An assumed strain finite strip method(FSM) using the non-periodic B-spline for a shell is presented. In the present method, the shape function based on the non-periodic B-splines satisfies the Kronecker delta properties at the boundaries and allows to introduce interior supports in much the same way as in a conventional finite element formulation. In the formulation for a shell, the geometry of the shell is defined by non-periodic B3-splines without any tangential vectors at the ends and the penalty function method is used to incorporate the drilling degrees of freedom. In this study, new assumed strain fields using the non-periodic B-spline function are proposed to overcome the locking problems. The strip formulated in this way does not posses any spurious zero energy modes. The versatility and accuracy of the new approach are demonstrated through a series of numerical examples.

Recently, one has realized that the threedimensional positioning technique used in GPS can be effectively applied to the modern two-dimensional positioning. Such a technique might has applied to the twodimensional positioning in fields of the mobile communication, eLORAN and the GPS jamming/ electronic warfare system. In the paper, we have studied on algorithms for two-dimensional positioning based on GPS Pseudorange Technique. The main works and results are summarized below. First, the linearized state equation was mathematically derived based on GPS pseudorange technique. Second, the geometry model with respect to triangles formed using unit-vectors were proposed for investigation of land-based radio positioning. Finally, the corresponding mathematical formulations for DOP values and covariance matrix were designed for two-dimensional positioning.
This paper presents a triangular-to-quadrilateral mesh conversion method that can control the directionality of the output quadrilateral mesh according to a user-specified vector field. Given a triangular mesh and a vector field, the method first scores all possible quadrilaterals that can be formed by pairs of adjacent triangles, according to their shape and directionality. It then converts the pairs into quadrilateral elements in order of the scores to form a quadrilateral mesh. Engineering analyses with finite element methods occasionally require a quadrilateral mesh well aligned along the boundary geometry or the directionality of some physical phenomena, such as in the directions of a streamline, shock boundary, or force propagation vectors. The mesh conversion method can control the mesh directionality according to any desired vector fields, and the method can be used with any existing triangular mesh generators.

In this paper, we study the maximal property of the volume of the convex hull of d-dimensional independent random vectors. We show that the volume of the random convex hull from a multivariate location-scale family indexed by ${\Sigma}$ is stochastically maximized in simple stochastic order when ${\Sigma}$ is diagonal. The claim can be applied to a broad class of multivariate distributions that include skewed/unskewed multivariate t-distributions. We numerically investigate the proven stochastic relationship between the dependent and independent random convex hulls with the Gaussian random convex hull. The numerical results confirm our theoretical findings and the maximal property of the volume of the independent random convex hull.

A numerical analysis on three dimensional turbulent incompressible flows through linear cascades of turbine rotor blades with high turning angles has been performed by using a generalized k-.epsilon. model which is a high Reynolds number form and derived by RNG(renormalized group) method to account for the variation of the rate of strain. A second order upwind scheme is used to suppress numerical diffusion in approximating the convective terms. Body-fitted coordinates are adopted to represent the complex blade geometry accurately. For the case without tip clearance, velocity vectors and static pressure contours are shown to be in good agreement with previous experimental results. For the case with tip clearance, the effects of the passage vortex and tip clearance flow on the total pressure loss as well as their interactions are discussed.

Most graphical representation methods for two-dimensional contingency tables are based on the frequencies, probabilities, association measures, and goodness-of-fit statistics. In this work, a method is proposed to represent the correlation coefficients for each of the two selected levels of the row and column variables. Using the correlation coefficients, one can obtain the vector-matrix that represents the angle corresponding to each cell. Thus, these vectors are represented as a unit circle with angles. This is called a CC plot, which is a correlation plot for a contingency table. When the CC plot is used with other graphical methods as well as statistical models, more advanced analyses including the relationship among the cells of the row or column variables could be derived.

Satellite selection and exclusion techniques have been applied to the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) with the aim of achieving a balance between navigational performance and computational efficiency. Conventional approaches to satellite selection based on the best dilution of precision (DOP) are excessively computational and complicated. This paper proposes a new method that applies a geometric sensitivity index of individual GNSS satellites. The sensitivity index is derived using the inner product of the line of sight (LOS) vector of each satellite. First, the LOS vector is computed, which accounts for the geometry between the satellite and user positions. Second, the inner product of each pair of LOS vectors is calculated, which indicates the proximities of the satellites to one another. The proximity can be determined according to the sensitivity of each satellite. A post-processing test was conducted to verify the reliability of the proposed method. The proposed index and the results of a conventional approach that measures the dilution of precision (DOP) were compared. The test results demonstrate that the proposed index produces results that are within 96% of those of the conventional approach and reduces the computational burden. This index can be utilized to estimate the sensitivity of individual satellites, obtaining a navigation solution. Therefore, the proposed index applies to satellite selection and exclusion as well as to the sensitivity analyses of multiple GNSS applications.

In this paper, we propose new coding techniques for photometry data of three-dimensional(3-D) mesh models. We make a good use of geometry and connectivity information to improve coding efficiency of color, normal vector, and texture data. First of all, we determine the coding order of photometry data exploiting connectivity information. Then, we exploit the obtained geometry information of neighboring vortices through the previous process to predict the photometry data. For color coding, the predicted color of the current vertex is computed by a weighted sum of colors for adjacent vortices considering geometrical characteristics between the current vortex and the adjacent vortices at the geometry predictor. For normal vector coding, the normal vector of the current vertex is equal to one of the optimal plane produced by the optimal plane generator with distance equalizer owing to the property of an isosceles triangle. For texture coding, our proposed method removes discontinuity in the texture coordinates and reallocates texture image segments according to the coding order. Simulation results show that the proposed compression schemes provide improved performance over previous works for various 3-D mesh models.

A Vertex Shader is designed to show more 3D graphics expressions, and to increase flexibility of the fixed function T&L (Transform and Lighting) engine. Design of this Shader is based on Vertex Shader 1.1 of DirectX 8.1 and OpenGL ARB. The Vertex Shader consists of four floating point ALUs for vectors operation. The previous 32bits floating point data type is replaced to 24bits floating point data type in order to design the Vertex Shader that consume low-power and occupy small area. A Xilinx Virtex2 300M gate module is used to verify behaviour of the core. The result of Synopsys synthesis shows that the proposed Vertex Shader performs 115MHz speed at the TSMC 0.13um process and it can operate as the rate of 12.5M Polygons/sec. It shows the complexity of 110,000 gates in the same process.

In the present work, isogeometric analysis in linear elasticity problem is conducted using the basis functions from NURBS. The objectives of isogeometric analysis introduced is to integrate both geometric modeling(CAD) and computational analysis(CAE), and this can be accomplished from direct usage of geometric modeling by NURBS as the computational mesh. The merit of the isogeometry analysis is that NURBS surface are able to represent exact geometry from the control points and knot vectors, and also subsequent refinement is relatively simple relatively. In order to verify the computer codes developed in this study, it has been applied to two structural models of which geometry are simple ; 1) circular cylinder subjected to the constant internal pressure loading, 2) square plate with circular hole at center subjected to uniform tension. The exact solutions of these two models are available. Convergence of the approximate solutions by the present code for the isogeometry analysis are investigated by mesh refinement with inserting knots (h-refinement) and by mesh refinement with order elevation of the basis functions (p-refinement).
