  • Immersed boundary lattice Boltzmann method (IBLBM) has been applied to simulate a turbulent flow over circular cylinder in a flow field effectively. Although IBLBM is very effective method to simulate the flow over a complex shape of obstacle in the flow field regardless of the constructed grids in the calculation domain, the results, however, become numerically unstable in high reynolds number flow. The most effective suggestion to archive the numerical stability in high Reynolds number flow is applying the multiple relaxation time (MRT) model instead of single relaxation time(SRT) model in the collision term of lattice Boltzmann equation. In the research MRT model for IBLBM was introduced and comparing the numerical results obtained by applying SRT and MRT. The hydraulic characteristic of cylinder in a flow field between two parallel plate at the range of $Re{\leqq}2000$represented and it is also compared the drag and lifting coefficients of the cylinder calculated by IBLBM with SRT and MRT model.

  • To clarify the hydraulic and thermal characteristics of ice slurry which made from 6.5% ethylene glycol-water solution flow in the double tube and plate type heat exchanger, experimental studies were performed. The mass flux and ice fraction of ice slurry were varied from 800 to 3500 kg/$m^2s$(or 7 to 17 kg/min) and from 0 to 25%, respectively. Through the experiment, it was found that the measured pressure drop and heat transfer rate increase with the mass flux and ice fraction; however the effect of ice fraction appears not to be significant at high mass flux region. At the region of low mass flux, a sharp increase in the pressure drop and heat transfer rate were observed depends on mass flux.

  • In this study, the characteristic of a vane pump of automotive power steering system is numerically analyzed. The vane pump changes the energy level of operation fluid by converting mechanical input power to hydraulic output. To simulate this mechanism, moving mesh technique is adopted. As a result, the flow rate and pressure are obtained by numerical analysis. The flow rate agrees well with the experimental data. Moreover, the variation and oscillation of the pressure around the rotating vane are observed. As a result of flow characteristics, The difference of pressure between both side of vane tip causes the back flow into the rotor. As the rotational velocity increases, the flow rate at the outlet and the pressure in the vane tip rises with higher amplitude of oscillation. In order to reducing the oscillation, the design of devices for decreasing the cross-area of the outlet part and returning the flow from the outlet to the inlet is required.

  • In this study, we present a gripping mechanism that is inspired by caterpillar's proleg. A caterpillar's proleg has planta that gives compliance to the proleg by greatly deforming its shape. In the bio-inspired gripper, the planta is implemented by flexure joints. The flexures buckle when end force and end moment is applied on the joint in opposite direction. Using this characteristic, the gripping structure is designed so that the flexure buckling can occur. Flexure buckling increases the region where gripping force is constant and this region leads to increasing in gripping range. At the same time, flexure buckling decouples all spines and therefore all spines can move differentially and independently. With this simple but effective mechanism, the bioinspire gripper can achieve adaptive gripping on rough and rugged surfaces. A prototype is built to demonstrate adaptive gripping on rough and rugged surfaces such as cement block, brick.

  • This paper describes development procedure and verification test results of a bi-propellant thruster using hydrogen peroxide and kerosene. The design thrust of the thruster is about 500 N and six swirl type coaxial injectors were used. The passage type manifolds were employed for the injector head to reduce the response time. The passage was designed to minimize stagnation points and recirculation region to ensure uniform flow distribution and sufficient cooling performance through flow analysis using Fluent. A catalytic igniter using hydrogen peroxide was installed at the center of the injector head. The propellant feeding and spray characteristics were confirmed by hydraulic tests. Combustion tests were performed on design and off-design points to analyze combustion characteristics under various mixture ratio conditions. The combustion test results show that combustion efficiency was over 95 % and chamber pressure fluctuation were less than 1.5 % under all test conditions.

  • This paper presents development of flow control valve using MR fluid. Generally, since the apparent viscosity of MR fluids is adjusted by applying magnetic fields, the MR valves can control high level fluid power without any mechanical moving parts. In this paper, flow control valve using MR fluid on the behavior of the magnetic field influence on the numerical analysis of more accurate electromagnetic parameters were obtained, even if when magnetic field apply inside of surrounding MR fluid from electromagnet, more realistic designing way analysis of characteristic of whole magnetic field distribution is suggested by surrounding magnetic material. Also, comparison of flow rate inlet and outlet, behavior of MR fluid in experiments proposed. A new type of flow control valve using MR fluid is proposed by analysis of behavior of MR fluid in experiments.

  • The Study of steady performance of orifice must be precede before study of dynamic characteristics with configuration change. So, orifice performance with change of diameter ratio, thickness, expansion and angle predicted by CFD. The analysis algorithm is SIMPLEC. And PRESTO, QUICK scheme is used for dicretization. The $k-{\omega}$ STS turbulent model also used. The discharge coefficient is rapidly increased with increasing of diameter ratio and slowly decreased after rapidly increasing with orifice thicken. In case of expansion angle, the discharge coefficient is the smallest at $45^{\circ}$ of the angle.

  • The hydraulic performance analysis of an entire pump system composed of an inducer, impeller, volute and seal for the application on turbopumps is performed using three-dimensional Wavier-Stokes equations. A quasi-steady mixing-plane method is used on the impeller/volute interface to simulate the unsteady interaction phenomena. From this wort the effects of each component on the pump performance are investigated at design and off-design conditions through the analysis of flow structures and loss mechanisms. The computational results are in a good agreement with experimental ones in terms of the headrise and efficiency even though very complex flow structures are present. It is found that the asymmetric pressure distribution along the volute wall constitutes the main reason of the difference between experimental and computational results due to the limitation of the applying the quasi-steady method. Since the volute was found to be over-designed according to the pressure distribution of the volute wall, redesign of the volute has been performed resulting in an improved performance characteristic.

  • Aiming at time-dependent performance prediction of Liquid Rocket Engine(LRE) system, Modular Program for Conceptual Design of LRE is reviewed, and a modeling and dynamic analysis of rocket engine system with reference to Rocket Engine Dynamic Simulator(REDS) is outlined. Component modeling is based on classical thermodynamic and inviscid theories, and were formulated mathematically in terms of essential parameters. Essential design parameters are addressed. The rocket engine is modeled as a system of pipes with various hydraulic elements, and then the operate characteristic of that elements are simulated by solving conservation equation sequentially.

  • The aim of this paper is to examine the hydraulically optimized camber of a blade. Prior studies have tried to determine the sound method of design on small-hydro turbines. These have appeared to realize a reasonably efficient small-hydro turbine. Nonetheless, specific and accurate design data have not as yet been established for the shape of the runner blade. Hence, this study examines the performance characteristic of an axial propeller turbine with 0~8% camber variations. The results of output power, efficiency, and pressure distribution of the turbine are graphically depicted. The definition of camber refers to the NACA airfoil. The commercial finite element analysis (FEA) packages, ANSYS, and CFX are used in this study. The results revealed the performance characteristics on small-hydro turbine and suggested a highly efficient section shape of the runner.
