  • Inhibitory effect of water and ethyl acetate extract of 60 kinds of herbal medicines was investigated on ${\beta}-glucuronidase$. Among water extract of them, Galla Rhois had the most potent ${\beta}-glucuronidase-inhibitory\;activity$. Termaliae Fructus, Amomi Tsa-ko Fructus and Arecae Semen were also potent inhibitors. Among ethyl acetate extract of them, Galla Rhois had the most potent ${\beta}-glucuronidase-inhibitory\;activity$. Nelumbinis Semen. Ephedrae Radix and Termaliae Fructus were also potent inhibitors. The extract of Galla Rhois had potent hepatoprotective effect on $CCl_4-induced$ hepatotoxicity of rats. These results suggest that the ${\beta}-glucuronidase$ seems to be closely related to the liver injury, which could be prevented by the inhibitor of ${\beta}-glucuronidase$.

  • The protective effects of the water extracts of nine kinds of medicinal herbs, which have been reputed to having the hepatoprotective activity in Chinese herbal medicine, on BNL cl.2 cells using a MTT assay were investigated. Five extracts including Coriolus versica, Curcuma longa, Phellinus linteus, Po-lygonum aviculare, and Salvia miltiorrhiza showed the protective effects on BNL cl.2 cells damaged by $CCl_4$ with $ED_{50}$ values of less than $100\;{\mu}g/ml$. Silymarin had been used as a positive control.

  • Garlic(Allium sativum L.) is one of the oldest cultivated plants and has been used throughout the world as food supplement and folk medicine for thousands of years. In modem times a number of garlic derived products are introduced on the market as health food supplement in ever growing scale. In 1844 German chemist Wertheim investigated the garlic first time chemically and thereafter many kinds of organosulfur compounds were isolated and their biological activities were elucidated scientifically. The main biological activities are antibacterial, antifungal, antithrombotic, cholesterol-lowering, antineoplastic and hepatoprotective activities. Chemical works as well as therapeutic and preventive effects of garlic are reviewed.

  • This study was done to investigate the protective effect of Alnus japonica Steude on hepatotoxicity in carbon let-rachloride $(CCl_4)$ intoxicated rats. Alnus japonica Steud was extracted with methanol and fractionated with hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate, butanol and water. Rats were treated with those orally once a day for 6 days. The activities of aminotransferase and ${\gamma}-glutamyltranspeptidase$ and contents of cholesterol, TG and hepatic lipid peroxide in butanol fraction pretreated rats were significantly decreased compared to the only $CCl_4$ treated rats but the content of glutathione was significantly increased compared to the only $CCl_4$ treated rats. Also activities of hepatic superoside dismutase, catalase, glutathione perpxidase in butanol fraction pretreated rats were signigicantly decreased compared to the only $CCl_4$ treated rats. These result indicated that butanol fraction of Alnus japonica Steude showed hepatoprotective effect in carbon tetrachloride intoxicated rats.

  • Solanum lyratum (Solanaceae) has been used as a traditional analgesic, antipyretic and hepatoprotective agents in Korea. In this study, we investigated the hepatoprotective effect of ethylacetate extract of Solanum lyratum (SL) on the dimethylnitrosamine (DMN)-induced liver damage in rats. Oral administration of SL (150, 300 mg/kg daily for 4 weeks) into the DMN-treated rats remarkably prevented the elevation of serum alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase and alkaline phosphatase levels. • The alcoholic extract of Momordica dioica roots significantly reduced $CCl_4$ induced hepatotoxicity in rats upon oral administration (200 mg/kg), as judged from the serum enzyme levels [serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminases (SGOT), serum glutamate pyruvate transminases (SGPT), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP)]. These results were comparable with sylimarin (1.25 mg/kg, p.o.). The alcoholic extract inhibited the formation of oxyten derived free radicals (ODFR) in vitro with $4000\;{\mu}g/ml$ ascorbic system. The alcoholic extract also significantly reduced carrageenan-induced paw edema when administered orally (200 mg/kg) and the activity was comparable with ibuprofen(200 mg/kg, p.o.).

  • The protective effect of Bifidobacterium breve K-110, K-111 and B. infantis K-525 on carbon tetrachloride induced hepatotoxicity in rats was investigated. Among them, B. infantis K-525 had the most potent hepatoprotective activity. It reduced serum aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase levels to 51% and 80% of the $CCl_{4}-treated$ groups, respectively. In rat liver homogenate intoxificated with $CCl_{4}$, B. infantis K-525 inhibited in vitro as well as in vivo lipid peroxidation more than the other Bifidobacteria.

  • The effects of various fractions from the whole plant of Pelvetia siliquosa Tseng et Chang (Fucaceae) on the $CCl_4$-induced hepatotoxicity as well as on streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes in rats were investigated. The ether fraction exhibited a potent rat lens aldose reductase (RLAR) inhibition in vitro and showed a significant inhibition of not only serum glucose concentrations but also sorbitol accumulations in the lens, red blood cells and sciatic nerves in the STZ-induced diabetic rats. When administered orally in Sprague-Dawley rats, $H_{2}O$ fraction was found to cause a significant inhibition of the rise in the serum transaminase activities in $CCl_4$-intoxicated rats. These results suggested that this plant might possess constituents with hepatoprotective, anti-diabetic effects and those effects on diabetic complications.

  • Several biological activities of extracts from roots of Cichorium intybus Linne (Compositae) were studied in this paper. The antiinflammatory activity of the methanol extract of this root was investigated against carrageenin induced edema in rat‘s hind paw. Significant inhibitory effects were observed at the dose of 1,000 mg/kg and were compared with aspirin as a control. The hepatoprotective activities of the methanol extract, ethylacetate and butanol fraction were studied on mice whose livers are damaged by $CCl_4$. The serum transaminase activities (ALT, AST) were reduced at the dose of 1,000 mg/kg of the methanol extract, 500 mg/kg of ethylacetate and butanol fraction, respectively. The bile juice secretion was also increased significantly from each fraction. The antidiabetic activity was examined on strepto-zotocin-induced diabetic rats with methanol extract. Methanol extract gave a significant reduction of blood glucose levels in 1 week and 3 weeks.

  • Isowogonin, 5,8-dihydroxy-7-methoxyflavone, is a flavonoid isolated from the root of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, a medicinal plant traditionally used since the ancient time. It was thought to possess a variety of biological activities, such as antioxidation, anti-inflammation and hepatoprotective effect. But a quantity of isowogonin obtained from Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi is not that enough for in vivo test. There have been no appropriate approaches available for a facile synthesis of isowogonin. So we describe a concise and efficient scheme for synthesis of isowogonin from a commercial available 2,4,6-trimethoxyphenol, which includes the Fries rearrangement and selective demethylation as key steps.
