This paper proposes a bending analysis for a functionally graded piezoelectric (FGP) plate through utilizing a two-variable shear deformation plate theory under simply-supported edge conditions. The number of unknown functions used in this theory is only four. The electric potential distribution is assumed to be a combination of a cosine function along the cartesian coordinate. Applying the analytical solutions of FGP plate by using Navier's approach and the principle of virtual work, the equilibrium equations are derived. The paper also discusses thoroughly the impact of applied electric voltage, plate's aspect ratio, thickness ratio and inhomogeneity parameter. Results are compared with the analytical solution obtained by classical plate theory, first-order-shear deformation theory, higher-order shear deformation plate theories and quasi-three-dimensional sinusoidal shear deformation plate theory.
In this paper, a uniformly convergent numerical scheme is designed for solving singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion problems. The problem is converted to an equivalent weak form and then a Galerkin finite element method is used on a piecewise uniform Shishkin mesh with linear basis functions. The convergence of the developed scheme is proved and it is shown to be almost fourth order uniformly convergent in the maximum norm. To exhibit the applicability of the scheme, model examples are considered and solved for different values of a singular perturbation parameter ε and mesh elements. The proposed scheme approximates the exact solution very well.
Loess, a natural clay, was evaluated as an adsorbent for the decolorization of Acid Orange II, an azo and reactive dye, from aqueous solution. Adsorption studies were performed at $30^{\circ}C$ and the effect of reaction time, loess dosage, initial concentration, loess particle size, pH, agitation rate were investigated to determine the optimum operation conditions. The removal efficiencies of color were measured to evaluate the effectiveness of loess. From this study, it was found that optimal reaction time was 10 min. Color removal efficiencies of Acid Orange II were increased as higher loess dosage, initial concentration and agitation rate. However, color removal efficiencies decreased when pH is high and loess particle becomes large. Adsorption of Acid Orange II fitted to the pseudo-second-order rate kinetics more than first-order rate kinetics. Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm constants and correlation coefficients were calculated and compared. It was concluded that the adsorption data of Acid Orange II onto loess fitted to the Freundlich model more than Langmuir model.
To obtain more accurate responses of laminated composite structures, the effect of transverse shear deformation, transverse normal strain/stress and a nonlinear variation of in-plane displacements with respect to the thickness coordinate need to be considered in the analysis. The improved higher-order theory is used to determine the deflections and natural frequencies of laminated composite structures. A quasi-elastic method is used for the solution of viscoelastic analysis of the laminated composite plates and sandwiches. Solutions of simply-supported laminated composite plates and sandwiches are obtained and the results are compared with those by the 3D elasticity theory and other theories. The improved theory proposed in this paper is shown to predict the deflections and natural frequencies more accurately than all other theories.
The free longitudinal vibration of a circular truncated nanocone is investigated based on the nonlocal elasticity theory. Exact analytical formulations for tapered nanostructures are derived and the nonlinear differential governing equation of motion is developed. The nonlocal small scale effect unavailable in classical continuum theory is addressed to reveal the long-range interaction of atoms implicated in nonlocal constitutive relation. Unlike most previous studies applying the truncation method to the infinite higher-order differential equation, this paper aims to consider all higher-order terms to show the overall nonlocality. The explicit solution of nonlocal stress for longitudinal deformation is determined and it is an infinite series incorporating the classical stress derived in classical mechanics of materials and the infinite higher-order derivative of longitudinal displacement. Subsequently, the first three modes natural frequencies are calculated numerically and the significant effects of nonlocal small scale and vertex angle on natural frequencies are examined. The coupling phenomenon of natural frequency is observed and it is induced by the combined effects of nonlocal small scale and vertex angle. The critical value of nonlocal small scale is defined, and after that a new proposal for determining the range of nonlocal small scale is put forward since the principle of choosing the nonlocal small scale is still unclear at present. Additionally, two different types of nonlocal effects, namely the nonlocal stiffness weakening and strengthening, reversed phenomena existing in nanostructures are observed and verified. Hence the opposite nonlocal effects are resolved again clearly. The nano-engineers dealing with a circular truncated nanocone-based sensors and oscillators may benefit from the present work.

Column experiments were performed in this study to investigate humic acid adhesion to iron oxide-coated sand (ICS) under different experimental conditions including influent humic acid concentration, flow rate, solution pH, and ionic strength/composition. Breakthrough curves of humic acid were obtained by monitoring effluents, and then column capacity for humic acid adsorption ($C_cap$), total adsorption percent (R), and mass of humic acid adsorbed per unit mass of filter media ($q_a$) were quantified from these curves. Results showed that humic acid adhesion was about seven times higher in ICS than in quartz sand at given experimental conditions. This indicates that humic acid removal can be enhanced through the surface charge modification of quartz sand with iron oxide coating. The adhesion of humic acid in ICS was influenced by influent humic acid concentration. $C_cap$ and $q_a$ increased while R decreased with increasing influent humic acid concentration in ICS column. However, the influence of flow rate was not eminent in our experimental conditions. The humic acid adhesion was enhanced with increasing salt concentration of solution. $C_cap$, $q_a$ and R increased in ICS column with increasing salt concentration. On the adhesion of humic acid, the impact of CaCl2 was greater than that of NaCl. Also, the humic acid adhesion to ICS decreased with increasing solution pH. $C_cap$, $q_a$ and R decreased with increasing solution pH. This study demonstrates that humic acid concentration, salt concentration/composition, and solution pH should be controlled carefully in order to improve the ICS column performance for humic acid removal from water.
This paper considers the solution of the stochastic differential equations (SDEs) with random operator and/or random excitation using the spectral SFEM. The random system parameters (involved in the operator) and the random excitations are modeled as second order stochastic processes defined only by their means and covariance functions. All random fields dealt with in this paper are continuous and do not have known explicit forms dependent on the spatial dimension. This fact makes the usage of the finite element (FE) analysis be difficult. Relying on the spectral properties of the covariance function, the Karhunen-Loeve expansion is used to represent these processes to overcome this difficulty. Then, a spectral approximation for the stochastic response (solution) of the SDE is obtained based on the implementation of the concept of generalized inverse defined by the Neumann expansion. This leads to an explicit expression for the solution process as a multivariate polynomial functional of a set of uncorrelated random variables that enables us to compute the statistical moments of the solution vector. To check the validity of this method, two applications are introduced which are, randomly loaded simply supported reinforced concrete beam and reinforced concrete cantilever beam with random bending rigidity. Finally, a more general application, randomly loaded simply supported reinforced concrete beam with random bending rigidity, is presented to illustrate the method.
$Ni(OH)_2$ hollow spheres have been prepared by solvent displacement crystallization using a micro-injection device, and the effect of process parameters such as concentration and the relative ratio of the injection speed of the precursor solution, which is an aqueous solution of $NiSO_4{\cdot}6H_2O$, to isopropyl alcohol of displacement solvent have been investigated. The crystal phases after NaOH treatment are in the ${\beta}-phase$ for all process parameters. A higher concentration of $NiSO_4{\cdot}6H_2O$ aqueous solution is injected by a micro-injection device and bigger $Ni(OH)_2$ hollow spheres with a narrower particle size distribution are formed. The crystallinity and hardness of the as-obtained powder are so poor that hydrothermal treatment of the as-obtained $Ni(OH)_2$ at $120^{\circ}C$ for 24 h in distilled water is performed in order to greatly improve the crystallinity. It is thought that a relative ratio of the injection speed of $NiSO_4{\cdot}6H_2O$ to that of isopropyl alcohol of at least more than 1 is preferable to synthesize Ni(OH)2 hollow spheres. It is confirmed that this solution-based process is very effective in synthesizing ceramic hollow spheres by simple adjustment of the process parameters such as the concentration and the injection speed.
The solubility and physicochemical stability of caroverine hydrochloride (CRV), an antispasmodic, in buffered aqueous solutions were studied using a reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography. The solubilty of the drug at pH 2.76-5.40 was similar at the range 31.9-36.2 mg/ml $(34^{circ}C)$, but, at the pH higher than 6.0, markedly decreased. The use of polyethylene glycol 400 as a cosolvent did not increase the solubility at any compositions examined. Moreover. increasing molar concentration of aqueous phosphate buffer from 0 to 0.5 M remarkably decreased the solubility. The degradation of CRY followed the apparent first-order kinetics. The degradation was accelerated with decreasing pH and increasing storage temperature. The half-lives for the degradation of CRY (1.0 mg/ml) at pH 1.28. 4.01 and 5.93 $(45^{\circ}C)$ were 2.8, 31.4 and 124 hr. respectively. The pHs of incubated solutions were to some extent lowered perhaps due to the formation of acidic degradation products. The addition of disodium edetate (0.01%) to the CRY solution (pH 4.95) retarded 2.5 times the degradation rate at $45^{\circ}C$, but the use of sodium bisulfite (0.1%) accelerated 2.9 times the rate. The activation energy for the CRY solution (20 mg/ml. pH 5.4) containing 0.01% EDTA was calculated to be 5.98 kcal/mole. When the solution was stored under nitrogen displacement in ampoule, there was no significant degradation even after 3 months at $40^{\circ}C$, indicating that protection from oxidation by air (oxygen) is essential for the complete stabilization of CRY solution.
Osmotic power is to produce electric power by using the chemical potential of two flows with the difference of salinity. Water permeates through a semipermeable membrane from a low concentration feed solution to a high concentration draw solution due to osmotic pressure. In a pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) process, river water and wastewater are commonly used as low salinity feed solution, whereas seawater and brine from the SWRO plant are employed as draw solution. During the PRO process using wastewater effluent as feed solution, PRO membrane fouling is usually caused by the convective or diffusive transport of PRO which is the most critical step of PRO membrane in order to prevent membrane fouling. The main objective of this study is to assess the PRO membrane fouling reduction by pretreatment to remove organic matter using coagulation-UF membrane process. The experimental results obtained from the pretreatment test showed that the optimum ferric chloride and PAC dosage for removal of organic matter applied for the coagulation and adsorption process was 50 mg/L as FeCl3 (optimum pH 5.5). Coagulation-UF pretreatment process was higher removal efficiency of organic matter, as also resulting in the substantial improvement of water flux of PRO membrane.
