Studies on Genetic Variation of Soluble Solids, Acidity and Carotenoid Contents in Tomato Fruits from Germplasm (국내외에서 수집된 토마토에서 당도, 산도, 카로티노이드 색소의 유전변이에 관한 연구)

  • Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum M.) is one of the most important crops to the fresh vegetable market and the food processing industry. To evaluate genetic variation in tomato fruits, major characteristics such as soluble solids, acidity and carotenoid contents were analyzed for 771 genetic resource lines. Lines in red color was about 85% which is the largest one followed by peach color, yellow, green, orange, and black. The sweetness of juice ranged from 2.2 to 11.5% (in brix), the average being 5.6%. The acidity ranged from 0.124% to 1.665%, and the average was 0.881%. The lycopine contents was up to 80.4 ${\mu}g/g$, and 43.4 ${\mu}g/g$ in average. ${\beta}$-carotine ranged 1.8 to 48.8 ${\mu}g/g$ and it average was 10.8 ${\mu}g/g$. Statistical analysis indicates that there is coefficient of correlation between acidity and sweetness, acidity and pH, pH and lycopine, lycopine and ${\beta}$-carotine. It is expected that the result of this study can be used for breeding more competitive species with respect to contents in sugar or functional chemicals from the selected characteristic species.

  • 1950-1960 년대의 녹색혁명은 1970년 Nobel 평화상수 상자 Norman Borlaug가 주도했었다. 제1 녹색혁명은 지구상의 가장 큰 문제점중의 하나인 기아를 해결하는지 크게 일조하였다. 많은 사람들을 굶주림으로부터 해방시켰지만 굶주리는 사람보다 더 많은 사람들이 매일 태어나고 있고, 지구의 인구증가는 지금까지 계속되고 있다. 언제까지 인구증가가 계속될 것인지, 인구증가에 따른 식량자원의 증가도 비례할 것인지는 오래전부터 인류의 관심의 대상이 되어 왔고, 자연스럽게 지구의 기아를 해결하는 제2의 녹색혁명은 과학자들의 연구를 집중시키는 결과를 낳게 되었다. 1980 년대에 미국 Monsanto 회사에서 유전공학적으로 개발한 Roundup-Ready 제초제저항성 및 Bt-살충 농작물을 선보이면서 제2의 녹색혁명이 시작되었다고 볼 수 있겠다. 이렇게 제2의 녹색혁명은 유전공학에 의한 CMO 식물$\cdot$작물에 의해 시작되었다. Monsanto 회사는 살충제 RoundUp 제초제 저항성 옥수수, 콩, 목화, Canola (유채꽃, rape seed) 등을 개발하여 이미 상업화하였다. 1960년대 쌀의 녹색혁명도 유전적으로 벼집이 짧은 품종에 의해 이루어졌다. 최근에 개발된 GMO "Golden Rice"는 비타민 A와 철분의 함량을 대폭 증대 시켜 세계 영양결핍 아동들의 건강과 시각을 향상시킬 것으로 기대되는데, "Golden Rice"는 제1회 금호국제과학상 수상자인 Potrykus (스위스공대) 교수가 개발하였다. 그러나 현재까지는 그 보급에 많은 장애물이 있다. 특히 GMO의 환경과 건강에 대한 안전성을 의심하는 사람들이 많다. 제2의 녹색혁명의 또 다른 분야는 식물의약 분야이다. GMO 개발에 적용되는 기술을 이용하면 taxol 같은 항암제, carotene 같은 항산화 영양제 등의 대량 생산이 가능해진다. 식물은 화학적 합성이 아주 까다로운 약제물질 등을 천연상태에서 합성하고 있기 때문이다. 또 식물은 lipoxygenase 효소계가 있어서 마치 천연물 석유제조공장과 같은 제조공정 capacity를 가지고 있다. 그러면 식물/식품 GMO는 안전한 것인가? 아니, KBS의 한 사회자가 말했듯이, 그리고 많은 소비자들이 믿는 것처럼 GMO는 위험한가? GMO에 대한 일반 사람들의 공포감은 Green Peace 당원들뿐만 아니라 일부 과학자들에 의해서도 조장되고 있다. 이러한 분위기 속에서 GMO에 의한 제2 녹색혁명은 Africa 대륙에서의 제1 녹색혁명이 지금도 지연되는 것과 같다고도 볼 수 있다. GMO의 환경에 대한 악영향은 과대 선전되어있는 것이 아닌가? 마치 GMO가 화학비료, 농약제보다 더 위험하다고 믿는 사람들도 많다. 나는 이러한 GMO 공포증이 과학적으로 그리고 "Risk Assessment"의 견지에서 볼 때 그 근거가 희박하다고 보여주는 몇 몇 실험 및 경험 사실들을 인용하려 한다. 그리고 올바른 Risk Assessment야 말로 한국의 21세기 BT 산업을 경쟁력 있게 하고 국민 년 소득 2만불 달성에 중요한 기여를 하게 될 것이라고 생각한다. 한국은 농토가 적고 천연자원이 빈약하다. GMO는 21세기의 생존 경쟁 산업이다. 제2의 녹색혁명은 얼마든지 가능하며, 한국은 부족한 농토와 빈약한 자원에도 불구하고 능력 있는 인적자원이 풍부하여 GMO 개발 연구에 국제적 경쟁력을 키울 수 있다. 그러나 GMO에 대한 논쟁만 하고 있으면 이미 때가 늦는다. 미국은 이미 GMO-BT 시장을 거의 완전 독점했으며, 타국에서의 논쟁과 불합리적으로 엄격한 GMO 관련 규정을 조장하고 환영한다.

Stand Growth Analysis and Carbon Storage/Removals Assesment using the Data of Forest Growth Monitoring Plots (고정조사구 자료를 이용한 임분생장 해석 및 탄소흡수${\cdot}$저장량 평가)

  • This study looked into the change of tree growth of seven forest growth monitoring plots which were set up at the Undulyeong Hongchungun Kangwondo, and was accomplished to offer the basic data for the forest administration calculating carbon storage and removal in the Undulyeong area. Annual height and DBH growth were slowly progressed in the Pinus koraiensis and Larix kaempferi stand which was young stand, but the growth rate of the other stands was lower than those young stand. The diameter class of the mixed forest and Qurcus mongilica stand was predicted to be similar to the now and Pinus koraiensis and Larix kaempferi stand was predicted to move now diameter class to the high diameter class because thickening growth speed of the those stands were rapid. Now the end of 2003, total carbon storage of the Undulyeong model forest increased 149,000TC$(2.7\%)$ compared with the previous year. Seeing by forest types, occupied broad-leaved forest$(50\%)$, mixed forest$(34\%)$ and coniferous forest. During in 2003, total carbon which was removed and stored according to growth of the forest was 156,813TC and net carbon removal(148,664TC) increased into 2,613TC$(1.8\%)$ compared with the previous year. Seeing by forest types, occupied coniferous forest$(3.3\%)$, mixed forest$(3.1\%)$, broad-leaved forest$(2.8\%)$. Resultingly, the Undulyeong model forest is acting to net removal resource when see as green-gas side and net carbon removal are showing the tendency to increase recently little by little.

Bacterial and fungal community composition across the soil depth profiles in a fallow field

  • Background: Soil microorganisms play key roles in nutrient cycling and are distributed throughout the soil profile. Currently, there is little information about the characteristics of the microbial communities along the soil depth because most studies focus on microorganisms inhabiting the soil surface. To better understand the functions and composition of microbial communities and the biogeochemical factors that shape them at different soil depths, we analyzed microbial activities and bacterial and fungal community composition in soils up to a 120 cm depth at a fallow field located in central Korea. To examine the vertical difference of microbial activities and community composition, ${\beta}$-1,4-glucosidase, cellobiohydrolase, ${\beta}$-1,4-xylosidase, ${\beta}$-1,4-N-acetylglucosaminidase, and acid phosphatase activities were analyzed and barcoded pyrosequencing of 16S rRNA genes (bacteria) and internal transcribed spacer region (fungi) was conducted. Results: The activity of all the soil enzymes analyzed, along with soil C concentration, declined with soil depth. For example, acid phosphatase activity was $125.9({\pm}5.7({\pm}1SE))$, $30.9({\pm}0.9)$, $15.7({\pm}0.6)$, $6.7({\pm}0.9)$, and $3.3({\pm}0.3)nmol\;g^{-1}\;h^{-1}$ at 0-15, 15-30, 30-60, 60-90, and 90-120 cm soil depths, respectively. Among the bacterial groups, the abundance of Proteobacteria (38.5, 23.2, 23.3, 26.1, and 17.5% at 0-15, 15-30, 30-60, 60-90, and 90-120 cm soil depths, respectively) and Firmicutes (12.8, 11.3, 8.6, 4.3, and 0.4% at 0-15, 15-30, 30-60, 60-90, and 90-120 cm soil depths, respectively) decreased with soil depth. On the other hand, the abundance of Ascomycota (51.2, 48.6, 65.7, 46.1, and 45.7% at 15, 30, 60, 90, and 120 cm depths, respectively), a dominant fungal group at this site, showed no clear trend along the soil profile. Conclusions: Our results show that soil C availability can determine soil enzyme activity at different soil depths and that bacterial communities have a clear trend along the soil depth at this study site. These metagenomics studies, along with other studies on microbial functions, are expected to enhance our understanding on the complexity of soil microbial communities and their relationship with biogeochemical factors.

  • The Very Large Marine Structure has been widely used new method of ocean space instead of method for reclamation Therefore, VLFS is proposed to coincide on such request. It can be established regardless of nature of soil and height of water, and stream of flow exists under the floating structure, there is seldom effect in natural environment. Fuertherrnore, it can do easily to do assembly and taking to pieces due to expansion or removal. Based on the regulation by class, VLFS have to possess more than enough structural strength against severe wave loading induced by green sea condition Therefore, There are performed structural simulation as well as experimental test about expected loading scenario in order to examine the safety of structure. Up to now, various examinations based on the strength limit value of the main structural material have been done based on the elasticity response analysis. However, there is little finding about the collapse behavior and the safety when the load that exceeds the collapse of the material acts. In the present study, we investigated the collapse behavior based on the ultimate limit state calculated by FE-analysis.

On the Use of Modal Derivatives for Reduced Order Modeling of a Geometrically Nonlinear Beam (모드 미분을 이용한 기하비선형 보의 축소 모델)

  • The structures, which are made up with the huge number of degrees-of-freedom and the assembly of substructures, have a great complexity. In order to increase the computational efficiency, the analysis models have to be simplified. Many substructuring techniques have been developed to simplify large-scale engineering problems. The techniques are very powerful for solving nonlinear problems which require many iterative calculations. In this paper, a modal derivatives-based model order reduction method, which is able to capture the stretching-bending coupling behavior in geometrically nonlinear systems, is adopted and investigated for its performance evaluation. The quadratic terms in nonlinear beam theory, such as Green-Lagrange strains, can be explained by the modal derivatives. They can be obtained by taking the modal directional derivatives of eigenmodes and form the second order terms of modal reduction basis. The method proposed is then applied to a co-rotational finite element formulation that is well-suited for geometrically nonlinear problems. Numerical results reveal that the end-shortening effect is very important, in which a conventional modal reduction method does not work unless the full model is used. It is demonstrated that the modal derivative approach yields the best compromised result and is very promising for substructuring large-scale geometrically nonlinear problems.

The Examination of the Validity of a Vertically Upward Shifting of the Landscape Control Point(LCP) for the Management of Cities Mountain Landscape (시가지내 산악경관관리를 위한 조망점의 수직상향 동의 검증)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop effective destination management strategies for three typical tourist destinations in Kangwon province based on the importance-performance analysis. The results show that overall performance levels of 21 management attributes in three destinations is relatively low, compared to the importance levels of the attributes. 6 attributes place in Concentrate Here, 4 attributes in Possible Overkill, 6 attributes in Keep Up Good Work, and 5 attributes in Low Priority. There is no significant difference in the importance level among three destinations, while performance levels are the lowest at Naksan & Kyungpo beaches, and highest at Ganhyun area. Findings of the survey expect to be used as fundamentals in management policy making process for each destinations.

A Study on Characteristics of Green Companies and Environment Rule Violation Companies (ISO14001인증 녹색기업과 환경위반 기업의 특성 연구)

  • In this research I investigate different firm characteristics between environment-friendly companies which are awarded by the Government and companies which violate environmental regulations. I set up three hypotheses in terms of managers' environmental attitude and firms' characteristic in technical, financial and structural aspects, considering environmental experts' opinions and findings of previous papers. Main research findings are as follows. First, both acquisition of the ISO 14001 certificate and ownership structure are used as proxy of top management attitude towards environmental decision-making. It is hypothesized that it is found that the certificates of ISO 14001 is a good proxy to represent top management environmental attitude and a firm with the certificate would have less likelihood of violation. Second, it is hypothesized that technical ability affects violation tendency of environmental regulations. It is found that as R&D investment increases, violation likelihood of environmetal regulations decrease. It can be conjectured that R&D investment may improve technical abilities of observing environment regulations. Third, it is investigated whether a firm's financial capability affects violation tendency of environmental regulations. Fourth structural aspects of a firm such as capital intensity, the number of employees and export ratio are investigated. It is found that a firm with more employees per sale amount tends to violate environmental regulations. It is not found any effects of expert ratio nor capital intensity on violation tendency of environmental regulation.

Effect of Choi-cha on Fermentation Characteristics and Sensory Quality of Chungkookjang (Korean Fermented Soybean) (초의차 첨가가 청국장의 발효특성과 관능적 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • Physiological, sensory and microbiological evaluations were conducted during fermentation of Chungkookjang. with Choi-cha (non-fermented green tea) powder in efforts to improve the sensory quality of Chungkookjang. Growth of fermentative microorganisms in Chungkookjang was inhibited by Choi-cha; the pH and VBN value decreased as the concentration of Choi-cha increased. Brightness (L) and redness (a) of Chungkookjang fermented with Choi-cha were significantly decreased, resulting in the appearance of all samples fermented with Choi-cha being less attractive than was the control. The sensory quality of Chungkookjang was significantly increased when Choi-cha was added up to 3%, (w/v), and off-odor was reduced. The antioxidative property of Chungkookjang fermented with 3% (w/v) Choi-cha was significantly higher than that of the control. This result indicated that the sensory quality of Chungkookjang was improved by fermentation with 3% (w/v) of Choi-cha powder.

Effects of Pre-treated Sub-ingredients and Deodorization Materials on the Kimchi Smell during Fermentation (전처리된 김치 부재료와 냄새 흡수 물질이 발효중 김치냄새에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of pre-treated sub-ingredients and deodorization materials on the smell intensity of Kimchi during fermentation.Among the various sub-ingredients of Kimchi, garlic, ginger and green onion have comparatively strong smell. The smell intensities of the sub-ingredients, which were pre-treated with various patented methods were examined using the sensory evaluation method and AromaScan. The results showed that the good methods to reduce the smell of sub-ingredients were hot air drying and soaking with heating treatment. The pH, titratable acidity and the number of microorganism of Kimchi prepared with pre-treated sub-ingredients were not different among samples during fermentation. The smell intensity of the Kimchi with pre-treated sub-ingredients was weaker than that of control until ten fermentation days, but the smell intensity after 10 days of fermentation was not different among samples. The addition of ${\alpha}-cyclodextrin\;and\;{\beta}-cyclodextrin$, which are known to have deodorization effect, at a level of 0.1% respectively, to Kimchi resulted in no difference in the pH, titratable acidity and smell intensity during fermentation at $10^{\circ}C$ compared to those of control Kimchi. However, the addition of deodorizer reduced sulfide classes such as methyl allyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide, allyl sulfide, methyl propyl disulfide up to 50%.
