  • Planar magnetic based design technologies have been widely applied to power design for better cooling and ease of fabrication. The planar transformer and the planar inductor have a low profile characteristics compare to the conventional transformer which would be more cubical in volume. High frequency operation of magnetic components is a main key to achieve high power density of the power module. However, at a high frequency, the skin effect and the proximity effect have to be considered very significantly in magnetic design and also the parasitics in the converter cannot be ignored. This paper deals with the design and the experiment of planar integrated magnetic component. The optimal design for planar magnetics is summarized.

  • In this paper, we propose a post-processing technique developed for the subjective improvement of color resolution in DCT-coded color images. The high frequency components caused by complex object parts are compressed and impaired through DCT-based image processing, so color distortions such as blurs in high saturated regions are observed. It's mainly due to the severe loss of color data as Cb and Cr. Generally, the activities of chroma elements in DCT domain correlate strongly with that of luminance as spatial frequency gets higher, and based on the relations between chroma and luma AC activities, we compensate destructed Cb, Cr coefficients using modifications from Y coefficients. Simulation results show that the proposed method enhances color resolution in high saturated region, and improves the visual quality.

  • A new type of topology with medium-frequency-transformer (MFT) isolation for medium voltage wind power generation systems is proposed in this paper. This type of converter is a high density power conversion system, with high performance features suitable for next generation wind power systems in either on-shore or off-shore applications. The proposed topology employs single-phase cascaded multi-level AC-AC converters on the grid side and three phase matrix converters on the generator side, which are interfaced by medium frequency transformers. This avoids DC-Link electrolytic capacitors and/or resonant L-C components in the power flow path thereby improving the power density and system reliability. Several configurations are given to fit different applications. The modulation and control strategy has been detailed. As two important part of the whole system, a novel single phase AC-AC converter topology with its reliable six-step switching technique and a novel symmetrical 11-segment modulation strategy for two stage matrix converter (TSMC) is proposed at the special situation of medium frequency chopping. The validity of the proposed concept has been verified by simulation results and experiment waveforms from a scaled down laboratory prototype.

  • This paper presents the design of acoustic resonance free and over current limit during transient state consideration electronic ballast for 1.5kW Metal-Halide Lamp(MHL) that employs frequency modulation (FM) technique. The proposed ballast consists of a Full-Bridge(FB) rectifier, a passive power factor correction (PFC) circuit, a full-bridge inverter, an ignitor using LC resonance and a control circuit for frequency modulation. The frequency modulation technique is the most effective solution to eliminate acoustic resonance among other technique. It spreads power spectrum of lamp to reduce the supplied power spectrum under the energy level of eigen-value frequency. Moreover, the proposed ballast is simple and cost effective above conventional ballast. A new PFC circuit is proposed which combines with LCD type and PCSR filter. A new PFC circuit has higher PF and lower THD than conventional LCD type and secure high reliability. Finally, to protected switching components in transient state, the surge current into ballast is limited by increase the switching frequency. Performance of the proposed ballast was validated through computer simulation using Pspice, experimentation and by applying it to an electronic ballast for a prototype 1.5kW MHL.

  • Piezoceramic transducers have been widely used in the health monitoring of civil structures. However, in most cases, they are used as sensors either to measure strain or receive stress waves. This paper proposes a method of using piezoelectric transducers as strain gauges and acoustic emission (AE) sensors simultaneously. The signals received by piezoceramic transducers are decomposed into different frequency components for various analysis purposes. The low-frequency signals are used to measure strain, whereas the high-frequency signals are used as acoustic emission signal associated with local damage. The b-value theory is used to process the AE signal in piezoceramic transducers. The proposed method was applied in the bending failure experiments of two reinforced concrete beams to verify its feasibility. The results showed that the extracted low-frequency signals from the piezoceramic transducers had good agreement with that from the strain gauge, and the processed high-frequency signal from piezoceramic transducers as AE could indicate the local damage to concrete. The experimental results verified the feasibly of structural health monitoring using piezoceramic transducers as strain gauges and AE sensors simultaneously, which can advance their application in civil engineering.

  • The brand sound of vehicle diesel engine is recently one of the important advantage strategies in the automotive company. Because various noise components masked under high frequency level can be audible in quieter driving situation. Many researches have been carried out for subjective and objective assessments on vehicle sounds and noises. In particular, the interior sound quality has been one of research fields that can give high quality feature to vehicle products. Vehicle interior noise above 500 Hz is usually controlled by sound package parts. The materials and geometries of sound package parts directly affect on this high frequency noise. This paper describes the sound quality evaluation method for the vehicle diesel engine noise to establish objective criteria for sound quality assessment. Considering the sensitivity of human hearing to impulsive sounds such as diesel noise, the human auditory mechanism was simulated by introducing temporal masking in the time domain. Furthermore, each of the human auditory organs was simulated by computer codes, providing reasonable analytical explanations of typical human hearing responses to diesel noise. This method finally provides the sound quality index of vehicle diesel engine noise that includes high frequency intermittent offensive sounds caused by impacting excitations of combustion and piston slap.

  • The first attention in designing a transformer for low temperature rise should be to reduce losses. Leakage inductance and temperature rise are two of the more impotent problems facing the magnetic core technology of today's high frequency transformers. Excessive leakage inductance increases the stress on the switching transistors and limits the duty-cycle, and excessive temperature rise can lead the design limitation of high frequency transformer with high current. The flat transformer technology provides a very good solution to the problems of leakage inductance and thermal management for high frequency power. The critical magnetic components and windings are optimized and packaged within a completely assembled module. The turns ratio in a flat transformer is determined as the product of the number of elements or modules times the number of primary turns. The leakage inductance increase proportionately to the number of elements, but since it is reduced as the square of the turns, the net reduction can be very significant. The flat transformer modules use cores which have no gap. This eliminates fringing fluxes and stray flux outside of the core. The secondary windings are formed of flat metal and are bonded to the inside surface of the core. The secondary winding thus surrounds the primary winding, so nearly all of the flux is captured.

  • In order to generate a clock source with low cost and high performance in system on chip(SoC), a relaxation oscillator with stable output characteristics according to PVT(process, voltage and temperature) fluctuation require a low area and a low power. In this paper, we propose a solution to reduce the current loss caused by parasitic components in the conventional relaxation oscillator. Since the slew rate of the bias current and the capacitor are adjusted to be the same through the proposed solution, a relaxation oscillator with low area characteristics is designed for the same clock source frequency implementation. The proposed circuit is designed using the TSMC CMOS 0.18um process. The Simulation results show that the relaxation oscillator using the proposed solution can prevent the current loss of about $279{\mu}A$ and reduce the total chip area by 20.8% compared with the conventional oscillator in the clock source frequency of 96 MHz.
