  • Blast Furnace Slag is good for enhancing the qualities of concrete such as reducing hydration heat increasing fluidity, long-term strength and durability, but it has some problems: construction time is increased or the rotation rate of form is decreased due to low development of early strength. In this study, an aqueous alkali solution for alkali activated reaction was obtained by the electrolysis using concentrated water discharged from seawater desalination process. Prepared aqueous alkali solution was applied to produce mortars using blast furnace slag. The results can be summarized as follows : For the mortar, compressive strength was decreased below 2% of NaOH and increased below 6% of NaOH. And compressive strength was increased gradually with increasing NaOCl contents. However, NaCl contents of mortars caused a decrease of 28days strength above early strength.

  • Recently, construction technology of RC structures must be examined for creep in concrete. The factors affecting the creep prediction of concrete and the results of creep in domestic construction field were reviewed. The longer the creep test period and the higher the compressive strength, the higher the creep prediction accuracy. The higher the curing temperature, the higher the initial strength development of the concrete, but the difference in the creep coefficients increased over time. Based on the results of creep evaluation in the domestic construction field and lab. tests, a modified predictive model that complements the ACI-209 model was proposed. In the creep prediction of real members using general to high strength concrete, the test period and temperature should be considered precisely.

  • In attempt to improve the chemotherapeutic activity of adriamycin, adriamycin-entrapped HSA microspheres were prepared and investigated by the various in vitro experiments. The shape, surface characteristics and size distribution of HSA microspheres are observed by scanning electron microscopy. The in vitro drug release, albumin matrix degradation by protease of HSA microspheres were studied. The shape of HSA microspheres were spherical and the surface was smooth and compact. The size of HSA microspheres ranged from 0.4 to $2.5\;{\mu}m$ and have average diameters of 0.5 to $0.7\;{\mu}m$. The size distribution of HSA microspheres prepared by ultrasonication was mainly affected by albumin concentration and heating time in the process of hardening. In in vitro, almost all adriamycin was released from HSA microspheres for 8 hr. Analysis of the resulting adriamycin release profiles demonstrated that adriamycin is released from the microspheres in two distinct steps, a fast phase (until 30 min) followed by a much slower sustained release phase. Drug release, which is due to diffusion, was depended on the rate of matrix hydration. Drug release was largely affected by albumin concentration and heating temperature during the process of hardening. Albumin matrix degradation of HSA microspheres was affected by heating temperature and albumin concentration. Higher temperature and longer times generally produce harder, less porous, and slowly degradable microspheres.

  • The present study investigated the physical changes and reaction products with setting time after mixing of various mineral admixtures such as lime, hydrated lime, gypsum, kaolin, zeolite and diatomaceous earth with four types of cement (portland cement, slag cement, quick lime, hydrated lime) and clay rich sediments in soft foundation. As results, slag cement showed the greater compressive strength than normal portland cement. The mixing experiments with various mineral admixtures and slag cement resulted that gypsum showed the greatest compressive strength. Additionally, we conducted mixing experiments with various mixing ratios of gypsum and slag cement. The experiments showed that the mixing ratio of $30\%$ gypum and $70\%$ slag cement has the greatest compressive strength. Ettringite was produced as a reaction Product. This fact indicates that gypsum effectively promotes hydration reaction and contributed to the greater compressive strength. These experimental results can be used as fundamental data for the stabilization of soft clay foundation.

  • MgO recently has been regarded as the alternative material for replacement of cement. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of accelerated carbonation on the strength development of MgO-based binder which is binary mixtures of magnesium oxide (MgO) with portland cement (PC) or ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) or fly ash (FA). The compressive strengths of all binders were higher in the 20% $CO_2$ condition and for longer curing time. The strength were generally higher as the following order: MgO/PC > MgO/GGBS > MgO/FA system. The binder composed of 20% MgO and 80% PC showed highest compressive strength (38.0MPa) which was higher than PC. The correlation analysis of the porosity and compressive strength showed that compressive strength was higher when porosity was lower. The hydration and carbonation products of MgO including brucite ($Ca(OH)_2$), magnesite ($MgCO_3$) and nesquehonite ($MgCO_3{\cdot}3H_2O$) presumably filled the pores and contributed to strength development. Thermogravimetric analyses elucidated that 0.34 kg of $CO_2$ could be stored the 50% MgO/50% PC binder which performed the maximum $CO_2$ uptake at 20% $CO_2$ condition.

  • Liposomes are spherical vesicles composed of lipid bilayer membranes. However, the conventional liposomes have been found to be plagued by rapid opsonization and taken up by the reticuloendothelial system (RES), resulting in shortened circulation time and limited intracellular uptake to target cell. In this study, polyethyleneglycol-cationic liposomes (PCL) containing cationic lipid and DSPE-mPEG were prepared by thin film cast-hydration method. The PEG liposomes had approximately $97.0{\pm}1.3\;nm$ of mean particle diameter and $-21.7{\pm}1.2\;mV$ of zeta potential value. PCL had $96.4{\pm}1.8\;nm$ of mean particle diameter and $-8.7{\pm}1.1\;mV$ of zeta potential value with a decrease of about 10 mV compared to the PEG liposomes. Loading of model drug, doxorubicin (DOX), in liposomes were carried out by using remote loading method and the loading efficiency of DOX in liposomes was about $95.0{\pm}1.9%$. Intracellular uptake and cytotoxicity of PCL were higher than that of PEG liposomes to murine B16F10 melanoma cells. In addition, anti-tumor activity of PCL was similar to that of PEG liposomes on growth of A549 human lung carcinoma in BALB/c mice. Consequently, PCL modified with cationic lipid may be applicable as anticancer drug carriers that can increase intracellular uptake and therapeutic efficacy.

  • The changes in water uptake rate, cooking properties, color of rice grains and gelatinization properties of brown and milled rices during storage were studied. The brown and milled rices were stored at $4^{\circ}$ and $25^{\circ}C$ for 5 and 3 months, respectively. The water uptake rate constants of rices during hydration at $30^{\circ}$ were linearly decreased during storage. The volume increase rate also showed similar trend to the water uptake rate. The terminal point of cooking of milled rice at $100^{\circ}$ in a sealed brass vessel was about a half of that of brown rice. The cooking rate of milled rice was 1.8 times faster than that of brown rice. The cooking rate constant of both brown and milled rices linearly decreased with the increase of storage time. The L(lightness) value increased for brown rice grain and remained unchanged for milled rice grain during storage. The peak viscosity of rice flours by amylograph increased during storage, but enthalpy for gelatinization decreased, as measured by differential scanning calorimetry.

  • Mammalian cardiocytes secrete atrial natriuretic peptides (ANPs) into plasma, which cause marked natriuresis, diuresis, vasorelaxation and inhibition of hormone secretions. Aging influences the ability of the kidney both to conserve and to excrete sodium; i.e., in old animals, the excretory capacity of sodium is reduced and the time required to excrete sodium load is prolonged. Therefore, it is possible that animals differing in ages may respond differently to ANP. In the present study, we determined whether the renal, hormonal and vascular effects of ANP may be influenced by aging in conscious rabbits. The plasma renin concentration decreased with aging but plasma ANP concentration was significantly lower only in 24-month-old rabbits. Plasma aldosterone concentration and atrial ANP content did not change by aging. In 1-month-old rabbits, ANP (atriopeptin III, 3 ug/kg) administered intravenously caused hypotension and decreased in plasma renin and aldosterone concentrations, but did not cause diuresis and natriuresis. In 2 to 5 month-old rabbits, ANP caused hypotension, decreases in Plasma renin and aldosterone concentrations and marked renal effects. However, in 24-month-old rabbits, all the above effects of ANP was blunted. With hydration of physiological saline at a rate of 15 ml/kg/h for 2hr, urine volume and glomerular filtration rate did not change but the electrolyte excretion as well as fractional excretion of sodium significantly increased. The plasma concentrations of active renin and aldosterone were decreased but plasma inactive renin and ANP concentrations were increased. The changes in renal function and plasma level of hormone showed no differences in different ages. These results suggest that the peripheral vascular receptors to ANP may develop earlier than those in the kidney, and the attenuated vascular and renal responses to ANP in the old age may be due to age-related modifications in renal function and blood vessel.

  • MgO powder-mixed concrete, expanded at the lower temperature around $850{\sim}1000$ degree celcius, might have long-term expansibility, which could remunerate for the contraction of concrete with delayed expansion, and through the process, the crack resistance of mass concrete might be improved. Currently used expandable concrete additive has three different types : CSA, CaO and MgO. In this study, therefore, such tests as carbonation, chloride diffusivity, freezing-thawing resistance and sulfate resistance after 56 days' curing were implemented and compared the results with the concrete with no MgO mixed to evaluate the durability of 5% MgO-mixed concrete after longer period of time. The degree of hydration for the MgO-mixed cement paste was analyzed after 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, 28 days, and 56 days using SEM, XRD, DSC.

  • Chemical and photochemical processes during storage and preparation rapidly degrade retinol, the most active form of vitamin A. therefore, the efficacy of incorporation into liposomes in order to modulate the kinetics of retinol degradation was investigated. Retinol was readily incorporated into multilamellar liposomes that were prepared form soybean phosphatidylcholine; the extent of the incorporation was 98.14±0.93% at pH 9.0 at a ratio of 0.01 : 1 (wt:wt) retinol : phospholipid. It was only marginally lower at higher retinol concentrations. The pH of the hydration buffer had a small effect. The incorporation efficiency ranged from 99.25±0.47% at pH 3 to 97.45±1.13% at pH 11. The time course of the retinol degradation in the aqueous solution in liposomes was compared to that of free retinol and free retinol with α-tocopherol under a variety of conditions of pH(3, 7, and 11), temperature(4, 25, 37, and 50℃), and light exposure(dark, visible, and UV). The retinol that was incorporated into the liposomes degraded significantly slower than the free retinol or retinol with α-tocopherol at pH 7 and 11. At pH 3, where the free retinol degrades rapidly, the degradation kinetics were similar in liposomes and the presence of α-tocopherol. At pH 7.0 and 4℃ in the light, for example, free aqueous retinol was completely degraded within 2 days, while only 20% of the retinol in the liposomes were degraded after 8 days. In general, the protective effect of the liposome incorporation was greater at low temperatures, at neutral and high pH, and in the dark. The results suggest that protection is greater in the solid, gel phase than in the fluid liquid crystalline phase lipids. These results indicate that the incorporation into liposomes can extend the shelf-life of retinol under a variety of conditions of temperature, pH, and ambient light conditions.
