Gamma spectrum denoising method based on improved wavelet threshold

  • Adverse effects in the measured gamma spectrum caused by radioactive statistical fluctuations, gamma ray scattering, and electronic noise can be reduced by energy spectrum denoising. Wavelet threshold denoising can be used to perform multi-scale and multi-resolution analysis on noisy signals with small root mean square errors and high signal-to-noise ratios. However, in traditional wavelet threshold denoising methods, there are signal oscillations in hard threshold denoising and constant deviations in soft threshold denoising. An improved wavelet threshold calculation method and threshold processing function are proposed in this paper. The improved threshold calculation method takes into account the influence of the number of wavelet decomposition layers and reduces the deviation caused by the inaccuracy of the threshold. The improved threshold processing function can be continuously guided, which solves the discontinuity of the traditional hard threshold function, avoids the constant deviation caused by the traditional soft threshold method. The examples show that the proposed method can accurately denoise and preserves the characteristic signals well in the gamma energy spectrum.

국내 폐기물 취급업의 생물학적 인자 노출실태 (A Study on the Biological Hazards Exposure for Waste Handling Industries in Korea)

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the distribution patterns and exposure concentrations of biological hazards in waste handling industries. Methods: We selected 3 recyclable waste sorting plants(RWS), 2 food recycling plants(FR), 1 landfill area(LA) and 1 waste incineration plant(WI). Total airborne bacteria and fungi were measured with single stage impactor and gelatin filters. Endotoxin and glucan were measured with polycarbonate filters in total and respirable dust. Results: The geometric mean of airborne bacterial concentration was the highest in FR($3,273CFU/m^3$), followed by LA, RWS, and WI as 1,334, 934, and $860CFU/m^3$. The fungal concentrations were 6,031, 5,052, 3,307, and $713CFU/m^3$ in RWS, WI, FR, and LA, respectively. By process, WI pit showed the highest concentrations of bacteria, fungi, and endotoxin, followed by inside of bulldozer in LA. The indoor to outdoor ratios of bacteria, fungi, endotoxin and glucan were 2.3, 4.0, 2.3, and 5.0 in RWS, 29.5, 4.9, 7.6, and 5.0 in FR, 5.3, 8.7, 26.8, and 9.5 in WI, respectively. Conclusions: We found that biological hazards, specifically bacteria in FR, fungi in RWS and endotoxin in WI pit and bulldozer at LA, should be controlled to prevent worker's respiratory diseases.

Experimental and numerical study of Persian brick masonry barrel vaults under probable structural hazards

  • Understanding and analysing the behaviour and response of historical structures in the face of climate changes and environmental conditions is of utmost significance for their preservation. There are several structural hazards associated with climate and hydrology changes in the region, including the settlement of piers, the rotation of piers, and temperature changes. The present study investigates the experimental and numerical structural behaviour of skewed and non-skewed Persian brick masonry barrel vaults under various conditions. The external loading conditions included pier rotation in five modes, settlement, and temperature variations in four states. Initially, the experiments extracted the mechanical properties of the scaled materials. Then, three semi-circular brick barrel vaults were tested with gravitational loads. The outcomes were used to develop and validate the finite element model. Following the development of the finite element model, numerical and parametric studies were conducted on the effect of the aforementioned structural hazards on the response of brick masonry barrel vaults with various Persian geometries (semi-circular, drop pointed, and four-centred), angles of skew (0, 15, 30, and 45 degrees), and dimensional ratios. According to the findings, the fragility of masonry materials makes historical structures susceptible to failure under different loading. A brick barrel vault fails in the presence of minor rotation and settlement of the piers. The four-centred geometric shape has the lowest performance among the seven Persian geometries; therefore, its health monitoring and retrofitting should be prioritised. In Isfahan, Iran, temperature variations, particularly during the warm seasons, cause critical conditions in such structures.

상수관로에 대한 시간종속형 공변수를 포함한 포괄적 비례위험모형 (The Comprehensive Proportional Hazards Model Incorporating Time-dependent Covariates for Water Pipes)

  • 본 논문에서는 연구대상 지역의 150 mm 주철 상수관로의 첫 번째 파손으로부터 일곱 번째 파손사건에 대한 비례 위험모형을 구축하였다. 모형의 구축과정에서 공변수의 위험률에 대한 비례위험 가정을 검사하여 이를 위배할 경우 시간종속형 공변수로 모형화하였다. 그 결과 첫 번째 파손에 대해서는 관로의 제원 및 연결 방식과 급수인구가, 그리고 두 번째 파손 사건에 대해서는 급수인구의 영향이 시간에 따라 변하는 것으로 나타났다. 각 생존시간군의 기저위험률에 대한 분석으로부터 첫 번째와 두 번째 파손에 대해서는 대체적으로 파손 위험률이 시간에 따라 계속해서 증가하는 것으로 나타났으며, 세 번째 파손으로부터 일곱번째 파손사건에 대해서는 파손 위험률이 감소하다가 시간이 지나면 증가하는 욕조 모양으로 추정되었다. 또한 시간과 파손횟수에 따른 기저위험률의 변화 및 각 생존시간군의 중간생존시간으로부터 연구대상 상수관로들은 파손횟수가 증가할수록 전반적인 관로의 상태가 악화되는 것으로 판단된다. 추정된 공변수의 회귀계수와 위험비율을 이용하여 관로파손에 미치는 인자와 그 시간적 영향에 대하여 분석하였으며, 구축된 모형의 이탈잔차를 이용하여 모형의 적합도를 검증하였다.

경기-서울-인천지역 구성암류의 지질시대별 분포율 (Areal Distribution Ratio of Rock ffes with Geologic Ages in the Gyeonggi-Seoul-Incheon Areas)

  • ArcGIS 9.0 그리고 1 대 250,000의 수치지질도(한국지질자원연구원)와 수치지형도(국토지리정보원)를 사용하여 경기권역인 경기, 서울 및 인천지역에서 지질시대별 구성암류의 분포율을 각각 추출하였다. 경기지역에서는 합해서 37개의 구성암류가 발달하며 선캠브리아기, 시대미상, 삼첩기, 쥬라기, 백악기 및 제4기로 분류될 수 있다. 이들 중에서 쥬라기의 대보화강암류, 선캠브리아기의 경기편마암복합체내 호상편마암, 제4기의 충적층의 순으로 분포율이 감소한다. 이들은 합해서 83.7% 정도의 분포율을 이루어 경기지역 구성암류의 대부분을 차지한다. 서울지역에서는 합해서 10개의 구성암류가 발달하며 선캠브리아기, 쥬라기 및 제4기로 분류될 수 있다. 이들 중에서 경기편마암복합체내 호상편마암, 대보화강암류 그리고 충적층의 순으로 분포율이 감소한다. 이들은 합해서 95.5% 정도를 이루어 서울지역 분포암층의 거의 대부분을 차지하며, 대보화강암류의 분포율이 경기지역보다 크게 감소한다. 인천지역에서는 합해서 15개의 구성암류가 분포하며 선캠브리아기, 쥬라기, 백악기 및 제4기로 분류될 수 있다. 이들 중에서 충적층, 대보화강암류, 경기편마암복합체내 호상편마암, 매립지 그리고 경기편마암복합체내 편암류의 순으로 분포율이 감소한다. 이들은 합해서 96.2% 정도를 이루어 인천지역 분포암층의 거의 대부분을 이룬다. 충적층의 분포율은 경기 및 서울지역에서보다 상대적으로 크게 증가한다. 매립지 분포율도 크게 증가하며 이는 경기지역에 이어 인천지역의 경기만 해안선을 따라 넓게 발달하는 신도시 등의 산업개발로 인한 매립결과로 해석된다.

Expression Profiles of Loneliness-associated Genes for Survival Prediction in Cancer Patients

  • Influence of loneliness on human survival has been established epidemiologically, but genomic research remains undeveloped. We identified 34 loneliness-associated genes which were statistically significant for high-lonely and low-lonely individuals. With the univariate Cox proportional hazards regression model, we obtained corresponding regression coefficients for loneliness-associated genes fo individual cancer patients. Furthermore, risk scores could be generated with the combination of gene expression level multiplied by corresponding regression coefficients of loneliness-associated genes. We verified that high-risk score cancer patients had shorter mean survival time than their low-risk score counterparts. Then we validated the loneliness-associated gene signature in three independent brain cancer cohorts with Kaplan-Meier survival curves (n=77, 85 and 191), significantly separable by log-rank test with hazard ratios (HR) >1 and p-values <0.0001 (HR=2.94, 3.82, and 1.78). Moreover, we validated the loneliness-associated gene signature in bone cancer (HR=5.10, p-value=4.69e-3), lung cancer (HR=2.86, p-value=4.71e-5), ovarian cancer (HR=1.97, p-value=3.11e-5), and leukemia (HR=2.06, p-value=1.79e-4) cohorts. The last lymphoma cohort proved to have an HR=3.50, p-value=1.15e-7. Loneliness-associated genes had good survival prediction for cancer patients, especially bone cancer patients. Our study provided the first indication that expression of loneliness-associated genes are related to survival time of cancer patients.

Effects of Smoking on Menopausal Age: Results From the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2007 to 2012

  • Objectives: Decreased fertility and impaired health owing to early menopause are significant health issues. Smoking is a modifiable health-related behavior that influences menopausal age. We investigated the effects of smoking-associated characteristics on menopausal age in Korean women. Methods: This study used data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2007 to 2012. Menopausal age in relation to smoking was analyzed as a Kaplan-Meier survival curve for 11 510 women (aged 30 to 65 years). The risk of entering menopause and experiencing early menopause (before age 48) related to smoking were assessed using a Cox proportional hazards model. Results: The menopausal age among smokers was 0.75 years lower than that among non-smokers (p<0.001). The results of the Cox proportional hazards model showed pre-correction and post-correction risk ratios for entering menopause related to smoking of 1.26 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.09 to 1.46) and 1.27 (95% CI, 1.10 to 1.47), respectively, and pre-correction and post-correction risk ratios for experiencing early menopause related to smoking of 1.36 (95% CI, 1.03 to 1.80) and 1.40 (95% CI, 1.05 to 1.85), respectively. Conclusions: Smokers reached menopause earlier than non-smokers, and their risk for experiencing early menopause was higher.

Association with Combined Occupational Hazards Exposure and Risk of Metabolic Syndrome: A Workers' Health Examination Cohort 2012-2021

  • Background: This study aimed to evaluate the association between exposure to occupational hazards and the metabolic syndrome. A secondary objective was to analyze the additive and multiplicative effects of exposure to risk factors. Methods: This retrospective cohort was based on 31,615 health examinees at the Pusan National University Yangsan Hospital in Republic of Korea from 2012-2021. Demographic and behavior-related risk factors were treated as confounding factors, whereas three physical factors, 19 organic solvents and aerosols, and 13 metals and dust were considered occupational risk factors. Time-dependent Cox regression analysis was used to calculate hazard ratios. Results: The risk of metabolic syndrome was significantly higher in night shift workers (hazard ratio = 1.45: 95% confidence interval = 1.36-1.54) and workers who were exposed to noise (1.15:1.07-1.24). Exposure to some other risk factors was also significantly associated with a higher risk of metabolic syndrome. They were dimethylformamide, acetonitrile, trichloroethylene, xylene, styrene, toluene, dichloromethane, copper, antimony, lead, copper, iron, welding fume, and manganese. Among the 28 significant pairs, 19 exhibited both positive additive and multiplicative effects. Conclusions: Exposure to single or combined occupational risk factors may increase the risk of developing metabolic syndrome. Working conditions should be monitored and improved to reduce exposure to occupational hazards and prevent the development of the metabolic syndrome.

판별분석을 이용한 토지이용별 토양 특성 변화 연구 (Use of Discriminant Analysis to Identify Soil Quality Variation by Land Use)

  • 본 연구에서는 회동저수지 상류 수영강 유역에 발달된 토양을 대상으로 지질 및 토지이용별로 토양의 물리화학적 특성을 조사하고 그 영향을 다변량 통계분석법인 주성분 및 판별분석을 이용하여 고찰하였다. 연구지역내 토양의 토성은 안산암에서 발달한 토양이 화강암의 것보다 세립질이며 용출 무기성분, 점토 및 유색광물의 함량도 높았다. 경작지 토양 내 염류 집적(EC, 양이온, 음이온)과 pH증가는 대부분 경작과정에 투입된 비료의 영향에 의한 것이며 임야 토양에 비해 상대적으로 낮은 유기물 농도는 경운에 의한 유기물의 산화 촉진 및 작물 수확에 기인하는 것이다. 토지이용별 무기성분의 함량은 밭>과수원>논>임야 토양 순으로 나타났으며, 논 토양의 높은 $SO_4\;^{2-}$함량은 담수 상태 환원조건하 침전된 황화광물형태가 산화조건의 용출 실험에 의해 용해되어 증가되는 것에 기인한다. 주성분 분석결과는 토지 이용이나 지질에 따른 토양 특성을 잘 나타내었으며, 주성분 1은 시비, 광물 풍화작용 및 질소질 비료에 의한 이온교환 반응의 영향을 나타내었다. 토양 용출 성분과 성분비를 이용한 두 종류의 판별분석결과는 모두 토지이용별로 판별함수 1과 2에 의해 뚜렷하게 구분되며, 토양 성분을 이용한 판별분석에서 판별함수 1은 경작에 의한 비료의 영향을 나타내며 밭, 과수원, 논, 임야 토양 순서로 증가하였다. 판별분석에 의한 토지이용 특성의 조사 및 예측자료는 비교적 잘 일치하였으며 토지 이용의 변화를 확인할 수 있는 방법으로도 사용될 수 있었다.

Analysis of Nested Case-Control Study Designs: Revisiting the Inverse Probability Weighting Method

  • In nested case-control studies, the most common way to make inference under a proportional hazards model is the conditional logistic approach of Thomas (1977). Inclusion probability methods are more efficient than the conditional logistic approach of Thomas; however, the epidemiology research community has not accepted the methods as a replacement of the Thomas' method. This paper promotes the inverse probability weighting method originally proposed by Samuelsen (1997) in combination with an approximate jackknife standard error that can be easily computed using existing software. Simulation studies demonstrate that this approach yields valid type 1 errors and greater powers than the conditional logistic approach in nested case-control designs across various sample sizes and magnitudes of the hazard ratios. A generalization of the method is also made to incorporate additional matching and the stratified Cox model. The proposed method is illustrated with data from a cohort of children with Wilm's tumor to study the association between histological signatures and relapses.
