  • Objectives: This study assessed the influences of various factors that are related to youth smoking such as gender, age and type of school, and we wanted to provide supporting data for tailored and effective policy initiatives to reduce adolescent smoking. Methods: A self-report survey was conducted on 14,910 teen-age students who were selected based on the nationwide distribution of students in large and small cities and counties, the gender ratio of the students and the ratio of students attending various type of school at 38 middle and high schools in six representative areas of each province. The survey was handled and managed by a health education teacher at each school. Binary and multinomial logistic regression was used in the analyses. Results: Smoking by adolescents was associated with gender, age and even height. Male high school students tended to smoke more than female high school students, but this differences was not significant for middle school students. The older the adolescents were, the more likely that they smoked, except for the female high school students. Height was meaningful for all adolescents, except for the boys at the vocational high schools. Monthly allowance was significant for all adolescents. School factors such as type of school and the students' school performance were also crucial factors. Attending a vocational high school was strongly related to smoking, especially for girls. Students' school performance and the perceived level of stress were strongly associated with smoking, especially for boys. Home factors such as the relationship with parents and conversation time with family members were closely related to smoking behavior. Knowledge about the health hazard of smoking was also found to be strongly related to adolescent smoking. Conclusions: In conclusion, demographic factors, school factors, home surroundings and the perception on the harmfulness of smoking are strongly related to adolescent smoking behavior, but these differ from gender and type of school.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship among stress, physical symptoms and coping styles of high school students. Methods: In this study, 356 second grade high school students (male 181, female 175) from two schools, which were located in Dae-gu city, participated in the study. Mean scores with standard deviation, T-test, ANOVA, Pearson's Correlation Coefficient were used to analyze the data. Analysis was done using the SPSS/PC program. Results: The stress level of high school students averaged 2.59 out of a possible score range between 1 and 5, and physical symptoms, 2.38. The average level for coping styles was 1.36 of a possible range between 0 and 3. The correlations between stress and physical symptoms (r=.506), between physical symptoms and coping styles (r=.304) and between stress and coping styles (r=.363) were all significant. Conclusions: To guide the high school health program, we must try to understand the traits of the students and make efforts to identify personal and concrete difficulties in coping. Therefore it is necessary to use a stress care program to systematically improve their health.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the gender differences of elementary, junior high, and high school students in the artificial intelligence ethics awareness (hereinafter referred to as AIEA). This is a study to investigate whether there is a gender difference in the AIEA, and if so, when the gender difference will occur. This study was conducted with 198 elementary school students (98 female students, 100 male students), 265 middle school students (166 female students, 99 male students), and 114 high school students (58 female students and 56 male students) in I Metropolitan City. The results are as follows: First, a gender difference in the AIEA between all boys and girls was confirmed. Second, the gender difference in the AIEA tended to be solidified as the school age increased from elementary school to middle school and high school. Third, female students at all stages of elementary school, junior high school, and high school are not yet very reliable in artificial intelligence, and there is a greater concern about non-discrimination than boys. It turns out that they have a negative position on permission to enter the territory. Fourth, the interaction effects of school age and gender have been identified in 'stability and reliability,' and in 'permit and limit' categories. Taken together, these results show that an educational strategy that approaches the gender equality perspective of the educational program is necessary so that there will be no gender difference in the AIEA during artificial intelligence education activities.

  • Purpose : This study identified the patterns of smoking of students attending middle schools and high schools, and analyzed its related health risk behaviors. Methods: The data was based on the survey of 1,517 middle students and 911 high students residing in Kyung-Gi district. Results: The current smoking rates of male and female middle students are 5.3%, and 3.1% respectively. The rates of experiences in smoking are 21.4% and 16.0%(male/female). The current smoking rates of male and female high students are 17.9% and 8.5%, whereas the rates of experiences in smoking are 34.2% and 23.3% respectively. On the other hands, 14.1% of middle students and 12.0% of high students were exposed to smoking for at least 2 hours per day. The majority of middle and high school smokers started smoking when they were in middle or high school. And the most popular places to smoke were children's playgrounds, public open area., parks, and so on. Whether having a smoker as a friend or not and students' own perception towards smoking influenced the decisions to smoke for middle and high students. Both middle and high students, regardless of their gender, who have higher rates of drinking experiences and the hours of computer usage were found to have higher rates of smoking experiences. Meanwhile, the sleeping hours is in reverse proportion to the rate of smoking experiences. There was statistically significant difference in smoking experiences related to the degree of obesity only in the female high students: underweight and overweight students showed higher rates of smoking experiences than those falling in the normal weight range. Conclusion: For the effective prevention of adolescence smoking, it is necessary to adopt a comprehensive approach, which classifies the target population according to their age and sex and cover all health risk behaviors.

Body shape satisfaction was significantly higher in Chinese students (P < 0.001) compared to Korean students. 76.2% of Korean students and 72.7% of Chinese students wanted a thinner body shape than their present body shapes. Experiences of weight control, laxative or diuretics uses, eating during weight control, and vomiting after eating were significantly higher in Korean students (P < 0.05-P < 0.001) compared to Chinese students. The score for dietary habits was significantly higher in Chinese students (P < 0.001) compared to Korean students, suggesting a more desirable dietary habit among Chinese students. Students of both countries showed a significantly positive correlation between body shape satisfaction and dietary habits, suggesting that as body shape satisfaction increases, dietary habits become more desirable. In conclusion, Korean female students showed a more distorted body image perception and had more poor dietary habits than Chinese students. Nutritional education for the establishment of normal body weight, proper body image perception, and healthy dietary habits are needed.

The volunteers were 560 high school students in 8 provinces, but 511 students were analyzed. It was used questionnaire method as an instrument tool. The questions were composed with socio-demographic characteristics, physical health condition by CMI. and the evaluation of food consumption by 24 hours recall method. Anthrophometric measurement of height and weight was used the data of health chart of each school-class. The family situation of the subjects was mostly nuclear family(73%), agricultural work(53%), and normal living situation(75%). The students of the BMI range of 18-23 were 71%. but those of the overweight(over 23) were 15%. The individual characteristics were different in BMI. Female and third grade students were more of BMI scores. The overall nutrient intakes of students were low compared with Korean RDA of adolescent. especially iron. calcium. vitamin A, and riboflavin. The mean adequacy ratio(MAR) of nutrient intakes was 0.45$\pm$0.23 only. The energy nutrients, ash, and vitamin A intakes were significantly different according to the different BMI groups. But the other mineral and vitamin intakes were not different according to BMI. By the correlation of individual characters with BMI, height was negatively and weight and school grade were positively correlated, but sleeping time and study accomplishment were not correlated. By the correlation of nutrient intakes with BMI, there were negative correlation with the intakes of energy, carbohydrates, potassium, and thiamin. According to this results, We concluded that Korean high-school students living in rural were lower intake of nutrients(iron, vitamin A, and riboflavin) and unbalanced nutrient intakes(MAR of 0.45$\pm$0.23). The state of lower intakes of energy nutrients and vitamin A intakes in higher BMI group mean the students spend their effort to reduce BMI for avoiding obesity. But they need to balanced diet. and good nutrient intakes. These situations would be necessary for students to ameliorate quality of living in rural.
