  • This study was carried out to establish a production system of cut flowers and bulbs of oriental hybrid lilies in highland in summer. In study, effect of cultivation type and shading was examined. The cultivation types used in the bulb production experiments were greenhouses with no cover, greenhouses with net screen (net screen house), and greenhouses with EVA roof cover and net screen sides (rain shelter house). Net screen and rain shelter houses had either 0 or 30% shading. Cultivation type had significant effect and shading had a minor effect on bulb production. The greatest yield and quality of produced bulbs were obtained in the rain shelter house with 30% shading. From the results of this study, it is concluded that dispersed production of high quality cut lily flowers and bulbs could be achieved during the summer in highland.

  • As the weather changes become frequent, weather disasters are increasing, causing more damage to plastic greenhouses. Among the damage caused by various disasters, damage by snow to the greenhouse takes a relatively long time, so if an alarm system is properly prepared, the damage can be reduced. Existing greenhouse design standards and snow warning systems are based on snow depth. However, even in the same depth, the load on the greenhouse varies depending on meteorological characteristics and snow density. Therefore, this study aims to secure the structural safety of greenhouses by developing sensors that can directly measure snow loads, and analysing the warning criteria for load using a stochastic model. Markov chain was applied to estimate the failure probability of various types of greenhouses in various regions, which let users actively cope with heavy snowfall by selecting an appropriate time to respond. Although it was hard to predict the precise snow depth or amounts, it could successfully assess the risk of structures by directly detecting the snow load using the developed sensor.

  • The calculation method of infiltration loss in greenhouse has different ideas in each design standard, so there is a big difference in each method according to the size of greenhouses, it is necessary to establish a more accurate method that can be applied to the domestic. In order to provide basic data for the formulation of the calculation method of greenhouse heating load, we measured the infiltration rates using the tracer gas method in plastic greenhouses equipped with various thermal curtains. And then the calculation methods of infiltration loss in greenhouses were reviewed. Infiltration rates of the multi-span and single-span greenhouses were measured in the range of $0.042{\sim}0.245h^{-1}$ and $0.056{\sim}0.336h^{-1}$ respectively, single-span greenhouses appeared to be slightly larger. Infiltration rate of the greenhouse has been shown to significantly decrease depending on the number of thermal curtain layers without separation of single-span and multi-span. As the temperature differences between indoor and outdoor increase, the infiltration rates tended to increase. In the range of low wind speed during the experiments, changes of infiltration rate according to the outdoor wind speed could not find a consistent trend. Infiltration rates for the greenhouse heating design need to present the values at the appropriate temperature difference between indoor and outdoor. The change in the infiltration rate according to the wind speed does not need to be considered because the maximum heating load is calculated at a low wind speed range. However the correction factors to increase slightly the maximum heating load including the overall heat transfer coefficient should be applied at the strong wind regions. After reviewing the calculation method of infiltration loss, a method of using the infiltration heat transfer coefficient and the greenhouse covering area was found to have a problem, a method of using the infiltration rate and the greenhouse volume was determined to be reasonable.

  • Two dominant thrips in hot pepper (Capsicum annuum) cultivating in greenhouses are Frankliniella occidentalis and F. intonsa in Korea. This study investigated their overwintering physiology. These two thrips were freeze-susceptible and suppressed the body freezing temperature by lowering supercooling point (SCP) down to -15~-27℃. However, these SCPs varied among species and developmental stages. SCPs of F. occidentalis were -25.7±0.5℃ for adults, -17.2±0.3℃ for pupae, and -15.0±0.4℃ for larvae. SCPs of F. intonsa were -24.0±1.0℃ for adults, -27.0±0.5℃ for pupae, -17.2±0.8℃ for larvae. Cold injuries of both species occurred at low temperature treatments above SCPs. Thrips mortality increased as the treatment temperature decreased and its exposure period increased. F. occidentalis exhibited higher cold tolerance than F. intonsa. In both species, adults were more cold-tolerant than larvae. Two thrips species exhibited a rapid cold hardening because a pre-exposure to 0℃ for 2 h significantly enhanced the cold tolerance to a lethal cold temperature treatment at -10℃ for 2 h. In addition, a sequential exposure of the thrips to decreasing temperatures made them to be acclimated to low temperatures. To investigate the overwintering sites of the two species, winter monitoring of the thrips was performed at the greenhouses. During winter season (November~February), adults of the two species were not captured in outside of the greenhouses. However, F. occidentalis adults were captured to the traps and observed in weeds within the greenhouses. F. occidentalis adults were also emerged from soil samples obtained from the greenhouses during the winter season. F. intonsa adults did not come out from the soil samples at November and December, but emerged from the soil samples obtained after January. To determine the adult emergence due to diapause development, two thrips species were reared under different photoperiods. Adult development occurred in all photoperiod treatments in F. occidentalis, but did not in F. intonsa especially under short periods. Tomato spotted wilt virus, which is transmitted by these two species, was detected in the weeds infested by the thrips during the winter season. These results suggest that F. occidentalis develops on weeds in the greenhouses while F. intonsa undergoes a diapause in the soil during winter.

  • Unusual mushrooms were observed in the greenhouses of vegetables Chinese chive, cucumber, melon and Korean dandelion in four locations of Korea in 2012. The mushrooms usually grew with the vegetables cultivated on beds in the greenhouses. Occurrence aspects of the mushrooms in the greenhouses and effect of the mushrooms on growth and quality of the vegetables were investigated. Mushroom samples were collected from the beds in the greenhouses and identified based on their morphological characteristics. The mushroom samples collected from the greenhouse of Chinese chive were identified as Coprinus aokii, those from the greenhouse of cucumber as Cristinia eichleri and Coprinus sp., those from the greenhouse of melon as Leucocoprinus cretaceous, Panaeolus fimicola and Conocybe sp., and those from the greenhouse of Korean dandelion as Conocybe rickenii f. tetrasporique. Out of the seven mushrooms identified, L. cretaceus, C. rickenii and C. eichleri were first found in Korea. The investigation results revealed that the mushrooms were originated from compost or soil used in the beds, and showed that C. aokii caused sooty mold on leaves of Chinese chive, and C. rickenii f. tetrasporique hindered growth of Korean dandelion and caused sooty mold on leaves of the plant. The other mushrooms had no effect on growth and quality of the vegetables.

  • A series of experiments were carried out in winter to investigate the indoor thermal environment in greenhouses with different kinds of heating systems, and characterize the energy consumption, heat transport and thermal energy efficiency of each system. By the Quantitative calculation of heat losses which transmit through the covers of greenhouse, the fundamental data of energy-saving of the particular heating system were obtained. And from the analysis of air temperature differences between indoor and outside, it was possible to select more effective energy-saving and comfortable heating system in greenhouses. The electric heater was more stable in thermal environment and cheaper in cost, since it could be used during the surplus time of electric power from 10:00 p.M. to 8:00 A.M. But the low air temperature in greenhouses besides these times resulted in a chilling problem of the crops. The heating system by hot air had the advantage to show nearly uniform temperature difference by the height above the ground. But the system had the disadvantage to require more energy consumption than the electric heating system.

  • In this paper, the thermal characteristics in plastic greenhouses with heating systems of electric power, hot air, and non-heating are measured and analyzed by field tests. From these tests, we were able to estimate the heating efficiency and quantitatively evaluate the characteristics of indoor thermal distributions of the particular heating system in greenhouses. The heating system of electric power was ineffective to reduce the difference of thermal distribution in the vertical direction. The hot air heating system also does not properly reduce the serious temperature fluctuation by time. By removing the above problems, these data will be utilized effectively to design better thermal environment in greenhouses.

  • This study was conducted to provide data necessary for clearing up the way to be able to improve covering and management method of covering material in commercial plastic greenhouse. The photosynthetic photon flux(PPF) in representative 4 different commercial tomato greenhouses was measured and analyzed. The variation trend of daily integral PPF was in agreement with that of the duration of sunshine. Each of daily integral PPF for 4 different experimental greenhouses was quite dissimilar, and was less than the amount of PPF necessary to grow tomato. October to November of beginning of winter was a good season to replace covering material in order to secure more PPF during insufficient winter season in greenhouse. The main inside factors to interrupt PPF incidence were thermal screen, inside covering material, condensation receiver in greenhouse. The single wide span greenhouse covered with PO film was superior to the other experimental greenhouses in the aspect of PPF transmittance.

  • This study was performed to find an efficient method to overcome extremely high temperature in greenhouses during summer season. The actual utilization of greenhouses during hot summer season showed that about 21.6% of the investigated greenhouse farms were in fallow state, and most of greenhouse farms were cultivated under the very inferior environment. Thermal environment of greenhouses according to the evaporative cooling method and several assistant cooling methods such as ventilation, shading screen, roof sprinkling were examined. As the each assistant cooling method was used, about 74.8%, 25.9%, and 58.2% of temperatures measured at intervals of ten minutes between ten and seventeen o'clock were above 35$^{\circ}C$. When shading screen and evaporative cooling system were operated, most greenhouse air temperatures were maintained below 35$^{\circ}C$, and showed a drop of 3.8~4.2$^{\circ}C$ as compared with naturally ventilated greenhouse.

  • Contamination level and characteristics of Ralstonia solanacearum in soil of greenhouses cultivating tomato plants in Chungbuk province was determined. R. solanacearum was isolated with the semiselective media in 27 greenhouse soil samples out of 133 greenhouses soil investigated, which indicates 20.3 % of tomato cultivating greenhouses in Chungbuk contaminated with the bacterial wilt pathogen. Density of R. solanacearum was estimated to 10$^{2.4}$ cfu/g in the contaminated soil. All 71 isolates of R. solanacearum which containing 12 isolates from the diseased tomato plants were race 1, ann 35 isolates of them were biovar 3 and 36 isolates were biovar 4. More than 88% of 71 isolates were inhibited growth on nutrient agar containing oxolinic acid 0.5 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml, streptomycin 25 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml, tetracycline 5 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml and cupric sulfate 375 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml (1.5 mM). The 11.3%, 4.2% and 5.6 % of the isolates can grow on nutrient agar containing 10 times more oxolinic acid, streptomycin, tetracycline than minimal inhibitory concentration of the sensitive strains. Five isolates were resistant to 2 bactericides and one isolates was resistant to all 3 bactericides.
