In order to make reliable earthquake-resistant design of civil engineering structures, one of the most important considerations in a region with high seismicity is to pay attention to the local soil condition of regions. It is aimed in the current study at specifying dynamic soil characteristics of Kirikkale city center conducting the 1-D equivalent linear and non-linear site response analyses. Due to high vulnerability and seismicity of the city center of Kirikkale surrounded by active many faults, such as the North Anatolian Fault (NAF), the city of Kirikkale is classified as highly earthquake-prone city. The first effort to determine critical site response parameter is to perform the seismic hazard analyses of the region through the earthquake record catalogues. The moment magnitude of the city center is obtained as $M_w=7.0$ according to the recorded probability of exceedance of 10% in the last 50 years. Using the data from site tests, the 1-D equivalent linear (EL) and nonlinear site response analyses (NL) are performed with respect to the shear modulus reduction and damping ratio models proposed in literature. The important engineering parameters of the amplification ratio, predominant site period, peak ground acceleration (PGA) and spectral acceleration values are predicted. Except for the periods between the period of T=0.2-1.0 s, the results from the NL are obtained to be similar to the EL results. Lower spectral acceleration values are estimated in the locations of the city where the higher amplification ratio is attained or vice-versa. Construction of high-rise buildings with modal periods higher than T=1.0 s are obtained to be suitable for the city of Kirikkale. The buildings at the city center are recommended to be assessed with street survey rapid structural evaluation methods so as to mitigate seismic damages. The obtained contour maps in this study are estimated to be effective for visually characterizing the city in terms of the considered parameters.

Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) have gained experience with Helicopter Vibration Health Monitoring (VHM) System technology with the help of UK GKN-WHL. GKN-WHL have had many years of experience with the research and development of vibration analysis techniques to improve the health monitoring of helicopter transmissions. This activity was targeted at transmission rig testing at first, but the techniques have been progressively developed where they are now used as a part of integrated Health and Usage Monitoring (HUM) systems on many types of in-service and new helicopters. The technique development process has been considerably aided by an ever expanding database of transmission monitoring experience from both the rig testing and aircraft operations. This experience covers a wide range of failure types from naturally occurring faults to crack propagation studies and covering a wide range of transmission configurations. Primarily based on accelerometer signals GKN-WHL's vibration analysis methods have also been applied to a variety of other sensor types. The transition from an experimental environment to operational VHM systems has been a lengthy process, there being a need to demonstrate technique reliability as well as effectiveness to both regulatory (Airworthiness Authority) and commercial organizations. Another important feature of this process has been the development of close relationships with a number of VHM system hardware and software suppliers. Such an experienced GKN-WHL provides various raw vibration data which was acquired from transmission ground test rig and allow KARI to develop it's own analysis program. KARI made a program and then analyzed the data to coma pre with the results of GKN-WHL. The KARI's results both time domain signals and statistical values show comparable to GKN's.
The aim of this study is to investigate the reliability of strong motion records processed by causal and acausal Butterworth filters in comparison to the results obtained from a synthetic accelerogram. For this purpose, the fault parallel component of the Bolu record of the Duzce earthquake is modeled with a sum of exponentially damped sinusoidal components. Noise-free velocities and displacements are then obtained by analytically integrating the synthetic acceleration model. The analytical velocity and displacement signals are used as a standard with which to judge the validity of the signals obtained by filtering with causal and acausal filters and numerically integrating the acceleration model. The results show that the acausal filters are clearly preferable to the causal filters due to the fact that the response spectra obtained from the acausal filters match the spectra obtained from the simulated accelerogram better than that obtained by causal filters. The response spectra are independent from the order of the filters and from the method of integration (whether analytical integration after a spline fit to the synthetic accelerogram or the trapezoidal rule). The response spectra are sensitive to the chosen corner frequency of both the causal and the acausal filters and also to the inclusion of the pads. Accurate prediction of the static residual displacement (SRD) is very important for structures traversing faults in the near-fault regions. The greatest adverse effect of the high pass filters is their removal of the SRD. However, the noise-free displacements obtained by double integrating the synthetic accelerogram analytically preserve the SRD. It is thus apparent that conventional high pass filters should not be used for processing near-fault strong-motion records although they can be reliably used for far-fault records if applied acausally. The ground motion parameters such as ARIAS intensity, HUSID plots, Housner spectral intensity and the duration of strong-motion are found to be insensitive to the causality of filters.

Grouting is frequently used before the construction of subsea tunnels to mitigate problems that can occur in weak ground zones such as joints, faults or unconsolidated settlements during construction. The grout material injected into rock mass often flows through the discontinuities present in the host rock and hence, joint properties such as its distribution, roughness and thickness greatly affect the properties of grouting-improved rocks. The grouting-improved zones near subsea tunnels are also subjected to high water pressures that can cause long-term weathering in the form of changes in grout microstructure and crack formation and lead to subsequent changes in ground properties. Therefore, an assessment method is needed to accurately measure changes in the grouting-improved zones near subsea tunnels. In this study, the elastic wave propagation characteristics in grouting-improved rocks were tested for various axial stress levels, curing time, joint roughness and thickness conditions under laboratory conditions and the results were compared with wave velocity standards in different Korean rock mass classification systems to provide a basis for inferring improvement in grouted rock-mass.

Line to ground faults by deterioration of insulators has frequently occurred in power system, and the main cause is surface contamination of the insulators. The contamination of insulator is analyzed by monitoring the surface leakage current flowing them. The suspension insulator is monitored by installation of a zero-phase current sensor(ZCT), but the line-post insulator is impossible to apply the same method because of its large diameter structure. This paper proposed a detection method of surface leakage current for a line-post insulator, and it can easily be applied to new and/or built insulators. The leakage current is indirectly calculated from the potential difference between the metal electrode attached on the surface of insulator and the ground connector. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, the leakage current is compared as a function of contamination condition controlled by the density of NaCl solution. The leakage current is proportioned to the density of NaCl solution, and the voltage detected by the electrode showed the same trend. From the experimental results, we designed and fabricated a monitoring device which is composed of a detection electrode, signal converter, microprocessor, and ZigBee, and its measurement range is $10{\mu}A{\sim}5mA$.
In general, blast vibrations could make underground cavern unstable by causing relative movements between the surrounding rock blocks that are divided by discontinuities such as joints and faults around the cavern. In the study, a blast guideline was established to obtain the stability of a large-scale cavern for underground crusher room in an open pit limestone mine in Korea. The guideline was suggested in the form of a standard calculation method of the maximum charge per delay for a safe blast. The allowable level of peak particle velocity for the cavern was determined based on the result of a numerical analysis using FLAC2D. The ground vibration data required for the study was obtained from field measurements.

During and shortly after the 2017 Pohang Earthquake ($M_w$ 5.4), sand blows were observed around the epicenter for the first time since the beginning of instrumental seismic recording in South Korea. We carried out field surveys plus satellite and drone imagery analyses, resulting in observation of approximately 600 sand blows on Quaternary sediment cover in this area. Most were observed within 3 km of the epicenter, with the farthest being 15 km away. In order to investigate the ground's susceptibility to liquefaction, we conducted a trench study of a 30 m-long sand blow in a rice field 1 km from the earthquake epicenter. The physical characteristics of the liquified sediments (grain size, impermeable barriers, saturation, and low overburden pressure) closely matched the optimum ground conditions for liquefaction. Additionally, we found a series of soft sediment deformation structures (SSDSs) within the trench walls, such as load structures and water-escaped structures. The latter were vertically connected to sand blows on the surface, reflecting seismogenic liquefaction involving subsurface deformation during sand blow formation. This genetic linkage suggests that SSDS research would be useful for identifying prehistoric damage-inducing earthquakes ($M_w$ > 5.0) in South Korea because SSDSs have a lower formation threshold and higher preservational potential than geomorphic markers formed by surface ruptures. Thus, future combined studies of Quaternary surface faults and SSDSs are required to provide reliable paleoseismological information in Korea.
The main cause of cable accidents is the accelerated deterioration of the cable itself or internal and external electrical, mechanical, chemical, thermal, moisture intrusion, etc., which reduces insulation performance and causes insulation breakdown, leading to cable accidents. Insulation deterioration can occur even when there is no change in the appearance of the cable, so there is a difficulty in preventing cable accidents due to insulation deterioration. Since cable accidents can occur in areas with poor insulation due to the effects of overvoltage and overcurrent, it is necessary to comprehensively analyze transformers and circuit breakers, and ground faults caused by phase-to-phase imbalance. Ground fault accidents due to insulation breakdown of cables can occur due to defects in the cable itself and poor cable construction, as well as operational influences, arcs during operation of electrical equipment (switchers, circuit breakers, etc.). analysis is needed. This study intends to examine the causes of cable accidents through analysis of cable accidents that occurred in a manufacturing factory.

Geotechnical risk factors encountered in intermediate-depth underground tunnel construction are diverse, and the types and standards of risk factors are different according to the depth and regional geological characteristics of Korea. In order to understand the effects of geological characteristics and geologic structure on safety, which show various porous characteristics of urban underground complex ground, the risk factors of intermediate-depth rock mass in Korea were analyzed based on domestic and foreign cases. As a result of the study, seven categories affecting the stability of the intermediate-depth tunneling, namely, geologic structure, rock characteristics, hydrogeology, overburden, high stress, ground characteristics and artificial structures, and about 22 risk factors were derived. We present the risk criteria and interval values for risk evaluation of faults, folds, dikes, and rocks that have the greatest influence among risk factors. Criteria and interval values for other risk factors are under study.

A method for estimating the instantaneous phasor of a fault current signal is proposed for high-speed distance protection that is immune to a DC-offset. The method uses a modified notch filter in order to eliminate the power frequency component from the fault current signal. Since the output of the modified notch filter is the delayed DC-offset, delay compensation results in the same waveform as the original DC-offset. Subtracting the obtained DC-offset from the fault current signal yields a sinusoidal waveform, which becomes the real part of the instantaneous phasor. The imaginary part of the instantaneous phasor is based on the first difference of the fault current signal. Since a DC-offset also appears in the first difference, the DC-offset is removed trom the first difference using the results of the delay compensation. The performance of the proposed method was evaluated for a-phase to ground faults on a 345kV 100km overhead transmission line. The Electromagnetic Transient Program was utilized to generate fault current signals for different fault locations and fault inception angles. The performance evaluation showed that the proposed method can estimate the instantaneous phasor of a fault current signal with high speed and high accuracy.
