  • Sixteen hundred fruits were randomly collected from 16 kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa) orchards in Jeonnam, Gyeongnam and Jejn provinces in Korea in 2000 and incidences of postharvest fruit rots were examined. The overall disease incidence was 32% and varied much with locations of orchards ranging from 5 to 68%. The percentages of kiwifruits showing internal, external, and both internal and external symptoms were 21.9%, 4.9%, and 5.2%, respectively. Several fungi were isolated from rotten fruits; Botryosphaeria dothidea, Diaporthe actinidiae and Botrytis cinerea were the major pathogens with the average isolation rates of 83.3%, 11.9% and 1.4%, respectively. Based on the symptoms on kiwifruits and the characteristics, the postharvest fruit rots caused by B. dothidea and D. actinidiae are suggested to be named as ripe rots and stem-end rots, respectively.

  • The effects of developed grape bags on the micro-climate changes of bag, physiological disorder, pathogenic decay, quality and harvest time evaluation in 'Campbell Early' grapevines were studied. The temperature and light transmittance of developed grape bags showed no differences compared with the onces of conventional bag and non-bagging, but relative humidity and the amount of water evaporation were changed in all treatments. The occurrence of unfertilized fruit, poorly colored fruit, russet and gray mold rot showed no significant difference in all treatment at harvest time. Developed grape bags decreased effectively the occurrence of cracking fruit and bitter rot in 'Campbell Early' fruit. There was no difference in growth of cluster and berry, soluble solids and total acidity in fruits, degree of skin color and bloom appearance at harvest time. The skin color and fruit boom and harvest time evaluation in developed grape bags were resulted excellent compared with the once of conventional bag and non bagging.

  • Phenotypic characteristics, pathogenicity and fungicides resistance of fifty one isolates of Botrytis cinerea obtained from various host plants were observed and determined. The relationships between these characteristics were also investigated on the basis of isolation host plants. The isolates of B. cinerea varied in the capacity of sclerotia formation and sporulation. The pathogenicity of 44 isolates from tomato, cucumber, and strawberry was significantly stronger with 3.2 cm in average diameter of necrotic lesions on cucumber leaves than that of seven isolates from other host plants such as orange, gerbera, ginseng, kiwi, grape, pear and from butter with 1.8 cm in average diameter of necrotic lesions. Benomyl resistance of 12 isolates from tomato plants was much higher with the $EC_{50}$, 562 ppm than that of 19 isolates from various host plants. Diethofencarb resistance, however, of 11 isolates from strawberry plants was highest with the $EC_{50}$, 210 ppm among isolates from other host plants. Polygalacturonase activity varied among isolates in the range of 0 to 103 unit and that of isolates from tomato, cucumber and strawberry was slightly lower than that of isolates from other host plants. No significant relationship between pathogenicity and fungicides resistance, polygalacturonase activity was found among 51 isolates of B. cinerea. Isozyme patterns of polygalacturonase produced from two strongly and weakly pathogenic isolates (FC122, KC6) were slightly different depending upon carbon sources during cultivation.

  • Forty-nine pigments were extracted from the collections of 106 pigment producing bacteria from the plant rhizosphere soil. Antibacterial activity test was performed in the subjects of the extracted pigments with plant pathogenic bacteria including Xanthomonas axonopodis and Xanthomonas campestris, and with plant pathogenic fungi including Botrytis cinerea, Colletotrichum acutatum, and Fusarium oxysporum. The yellow pigment by Chryseobacterium sp. RBR9 and the red pigment by of Methylobacterium sp. RI13 showed the antibacterial activities against Xanthomonas axonopodis and Xanthomonas campestris. The violet pigment by Collimonas sp. DEC-B5 showed the antibacterial activity as well as the antifungal activities against Botrytis cinerea and Fusarium oxysporum. Especially, the violet pigment inhibited the growth of Botrytis cinerea more than 65% at MIC $20{\mu}M$. Upon the HPLC analysis result for the isolation of pigment with antifungal activity, violacein (91.6%) and deoxyviolacein (8.4%) were isolated for the pigment by Collimonas sp. DEC-B5. The production amount of the pigment was increased more than 10 times higher when D-mannitol 1.5% and yeast extract 0.2% were added as the nitrogen source to SCB medium. This study suggests that produced violacein by Collimonas sp. DEC-B5 will be effective to control strawberry gray-mold rot fungi by its preventive activity.

  • The effects of fruit bagging time, bag kinds, and plant oil treatment on fruit cracking, pathogenic decay, and quality in grapevines were studied. The occurrence of cracking fruit was not affect by bag kinds in 'Campbell Early'. But, bitter rot occurrence in 'Campbell Early' and occurrence of cracking fruit and bitter rot in 'Wase Campbell Early' decreased effectively compared the ones of conventional bag, window bag, calcium coated bag to non-bagging. The cracking fruit occurrence of and 'Kyoho' decreased significantly by bagging to each before July 5 of 'Campbell Early' and before June 29 and July 5 of 'Kyoho' grapevines. The cracking fruit and bitter rot occurrence by plant oil treatment decreased significantly in 'Wase Campbell Early', and increased calcium of fruit skin in 'Campbell Early'. The soluble solids in fruits were much reduced by window bag and the Hunter b value in fruit skin was reduced by calcium coated bag. Accordingly, treatment of Ca-coated bag and plant oil was become judgment to reduction effect of cracking fruit.

  • The fungus Botrytis cinerea causes fruit rot of strawberry and the damages can result in harvest losses upto 50%. Proper timing of fungicide application is essential for successful control of Botrytis fruit rot, fenhexamid plus iminoctadine tris, cyprodinil plus fludioxonil, fludioxonil alone, and Bacillus subtilis QST713 were applied to individual buds, flowers, and green and red fruit of cultivar 'Seolhyang' ex vivo. Cyprodinil plus fludioxonil or fludioxonil alone was applied i) before and after a 5-hr period of low-temperature ($0^{\circ}C$) incubation ex vivo ii) in field trials. Strawberry flowers and red fruit were more susceptible to B. cinerea than the green fruits. Incidence of Botrytis rot with fenhexamid plus iminoctadine tris and cyprodinil plus fludioxonil was the lowest at flowering, whereas B. subtilis QST713 did not significantly among treatments. In 2010, incidence of Botrytis fruit rot was significantly reduced when fludioxonil was applied two times at 1 week intervals from 50% bloom in field trials. Cultivars Redpearl and Seolhyang were more susceptible to low-temperature than cvs. Maehyang and Akihime. Cyprodinil plus fludioxonil application was effective when applied before onset of the low-temperature treatment period. Fludioxonil showed the most effective when it was sprayed one and more than two times in before and post low-temperature condition, respectively. These results demonstrate that fungicide selection and timing can interact with stage of fruit development and low-temperature in determining effectiveness of suppression of Botrytis fruit rot.

  • During 2008~2009 winter season, yellow patch and gray snow mold occurred on turfgrass plants in golf courses in Kangwon and Jeonbuk provinces, respectively. The fungi associated with the diseases were identified as Rhizoctonia cerealis Van der Hoeven and Typhlua incarnata Lasch ex Fr., based on the morphological characteristics of hyphae and sclerotia. R. cerealis and T. incarnata were pathogenic to most turfgrass and crop species tested. R. cerealis infected crown, stem and leaf tissue of the host plants, and the symptom was light yellow circular patch. Individual infected leaf near the margin of patch developed red color first and finally turn brown. The symptoms caused by gray snow mold pathogen are water-soaked spots, and became a watery soft rot. Infection parts became yellow and then turned brown followed by death of the whole plant. White mycelia were developed on higher petioles, leaves, and on soil where these plant parts lay, and black sclerotia of variable size and shape formed in the mycelial mass. All isolates tested were pathogenic on most turfgrass and crop plants, and significantly different in aggressiveness. Disease severity increased with longer snow cover days on target plants, suggesting that disease severity was expressed over snow cover days. There were significant differences in disease severity among the graminious species, and among cultivars within each species, indicating varying levels of susceptibility to R. cerealis and T. incarnata.

  • The year of 2003 was characterized as a cool humid year. Low temperature and frequent rains were continued during March to July, resulting in 1.6 times higher rainfalls and 32% less sunshine period compared to the average yean Due to 2003's climatic condition, rice blast, and bacterial leaf blight occurred severely. Higher rainfalls caused severe epidemic of phytophthora disease and, in case of red-pepper, 55% of cultivation acreage was devastated by the disease over the country. Besides, crop diseases which become severe under cool-humid conditions, such as gray mold, sclerotinia rot, downy mildew, increased significantly compared to the previous year. In fruit trees, brown spot of apple, and pear scab occurred severely causing much yield loss.
