  • To compute a permeability coefficient along a rough fracture that takes into account the fracture geometry, this study performed detailed measurements of fracture roughness using a confocal laser scanning microscope, a quantitative analysis of roughness using a spectral analysis, and a homogenization analysis to calculate the permeability coefficient on the microand macro-scale. The homogenization analysis is a type of perturbation theory that characterizes the behavior of microscopically inhomogeneous material with a periodic boundary condition in the microstructure. Therefore, it is possible to analyze accurate permeability characteristics that are represented by the local effect of the facture geometry. The Cpermeability coefficients that are calculated using the homogenization analysis for each rough fracture model exhibit an irregular distribution and do not follow the relationship of the cubic law. This distribution suggests that the permeability characteristics strongly depend on the geometric conditions of the fractures, such as the roughness and the aperture variation. The homogenization analysis may allow us to produce more accurate results than are possible with the preexisting equations for calculating permeability.

  • Electronic products such as appliances, computers, and cellular phones have printed circuit boards (PCBs) in common and the PCBs in the waste electronic products contain valuable metals and organic resins. In Korea, recovery and recycling of the organic resins as well as the valuable metallics from the wastes are required indeed as the most of resources are being imported from abroad. In this article, the patents and papers for the recycling of organic residues from the waste PCBs were collected and analyzed. The open patents of USA (US), European Union (EP), Japan (JP), and Korea (KR) and SCI journals from 1979 to 2012 were investigated. The patents and journals were collected using key-words and filtered by the definition of the technology. The patents and journals were analyzed by the years, countries, companies, and technologies and the technical trends were discussed in this paper. It is showed sluggish relatively activity of published papers and patent applications for polymer manufacturing technology in local and abroad.

  • Tungsten carbide is widely used in carbide tools. However, its production process generates a significant number of end-of-life products and by-products. Therefore, it is necessary to develop efficient recycling methods and investigate the remanufacturing of tungsten carbide using recycled materials. Herein, we have recovered 99.9% of the tungsten in cemented carbide hard scrap as tungsten oxide via an alkali leaching process. Subsequently, using the recovered tungsten oxide as a starting material, tungsten carbide has been produced by employing a self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) method. SHS is advantageous as it reduces the reaction time and is energy-efficient. Tungsten carbide with a carbon content of 6.18 wt % and a particle size of 116 nm has been successfully synthesized by optimizing the SHS process parameters, pulverization, and mixing. In this study, a series of processes for the high-efficiency recycling and quality improvement of tungsten-based materials have been developed.

  • Phillipsite-type zeolite powders were synthesized from domestic coal fly ash by hydrothermal reaction with 2.0 M-3.5M NaOH solution at $80^{\circ}C{\sim}120^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. The properties of zeolite were investigated by XRD, SEM and IR spectroscopy. The effects of chemical composition of fly ash, reaction temperature and NaOH concentration on the zeolite synthesis were well appeared on IR spectra. It is found that the $TO_4$(T=Si, Al) tetrahedra have a well ordered structure as the $SiO_2$ content, synthesis temperature and NaOH concentration become high.

  • We developed an improved method for tilt series alignment with fiducial markers in electron tomography. Based on previous works regarding alignment, we adapted the Levenberg-Marquardt method to solve the nonlinear least squares problem by incorporating a new formula for the alignment model. We also suggested a new method to estimate the initial value for inversion with higher accuracy. The proposed approach was applied to geopolymers. A better alignment of the tilt series was achieved than that by IMOD S/W. The initial value estimation provided both stability and a good rate of convergence since the new method uses all marker positions, including those partly covering the tilt images.

  • Artificial mattes were prepared with adding pyrite or chalcopyrite as sulfur sources with Cu-Ni-Co-Fe alloy. The major phases identified by X-ray diffraction pattern were $(FeSi)_9S_8$, $CuFeS_2$, FeS, $Co_4S_3$, $Ni_3S_2$ and $Cu_2S$ for both mattes, and the matte prepared by adding chalcopyrite showed the higher peak of $Cu_2S$ due to high content of copper. Under optimum conditions, more than 95% copper, 90% nickel and 90% cobalt were extracted into leaching solution and sulfur concentration in the mattes did not much affect the leaching efficiency of the metals. The increase of the amount of pyrite or chalcopyrite added decreased pH in leaching solution and increased the concentration of iron ion dissolved in the leaching solution and the amount of residue.

  • In this study, we analyzed changes in policies after the Korean New Deal Policy in 2020, metaverse and 6th generation communication technology. In the research and development of geoscience and mineral resources, we emphasized on the connection between smart cities and digital twins by focusing on the linkage of the real world and geo-information. Further, we examined trends in developing digital twins after the Korean New Deal Policy in 2020 that focused on three-dimensional visualization technology, the first stage in implementing digital twins, and real-time monitoring technology of underground information, the second implementing stage. As results of this study, we emphasized on the efforts to provide accurate underground information based on geology, groundwater and geo-environment and to analyze and predict near-real-time levels of available underground information to the industry, local governments and the central governments. Research and development that integrate the fields of geology, environment, and information is required to lead national digital twin policies and smart city policies owing to the acceleration of the digital economy in Korea and globally during the post-Corona era.

  • The artificial dry silica used as dry aggregates in domestic is collected increasing every year. It is required drying process for the production of dry aggregates, therefore, it is main culprit of the cost up of aggregates and air pollution by using fossil fuel for the solution, it is developed alternative aggregates for the replacement of dry aggregates very ungently. In this article, the patents and papers for the recycling technology on the high-efficiency rapid cooling method of ladle furnace slag were collected and analyzed. The open patents of USA (US), European Union (EP), Japan (JP), and Korea (KR) and SCI journals from 1977 to 2013 were investigated. The patents and journals were collected using key-words and filtered by the definition of the technology. • A study on the dry beneficiation of sericite occurring in the Daehyun Mine of the Republic of Korea region as performed by applying selective grinding and air classification techniques. Quartz and sericite occurred in the raw ore as major components. The results of liberation using a ball mill and an impact mill showed that the contents of $R_2O$ were increased while $SiO_2$ was decreased in proportion to decreasing particle size. According to the XRD, XRF analysis and the EDS of SEM analysis, the ball mill gave a better grade product in $R_2O$ content than the impact mill when the particle size was the same. When the raw ore was ground by the impact mill with arotor speed 57.6 m/sec and then followed by 15,000rpm classification using an air classifier, the chemical composition of the over flowed product was 49.65wt% $SiO_2$, 32.15wt% $Al_2O_3$, 0.13wt% $Fe_2O_3$, 10.37wt% $K_2O$, and 0.14wt% $Na_2O$. This result indicates that the $R_2O$ contents were increased by 49.5% compared to that of the raw ore. From these results described above, it is suggested that hard mineral such as Quartz little ground by selective grinding using impact mill whereas soft mineral such as sericite easily ground to small size. As a result of that hard minerals can be easily removed from the finely ground sericite by air classification and the $R_2O$ grade of thus obtained concentrate was improved to higher than 10wt% which can be used for ceramics raw materials.
