The value of I$_c$(critical current) in HTS (High Temperature Superconductor) tape has a great influence on B${\bot}$(vertical field). Therefore, in shape design of field coil for the HTSG(High Temperature Superconducting Generator), a method to reduce the B${\bot}$ should be considered in order to maintain the stability and substantial improvement on the performance. On the basis of the magnetic field analysis, this paper deals with various field coil shape according to the iron plate to obtain small B${\bot}$ by using Biot-Savart's law, image method and 2D FEA(2 Dimensional Finite Element Analysis) considering the stress condition of HTS. Moreover, the analysis is verified by comparison with experimental results. And also this paper presents the advanced model by using 3D FEA, in which flux density at armature is calculated in 5kVA class HTSG.

This Paper deals with the short circuit tests of the three-Phase DC reactor type fault current limiter (FCL) in changing of turns ratio of transformers. The experiment of this paper is a preliminary step to develop the FCL's faculties for an application to high voltage transmission line. So, superconducting coil was made of Nb-Ti, low temperature superconductor, and the ratings of the power system of experimental circuit are 400V/7A class. A three-phase DC reactor type FCL consists of three transformers, six diodes, one superconducting coil and one cryostat. The important point of experimental analysis is transient period, the operating lagging time of circuit breaker. As the results of the experiment, the values are referred to the limitation rate about 77% and 90% when the turns ratio of transformer was 1:1 and 2:1 respectively.
Superconducting windings of synchronous machine have to be operated in below the critical temperature, critical current density and critical magnetic field. If one of these characteristics does not satisfied, then the quench occurred in superconducting winding. Especially the armature current dramatically increased as the superconducting generator is short-circuited at the rated load condition and magnetic field in field winding increased due to the armature current. Therefore, damper is required to reduce the magnetic field of field winding which increases reliability of the superconducting generator. Damper dimension can be decided by time constant[1-2]. In this paper the basic model is high-power and low-speed superconducting generator. Damper time constant was calculated from the changed damper thickness and material. Magnetic flux of field coil at the basic model and changed damper time constant model is analyzed.

The low normal zone propagation velocity (NZPV) of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) tape leads to a quench protection problem in HTS magnet applications. To overcome this limitation, various studies were conducted on HTS coils without turn-to-turn insulation (NI coils) that can achieve self-protection. On the other hand, NI coils have some disadvantages such as slow charging and discharging time. Previously, the HTS coils with turn-to-turn insulation (INS coils) were operated in power supply (PS) driven mode, which requires physical contact with the external PS at room-temperature, not in persistent current mode. When a quench occurs in INS coils, the low NZPV delays quench detection and protection, thereby damaging the coils. However, the rotary HTS flux pump supplies the DC voltage to the superconducting circuit with INS coils in a non-contact manner, which causes the INS coils to operate in a persistent current mode, while enabling quench protection. In this paper, a new protection characteristic of HTS coils is investigated with INS coils charging through the rotary HTS flux pump. To experimentally verify the quench protection characteristic of the INS coil, we investigated the current magnitude of the superconducting circuit through a quench, which was intentionally generated by thermal disturbances in the INS coil under charging or steady state. Our results confirmed the protection characteristic of INS coils using a rotary HTS flux pump.

Conventional electric motors are not suitable for aircraft because of their large size and weight. High-temperature superconducting (HTS) motors have high current density, high magnetic field density, and low loss, so they can significantly reduce the size and weight compared to general electric motors. This paper presents the conceptual design and analysis results of HTS motors for electric propulsion in future aircraft. A 2.5 MW HTS motor with a rotational speed of 7,200 RPM was designed and the specific power (kW/kg) was analyzed. The operating temperature of the field coil of the HTS motor is 20K in consideration of LH2 cooling. The stator winding were connected in a multi-phase configuration and Litz wires were used to minimize eddy current losses. As a result, it was confirmed that the specific power of the motor is about 18.67 kW/kg, which is much higher than that of the conventional electric motor.
It has been well known that a toroid is the inevitable shape for a high temperature superconducting (HTS) coil as a component of a large scale superconducting magnetic energy storage system (SMES) because it is the best option to minimize a magnetic field intensity applied perpendicularly to the HTS wires. Even though a perfect toroid coil does not have a perpendicular magnetic field, for a practical toroid coil composed of many HTS pancake coils, some type of perpendicular magnetic field cannot be avoided, which is a major cause of degradation of the HTS wires. In order to suggest an optimum design solution for an HTS SMES system, we need an accurate, fast, and effective calculation for the magnetic field, mechanical stresses, and stored energy. As a calculation method for these criteria, a numerical calculation such as an finite element method (FEM) has usually been adopted. However, a 3-dimensional FEM can involve complicated calculation and can be relatively time consuming, which leads to very inefficient iterations for an optimal design process. In this paper, we suggested an intuitive and effective way to determine the maximum magnetic field intensity in the HTS coil by using an analytic and statistical calculation method. We were able to achieve a remarkable reduction of the calculation time by using this method. The calculation results using this method for sample model coils were compared with those obtained by conventional numerical method to verify the accuracy and availability of this proposed method. After the successful substitution of this calculation method for the proposed design program, a similar method of determining the maximum mechanical stress in the HTS coil will also be studied as a future work.

NMR researches are required high field and high homogeneous super-conducting magnet. Thus superconducting magnets for NMR applications are designed with minimization of coil winding volume satisfied constraints such as field strength, field homogeneity, etc. In this paper, we are discussed optimal design of high field super-conducting magnet for NMR applications. For a design example, we designed unshielded superconducting magnet for 600MHz NMR spectrometer with 100mm room temperature bore size and obtained 14.1011[T] field strength and 1.33 ppm field homogeneity.
This paper reports advantages of an insulationless high temperature superconductor (HTS) pancake coil compared with an insulated HTS pancake coil. The various characteristics of the insulationless HTS pancake coil were evaluated under charge-discharge conditions. Also over-current test was performed and the results were analysed to demonstrate that in terms of stability insulationless HTS pancake coil outperforms existing insulated HTS pancake coil.
In this study, superconducting coil arrangements and cryostat concept design were conducted for the development of 13.2kV/630A bifilar winding type high temperature superconducting(HTS) fault current limiter(FCL) with YBCO coated conductor(CC) wire. The coil consists of several layers with unique non-inductive solenoid winding method. Six types of HTS coil arrangements were investigated for the optimal insulation design of HTS FCL. And, conceptual design of cryostat was conducted for the decrement of thermal invasion and the prevention of low voltage insulation breakdown in the LHe which is used as pressurization gas in sub-cooling condition of liquid nitrogen(LN2). As the results, it was found that the modified suspended type cryostat with horizontal coil arrangement is beneficial to the insulation design of 13.2kV level bifilar winding type HTS FCL.
To reduce the power loss in normal state, non-inductively wound high temperature superconducting (HTS) coils are used for fault current limiter (FCL) application. Non-inductively wound coils can be classified into two types: solenoid type and pancake type. These two types have different electrical and thermal and mechanical characteristics due to their winding structure difference. This paper deals with the current limiting characteristics, magnetic field analysis of the two coils. Simulation using finite element method (FEM) was used to analyze the magnetic field distribution and inductance of the coils. Short circuit test using stabilizer-free coated conductor (CC) was also carried out. We can compare the characteristics of the two types of coil by using the data obtained from simulation and short circuit test. We confirmed the feasibility of FCL application by the analysis about the characteristics of non-inductively wound coil using CC.
