to hydrolysis time while sugar content was reduced with longer hydrolysis time. Although degree of hydrolysis and calcium tolerance increased with longer hydrolysis time, there was not a significant difference according to the time. Among free sugars, contents of glucose and fructose grew while those of sucrose and maltose tended to decline with time. Total free sugar content was the largest with 60 minutes of hydrolysis time recording 827.65 mg%. Total amino acid content was also the highest with hydrolyzed for 60 minutes recording 85.80 mg% and those of all hydrolyzed groups were higher than that of the control group. In addition, the content of essential amino acid increased significantly with time. In SDS-PAGE, checked for the tendency of becoming low molecules, molecular weights were found to be 33 kDa or less kDa in all hydrolyzed groups. When functional characteristics of soymilk such as electron donating, superoxide radical scavenging and ACE inhibitory activities were compared, longer hydrolysis time led to higher activities. From these results, overall quality of low molecular soymilk was superior when hydrolyzed for 60 minutes and the findings should be viable in the development of various types of functionally strengthened low-molecular soymilk in the future.
The effect on the hydrolysis resistance properties by the addition of maleic anhydride grafted EMDM (MA-g-EPDM) and PP (MA-g-PP) to a PA66/GF composite was investigated with respect to the mechanical properties, thermal properties, and morphology. The degree of hydrolysis of the PA66/GF composite was measured using py-GC/MS analysis. When compared to the PA66/GFcomposite in MEG/water solution, the composites where MA-g-EPDM and MA-g-PP were added to PA66/GF showed a higher degree of hydrolysis resistance, impact strength, and thermal properties, whereas their tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural strength and flexural modulus decreased. As immersion time in the solution increases, the rate of tensile strength drop of the MA-g-PP added composite appeared lower than that of the PA66/MA-g-EPDM/GF and PA66/GF composites. The py-GC/MS analysis confirmed the formation of PA66 hydrolysis reaction by products such as carboxylic acid and alkylamine with increasing immersion time.

Kinetics of holocellulose hydrolysis in concentrated sulfuric acid was analyzed using $^1H$-NMR spectroscopy with different reaction time, temperature and acid concentration in secondary hydrolysis. In this work, reaction condition of secondary hydrolysis was similar to concentrated sulfuric acid process with electrodialysis or simulated moving bed chromatography process for sulfuric acid recycling. By $^1H$-NMR spectroscopy, acid hydrolyzates from higher secondary acid hydrolysis (25-35% acid concentration) was successfully analyzed without any difficulties in neutralization or adsorption of acid hydrolyzate to solid salt. Higher acid concentration, higher temperature and longer reaction time led to more cellulose for glucose conversion but accompanied with glucose to galactose isomerization, glucose to unknown compounds and degradation of glucose to organic acid via furans.
This study was carried out to investigate an optimum condition for the high angiotensin-l converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity and the yield on enzyme concentration, casein concentration, and hydrolysis time. The optimum condition was performed by response surface methodology for acquirement of casein hydrolysate of milk which shows high ACE inhibitory activity, Among 8 tested enzymes, Protamex showed the highest activation degree with 77.03 unit/g from casein. Their hydrolysis degrees of flovourzyme 500MG, protamex, mixture from 1% casein were 85.5, 88.5, and 93.5%, respectively. The ranges of enzyme concentration (0.25-1.25%), casein concentration (2.5-12.5%), and hydrolysis time (20-100 min) as 3 independent variables through preliminary experiments of the yield of casein hydrolysate and ACE inhibitory activity, and it shows optimum response surface at a saddle point. It shows enzyme concentration (0.64%), casein concentration (8.38%), and hydrolysis time (55.81 min) in the yield aspect and showed the highest activity at enzyme concentration (0.86%), casein concentration (5.97%), and hydrolysis time (63.86 min) in ACE inhibitory aspect. The $R^2$ value of a fitted optimum formula on the hydrolysis yield was 0.9751 as the significant level of 1%. The $R^2$ value of a fitted optimum formula on ACE inhibitory activity is 0.8398, and the significance is recognized in the range of 5%.
