We discovered the formation of C60 aggregates in solution by means of photoluminescence spectroscopic study on C60 in solutions. From the in-depth investigation of temperature dependence of the luminescence of C60 in toluene, benzene and CS2 solutions, we reported that the C60 aggregates are formed during cooling at the freezing temperature of these solvents. Furthermore, the C60 aggregates can be changed to stable structures by irradiating with UV pulse-laser (Nd:YAG laser, 355nm). As a consequence, we could obtain nano-scale photo-polymerized C60 clusters, which appear as round-shaped nano- scale particles in high resolution transmission electron-microscopy (HRTEM) images. However, the yield of the nano-scale C60 clusters obtained by this method is too small. So we designed and developed a system to obtain C60 cluster of macroscopic quantity by using ultrasonic nebulizer. In this system, C60 solution was vaporized to several micro-sized droplets in vacuum, resulting in the formation of C60 aggregates by evaporating solvent (toluene). The system was invented to produce nano-scale carbon clusters by the irradiation of UV light upon C60 aggregates in vacuum. We have characterized the products, C60 cluster, obtained from the system by using UV absorption spectra and HPLC spectra. Although the products have a possibility of inclusion various forms of C60 cluster, results support that the product formed from the system by using vaporizer method establishes a new method to obtain C60 cluster in macroscopic quantity. In the presentation, the details of the system and the results of characterization are reported.
For potential application to quantum mechanical devices, nano-composite thin films, consisting of GaAs quantum dots dispersed in SiO$_2$ glass matrix, were fabricated and studied in terms of structural, chemical, and optical properties. In order to form crystalline GaAs quantum dots at room temperature, uniformly dispersed in $SiO_2$matrix, the composite films were made to consist of alternating layers of GaAs and $SiO_2$in the manner of a superlattice using RF magnetron sputter deposition. Among different film samples, nominal thickness of an individual GaAs layer was varied with a total GaAs volume fraction fixed. From images of High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM), the formation of GaAs quantum dots on SiO$_2$was shown to depend on GaAs nominal thickness. GaAs deposits were crystalline and GaAs compound-like chemically according to HRTEM and XPS analysis, respectively. From measurement of optical absorbance using a spectrophotometer, absorption edges were determined and compared among composite films of varying GaAs nominal thicknesses. A progressively larger shift of absorption edge was noticed toward a blue wavelength with decreasing GaAs nominal thickness, i.e. quantum dots size. Band gaps of the composite films were also determined from Tauc plots as well as from PL measurements, displaying a linear decrease with increasing GaAs nominal thickness.

Ginsenoside Rg3 was reported to have important biological activities. We demonstrate conjugation and quantification procedures of ginsenoside Rg3 to gold nanoparticles for future biological and medical applications. Ginsenoside Rg3 was conjugated to spherical gold nanoparticles using a bifunctional heptaethylene glycol linker. The sulfhydryl group of heptaethylene glycol was adsorbed onto gold nanoparticles, and carboxylic acid end of heptaethylene glycol was bonded through a hydroxyl group of Rg3 via ester bond formation. The conjugation of Rg3 was characterized with various spectroscopic techniques, high resolution-transmission electron microscopy, and using Rg3 monoclonal antibody. The Rg3- functionalized gold nanoparticles were $4.7{\pm}1.0$ nm in diameter with a surface charge of -4.12 mV. The total number of Rg3 molecules conjugated to a 3.6 mL solution of gold nanoparticle was determined to be $9.5{\times}10^{14}$ corresponding to ~6 molecules of Rg3/gold nanoparticle. These results suggest that ginsenoside Rg3 is successfully conjugated to gold nanoparticles via heptaethylene glycol linker. The quantification was performed by using Rg3 monoclonal antibody without interference of gold's intrinsic color.
The mechanisms of selective oxidation of intercritically annealed CMnAl TRIP steels in a Continuous Galvanizing Line (GCL) were studied by cross-sectional observation of the surface and sub-surface regions by means of High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM). The selective oxidation and nitriding of an intercritically annealed CMnAl TRIP steel in a controlled dew point 10%$H_2+N_2$ atmosphere resulted in the formation of c-xMnO.$MnO_2$ (1${\leq}$x<3) and c-xMnO.$Al_2O_3$ ($x{\geq}1$) particles on the steel surface. Single crystal c-xMnO.$SiO_2$ ($2{\leq}x{\leq}4$) oxide particles were also observed on the surface. A thin film of crystalline c-xMnO.$SiO_2$ (2${\leq}$x<3) and c-xMnO.$Al_2O_3$ ($x{\geq}1$) was present between these particles. In the sub-surface region, internal oxidation, nitriding and intermetallic compound formation were observed. In the first region, large crystalline c-xMnO.$SiO_2$ ($1{\geq}x{\geq}2$) and c-xMnO.$Al_2O_3$ ($x{\geq}1$) oxides particles were present. In the second region, c-AlN particles were observed, and in a third region, small $MnAl_x$ (x>1) intermetallic compound particles were observed.

The effects of reactive ion etching (RIE) of $SiO_2$ layer in $CHF_3/C_2F_6$ on the underlying Si surface have been studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), secondary ion mass spectrometer, Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy, and high resolution transmission electron microscopy. We found that two distinguishable modified layers are formed by RIE : (i) a uniform residue surface layer of 4 nm thickness composed entirely of carbon, fluorine, oxygen, and hydrogen with 9 different kinds of chemical bonds and (ii) a contaminated silicon layer of about 50 nm thickness with carbon and fluorine atoms without any observable crystalline defects. To search the removal condition of the silicon surface residue, we monitored the changes of surface compositions for the etched silicon after various post treatments as rapid thermal anneal, $O_2$, $NF_3$, $SF_6$, and $Cl_2$ plasma treatments. XPS analysis revealed that $NF_3$ treatment is most effective. With 10 seconds exposure to $NF_3$ plasma, the fluorocarbon residue film decomposes. The remained fluorine completely disappears after the following wet cleaning.
A great deal of attention has been focused on ZnO nanowires for various electronics and optoelectronics applications. in the pursuit of next generation nanodevices, it would be highly preferred if well-ordered ZnO nanowires of lower dimension could be fabricated on silicon. Before the growth of nanowires, silicon substrates were selectively etched using silicon nitride as masking layer. Vertical aligned ZnO nanowires were grown by metal organic chemical vapor deposition on patterned silicon substrate. The shape of nanostructures was greatly influenced by the micropatterned surface of the substrate. The aspect ratio, packing fraction and the number density of nanowires on top surface are around 10, 0.8 and $10^7\;per\;mm^2$, respectively, whereas the values are 20, 0.3 and $5\times10^7\;per\;mm^2$, respectively, towards the bottom of the cavity. XRD patterns suggest that the nanostructures have good crystallinity. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy confirmed the single crystalline growth of the ZnO nanowires along [0001] direction.

To compare the antifungal effect of two nanomaterials (NMs), nanoparticles of zinc oxide were synthesized by a chemical route and zinc oxide-based nanobiohybrids were obtained using green synthesis in an extract of garlic (Allium sativum). The techniques of X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Infrared (IR) and Ultraviolet Visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopies and Scanning (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopies (TEM) were used to determine the characteristics of the nanomaterials synthesized. The results showed that the samples obtained were of nanometric size (< 100 nm). To compare their antifungal capacity, their effect on Cercospora sp. was evaluated. Test results showed that both nanomaterials had an antifungal capacity. The nanobiohybrids (green route) gave an inhibition of fungal growth of ~72.4% while with the ZnO-NPs (chemical route), inhibition was ~87.1%. Microstructural studies using High Resolution Optical Microscopy (HROM) and ultra-structural analysis using TEM carried out on the treated strains demonstrated the effect of the nanofungicides on the vegetative and reproductive structures, as well as on their cell wall. To account for the antifungal effect presented by ZnO-NPs and ZnO nanobiohybrids on the fungi tested, effects reported in the literature related to the action of nanomaterials on biological entities were considered. Specifically, we discuss the electrical interaction of the ZnO-NPs with the cell membrane and the biomolecules (proteins) present in the fungi, taking into account the n-type nature of the ZnO semiconductor and the electrical behavior of the fungal cell membrane and that of the proteins that make up the protein crown.
We present the structural and optical properties of Au@TiO2 core-shell microsphere structure prepared by a hydrothermal synthesis method. As a way to improve the efficiency of organic solar cells, the Au@TiO2 core-shell microsphere was synthesized to use the local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) phenomenon. The synthesized results were confirmed to have the Au@TiO2 core-shell structure using a high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. An absorption was observed to occur at 527 nm belonging to the visible light region using a visible light spectroscopy, which supports the LSPR phenomenon. We suggest that the Au@TiO2 core-shell microsphere is highly likely to be applied to organic solar cells including dye-sensitized solar cells. In addition, we expect it to be widely used not only in the energy but also in the bio as well as in the environmental fields.
