  • Studies on the effects of layered silicate content on the AC electrical treeing and breakdown behaviors of epoxy/layered silicate nanocomposites were carried out in needle-plate electrode geometry. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) analysis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation showed that 1 wt% of the multilayered silicate was fully exfoliated into nano-sized monolayers in the epoxy matrix however, over 3 wt% of the silicate was in an intercalated state. When 1 wt% layered silicates were incorporated, an electrical tree was initiated in 439 min and propagated at a speed of 2.3 ${\mu}m$/min after applying 781.4 kV/mm, representing a decreased in starting initiation time by a factor of 11.0 and increase in propagation speed by a factor 8.2 in comparison with neat epoxy resin. These values were in great decline after the layered silicate content was increased to 3wt% which implies that the exfoliated silicate blocked the tree initiation and propagation processes effectively. However the effect was largely decreased in the intercalated state.

  • In this study, the design of prestressed die for spur gear forging have been investigated. The stress concentration at notch of the die insert is very important in the design of die for the forging of spur gear such as non-axisymmetric geometry. In the previous study, the flexible tolerance method was used in order to search the optimal value of design variables considering the constrain conditions. In the design process, it was also involved the safety factor to the yield strength of each ring by considering allowable tensile or compressive hoop stress in each ring. Using this technique, the die deign for spur gear forging has been successfully performed without yielding of the die after shrink fitting and during forging.

  • The relationship between mass transfer and reaction within the washcoat is investigated in a monolith type micro-scale Pt-catalytic combustor. Nondimensionalized balance equation of butane is applied in a simplified washcoat geometry having the shape of slab. Both Thiele modulus and effectiveness factor are considered to compare reaction rate and diffusion rate according to the operation temperature and the diameter of alumina nano-pores. The effect of reaction becomes stronger as the temperature increases, while the effect of diffusion becomes relatively dominant as the diameter of nano-pores increases. From the analysis of butane distribution within the washcoat, design criterion for the thickness of washcoat is discussed.

  • This study was conducted for verification and systematization of estimation method about the headloss using CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics). Head loss which happens between the inlet and outlet of in-line mixer can be a major factor for the design and construction. Also, this Case studies about the sensitivity related to the velocity in the piping system. As result, program's default calculation function was used to get each side's total pressure and the differential of each total pressure could be defined as head loss from in-line mixer. In the case of adopting pipe surface friction factor and geometry loss, Calculation residual can be much more reduced. It was found that residual of value between CFD method and field test ranged about 3 through 18 precent.

  • In this paper, solenoid-type 3-D passives (inductors and transformers) have been designed, fabricated, and characterized by using electroplating techniques, wire bonding techniques, multi-layer thick photoresist, and low temperature processes which are compatible with semiconductor circuitry fabrication. Two different fabrication approaches are performed to develop the solenoid-type 3-D passives and relationship of performance characteristics and geometry is also deeply investigated such as windings, cross-sectional area of core, spacing between windings, and turn ratio. Fully integrated inductor has a quality factor of 31 at 6 GHz, an inductance of 2.7 nH, and a self resonant frequency of 15.8 GHz. Bonded wire inductor has a quality factor of 120, an inductance of 20 nH, and a self resonant frequency of 8 GHz. Integrated transformers with turn ratios of 1:1 and n:l have the minimum insertion loss of about 0.6 dB and the wide bandwidth of a few GHz.

  • This paper investigated plane strain stress intensity factors caused by thermal impact on a center-crack strip. The crack was aligned perpendicularly to the strip boundary. The problem was analysed by determining the dislocation density function in the singular integral equations formulated by the dislocation theory. Under the abrupt temperature change along the edge, the center crack behaved as a mode I crack due to the symmetric geometry. The value of maximum stress intensity factor monotonically increased until the ratio of dimensionless crack length approached to about 0.3, followed by gradual decrease. As a result, a critical corresponding crack length was determined.

  • Improving over a previous study [1], this paper provides a Monte Carlo method for the heat conduction analysis of problems with complicated geometry (such as a pebble with dispersed fuel particles). The method is based on the theoretical results of asymptotic analysis of neutron transport equation. The improved method uses an appropriate boundary layer correction (with extrapolation thickness) and a scaling factor, rendering the problem more diffusive and thus obtaining a heat conduction solution. Monte Carlo results are obtained for the randomly distributed fuel particles of a pebble, providing realistic temperature distributions (showing the kernel and graphite-matrix temperatures distinctly). The volumetric analytic solution commonly used in the literature is shown to predict lower temperatures than those of the Monte Carlo results provided in this paper.

  • Kikukawa's compliance method using the conventional crack mouth clip-on gauge was proposed as a desired measurement technique to monitor the notched specimen fatigue behavior. The measurement technique makes it possible to continuously monitor the initiation and growth of incipient small part-through crack originated at the notch root and the phenomenon of crack closure. The variarion of natural flaw geometry with fatigue cycling was investigated. The test results on 7075-T6 aluminium alloy suggest the dependence of effective stress intensity factor range ratio .upsilon. on the maximum stress intensity factor .KAPPA.max.

  • Failure mechanisms of welded joints under fatigue loads are interpreted that multiple collinear surface cracks initiating randomly along the weld toes propagate under the mutual interaction and coalescence of adjacent two cracks. To estimate fatigue crack propagation life for three types of the representative welded joints, i.e. non-load carrying cruciform, cover plate and longitudinal stiffener joint, the stress intensity factors at the front of the surface cracks have to be calculated, which are influenced strongly by the geometry of attachments, weld toes and the crack shapes. For the effective calculation of the stress intensity factors the Mk-factor was introduced which can be derived by a parametric study performed by FEM considering influence of the geometrical effects. The fatigue life of the cruciform joint was estimated by using the Mk-factors and the method considering the propagation mechanisms of the multiple surface cracks. Analysis results for the fatigue life had a good agreement with that of experiment.

  • This paper deals with the thermo-elastic damping (TED) due to the temperature change in a beam when it is in a resonant condition. Based on previous references, the analytical formulation for TED of a resonant thin beam was derived, and then TED was expressed as a function of the geometry of the beam, especially, its thickness. It was clearly shown that TED of a resonant beam is significantly varied for different thickness. Finally, the worst thickness of the beam has been identified in regard to the high-Q factor, and the result was compared to the finite element analysis.
