Comparison of the Onset Times of Antigravity Flexor Muscle Activity During Head Lift in Supine Position between Children with Cerebral Palsy and Healthy Children (누운자세에서 머리들기 시 정상아동과 뇌성마비아동 간의 항굴근 수축 개시 시간 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the muscle onset time of sternocleidomastoid (SCM) and rectus abdominalis (RA) muscle activity during head lift in supine position between cerebral palsy and healthy children. Ten cerebral palsy children and 10 age, sex-matched healthy children were recruited for this study. Muscle activity of the SCM and RA were collected by surface electromyography (MP100SWS). Results demonstrated that the muscle onset time order was not significantly different between cerebral palsy children and healthy children. However, the DMHT and ST between SCM and RA during head lift in supine position were significantly shorter in healthy children than in cerebral palsy children. Further studies are needed to clarify the mechanism of differences in muscle activation patterns during head lift in supine position in cerebral palsy children compared with healthy children.

Development of the Chest Wall in Children with Cerebral Palsy according to GMFCS Levels (뇌성마비 아동의 대동작운동기능 수준에 따른 흉곽발달 양상)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to provide quantitative data regarding development of the chest wall in children with cerebral palsy (CP) according to Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) levels and age using the radiological image diameter measurement method. Methods: Subjects included 112 children with CP and 110 healthy children, All of the children underwent simple chest x-ray. The diameters of the upper chest ($D_{apex}$) and lower chest ($D_{base}$) were measured on the anteroposterior (AP) view of a chest x-ray, and the $D_{apex}$ to $D_{base}$ ratio was calculated. Chest wall ratios were compared among children with CP at GMFCS levels I ~ III, GMFCS levels IV and V, and healthy children. Results: The results showed significant differences between the upper and lower chest wall diameters of children with CP at GMFCS levels IV and V, and healthy children (F=4.54, p=0.01; F=3.20, p=0.04). Results of comparison between the chest wall ratios of children with CP and healthy children, showed that the upper chest walls of healthy children were significantly larger in children younger than 48 months (p<0.05), and both the upper and lower chest walls of healthy children were significantly larger compared to children with CP in children older than 48 months (p<0.05). Conclusion: Radiographic measurement for examination of chest wall development is relatively simple, and the results yield quantitative data on development of the chest wall for children with CP. In addition, therapeutic interventions may be considered based on the results.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the healthy family education, healthy family counseling, a healthy family culture, and healthy families integrated programs for single parent families in family support centers, The data collected came from 59 family support centers located in Seoul and Kyunggi-Do, Korea. Subjects included both single parents and their children. The children were of elementary school age. The types of programs were education, counseling, culture, and integrated program. Education programs were process separately for the parents and for the children. Counseling programs were mostly group-type program that aimed at improving the parent-children relationship. The contents included sections on anger management, reducing stress, enriching self-esteem. The culture programs involved experiences, camps that included cooking, watching movies, similar activities. Integrated programs involved respite support, rearing support, mentor-mentee partnerships, and the formation of self-help groups.

Comparison of Weight Control Behavior and Self-esteem between Healthy Weight and Obese Children (건강체중아 및 비만아의 체중조절 경험, 식습관, 운동습관 및 자아존중감 비교)

  • The study compared eating and physical activity related behaviors and self-esteem between healthy weight and obese children by presenting 175 primary school students in Busan City and Gyeongsang province with a self-reported questionnaire and Coopersmith's self-esteem inventory. The questionnaire was composed of 25 items, weighted primarily by a Likert scale. The self-esteem inventory presented to the students comprised 25 'Yes' or 'No' response questions to different statements. The study found obese children were more likely to think they always had to control their weight (p=0.000), reportedly measuring their weights significantly more than the healthy weight children. Also the study found that obese children are significantly more likely than healthy weight children to go on a diet, however neither group were successful in losing weight as the duration of the diet in 79.5% of the total sample lasted no longer than one week. In comparison to healthy weight children, obese children reported that they consumed fewer snacks during the day, avoided snacking subsequent to an evening meal and exercised more frequently for as long as physically possible. Interestingly, we found no difference of reported self-esteem between groups, though the obese group were more likely to answer that their parents did not understand them (p=0.055) Based on these findings, we concluded that the obese children who participated in the study were more aware of their body weights than the healthy weights children. It may be necessary to investigate further the relationship between self-esteem and participants' weights while considering other variables such as personality and body image.

Development and Application of an Education Program for Healthy Dietary Life for Elementary School Aftercare Class Children (초등학생 저학년 돌봄교실의 건강식생활 교육프로그램 개발 및 적용)

  • Objectives: This study aimed to develop a school-centered healthy eating environment for children in elementary care classrooms and prevent incorrect eating habits and obesity through the development and application of standardized healthy eating habit-forming educational materials. Methods: Ten schools in eight districts of Gyeonggi-do and 400 students from 19 care classes were selected. Based on the developed educational materials, the program was applied to students once in two weeks. 'Notices for Parents' forms were also sent to the students' home to educate their parents. Pre and post-surveys were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the education. The pre-education, education, and aftercare were conducted from September 28 to September 31, 2016, from October 3 to November 30, 2016, and from December 5 to December 9, 2016, respectively. Results: The healthy eating program for elementary care classes was designed to develop a school-centered healthy eating environment and provide standardized educational material for healthy eating habits. Twelve educational topics were developed: , , , , , , , , , , , and . Moreover, the materials were produced in four forms: for students, for after school caring teachers, for external specialists, and for parents. The effectiveness evaluation was conducted to confirm the application of the program. The average eating habits score was 3.3 ± 0.6, with no significant difference between before and after application. The score of overall satisfaction of the education was 3.9 ± 0.9. The most satisfying content was 'Did you get to know how to eat evenly?'. Significant increases were observed in two contents for parents regarding their children's knowledge changes after the education: 'Five nutrients needed for growing children' and 'Knowing sugar foods and sugar-containing foods'. On the other hand, their educational satisfaction was 3.6 ± 0.6, which was lower than the children's satisfaction. This might be because their education was conducted only through the 'Notices for Parents' form. Conclusions: In the long term, the healthy eating habit-formation education for lower elementary school children is expected to be beneficial. To prevent obesity and establish healthy eating habits of children, it is important to develop healthy eating education programs centered on elementary school aftercare classes, including the development of educational materials and an application system through connection with the home and community.

An Exploratory Study on Children's Anxiety Related to Disease Characteristics (환아의 질병특성에 따른 불안에 대한 탐색적 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the level of children's anxiety related to disease characteristics The subjects of this study were 72 childrens (6year-10 year) who were admitted to the pediatric wards at University Hospital and 24 healthy children, and 24 mothers of children with fatal & chronic illness. The data were collected with sarason's Anxiety scale for children & spielberger's State Trait Anxiety Inventory for mothers and analyzed of One way Anova, Duncun Test, Pearson correlation, and T-test. The results of this study were as follows : 1) There was significant difference in children's anxiety related to disease characteristics(P<0.01) Fatally ill children showed highest level of anxiety and chronically, acutely ill children in order. And there was no significant difference in anxiety between acutely ill children and healthy children. There was significant difference in anxiety between groups of ill and healthy children(P<0.01) .The anxiety of ill children was higher than that of healthy children. 2) There was no significant correlation between children's anxiety and their age. 3) There was no significant difference in children's anxiety related to frequency of hospital admission. 4) There was significant correlation between children's anxiety and duration of illness(P<0.01). The longer the duration of illness is, the higher children's anxiety is. 5) There was significant difference in mothers' anxiety between groups of fatally ill and chronically ill children(P<0.05). The anxiety of mothers of fatally ill children was higher than that of mothers of chronically ill children. 6) There was no significant correlation between children's anxiety of fatal and chronic illness and their mothers' anxiety.

Psychometric validation of the Child Healthy Lifestyle Profile in South Korea: a cross-sectional study

  • Purpose: This study aimed to validate the Child Healthy Lifestyle Profile as an instrument for screening healthy behaviors in school-aged children in South Korea. Methods: Self-reported questionnaires were administered to 454 students, comprising elementary-school students (n=221) and child cancer survivors (n=233). Reliability and validity were assessed using Cronbach's α, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Results: Cronbach's α, as a reliability test, was 0.87. Varimax rotation yielded nine factors with eigenvalues greater than 1 in the EFA, which explained 61.0% of the total variance. In the CFA, both convergent and discriminant validities were acceptable. Therefore, the Child Healthy Lifestyle Profile was validated as an assessment tool for Korean school-aged children. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, the Child Healthy Lifestyle Profile was identified as a reliable and valid instrument for assessing healthy lifestyles in elementary-school children in South Korea.

Oral health knowledge and practice of school children in the upper grades in a WHO healthy city, Changwon (건강도시로 지정된 창원시 일부 초등학교 고학년 학생의 구강보건 지식과 실천)

  • Obiectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the oral health knowledge and practice of elementary school children in the upper grades in a WHO healthy city for the development of oral health education programs gearing toward improving oral health care habits and oral health. The subjects in this study were 379 sixth-grade children in an elementary school in a WHO healthy city, Changwon. Methods : The questionnaire used in the study covered general characteristics with five items, oral health knowledge with 35 items and oral health care practices with 24 items. The oral health knowledge category consisted of general oral health knowledge with 13 items, knowledge on oral hygiene management with 11 items, knowledge on fluoride use with 8 items and healthy diet knowledge with 3 items. The oral health care practice category consisted of general oral health care practice with six items, practice on oral hygiene management with 11 items, practice related to fluoride use with four items, and healthy diet practice with 3 items. Results : The surveyed school children got a mean of 46.1 and 40.8 on oral health knowledge and oral health care practices, respectively out of 100 points. In the knowledge category, they scored the lowest on healthy diet knowledge with 12.6, and in the practice category, they scores the lowest on the practices related to fluoride use with 21.4. According to the regression analysis, gender had a significant impact on their oral health knowledge. The boys lagged behind the girls in that regard. Their oral health care practices were under the significant influence of knowledge level. Conclusions : Systematic education programs should be provided to prevent dental caries and promote oral health of school children, and the type of programs that stress actual oral health care is especially important.

The Characters of Autonomic Nervous System in Heart Weak Children through Analysis of Heart Rate Variability (심박변이도 분석을 통한 심계 허약아의 자율신경계 특성)

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to evaluate the characteristics of autonomic nervous system in heart-weakened children via analyzing heart rate variability (HRV) compare to healthy children. Methods Among the children who have visited the department of pediatrics at OO oriental medicine hospital, the subjects were composed of 62 elementary school students without cardiac disorder, who have yet develop secondary sexual characteristics. Results 1. Mean HRT and SDNN of the heart-weakened group of children were lower than the healthy group, but with no statistical significance. 2. Heart-weakened children had higher LF norm and LF/HF ratio, but lower HF norm than healthy children. The rest of the Frequency Domain Index have no significant differences. 3. Heart-weak score showed a positive correlation with Mean HRT and LF/HF ratio. Conclusions Heart-weakened children had an imbalance in autonomic nervous system due to increase of sympathetic nerve activity and decrease of parasympathetic nerve activity.

Prevalence and Antibiotic Susceptibility of Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococci in Chicken Intestines and Fecal Samples from Healthy Young Children and Intensive Care Unit Patients

  • The prevalence resistance genotype and antibiotic susceptibility of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) were determined. Prevalence of VRE in chickens, healthy children and intensive care unit (ICU) patients was 43.0%, 12.7% and 24.1%, respectively. Forty out of 56 isolates from chicken intestines were identified as Enterococcus faecium, and 12 were E. faecalis. All the isolates contained the vanA gene. Nine out of 13 VRE isolates from patients and two out of 21 from healthy young children were identified as E. faecium. The resistance types of E. faecium, E. gallinarium and E. casseliflavus were VanA, VanCl, and VanC2, respectively. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of E. faecium, E. gallinarium, and E. casseliflavus to vancomycin were 512,8 and 4 g/ml, respectively. Specifically, E. faecium isolates were resistant to most of antibiotics except ampicillin and gentamicin. This is the first report of high VanA type VRE prevalence in nonhospitalized young children in Korea.
