  • The experimental characterization of hydrodynamic bearing spindle motor is performed for the practical implementation of high-performance hard disk drive system. Firstly, the design concept of hydrodynamic bearing for the disk drive system is addressed including the herringbone grooved journal bearing, the spiral grooved thrust bearing, capillary seal design, and the viscous pumping of fluid. Secondly, the experimental evaluation is performed for the disk drive system in which the hydrodynamic bearing spindle motor is implemented and its dynamic performances are compared with conventional ball-bearing spindle motor. The key parameters include NRRO(Non Repeatable Run-Out), disk dynamics, acoustics, and resultant PES (Position Error Signal). Finally, the external gyro-exciting test results including 200k CSS(Continuous Start-Stop) on three angular attitudes(0,90, 180 degree) are presented in order to verify the practical reliability of disk drive system subject to the gyro-motion of hydrodynamic bearing spindle motor.

  • This study investigated the condensation heat transfer coefficients of R-22, R-290 and R-600a inside horizontal tube. Heat transfer measurements were performed for smooth tube with inside diameter of 10.07 mm and outside diameter of 12.07 mm and inner grooved tube having 75 fins whose height is 0.25 mm. Condensation temperatures and mass velocity were ranged from 308K to 323 K and $51kg/m^2s$ to $250kg/m^2s$, respectively. The test results showed that the local condensation heat transfer coefficients increased as the mass flux increased, and also the effects of mass velocity on heat transfer coefficients of R-290 and R-600a were less than those of R-22. Average condensation heat transfer coefficients of natural refrigerants were superior to that of R-22. The present results had a good agreement with Cavallini-Zecchin's correlation for smooth and inner grooved tubes.

  • This research numerically analyzes the dynamic characteristics of a coupled journal and thrust hydrodynamic bearing due to its groove location which has the static load due to the weight of a rotor in the axial direction and the dynamic load due to its mass unbalance in the radial direction. The Reynolds equation is transformed to solve a plain member rotating type of journal bearing(PMRJ), a grooved member rotating type of journal bearing (GMRJ), a plain member rotating type of thrust bearing (PMRT) and a grooved member rotating type of thrust bearing (GMRT). FEM is used to solve the Reynolds equations in order to calculate the pressure distribution in a fluid film. Reaction forces and friction torque are obtained by integrating the pressure and shear stress along the fluid film, respectively. Dynamic behaviors, such as whirl radius or floating height of a rotor, are determined by solving its nonlinear equations of motion with the Runge-Kutta method. This research shows that the groove location affects the pressure distribution in the fluid film and consequently the dynamic performance of a HDD spindle system.

  • In case of manufacturing the high quality welds or pipeline, the full penetration weld has to be made along the weld joint. Thus the root pass welding is very important and has to be selected carefully. In this study, an experimental method for the selection of optimal welding condition was proposed in the root pass welding which was done along the V-grooved butt weld joint. This method uses the response surface analysis in which the width and height of back bead were chosen as the quality variables of the weld. The overall desirability function, which is the combined desirability function for the two quality variables, was used as the objective function for getting the optimal welding condition. In the experiments, the target values of the back bead width and the height are 6mm and zero respectively for the V-grooved butt weld joint of 8mm thickness mild steel. The optimal welding conditions could predict the back bead profile(bead width and height) as 6.003mm and -0.003mm. From a series of welding test, it was revealed that a uniform and full penetration weld bead can be obtained by adopting the optimal welding condition which was determined according to the method proposed.

  • This paper presents an analytical method to Investigate the stability of a hydrodynamic journal bearing with rotating herringbone grooves. The dynamic coefficients of the hydrodynamic journal bearing are calculated using the FEM and the perturbation method. The linear equations of motion can be represented as a parametrically excited system because the dynamic coefficients have time-varying components due to the rotating grooves, even in the steady state. Their solution can be assumed as a Fourier series expansion so that the equations of motion can be rewritten as simultaneous algebraic equations with respect to the Fourier coefficients. Then, stability can be determined by solving Hill's infinite determinant of these algebraic equations. The validity of this research is proved by the comparison of the stability chart with the time response of the whirl radius obtained from the equations of motion. This research shows that the instability of the hydrodynamic journal bearing with rotating herringbone grooves increases with increasing eccentricity and with decreasing groove number, which play the major roles in increasing the average and variation of stiffness coefficients, respectively. It also shows that a high rotational speed is another source of instability by increasing the stiffness coefficients without changing the damping coefficients.

  • The thermal performance of a flat-strip heat pipe with inner grooves and the screen mesh cover was investigated experimentally. The heat pipes were made of 2024 aluminum alloy of which the dimensions were 30 (W) $\times$ 4 (T) $\times$ 150 (L) mm. The cross sectional dimensions of inner groove were 0.4$\times$0.9 mm and the space between grooves was 0.6 mm. To enhance the capillary force, foe screen meshes were attached to cover the grooved inner surface. In the grooved heat pipes without screen mesh cover, the maximum thermal load of 180 W (12 W/$cm^2$) was achieved for operating temperature below $130^{\circ}C$ at horizontal position. The heat pipes with screen mesh cover showed the thermal resistances less than one third of those without screen mesh cover, and showed less fluctuation in the thermal resistance values. Furthermore, the thermal performance of the former exhibited less dependence on the tilt angle and the fill charge ratio.

  • This study concerns the performance of boiling heat transfer in two-phase closed thermosyphons with various helical grooves. Distilled water, methanol, ethanol have been used as the working fluids. In the present work, a copper tube of the length of 1200 mm and 14.28 mm of inside diameter is used as the container of the thermosyphon. Each of the evaporator and the condenser section has a length of 550 mm, while the remaining part of the thermosyphon tube is adiabatic section. A experimental study was carried out for analyzing the Performances of having 50, 60, 70, 80 and 50 helical grooves. A Plain thermosyphon having the same inner and outer diameter as the grooved thermosyphons is also tested for comparison. The type of working fluid and the numbers of grooves of the thermosyphons with various helical grooves have been used as the experimental parameters. The experimental results have been assessed and compared with existing theories. The results show that the number of grooves and the type of working fluids are very important factors for the operation of thermosyphons. The helical grooved thermosyphons having 50 to 60 grooves in water, 60 to 70 grooves in methanol and ethanol shows the best heat boiling heat transfer coefficient.

  • The heat transfer enhancement by pulsatile flow in a triangular grooved channel has been experimentally investigated in this study The experiment was performed in the ranges of the Reynolds number from 270 to 910, the pulsatile fraction from 0.125 to 0.75, and the Strouhal number from 0.084 to 0.665. It was measured that the heat transfer improves up to 350% compared with the steady flow case at Re=270,$\eta=0.5$, and St=0.335. The heat transfer enhancement was found to increase as the pulsatile fraction increases and the Reynolds number decreases. It was also found that the heat transfer enhancement is maximized at a specific pulsatile frequency satisfying the resonant condition. The nondimensional frequency, i.e., the Strouhal number at the resonant condition was found to increase as the Reynolds number decreases. The flow visualization revealed that the heat transfer enhancement results from the strong mixing caused by the repeating sequence of vortex formation, rotation and subsequent ejection from the grooves by the pulsatile flow.

  • Surface texturing is a machining process on the surface to give engineering functions. The representative process of the surface texturing is lotus effect to give hydrophobic property by the lithography and chemical etching, which is the bio mimic from the nature. Surface texturing can be manufactured by a lot of processes, in particular using mechanical method such as a precise diamond turning, grinding, rolling, embossing, vibrorolling, and abrasive jet machining (AJM). Among them, the grinding process is notable in terms of the wide range of texturing area and fast processing time. The patterning by grinding is done by the grooved grinding wheel on the work piece. In this case, the pattern shape is determined by the grinding conditions as well as the wheel dressing conditions. In this paper, experimental study on the pattern shapes were done and provide the feasibility in use for the large area patterning.

  • Background: Steam generator (SG) is one of the significant components in the nuclear steam supply system. A variety of SGs have been designed and used in nuclear reactor systems. Every SG has advantages and disadvantages. A brief account of some of the existing SG designs is presented in this study. A high surface to volume ratio of a SG is required in small modular reactors to occupy the least space. In this paper, performance improvement for SGs of integral small modular reactor is proposed. Aims/Methods: For this purpose, cross-grooved microfins have been incorporated on the inner surface of the helical tube to enhance heat transfer. The primary objective of this work is to investigate thermal-hydraulic behavior of the proposed improvements through modeling in RELAP5-3D. Results and Conclusions: The results are compared with helical-coiled SGs being used in IRIS (International Reactor Innovative and Secure). The results show that the tube length reduces up to 11.56% keeping thermal and hydraulic conditions fixed. In the case of fixed size, the steam outlet temperature increases from 590.1 K to 597.0 K and the capability of power transfer from primary to secondary also increases. However, these advantages are associated with some extra pressure drop, which has to be compensated.
