  • Geological and electrical resistivity surveys along the survey line of about 3 km between Kyungsangbukdo Youngilgun Hodong and Gwangmyungdong using by dipole-dipole electrode array method were carried out to examine the boundary and structural relationship between Tertiary Pohang and Janggi basins. Electrical resistivity data were interpreted qualitatively and quantitatively by means of pseudosection of apparent electrical resitivity distribution and finite difference method for two dimensional geologic structure model. The nearly vertical fault zone with low electrical resistivity value of 1-5 Ohm-m and widths of about 200m at the surface and 400 m at depth exists around 1.2 km west of national road between Ocheoneup and Yangbukmyun. Mudrocks, sandstones and tuffaceous rocks are widely distributed with electrical resistivity values of 6-77 Ohm-m. Especially, tuffaceous rocks with relatively high electrical resistivity value are predominant at eastern side of fault zone. Consequently, it is known that Pohang and Janggi basins are in fault contact.

  • There is clear difference in content of the major and trace elements between Masan granites of Cu province and Yucheon-Eonyang granites of Pb-Zn province in the Yucheon Basin: the former has low content in K(2.08%), Na(2.42%) and Rb (127ppm), and high content in Ca(3.75%), Mg(1.42%) and Sr(304ppm) whereas the latter has high content in K(3.56-3.60%), Na(3.05-3.06%) and Rb(144-161ppm), and low content in Ca(0.62-0.96), Mg(0.21-0.26%) and Sr(136-157ppm). Ore metals in granites also show slight difference between two areas: Masan granites have slightly higher Cu content(18ppm) than Yucheon-Eonyang granites(13, 14ppm), whereas Yucheon granite(29ppm) has slightly higher Pb content than Masan granites(25ppm). Thus, it may be possible to apply geochemical difference of the granites to distinguish whether a Cretaceous granite mass is related to copper or lead-zinc mineralization, and whether it belongs Cu-province or Pb-Zn province in the Yucheon Basin.

  • Hydrogen depth profiling was performed by H(19F, $\alpha$${\gamma}$) nuclear resonance reactin . A cesium sputtering ion sorce and 1.7MV Tandem Van de Graaff accelerator was used for the production of 6.5MeV 19F ion. The ${\gamma}$ rays produced by the reaction were measure dby 3" $\times$3" and 6" $\times$8" Nal detectors . A test measurement was done for hydrogen contaminatin layer of a bare silicon wafer, Si3N4(H) and Zr(O)a-Si/Si for the purpose of verifying the applicability , detection limit and the reliability of the method.ility of the method.

  • Among the science and engineering fields in North Korean Academy of Sciences, geology occupies about 10 percent of the total number of departments. An analysis of major geologic research fields in North Korea, based on the number of authors of 2000-200l publications in a representative journal "Geology and Geography", shows the proportions as follows: mineralogy and petrology (31.0%), stratigraphy and paleontology (12.3%), economic geology and geochemistry (11.6%), geophysics and structural geology (14.2%), and applied geology (31.0%). This proportion is similar to that in South Korea in 1960s and shows that geologic research activity in North Korea is concentrated for the purpose of mineral resources exploration. The academic collaboration between South and North Korea in near future should include the researches on the reconstruction of geologic history in Korean peninsula and Northeast Asia and the environmental restoration from mining-related environmental pollution in North Korea. For active academic interchange between South and North Korea, efforts to overcome the academic gap are requisite. Frequent joint symposia, interchange programme of post-doctoral fellows, and cooperative researches on specific topics are recommended for this effort.

  • Since the mid-twentieth century, geology has gradually evolved as an interdisciplinary context in South Korea. The journal of Economic and Environmental Geology (EEG) has a long history of over 52 years and published interdisciplinary articles based on geology. In this study, we performed a literature review using topic modeling based on Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), an unsupervised machine learning model, to identify geological topics, historical trends (classic topics and emerging topics), and association by analyzing titles, keywords, and abstracts of 2,571 publications in EEG during 1968-2020. The results showed that 8 topics ('petrology and geochemistry', 'hydrology and hydrogeology', 'economic geology', 'volcanology', 'soil contaminant and remediation', 'general and structural geology', 'geophysics and geophysical exploration', and 'clay mineral') were identified in the EEG. Before 1994, classic topics ('economic geology', 'volcanology', and 'general and structure geology') were dominant research trends. After 1994, emerging topics ('hydrology and hydrogeology', 'soil contaminant and remediation', 'clay mineral') have arisen, and its portion has gradually increased. The result of association analysis showed that EEG tends to be more comprehensive based on 'economic geology'. Our results provide understanding of how geological research topics branch out and merge with other fields using a useful literature review tool for geological research in South Korea.

  • Sparker profiles and sediment cores collected from the Korea Strait show a distinct pattern of stacked prograding wedges consisting of three distinct units. These wedges are interpreted as the lowstand deposits formed during glacioeustatic sea-level lowstands. Repeated sea-level falls during late Pleistocene with high sediment discharge from the paleo-Nakdong River system resulted in the formation of thick lowstand wedges.
