  • The design, construction and management of underground facilities as infrastructure of nation should be properly carried out. One of reasons for underground facilitie's failure is a non-proper construction of backfill materials. This is common for circular underground pipes. A non-proper compaction is the cause of settlement and decrease of performance of underground facilities. The use of controlled low strength materials is an alternative to reduce the couple of failure problems. The flowability, self-cementation, and non-compaction are the major advantages to use the controlled low strength materials. In this research, couple of recycled materials, such as in-situ soil, water-treatment sludge, and crumb rubbers, were adopted. The basic properties of each materials were determined according to KS or ASTM. Also, couple of laboratory tests were carried out to get the design parameters for geotechnical and roadway area.

  • Recently a removable soil nail is demanded due to problems beyond of economical and engineering purpose. In this study removable soil nails are developed and field pull-out tests are carried out 16 times in order to analysis pull-out characteristics of the removable soil nail. For the spacing and the installed position of fixed socket, the length of the soil nail, and W/C ratio of cement grout in the removable soil nail, pull-out characteristics of pull-out tests are analyzed. From the pull-out characteristics of removable soil nails, it is found that the spacing of fixed socket and W/C ratio of cement grout are important design parameters.

  • The method which makes the soft ground reinforced by using the geogrid, a kind of geosynthetics has been getting popular and its usefulness also has been increased due to reduction in costs, ease of construction and great exterior view, But the study on the frictional characteristics, which is the important factor in design, between reinforcement and soil is insufficient. In this study, compaction degrees were considered through large-scale pullout tests. As a part of studying on estimation of pullout frictional characteristics between soil and geosynthetics, pullout tests were peformed and from the result of pullout tests, pullout frictional parameters between soil and geosynthetics were obtained and pullout behaviors were learned.

  • Geosynthetic tubes inflated with water, clay slurry or sand have been widely used for large dike construction in land reclamation projects. In this paper, analytical solutions for geosynthetic tube resting on rigid foundation is presented by adopting an approach similar to that presented by Leshchinsky et al. (1996). The proposed method allows a quick preliminary design to be made for using a closed-form solution. To simplify the analysis, relationships between geometrical parameters and pumping pressure are established using numerical method. The analytical solutions were compared with several existing solutions and good agreements were achieved.

  • The Bieniawski's geomechanics classification system(1984) is widely employed as a tool of engineering evaluation of rock masses for tunnel design. Since the siz parameters adoped in the system are believed to control the engineering behavior of rock mass under an external load, no question may be raised to the conceptional idea immanent in the system. However, the rating grade for each individual parameter given in the system may be properly measured since an engineering property of rock mass is not stepwise changed but continuously changed. In order to get the proper rating grade based upon the continuously changed properties in each parameter, several equations presented in this paper are obtained through regration analyses with the grades and median values of properties givne in the system. A FORTRAN computer program given in the paper could provide not only RMR value but also rock mass properties (E, c, o, v, etc.) using the empirical equations.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand behaviors of slopes and determine soil parameters of slopes through the triaxial compression test and the direct shear test. Following results were obtained by comparing and analyzing model tests and analysis programs of slope stability. The safety factors of the Bishop's simple method, the Morgenstern Price method, the Spencer method and the GLE method were similar to each other but safety factors of the Fellenius method and the Janbu method were different from the formers. It was found that the Bishop's simple method, the Morgenstern Price method, the Spencer method and the GLE method could be used for design but attention should be paid to the Fellenius method and the Janbu method since they underestimated safety factor.

  • For this study, a Peliyagoda area located on a route was selected among many sections of a CKE(Colombo to Katunayake Expressway) route in Sri-Lanka. Its subground consists of a very weak and thick peat soil named amorphous or fibrous peat. All of data, obtained in the design process of soft ground treatment were analyzed to evaluate the settlement characteristics resulted from an embankment load and to present reasonable methods for estimation of secondary compression settlement. For these purposes, soil parameters were used obtainedby field and laboratory tests the settlement analyses were conducted base on the field monitoring results within 20 months. In addition, Reasonable methods were studied to estimate primary consolidation and secondary compression settlement.

  • This paper deal with cause and analysis about case of collapsed reinforced-soil retaining wall. The analysis of the cause was carried through experimentation, slop stability analysis and literature study. The experimentation treated the large direct shear test, the hydraulic conductivity test and the other basic test through backfill extracted from collapsed reinforced-soil retaining wall. The ultimate tensile strength was established by rib tensile strength test of geogrid. The analysis of internal and external stability of reinforced-soil retaining wall was performed on the basis of parameters. The result of analysis, reinforced-soil retaining wall and the slope at the dry season are stable. However, the factors that fine-grained soil at hydrometer test exceed the standard of the design, rainfall duration is too long at the time of collapse and monthly pricipitation is heavy are cause of the collapse.

  • This paper presents a careful theoretical investigation into interfacial stresses in reinforced concrete foundation beam repairing with composite plate. The essential issue in the analysis of reinforced structures with composite materials is to understand the individual behaviour of each material and its interaction with the remaining ones. The present model is based on equilibrium and deformations compatibility requirements in and all parts of the repaired RC foundation beam, i.e., the reinforced concrete foundation beam, the composite plate and the adhesive layer. The theoretical predictions are compared with other existing solutions, By comparisons between the existing solutions and the present new solution enable a clear appreciation of the effects of various parameters such as the geometric characteristics and mechanical properties of the components of the repaired beam, as well as the geotechnical stresses of the soil are considered. This research is helpful for the understanding on mechanical behaviour of the interface and design of the composite-concrete hybrid structures.

  • Compaction Grouting System, the method which makes ground compact by injection of low slump mortar, Is widely used for reinforcement of soft ground, restoration of structures happened differential settlement, underpinning and restoration of damaged dam core. The quantitive analysis of ground improvement for this method has not performed yet. So, design parameters about thls method must be studied through performance of CGS in various types of soil to make CGS adaptable widely. In this study PBT, SPT and field density test were performed for analysis of the characteristics of ground improvement and pressuremeter and inclinometer were installed for analysis of the characteristics of compaction in adjacent ground. In this paper, denoted much effects for filled ground that increasing of the bearing capacity, confirming the displacement of adjacent ground and the effective radius of injection.
