  • Various nonlinear loads such as diode rectifiers, and phase controlled converters connected to at source cause harmonic pollutions in ac mains. Recently some filters have been proposed to minimize the potential problems. This study describes a method to improve the performances of a voltage source active filter. Two feedback loops are used in the scheme : one for reactive power compensation and the other for harmonic eliminations.

  • Power factor and harmonics are increasingly important for high speed train auxiliary block. This paper presents experimental results of the power factor and harmonic performance of two parallel PWM circuits under various supply and load conditions. For reducing harmonics the harmonic content is eliminated by the phase shift between two converters switching phase. Experimental results show the usefulness of the proposed method and applicability to PWM converter in auxiliary block of high speed train.

  • This paper deals with the dynamic voltage control problem at the inverter end of a HVDC link when connected to a weak AC system which has the potential for harmonic instability and commutation failures. The dynamic voltage control problem is tackled with a STATCOM (Static Compensator), which not only provides a rapid recovery from harmonic instability and commutation failures but also offers a lower cost filter design for HVDC systems. PSCAD/EMTDC simulations are presented to validate the proposed topology and to demonstrate its robust performance.

  • This paper considers the method of elimination harmonics in AC/DC converters, There are few practical methods to reduce the harmonics in AC/DC converters, particularly in filter design and control strategy. In this paper, a harmonic elimination methods are proposed, which includes hybrid PWM control strategy. These methods achieve precise output control along with the optimum performance simultaneously. The control method in this paper is developed to eliminate a fixed number of harmonics in AC to DC converter. The higher order harmonics can be easily eliminated by using filter proposed in this paper. The validity of these methods is confirmed experimentally.

  • In this paper a control technique for active power filters is proposed which not only eliminates the harmonic current, but also controls the reactive power at the ac side of PWM inverter-induction motor drive system. Injecting the proposed PWM current enables the harmonic components of orders not greater than the pulse number per half-cycle to be removed completely. It also enables the input power factor to become unity. Theoretical investigations are performed to evaluate the performance of the proposed control technique.

  • The main drawback of parallel type active power filters (APF) is the large capacity required for harmonic compensation. This paper evaluates the APF capacity requirement of harmonic/reactive power compensation for thyristor converter load. Theoretically achievable maximum power factor under partial load is evaluated. And it is shown that the APF capacity can be considerably reduced while slightly sacrificing the filtering performance by deliberately limiting the peak current of the APF.

A Solid State Controller for Self-Excited Induction Generator for Voltage Regulation, Harmonic Compensation and Load Balancing

  • This paper deals with the performance analysis of static compensator (STATCOM) based voltage regulator for self­excited induction generators (SEIGs) supplying balanced/unbalanced and linear/ non-linear loads. In practice, most of the loads are linear. But the presence of non-linear loads in some applications injects harmonics into the generating system. Because an SEIG is a weak isolated system, these harmonics have a great effect on its performance. Additionally, SEIG's offer poor voltage regulation and require an adjustable reactive power source to maintain a constant terminal voltage under a varying load. A three-phase insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) based current controlled voltage source inverter (CC- VSI) known as STATCOM is used for harmonic elimination. It also provides the required reactive power an SEIG needs to maintain a constant terminal voltage under varying loads. A dynamic model of an SEIG-STATCOM system with the ability to simulate varying loads has been developed using a stationary d-q axes reference frame. This enables us to predict the behavior of the system under transient conditions. The simulated results show that by using a STATCOM based voltage regulator the SEIG terminal voltage can be maintained constant and free from harmonics under linear/non linear and balanced/unbalanced loads.

고차 구성의 개선된 직류 옵셋 제거 필터 (Advanced DC Offset Removal Filter of High-order Configuration)

  • Fault currents are expressed as a combination of harmonic components and exponentially decaying DC offset components, during the occurrence of fault in power system. The DC offset components are included, when the voltage phase angle of fault inception is closer to $0^{\circ}$ or $180^{\circ}$. The digital protection relay should be detected quickly and accurately during the faults, despite of the distortions of relaying signal by these components. It is very important to implement the robust protection algorithm, that is not affected by DC offset and harmonic components, because most relaying algorithms extract the fundamental frequency component from distorted relaying signal. So, In order to high performance in relaying, advanced DC offset removal filter is required. In this paper, a new DC offset removal filter, which is no need to preset a time constant of power system and accurately estimate the DC offset components with one cycle of data, is proposed, and compared with the other filter. In order to verify performance of the filter, we used collecting the current signals after synchronous machine modeling by ATPDraw5.7p4 software. The results of simulation, the proposed DC offset removal filter do not need any prior information, the phase delay and gain error were not occurred.

효율적인 가변차원 하모닉 크기 양자화기법 (Efficient Variable Dimension Quantization of Harmonic Magnitude)

  • 본 논문은 스펙트럴 크기 파라미터들에 대한 효율적인 가변 차원 양자화 기법을 제안한다. 특히, 하모닉 부호화 기에서의 스펙트럴 크기값 계수들은 가변차원이기 때문에 가변 차원의 양자화를 필요로 한다. 따라서, 본 논문에서는 스펙트럴 크기값 계수들에 대해 가변 이산 코사인 변환(DCT: Discrete Cosine Transform) 및 가변 차원에 적합한 훈련구조를 가지는 비정방형 변환 벡터 양자화 (NSTVQ: Nonsquare Transform Vector Quantization)를 홀수/짝수 구조 및 분할(Split) 구조 그리고 다단계(Multi-stage) 구조 등과 결합시킨 효율적인 양자화 기법을 제안한다. 제안된 양자화 기법의 성능평가는 스펙트럴의 크기값에 대한 주파수 왜곡(SD: Spectral Distortion) 값을 사용하였으며, 다단계 비정방형 변환 벡터 양자화(MSNSTVQ: Multi-Stage Nonsquare Transform Vector Quantization)가 가장 좋은 성능을 나타내었다.
