The Si5AION7 specimens containing 20% YAG composition have been sintered and then heat treated to induce the crystallization of the matrix glassy phase. Crystallization of YAG phase during the heat treatment was detected from the X-ray diffraction patterns and the consequent changes in room temperature toughness as well as in microstructures were investigated. Almost all the glassy boundary phase were found to crystallize even after 5 minutes of heat treatment and the KC at room temperature decreased accordingly. The results show that the matrix crystallization can be induced by slow cooling from the sintering temperature.

A glassy thin film was formed on the surface of the blast furnace slag. When blast furnace slag is used as an admixture of concrete, addition of alkali activators were required. However, alkali activators are not only dangerous as chemical products, but they are also difficult to use as expensive materials. Therefore, it is necessary to study the way of removal of the glassy thin film of blast furnace slag without the risk and cost increase. In this study, to solve this problem, experiment was carried out to improve the hydration reactivity by treatment the surface of blast furnace slag using arc discharge. Experimental results show that when the surface of the blast furnace slag was tratmented by arc discharge, the glassy thin film was destroyed. And the hydration reactivity was improved, the compressive strength was increased.
Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), which is glassy polymer to have amide functional group, was induced to fabricate the facilitated olefin transport membranes for olefin/paraffin separation. Separation performance for the mixed gas consisting of propylene and propane (50 : 50 vol%) was measured by gas chromatography and bubble flow meter. The properties of membranes were confirmed by scanning electron microscope and FT-IR. The results of long-term separation tests showed the selectivity of 15 and permeance of 1.3 GPU. The membranes was compared with poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) $(POZ)/AgBF_4/Al(NO_3)_3$ membranes and the characteristics were confirmed as polymer matrix for facilitated transport membranes.
It is not rare that pseudotachylite, dark colored rock with glassy texture, is recognizable in deep core samples drilled up to 900 m from the surface. Pseudotachylite with widths varying few to 20 cm is sharply contacted or interlayered with the host rocks composed of Jurassic granite and Precambrian amphibolite gneiss, showing moderately ductile deformation or slight folding. Pseudotachylite occurring at varying depths in the deep drill core are slightly different in texture and thickness. There is evidence of fault gouge at shallower depths, although brittle deformation is pervasive in most drill cores and pseudotachylite is identified at random depth intervals. Under scanning electron microscope (SEM), it is evident that the surface of pseudotachylite is characterized by a smooth, glassy matrix even at micrometer scale and there is little residual fragments in the glass matrix except microcrystals of quartz with embayed shape. Such textural evidence strongly supports the idea that the pseudotachylite was generated through the friction melting related to strong seismic events. Based on X-ray diffraction (XRD) quantitative analysis, it consists of primary minerals such as quartz, feldspars, biotite, amphibole and secondary minerals including clay minerals, calcite and glassy materials. Such mineralogical features of fractured materials including pseudotachylite indicate that the fractured zone might form at low temperatures possibly below $300^{\circ}C$, which implies that the seismic activity related to the formation of pseudotachylite took place at shallow depths, possibly at most 10 km. Identification and characterization of pseudotachylite provide insight into a better understanding of the paleoseismic activity of deep grounds and fundamental information on the stability of candidate disposal sites for high-level radioactive waste.
In oxide matrix-SiC(W) composites, instability and glassy phase formation due to oxidation at the high temperature and the diffusion of Si, respectively, cause brittle fracture and low reliability for ceramic materials. The mode of contribution in each mechanisms induced by matrix-whisker debonding, varies with the morphology of matrix-whisker interfaces. This work has described the dispersion behaviours and stabilization mechanisms in slip systems, and multiple toughening mechanisms by dint of two second phase different from each other when spherical ZrO2 and chemically stable Al2O3(W) is respectively added in Al2O3 matrix. To obtain complexshaped components, slip casted bodies were sintered at 1$600^{\circ}C$, 2hrs up to 98~99% R.D.. Multiple toughening mechanisms in comparison with theories reported until now will be discussed as a result of the phase analysis of ZrO2 by athermal behaviours and microstructural characterizations as well as measured mechanical properties.

In-situ quasicrystalline icosahedral (I) phase reinforced Ti-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) matrix composites have been successfully fabricated by using two distinct thermal histories for BMG forming alloy. The BMG composite containing micron-scale Iphase has been introduced by controlling cooling rate during solidification, whereas nano-scale I-phase reinforced BMG composite has been produced by partial crystallization of BMG. For mechanical properties, micron-scale I-phase distributed BMG composite exhibited lower strength and plasticity compared to the monolithic BMG. On the other hand, nano-scale icosahedral phase embedded BMG composite showed enhanced strength and plasticity. These improved mechanical properties were attributed to the multiplication of shear bands and blocking of the shear band propagation in terms of isolation and homogeneous distribution of nanosize icosahdral phases in the glassy matrix, followed by stabilizing the mechanical and deformation instabilities.
The SiC-porcelain powder mixtures containing 51.9wt% SiC are produced as by-products from the surface abrasion process of porcelain cores. This raw powders were used as starting materials for the synthesis of SiC containing ceramics. The specimen, which was fired at 135$0^{\circ}C$ from raw powders, had SiC, $Al_{2}O_{3}$, , cristobalite, mullite as crystalline phases, and the fractured microstructure showed dispersed SiC crystalline particles almost wetted with glassy matrix and spherical pores. Although the oxidation of SiC containing powder compacts wetted with glassy matrix and spherical pores. Although the oxidation of SiC containing powder compacts started at the range of 600~80$0^{\circ}C$ form the analysis of weight gain, the presence of $SiO_{2}$ crystallien phase and cristobalite was confirmed at 100$0^{\circ}C$ by XRD analysis. Mullitization of specimens was accelerated by preheating before the final firing. The specimen sintered at 135$0^{\circ}C$ after 100$0^{\circ}C$ preheating consisted of SiC, cristobalite, mullite as crystalline phases, and revealed 2.24g/$cm^{3}$ bulk density, 11.73% water adsorption, porous microstructure with small amount of glassy phase. SiC contents of specimens, which was 51.9 wt% in the raw powders, reduced to 37~22 wt% after firing at 135$0^{\circ}C$ depending on the preheating condition.
Research was conducted to characterize the copper production and smelting process with 11 copper smelting by-products (copper slag and copper crucible) excavated from the NA and LA areas at the Gwanbuk-ri archeological site in Buyeo. Scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy, wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, and Raman microspectroscopy were employed in the analysis. The research results reveal that the copper slag from Gwanbuk-ri contained silicate oxide, magnetite, fayalite, and delafossite, which are typical characteristics of crucible slag and refined slag. The outward appearance and microstructure of the slag were grouped as follows: 1. glassy matrix + Cu prill, 2. glassy matrix + Cu prill + magnetite, 3. silicate mineral matrix + Cu prill, 4. crystalline (delafossite and magnetite) + amorphous (Cu prill), 5. magnetite + fayalite, and 6. slag from slag. The copper slags from Guanbuk-ri were found to contain residues of impurities such as SiO2, Al2O3, CaO, SO4, P2O5, Ag2O, and Sb2O3 in their microstructure, and, in some cases, it was confirmed that copper, tin and lead are alloys. These results indicate that refining of intermediate copper(including impurities) and refining of alloys of copper(including impurities) - tin and refining of copper(including impurities) - tin - lead took place during the copper production process at Gwanbuk-ri, Buyeo.
