  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among perceived health, parental stress, social support, and quality of life of grandparent caregivers and to identify the factors influencing quality of their life. Methods: A descriptive correlational design was used. The data were collected by questionnaires from a convenience sample of 130 participants taking care of their grandchildren from ten children's daycare centers in Seoul, Korea from August to September, 2013. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation efficients, and multiple regressions. Results: Perceived health, parental stress and social support were correlated significantly with quality of life. As a result of the multiple regression analysis, education level, age of grandchildren, perceived health, parental stress and social support accounted for 48% of the variance in quality of life. Perceived health, parental stress, and social support were identified as factors influencing quality of life and the variable that most affected quality of life was perceived health. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that health of people taking care of their grandchildren must be promoted while relieving their parental stress with appropriate social support in order to improve quality of life.

Adolescents were found to consume mainly homemade meals for breakfast and dinner while consuming institutional foodservice at school for lunch. Percentage of skipping meals among adolescents was different by time of meals, and they skipped meals due to lack of time, which was different according to household type. Main food for breakfast was rice, and percentage of skipping breakfast was the highest in single parent households. Satisfaction of food-related life was lowest in grandparent households. Especially, satisfaction was highest if they had rice for breakfast. For influencing factors on skipping breakfast, social support, eating regularly, concern for origin, and single parent household were found to be significant. • Despite expansion of the mulnaengmyeon market, there have been no studies on consumers' attitudes towards mulnaengmyeon. The purpose of this study was to investigate the usage and consumption patterns for mulnaengmyeon among adults in the Seoul metropolitan area of Korea. A survey including demo- and socio-graphics, general mulnaengmyeon usage, and consumption questions was tested on 210 consumers. The results of the survey showed that the majority of consumers consumed mulnaengmyeon more frequently during summer. Although the instant mulnaengmyeon market has rapidly increased, it was found that mulnaengmyeon is a food that is generally consumed in restaurants. In addition, mulnaengmyeon usage and consumption patterns significantly differed according to consumer age, whereas there was no difference observed according to parent's or grandparent's hometown of origin. Older consumers were observed to consume and purchase mulnaengmyeon as well as instant mulnaengmyeon more often than young consumers. Also, older consumers were shown to consider "health" related factors as more important when selecting mulnaengmyeon, whereas young consumers considered "price" related factors to be more important.

  • Grandparent-grandchildren family adolescents(GGFAs) need to be well discussed because they tend to be more influenced by the negative surroundings than ordinary family adolescents. Over the past few years, several studies have been made on the correlation between the risk factor, the protective factor and the school resilience of GGFAs, but these studies have the limit to explain the only correlation between the one factor and the school resilience. So the purpose of this study was to examine not only the direct effect between the risk factor and the protective factor, but also the parametric path and effect that the one factor has influence on the correlation between the another factor and the school resilience of GGFAs. We investigated the 328 GGFAs in Korea, and the analytic method used was the Structural Equation Modeling(SEM). The followings are the results of this paper. It was found that the model adaptability had a considerable validity by inspecting the SEM, which showed not only the direct effect between the risk factor, protective factor and the school resilience of GGFAs, but also the mediation effect by the protective factor. The risk factors - the indifference of teacher, the negative attachment relationship, melancholy, uneasiness etc - had a negative influence on the school resilience of GGFAs. The protective factors - the supporss etteacher, self-esteem etc - had a positive influence on the school resilience of GGFAs. The protective factors were found to reduce the negative influence on the school resilience of GGFAs.

  • There has been a significant increase in the number of divorced families during the past 10 years in Korea. Divorce imposes a great impact on their children as well as divorcees. As many as 1.41 million children under 20 years-old have experienced their parents' divorce in past 10 years. Children are faced with much difficulty in adjustment after the parental divorce. Issues of the research and policy on the divorced family are discussed in this study. For future studies, a longitudinal research model, father-custody and grandparent-custody families, custody parents's gender, a theoretical model for Korean divorced families should be considered. New legislations have been recently enacted to enhance children's well-being, but further efforts such as the involvement of child development specialists in the divorce process should be followed in the pursuit of the best interest of the children.

  • This research studied the social-emotional competence of children whose primary caregiver was a single-mother or single-father alone compared with children living with a single-parent but the primary caregiver was a non-parent (e.g. a grandparent). Subjects were 208 children (105 boys, 103 girls) from 10 elementary schools in 3 metropolitan cities. Instruments were the Adaptive Behavior Checklist constructed by the researcher, Self-esteem Inventory (Kim, 1987) and Emotional Competence Scale (Kim, 1998). Results showed that children in single-mother families were more social-emotionally competent than children in single-father families. Children whose primary caregivers were non-parents had higher self-esteem than children whose primary caregivers were single parents alone. There were interaction effects of caregiver variables on children's peer relationships and awareness/expression of their own emotion.
