Alanate-based materials, which were known to have high hydrogen storage capacity, were synthesized by mechanochemically metathesis reaction of metal chloride and sodium alanate without solvent. XRD patterns of synthesized materials showed that metathesis reaction of cations between metal chloride and sodium alanate was progressed favorably without any solvent. Magnesium alanate showed that 3.2 wt.% of hydrogen was evolved by the thermal decomposition. The addition of a small amount of Ti to the magnesium alanate greatly reduced hydrogen evolution temperature. Also, Ti doped magnesium alanate had a good regeneration property. Both the calcium and lithium-magnesium alanate showed the lower starting temperature of the two step hydrogen evolution and fast kinetics for the hydrogen evolution.
The optimum temperature and pH for growth and hydrogen evolution of the organism were observed at 30-35$^{\circ}C$, and around pH 7.0, respectively. The efficiency of various sugars and organic acids on hydrogen evolution as electron donors by the organism was examined. Among them, higher rates of hydrogen evolution were observed with sugars such as glucose or fructose and organic acids such as alate or pyruvate. From the result, it was evident that Rhodobacter sphaeroides KS56 had a great capacity of utilizing various kinds of reduced carbon compounds as electron donors.
Hydrogen evolution on a steel surface and subsequent hydrogen diffusion into the steel matrix are evaluated using an electrochemical permeation test with no applied cathodic current on the hydrogen charging side. In particular, cyclic operation in the permeation test is also conducted to clarify the corrosion-induced hydrogen evolution behavior. In contrast to the conventional perception that the cathodic reduction reaction on the steel in neutral aqueous environments is an oxygen reduction reaction, this study demonstrates that atomic hydrogen may be generated on the steel surface by the corrosion reaction, even in a neutral environment. Although a much lower permeation current density and significant slower diffusion kinetics of hydrogen are observed compared to the results measured in acidic environments, they contribute to the increase in the embrittlement index. This study suggests that the research on hydrogen embrittlement in ultra-strong steels should be approached from the viewpoint of corrosion reactions on the steel surface and subsequent hydrogen evolution/diffusion behavior.
Physiological conditions for hydrogen evolution by Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides K-7 are examined. Larger amount of molecular hydrogen was evolved at $30^{\circ}C$, pH6.8-7.0 under anaerobically illuminated condition of about 12, 000 lux by the organism. The heighest rates of hydrogen evolution were observed in the culture with the organic acids such as acetate, DL-lactate or DL-malate in media containing L-glutamate as a nitrogen source. Hydrogen was also evolved from glucose with the rate of $178.9\;{\mu}l/hr/mg$ cells (dry weight). When glucose was adopted a a sole carbon source, however, conside erable time lag of about 20hours was required for hydrogen evolution. The resting cells stored at $30^{\circ}C$ under argon maintained the rate of hydrogen evolution in nearly about 90% of initial one even 40 days of storation.
In the present study, effects of a thin Zn-flash coating on hydrogen evolution, infusion, and embrittlement of advanced high strength steel during electro-galvanizing were examined. The electrochemical permeation technique in conjunction with impedance spectroscopy was employed under applied cathodic polarization. Moreover, a slow-strain rate test was conducted to evaluate loss of elongation (i.e., indicative of hydrogen embrittlement (HE)) and examine fracture surfaces. Results showed that the presence of a thin Zn-flash coating, even when it was not distributed uniformly, reduced hydrogen evolution rate and substantially impeded infusion of hydrogen into the steel substrate. This was primarily due to a hydrogen overvoltage on Zn coating and trapping of hydrogen at the interface of Zn coating/flash coating/steel substrate. Consequently, the sample with flash coating had a smaller HE index than the sample without flash coating. These results suggest that a thin Zn-flash coating could be an effective technical strategy for mitigating HE in advanced high-strength steels.
Hydrogen evolution by mixed fermentation of Clostn"dium butyn"cum and photosynthetic bacteria which were capable of consuming clostridial metabolites and evolving hydrogen was investigated. Acetate and butyrate formed from anaerobic clostridial fermentation were efficiently utilized by Rhodopseudomonas sPhaeroides K-7. For complete bioconversion of clostridial metabolites such as acetate and butyrate into hydrogen, mixed culture of both anaerobic organisms forming molecular hydrogen was performed. By the mixed culture, the yield of hydrogen production increased by 20 to 75% and the levels of clostridial metabolites such as acetate, butyrate decreased in the fermentation broth. Influence of cell mixing ratio. mixing time and inoculum level on hydrogen evolution by mixed culture were examined. And then cometabolic pattern compared with in pure culture was observed as time course.
Hydrogen is attracting much attention as a renewable energy source with high energy density and environmental friendliness. Among various hydrogen production methods, water electrolysis stands out as a clean hydrogen production technique that could lead the future of hydrogen production, as it does not emit carbon, and many studies are currently underway to realize this technology. However, the high overpotential, which increases the cost of hydrogen production, acts as a stumbling block, making the development of electrocatalysts extremely important. This paper aims to summarize and introduce recent research trends in the development of electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction through interfacial engineering, and to deeply discuss the challenges in implementing next-generation water electrolysis devices.
Hydrogen evolution from biomass-derived carbohydrates by some Clostridia and optimal culture conditions for hydrogen evolution were investigated. Among the organisms tested, Clostridium butyricum was efficient hydrogen producer with starch, xylan, pectin, cellobiose and xylose. In batch fermentation of Cl. butyricum, optimal conditions for hydrogen evolution were achieved at pH 7.0-8.5, 10-50 mM phosphate, and 2% (w/v) glucose. Total amount of molecular hydrogen evolved by the organism slightly increased at the presence of acetate (<150 mM) or butyrate (<20 mM) in the initial fermentation medium. Especially, in case of more than the above concentration of butyrate, growth and hydrogen evolution were dramatically inhibited. In the conditions were described here, 70 mmole of molecular hydrogen per mg of DCW was produced with 1%(w/v) glucose by the organism.
The cathodic hydrogen evolution ability of different pure metals and their long term galvanic corrosion behavior with pure Mg were investigated. The hydrogen evolution ability of pure Ti, Al, Sn and Zr is weak, while that of Fe, W, Cr, and Co is very strong. Initial polarization test could not completely reveal the cathodic behavior of the tested metals during long term corrosion. The cathodic hydrogen evolution ability may vary significantly in the long term galvanic tests for different metals, especially for Al whose cathodic current density reduced to 1/50 of the initial value. The anodic polarization shows that Al and Sn as alloying elements are supposed to provide relatively good passive effect for Mg alloy, while Ag can provide a slight passive effect and Zn has little passive effect.

With the emerging importance of catalysts for water electrolysis, developing efficient and inexpensive electrocatalysts for water electrolysis plays a vital role in renewable hydrogen energy technology. In this study, a 1nm thickness of TiC-supported Ru catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has been successfully fabricated using an electron (E)-beam evaporator and thermal decomposition of gaseous CH4 in a furnace. The prepared Ru/TiC catalyst exhibited an outstanding performance for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction with an overpotential of 55 mV at 10 mA cm-2. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the outstanding HER performance of Ru/TiC was attributed to the high surface area of the support and the metal-support interaction.
