  • In this research, a novel and efficient quinoline thioacetamide functionalized magnetic graphene oxide composite ($GO@Fe_3O_4@QTA$) was synthesized and utilized for dispersive magnetic solid phase preconcentration of Cd(II) and Ni(II) ions in urine and various food samples. A number of diverse methods were employed for characterization of the new nanosorbent. The design of experiments approach and response surface methodology were applied to monitor and find the parameters that affect the extraction performance. After sorption and elution steps, the concentrations of target analytes were measured by employing FAAS. The highest extraction performance was achieved under the following experimental conditions: pH, 5.8; sorption time, 6.0 min; $GO@Fe_3O_4@QTA$ amount, 17 mg; 2.4 mL $1.1mol\;L^{-l}$ $HNO_3$ solution as the eluent and elution time, 13.0 min. The detection limit is 0.02 and $0.2ng\;mL^{-1}$ for Cd(II), and Ni(II) ions, respectively. The accuracy of the new method was investigated by analyzing two certified reference materials (sea food mix, Seronorm LOT NO 2525 urine powder). The interfering study revealed that there are no interferences from commonly occurring ions on the extractability of target ions. Finally, the new method was satisfactorily employed for rapid extraction and determination of target ions in urine and various food samples.

  • This paper reports the effect of adding reduced graphene oxide (RGO) as a conductive material to the composition of an electrode for capacitive deionization (CDI), a process to remove salt from water using ionic adsorption and desorption driven by external applied voltage. RGO can be synthesized in an inexpensive way by the reduction and exfoliation of GO, and removing the oxygen-containing groups and recovering a conjugated structure. GO powder can be obtained from the modification of Hummers method and reduced into RGO using a thermal method. The physical and electrochemical characteristics of RGO material were evaluated and its desalination performance was tested with a CDI unit cell with a potentiostat and conductivity meter, by varying the applied voltage and feed rate of the salt solution. The performance of RGO was compared to graphite as a conductive material in a CDI electrode. The result showed RGO can increase the capacitance, reduce the equivalent series resistance, and improve the electrosorption capacity of CDI electrode.

  • In many fiber concrete beams with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP), debonding occurs between the carbon sheets and the concrete due to the low strength of the bonding resin. A total of 42 fiber concrete beams with a cross-section of 10×10 cm with a span length of 50 cm are fabricated and retrofitted with CFRP and subjected to a 4-point bending test. Graphene Oxide (GO) at 1, 2, and 3 wt% of the resin is used to improve the mechanical properties of the bonding resins, and the effect of length, width, and the number of layers of CFRP and resin material are investigated. The crack pattern, failure mode, and stress-strain curve are analyzed and compared in each case. The results showed that adding GO to polyamine resin could improve the bonding between the resin and the fiber concrete beam. Furthermore, the optimum amount of nanomaterials is equal to 2% by the weight of the resin. Using 2% nanomaterials showed that by increasing the length, width, and number of layers, the bearing and stiffness of fiber concrete beams increased significantly.

  • Graphene-coated polymer particles have attracted research interests due to their emerging applications derived from their controlled structure and morphology. To control the properties of graphene oxide (GO)-polystyrene (PS) composite particles, the adsorption time and instantaneous adsorption conditions were investigated by varying their mixing method. Polystyrene particles prepared by emulsion polymerization were modified to have positive surface charge by adsorption of polyethylene imine (PEI) on the surface of PS particles. GO prepared by the chemical exfoliation method had negative surface charge from the oxygenated groups. The adsorption of the negatively charged GOs onto the positively charged PS particles was successfully completed, and it was found that a longer adsorption time and a greater difference in the instantaneous relative concentration led PS-GO particles to have more homogeneously coated surfaces without aggregation.

  • A novel conductive composite thin film was prepared for the first time by hybridization between polybenzoxazine (PBZ) having high heat resistance property and conductive graphene. Mechanically robust conductive graphene/PBZ composite thin films could effectively be prepared by a simple thermal treatment, which simultaneously induces reduction of graphene oxide (GO) and crosslinking reaction of benzoxazine monomer. Graphene sheets seem to be uniformly dispersed up to 3 wt% graphene content in the composite thin film as shown in the results of chemical/crystal structural and morphological analyses. This efficient route for making graphene/PBZ composite thin film would provide simultaneous improvement of mechanical property as well as electrical conductivity.

  • Nanocomposites including graphene oxide (GO) and conducting polymers (PPy, PANI and PEDOT) were prepared via an in-situ chemical polymerization process, and their characteristic properties depending upon the change of conducting polymer (CP) content were analyzed. A confirmation was made on not only the functional groups formed in GO but also the presence of CP existent in the nanocomposites. The molecular interaction between GO and poly(4-styrene sulfonic acid) (PSSA) or CP in the nanocomposites was proposed. With the increase of PEDOT content in the GOPSS/PEDOT nanocomposite, the estimated value of $I_D/I_G$ regarding the Raman analysis of them was decreased and a major change of their Raman spectra characteristic peaks was observed. In the GO-PSS/PEDOT nanocomposite, PEDOT molecules made an exfoliation of GO-PSSA layers and thus they were intercalated among layers. Such a unique molecular morphology induced the highest electrical conductivity for the GO-PSS/PEDOT nanocomposite among three kinds of nanocomposites prepared in this study. It is also noted that the uniform morphology confirmed in this study helped a thermal stability improvement in the nanocomposite due to the presence of GO or GO-PSSA acting as a thermal barrier.

  • To study gas membrane using GO (graphene oxide), the PEBAX [poly(ether-block-amide)]-GO polymer composite membrane was prepared by adding GO to PEBAX. Through this composite membrane, gas permeation characteristics for $H_2$, $N_2$, $CH_4$, and $CO_2$ were studied. As a result of the gas permeation test, the permeability of $N_2$, $CH_4$, and $CO_2$ to PEBAX-GO composite membranes gradually decreased as the GO content increased. On the other hand, the gas permeability of $H_2$ increased with the increase of GO content, and it was 21.43 barrer at the GO content of 30 wt%, which was about 5 times higher than that of PEBAX membrane. This is because the GO was easier to operate with a fast and selective gas transport channel for $H_2$ than other gases. The increased selectivity ($H_2/N_2$) and selectivity ($H_2/CH_4$) were influenced by the diffusion selectivity by the permeate gas size. The increased selectivity ($CO_2/N_2$) and selectivity ($CO_2/CH_4$) were more influenced by the solubility selectivity due to the affinity of $CO_2$ and GO for -COOH.

  • Development of simple and efficient method for large-scale production of mechanically strong and electrically conductive graphene fiber is highly desirable for practical applications, such as fiber-reinforced composites, wearable electronics, and electromagnetic irradiation shielding. Here, we present a facile approach for the preparation of amine-functionalized graphene fibers by simple wet-spinning of diamine-functionalized graphene oxide (GO-$NH_2$), which is used because of its synthetic convenience, good dispersity, and scalable production with low cost. The amine-functionalized graphene fiber shows high electrical and mechanical properties compared to pristine graphene oxide fiber due to the electrostatic interaction between amine groups and electronegative functional groups of graphene oxide.

  • In this study, the PVdF/MGO composite nanofiber membranes (PMGs) introducing Iron oxide-Graphene oxide ($Fe_3O_4/GO$, Metallic graphene oxide; MGO) was prepared via electrospinng method and its arsenic removal characteristics were investigated. The thermal treatment was carried out to improve the mechanical strength of nanofiber membranes and then the results showed that of outstanding improvement effect. However, in case of PMGs, the decreasing tendency of mechanical strength was indicated as increasing MGO contents. From the results of pore-size analysis, it was confirmed that the porous structured membranes with 0.3 to $0.45{\mu}m$ were prepared. For the water treatment application, the water flux measurement was carried out. In particular, PMG2.0 sample showed about 70% improved water flux results ($153kg/m^2h$) compared to that of pure PVdF nanofiber membrane ($91kg/m^2h$) under the 0.3 bar condition. In addition, the PMGs have indicated the high removal rates of both As(III) and As(V) (up to 81% and 68%, respectively). Based on the adsorption isotherm analysis, the adsorption of As(III) and As(V) ions were both more suitable for the Freundlich. From all of results, it was concluded that PVdF/MGO composite nanofiber membranes could be utilized as a water treatment membrane and for the Arsenic removal applications.

  • Core-shell structured $Fe_3O_4/graphene$ composites were synthesized by aerosol spray drying process from a colloidal mixture of graphene oxides and $Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticles. The structural and electrochemical performance of $Fe_3O_4/graphene$ were characterized by the field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and galvanometric discharge-charge method. Core-shell structured $Fe_3O_4/GR$ composites were synthesized in different mass ratios of $Fe_3O_4$ and graphene oxide. The composite particles were around $3{\mu}m$ in size. $Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticles were encapsulated with a graphene. Morphology of the $Fe_3O_4/graphene$ composite particles changed from a spherical ball having a relatively smooth surface to a porous crumpled paper ball as the content of GO increased in the composites. The $Fe_3O_4/GR$ composite fabricated at the weight ratio of 1:4 ($Fe_3O_4:GO$) exhibited higher specific capacitance($203F\;g^{-1}$) and electrical conductivity than as-fabricated $Fe_3O_4/GR$ composite.
