During 1997 and 1998, a new disease of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) was observed on greenhouse-grown plants in Kwangju and Kwangmyung. Lesions on leaves were irregular, small, pale green to black, water-soaked, and 2 to 5 mm in diameter, Coalescing lesions sometimes caused defoliation of older leaves. Isolations made from diseased leaves on yeast extract dextrose calcium carbonate agar yielded nearly pure cultures of a yellow pigmented bacterium typical of a xanthomonad. Two bacterial strains (SL0246 and SL1352) were purified and used for further tests. Pathogenicity of strains was confirmed on 5-week-old lettuce plants injected with bacterial suspensions containing $10^8$ cfu/ml of phosphate buffered saline. The representative Xanthomonas strains isolated from lettuce were compared with a reference strain X. campestris pv, vitians for fatty acid profiles and metabolic fingerprints using GN2 microplate, showing that all outcomes were indistinguishable between the representative and reference strains. This is the first report of bacterial leaf spot and dry rot of lettuce in Korea.
In the past several years phytoremediation, defined as the use of plants for removing contaminants from media such as soils or water, has attracted a great deal of interest as a potentially useful remediation technology We attempted to assess the effectiveness of phytoremediation of diesel-contaminated soils in a green house. Screening test for selecting an appropriate plant was performed by observing the harmful effects of diesel dosage on the growth of 4 plants. Alfalfa was selected as a potentially useful plant among corn and barnyard grasses due to its high tolerance to the toxicity of diesel in growth. Bioremediation of the artificial diesel-contaminated soil packed in the PVC columns(0.3m in diameter $\times$ 1m in length) with air supplied, alfalfa planted, and alfalfa and air supplied was investigated for 100 days. The results of the column test showed plant effects on enhancing the biodegradation of diesel in the contaminated soils compared to the control column which had no plant. Injecting air to the columns during phytoremediation also showed additional effects on the removal rate of diesel. Comparison of microbial activity in each test column showed a beneficial effect of plants in the soil remediation processes. This results can be explained microbial activity in rhizosphere is a crucial factor for removing diesel.
Recently, the green spaces in the urban areas were greatly reduced due to urbanization and industrialization. As urban structures such as roads and buildings are built, the amount of impervious area within a watershed increases. High impervious surfaces are the common causes of high runoff volumes as the soil infiltration capacity decreases and the volume and rate of runoff increase thereby decreasing the groundwater recharge. These effects are causing many environmental problems, such as floods and droughts, climate change, heat island phenomenon, drying streams, etc. Most cities attempted to reduce sewer overflows by separating combined sewers, expanding treatment capacity or storage within the sewer system, or by replacing broken or decaying pipes. However, these practices can be enormously expensive than combined sewer overflows. Therefore, in order to improve these practices, alternative methods should be undertaken. A new approach termed as "Low Impact Development (LID)" technology is currently applied in developed countries around the world. The purpose of this study was to effectively manage runoff by adopting the LID techniques. Small Constructed Wetland(Horizontal Subsurface Flow, HSSF) Pilot-scale reactors were made in which monitoring and experiments were performed to investigate the efficiency of the system in removing pollutants from runoff. Based on the results of the Pilot-plant experiments, TSS, $COD_{Cr}$, TN, TP, Total Pb removal efficiency were 95, 82, 35, 91 and 57%, respectively. Most of the pollutants were reduced after passing the settling tank and the vertical filter media. The results of this study can contribute to the conservation of aquatic ecosystems and restoration of natural water cycle in the urban areas.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of Sorbus commixta Hedl. fruit extracts on the lipid metabolism in rats. Experimental groups were divided into 3 groups; Sprague-dawley rats were fed either diets containing 1% of water extracts(WE group), 1% methanol extracts(MeOH group) and diets without extracts(Control group) during 4 weeks. Food intake, weight gain and liver weight were not shown in meaning full difference among the groups. The concentration of serum triglyceride and total cholesterol were significantly decreased in WE and MeOH group compared to control group. Serum HDL-cholesterol, phospholipids and glucose contents were slightly lower in WE and MeOH group than control group. The levels of liver triglyceride was significantly decreased in MeOH group compared to control group. The levels of total cholesterol and phospholipids in liver were significantly lower in WE and MeOH group than control group.

The hull dehydration in dough stage did not serious affect the rice yield though grain appearance texture may decline by severe occurrence of the symptom. As to white head in heading stage of rice, the occurrence of hull dehydration in 1998 was directly affected by high temperature, low air humidity and sometimes of strong wind and sunshine in early September. At harvest stage, 1,000-grain weight of brown rice was not found to be significantly different between the hull dehydrated grains and normal ones. That reason can be considered that the hull dehydration occurred hill was not injured on the leaf and rachis branches therefore the function of assimilation and translation of rice plant was not affected. The ratio of imperfect rice kernel such as green, cracked and white belly increased. The increase of cracked rice by the hull dehydration may caused by concurrent dehydration of kernel, or by insufficient water supply into kernel due to breaking of vascular bundles in glume.

Effects of temperature and relative humidity on fat soluble vitamin contents in two commercial vitamin tablets ('Multivitamin Dandelion' and 'vitamin E Yarrow') were investigated. When they stored at different temperature (25, 35, and $45^{\circ}C$) with cap and stored at low relative humidity (11% RH) without cap, all fat soluble vitamins (vitamin A acetate, vitamin E acetate and vitamin E) were stable during 24 weeks of storage period. However, when they stored at high relative humidity (75% RH and 100% RH) without cap, vitamin A acetate and vitamin E acetate dramatically disintegrated at the early stage of storage. On the other hand, vitamin E gradually decreased during storage. Therefore, stability of some fat soluble vitamins, which exist as acetate form, was highly dependent on relative humidity rather than storage temperature. Water may act as a plasticizer and increased the mobility of molecules in vitamin tablet resulting in relatively fast disintegration of some fat soluble vitamins.
The multi-storied Daewonsa stone pagoda (Treasure No. 1112) in the Sancheong, Korea was studied on the basis of deterioration and geological safety diagnosis. The stone pagoda is composed mainly of granitic gneiss, partly fine-grained granitic gneiss, leucocratic gneiss, biotite granite and ceramics. Each rock of the pagoda is highly exfoliated and fractured along the edges. Some fractures in the main body and roof stones are treated by cement mortar. This pagoda is strongly covered with yellowish to reddish brown tarnish due to the amorphous precipitates of iron hydroxides. Dark grey crust by manganese hydroxides occur Partly, and some Part coated with white grey gypsum and calcite aggregates from the reaction of cement mortar and rain. As the main body, roof and upper part of the pagoda, the rocks are developed into the radial and linear cracks. Surface of this pagoda shows partly yellowish brown, blue and green patchs because of contamination by algae, lichen, moss and bracken. Besides, wall-rocks of the Daewonsa temple and rock aggregates in the Daewonsa valley are changed reddish brown color with the same as those of the pagoda color. It suggests that the rocks around the Daewonsa temple are highly in iron and manganese concentrations compared with the normal granitic gneiss which color change is natural phenomena owing to the oxidation reaction by rain or surface water with rocks. Therefore, for the attenuation of secondary contamination, whitening and reddishness, the possible conservation treatments are needed. Consisting rocks of the pagoda would be epoxy to reinforce the fracture systems for the structural stability on the basements.
This study was conducted to obtain basic information for soil improvement in flower crop cultivating greenhouse soil through survey on the chemical and physical properties of greenhouse soils. Total of 85 Flowcultivating farms were surveyed and analysis was done on the soil characteristics, amounts of chemical fertilizer and soil amendmentuse. The result are as follows: In soil properties of flower cultivating greenhousees, silt clay loam was 51%and 68% of the surveyed soils had good drainage condition. Ground water table was over 90-120cm which was optimum range for flower cultivation. Flower cultivating farms had problem with accumulation of fertility. Nitrate nitrogen was accumulated in Gypsophila paniculate farms and available phosphorus, and exchangeable postassium were significantly higher in greenhouse soils about 2 times than in open field soil. Application amount of chemical feltilizers in greenhouses were nitrate 211,phosphorus 135, and potassium 132kg/ha, respectively. Amount of organic matter used in greenhouse were high in order of cattle manure> compost> organic fertilizer> poultry manure> swine manure and their application amounts were69, 103, 32, 20, and 43 MT/ha, respectively.

BACKGROUND: An analytical method was developed using GC-ECD/MS to precisely determine the residue of fipronil, a phenylpyrazole insecticide used to control a wide range of foliar and soil-borne pests.METHOD AND RESULTS: Fipronil residue was extracted with acetone from representative samples of five raw products which comprised hulled rice, soybean, Kimchi cabbage, green pepper, and apple. The extract was diluted with saline water, and fipronil was partitioned into n-hexane/dichloromethane (20/80, v/v) to remove polar co-extractives in the aqueous phase. Florisil column chromatography was additionally employed for final purification of the extract. Fipronil was separated and quantitated by GC-ECD using a DB-17 capillary column. Accuracy of the proposed method was validated by the recovery from crop samples fortified with fipronil at 3 levels per crop in each triplication.CONCLUSION: Mean recoveries ranged from 86.6% to 106.0% in five representative agricultural commodities. The coefficients of variation were less than 10%. Limit of quantitation of fipronil was 0.004 mg/kg as verified by the recovery experiment. A confirmatory technique using GC/MS with selected-ion monitoring was also provided to clearly identify the suspected residue. Therefore, this analytical method was reproducible and sensitive enough to determine the residue of fipronil in agricultural commodities.

The purpose of this study was to select herbaceous plants that can be used for presenting various views and biodiversity on the extensive rooftop greening. Experiment plots were constructed in July 2005 on the rooftop of the Administration Building in the Seoul Women's University. For this experiment, planters were used to design rooftop greening. The size of a planter is 500mm${\times}$500mm${\times}$100mm and each planter has the water storage plate in the lower part of it. The soil was constructed by mixing pearlite, vermiculite, cocopeat, and leaf mold in the ratio of 6 : 2 : 1 : 1. The plot was divided into the watered plot and the dry plot. Since each plot was constructed 2 times, finally 4 planters were constructed in total. One hundred species were used for the experiment and 9 plants per species were planted in each planter. Plants were organized according to types of plants and the experiment used 86 native herbaceous plants, 6 herbs, and 8 foreign plants. The plots were monitored once a month, from July to November 2005. The length and width of plants were tape-measured and covering rate was calculated by CAD program. "SPSS 10.1" was used for a statistical analysis. The result showed no significant difference between the watered plots and the dry plots. In cases of some plants, there were statistically significant differences between the watered planter and dry planter such as follows : Astilbe chinensis and Polygonatum odoratum which are shade plants were measured as the highest value on the watered pots, and Aquilegia buergeriana, Chrysanthemum zawadskii, Calendula arvensis and Gypsophila cerastioides D.Don which are sunny plants were measured as the highest value on the dry plots. According to the final analysis of the data collected and observed for growth condition during the first year of the research, 51 species including Prunella vulgaris var. lilacina and Veronica linaiaefolia in native herbaceous plant, 5 species with Lavandula angustifolia in herbs, and 3 species with Lantana camara and Muscari armeniacum in foreign plants showed the highest growth condition. In conclusion, it is suggested that various plants including sedums could be effectively used for extensive rooftop greening to improve landscape(a view) of the rooftop and increase ecological values.
