  • On the basis of data obtained from 5 forest roads(Backyang, Byongatae, Saorang, Bukyu and Dangrim forest road) collapsed under a heavy rainfall in Chunchon, Kangwondo, this study was carried out to predict the cutting slope failure of forest road by using Quantification theory(II). The results were summarized as follows; The cutting slope failure was chiefly occurred by correlated action of road structure, vegetation and topographical factors. The cutting slope failure predicted by partial correlation coefficients and range values was characterized by longer than 8m of cutting slope length, depper than 2.5m of soil depth, between $30^{\circ}$ and $50^{\circ}$ of original ground slope gradient, absence of vegetation coverage on cutting slope, and greater than $60^{\circ}$ of cutting slope gradient. And the rate of correct discrimination by analysis of cutting slope failure was 90.1%.

  • Non-point pollution is caused by many diffusive sources, unlike a point pollution derived from industrial wastewater treatment plants or sewage treatment plants. Runoff of non-point pollutants is originated from rainfall or thawing in short period of time moving over and through the a ground surface. They cause ill effect on the quality of neighboring aquatic environment. To prevent effectively the wash off from non-point pollutant, it should be immediately reduced at the source or be treated after gathering of runoff water. This study has been carried out for the best width of riparian buffer zone. So we implemented the experiment in terms of its depth, width and kind of vegetations and calculated the reduction of pollutants loading. The experimental zone encompasses the watershed of Namhan River (Kyunggido Yangpyunggun Byungsanri). The region was divided into 5 land cover sectors : grass, reed, pussy willow, mixed(grass+pussy willow) and natural zone to compare effectiveness of vegetation. Water samples from four points have been collected in different depths. And the pollutant removal efficiency by sectors with different plant species was yielded through influent with one of each sample. And we obtained the correlation between the width of riparian buffer zone and the removal efficiency of pollutants. Using correlation result, the width of riparian buffer zones which needs to improve the water quality of river could be derived.

  • Drought indices such as SPI(Standard Precipitation Index) and PDSI(Palmer Drought Severity Index) estimated using ground observations are not enough to describe detail spatial distribution of drought condition. In this study, the drought index with improved spatial resolution was estimated by using the CART algorithm and ancillary data such as MODIS NDVI, MODIS LST, land cover, rainfall, average air temperature, SPI, and PDSI data. Estimated drought index using the proposed approach for the year 2008 demonstrates better spatial information than that of traditional approaches. Results show that the availability of satellite imageries and various associated data allows us to get improved spatial drought information using a data mining technique and ancillary data and get better understanding of drought condition and prediction.

  • In earthwork projects, the designer considers cut and fill balance for minimizing earthwork which may significantly decrease construction costs. Despite carrying out considerable earthwork design, the decrease in volume of earth occurs in construction sites because of embankment settlement under self-weight, consolidation settlement of soft ground, cavity filling and soil loss due to rainfall-runoff. To reflect the decrease in volume of earth, the specifications for road construction just give shrinkage factors in embankment for soils without consideration of embankment settlement under self-weight. In this study, the computational method is used to estimate the amount of embankment settlement under self-weight developed by Iseda (1972) and Ishii (1976). This research shows that the total compression settlements are between 3 to 10 percent of embankment height according to the property of embankment material and embankment height. As a result, the designer should consider the compression settlement on embankment material under selt-weight.

  • Recently, geosynthetic reinforced earth walls are gradually replacing conventional concrete retaining walls for reasons of economy, expediency of construction, and aesthetics. A number of reinforced soil walls having more than 10m heights have been constructed to make more effective development in the country. However, mistakes in design and construction of reinforced earth walls have resulted in many troubles such as failure of reinforced earth walls, horizontal deformationor breakdown of facings, and so forth during or after construction. In this paper, a case study on global sliding failure of a geogrid-reinforced tiered wall is carried out to investigate the causes of the failure and suggest the proper countermeasures. From the subsurface investigation and field instrumentation, It is found that the cause of the global sliding failure was occurred by decreasing of bearing capacity of foundation ground induced by infiltration of rainwater.

  • The major objective of this study is to develop practical methods for estimating sediment yield rates of medium size watersheds of which areas range from 200 to $2,000km^2$. For this purpose, this study adopts an empirical method of statistical approach and another empirical method of weighting the watershed characteristics factors. A total of 13 data points for sediment yield rate, including five data points from reservoir deposit data and eight data points from sampled river-sediment data have been collected. Meanwhile, seven factors that may affect the sediment yield rate of a watershed have been selected. They are drainage density, rainfall erosivity, ground cover and land use, soil erodibility, topography, river-bed material characteristics, and watershed area. In the companion paper following this paper, methods for estimating sediment yield rate are to be developed using the 13 data points collected and seven watershed characteristics factors selected in this study.

  • This study investigates the effect of the mixing elements on the pressure loss and mixing performance in line mixer. The high density ozone water devices mixed with gas and liquid are used in various fields such as sterilizing of group feeding facilities and water quality management at a fish farm. Due to the decrease in rainfall due to climate change, pasteurization of drinking water from ground water and surface water is extremely important. Therefore, it is intended to develop a line-mixed gas liquid mixer with a small amount of space. In this study, the effects of the number of static mixers and the types and the number of the orifice used in line mixer on the volume fraction and the pressure loss were studied by CFD simulation. The pressure drops of line mixer with orifice which curved vanes were attached to were down to more than 50 percent of that of line mixer with static mixer whereas the mixing performance of the former was similar to that of the latter.

  • A water balance analysis was performed for a paddy field neighboring the Dongchang stream, downstream of the Unmun reservoir, which is constructed for the urban water supply. Daily rainfall data were collected and irrigation water flow rate, drainage flow rate, evaportranspiration, infiltration, and piezometeric head were measured in the field. The flow rates were continuously observed by water level logger during the growing season. The evaportranspiration and the infiltration were measured by N-type depletion meter and cylindrical infiltrometer, respectively. PVC pipes with 12mm diameter were used for piezometric head measurement. Total Irrigation and drainage flows were 3,608mm and 1,170mm in 1999, and 3,971mm and 1,548mm in 2000, respectively. The mean and range of the daily infiltration rate were 4.4mm/d and 3.4mm/d to 5.5mm/d in 1999 and 5.1mm/d and 4.1mm/d to 6.5mm/d in 2000, respectively. The net ground water flow including the change of soil water storage was 2,855mm in 1999 and 2,540mm in 2000. The evapotranspiration was 458.3mm in 1999 and 553.5mm in 2000. The range of daily evapotranspiration rate was from 1.6 to 8.7mm/d. The return flow ratio was about 32% in 1999 and 39% in 2000 and three year average was 35% including previous study in 1997. The amount of irrigation water was much higher than design standards or references in this study, This was caused by the inadequate water management practice in the area where water was oversupplied on farmers’ request rather than following sound water management principles.

  • To alter the paddy field to upland, mole drainages were constructed under 30cm of the surface of(Jeon buk silt loam) which is not appropriate for cultivation of upland crops. Intervals of the moles were 50cm, 100cm and 150cm and diverted to upland for soybean cultivation. By construction of the mole drainage, about 75% to 45% of the rainfall was drained and the ground water level was maintained below 40cm. After a year of drainage, the blocky surface was changed to granular or nutty structure which is common in upland fields. Oxidation was progressed to the deep layer because of soil dryness. Soybean yield were increased by 11% to 22% in the mole drained plots, but wet injury was occurred in the nontreated check plot with relatively poor growth status.
