Water extracts were extracted on water bath for 3 hrs at 90${^{\circ}C}$ after 5 times water was added to hot-air dried garlic (DG) and red ginseng (RG), respectively. Its extracts were dried on rotary evaporator, and then the mixture samples were prepared from RG extracts added to DG extracts at 5, 10, and 15%. To test biological activities such as DPPH, nitrite scavenging, tyrosinase, $\alpha$-glucosidase, human gastric (AGS), and human colon cancer cell (HT-29) growth, dryness of DG, RG, and mixture samples were diluted 500-10,000 $\mu$g/mL adding deionized water, respectively. DPPH scavenging activities of mixture sample were slightly higher than DG and RG sample alone. Nitrite scavenging activity was the highest in DG, and the other samples were below 45%. Inhibition activity of tyrosinase was below 35.0% in tested all samples. Inhibition activity of $\alpha$-glucosidase was lower in DG or RG alone, while its activity of mixture sample was increased in proportion to concentration of RG extracts. Inhibition of AGS cell growth was more effective in mixture samples than DG and RG alone, while inhibition of HT-29 cell growth was more effective in DG or RG alone than mixture samples.
The seeds and callus induced from the root of Glycine max were used as test materials. When the seed was treated with the different concentrations of Pinus rigida extract, there was a more striking inhibition of seedling growth than of seed germination. The callus of the control group was in good condition, but when treated with 5% extract there was generalized browning and cell division was decreased in the upper part of the callus. There was no difference in the fresh and dry weights in 2% extract treatment but there was dramatic repression at concentrations higher than 5%. The band activity of peroxidase isozyme in treated callus was elevated, while that of esterase was inhibited.
It was intended to investigate the effect of the microbiological kitchen hygiene such as dishclothes and scrubbers. The 8indicator organisms (standard plate counts, coliform, heterotroph, enterococcus, staphylococcus, heat-stable bacteria, psychrotroph, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) were detected highly in dishwaters, dishcloth and scrubber. Coliform and Staphylococcus aureus were appeared on dishcloth dominantly than the scrubber, and the scrubbers were intruded by hetrotrophs and psychrotrophs numerously than dishclothes. The germ-resistant sponge inhibited the growth of the most of test strain, and appeared the about 100% reduction rate after 24 hr, but did not affect Pseudomonas aeruginosa and P. fragi so typically after 24 hr. The anti-microorganism durability of germ-resistant sponge, treated with food soil, was maintained by 10 days, the early stage strain density was founded in 20 days, and the strains grew after 30 days.
The bacterial strain that was isolated from chinese cabbage rhizosphere, showed inhibition of yeast growth. This strain was identified as Pseudomonas fluorescens BB2 by API 20NE test and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. P. fluorescens BB2 strain produced antibiotics against yeast as a secondary metabolite effectively when the culture was carried out in YM medium with 3% glucose at $20^{\circ}C$. The protein antibiotic of BB2 strain which was concentrated by ammonium sulfate precipitation and n-butanol extraction inhibited the growth of yeast with the minimal inhibitory concentration of $10{\mu}g/ml$ against Candida albicans KCTC 7965, and the growth of yeast was completely inhibited at $80{\mu}g/ml$. The hydrophilic fraction of n-butanol extraction inhibited the growth of Bacillus cereus ATCC 21366, showed orange halo on chrome azurol S plate, which means the fraction contained iron chelating siderophore. The results of crystal violet uptake through the cell membrane showed that membrane permeability was increased about 9% than control, when the concentration of hydrophobic antibiotic against yeast C. albicans was $60{\mu}g/ml$. As a result, the antibiotic produced by P. fluorescens BB2 against yeast Candida is considered antimicrobial peptide, and this is the first report in the genus Pseudomonas.

The quantification of the toxicological effects of the heavy metals such as Cu, Cd, Cr, Hg, and Zn on the growth of Escherichia coli was performed, and the variations of toxicwith exposure time were evaluated in adaptation procedure. The characteristics of growth inhibition on Escherichia coli by heavy metals were different with metal species, and critical concentration of each metal, which inhibited cell growth completely, were Cu of 3.5 mM, Zn of 2.5 mM, Cd of 1.5 mM, Cr of 1.2 mM, and Hg of 0.12 mM, respectively. The tolerance of E. coli against heavy metals, based on $EC_{50}$ values, increased in order of Cu > Zn > Cr > Cd > Hg. The slopes obtained from the relationship between ECso values and expose time corresponds to adaptability of test organisms to the toxicants. The adaptability of test organisms to the toxicants was much higher at higher slope values. Adaptability of E. coli on heavy metals increased in order to Zn > Cd > CU >> Cr> Hg.
This study was performed to investigate the influence of dietary mulberry leaf on the intestinal microflora in rats. Rats were fed each experimental diets containing 1%, 10% of mulberry leaf powder for 4 weeks. Total viable counts and the numbers of Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, Clostridium, E. coli and Staphylococcus were determined by nonselective media and various selective media. A decrease in the intestinal population of Clostridium was shown in dietary mulberry leaf group. The E. coli and Staphylococcus populations decreased in dietary mulberry leaf group compared with control group. Methanol extract and fractions of mulberry leaf were subjected to an in vitro screening test for their growth-inhibitory activity. Methanol extract and Water fraction of Mulberry leaves showed weak growth-inhibition of Clostridium perfringens. These results indicate that the composition of gastrointestinal microflora was improved by treatment of mulberry leaves in SD rats and was very effective for growth inhibition of the intestinal harmful bacteria in intestine. Therefore, the mulberry leaves as a newly bio-material can be a useful material for physiologically functional food.

Essential oils of 21 herb plant samples, using spectrophotometric and paper disc agar diffusion methods under anaerobic conditions, were tested in vitro for their growth-inhibiting activities against Bifidobacterium bifidum, B. longum, Lactobacillus casei, Clostridium perfringens, and Escherichia coli. The responses varied with bacterial strains and plant oils. At 10 mg/disk, all essential oils did not inhibit beneficial intestinal bacteria, except for the oil of Alpinia officinarum and Melaleuca alternifolia against L. casei. Due to their strong growth-inhibitory activities against C. perfringens, E. coli, and L. casei, the activites of nine oils were evaluated at low concentrations. In test with C. perfringens at 1 mg/disk, the oils of Amyris balsamifera, Curcuma longa, M. alternifolia, and Trachyspermum ammi showed moderate activities. Moderate activities against E. coli were observed with the oils of M. alternifolia and T. ammi. These results may be indications of at least one of the pharmacological actions of the four herb plants.
ALA (5-aminolevulinic acid) has been proposed as a tetrapyrrole-dependent photodynamic herbicide by the action of the protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase (Protox IX). A study was conducted to determine photodynamic herbicidal effect of ALA on seedling growth of rice (Oryza sativa L.) and barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli Beauv. var. oryzicola Ohwi) under dry and wet conditions. ALA effect on early plant growth of rice and barnyardgrass was greatly concentration dependant, suggesting that it promotes plant growth at very low concentration and inhibits at high concentration. No significant difference in herbicidal activity of biologically and synthetically produced ALAs on plant lengths of test plants was observed ALA exhibited significant photodynamic activity regardless of PSDIP and its duration. Significant shoot growth inhibition by ALA soaking treatment exhibited apparently, indicating that ALA absorbed through root system was translocated into shoot part of plants. ALA reduced plant heights of rice and barnyardgrass seedlings by 6% and 27%, respectively, showing more tolerant to ALA in rice under wet condition. Leaf thickness was reduced markedly by ALA with increasing of ALA concentration, due to mainly membrane destruction and severe loss of turgidity in mesophyll cells, although the epidermal was little affected. It was observed that photodynamic herbicidal activity of ALA applied by pre-and post-emergence application exhibited differently on plant species, and that the activity of ALA against susceptible plants was highly correlated with growing condition.

Ixeris dentata was extracted with methanol and then the methanol extract was further fractionated to hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, butanol and aqueous fraction. The methanol extract of lxeris dentata had the strong antimutagenic effect on the aflatoxin B1(AFB1) and N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine(MNNG) in Ames mutagenicity test and SOS chromotest. Among the solvent extracted fractions from the methanol extract, the chloroform fraction exhibited the greatest antimutagenic effect suppressing the mutagenicity of AFB1 with inhibition rate of 74 percent. The methanol extract of Ixeris dentata also revealed the inhibitory effect on the growth of MG-63 human osteosarcoma cells after 6 days of breeding at 37℃. The chloroform fraction and the ethyl acetate fraction from the methanol extract of lxeris dentata were most effective and inhibited the growth of MG-63 cells by 97 and 93 percent, respectively. It is suggested that the inhibitory effects of lxeris dentata on the mutagenicity and the growth of MG-63 human osteosarcoma cells are strong in the lipid soluble fractions.

This study investigated the effect of high concentration of free ammonia on microalgal growth and substrate removal by applying real wastewater nitrogen ratio. To test of this, the conditions of free ammonia 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 mg-N/L are compared. After 3 days of incubation, algal growth of Chlorella vulgaris and carbon removal rate are respectively lower in the reactors of FA 12, 15 mg-N/L compared to the others. This indicates that the high concentration of free ammonia, in this case, above 12 mg-N/L, has negative effect on algal growth and metabolic activity. Also, high concentration of free ammonia causes the proton imbalance, ammonium accumulation in algae and has toxicity for these reasons. So, we have to consider free ammonia in applying the microalgae to wastewater treatment system by the way of diluting wastewater or controlling pH and temperature.
