  • Considering environmental issues and lack of space, it is a necessity to minimize the amount of excavation. Various types of excavation methods are being used in practice. This study proposes a reasonable method for estimating the earth pressure acting on a reinforced wall in front of a excavated slope. The measured data in the field and numerical analyses were used. Results of the study shows that the earth pressure acting on the excavated wall is less than that estimated by Rankine's equations. It was shown that when the excavated slope is used with the reinforced wall, the pressures acting on the reinforced wall can be greatly reduced.

  • Data provider and data user are linked together by suitable data. This implies that for a successful relationship the provider knows what kind of data, whether original or processed, is needed by the user and that the user articulates his needs to the provider. The co-operation between Korea and Austria aims at identifying these needs and to provide suitable routines for the processing of satellite data. Partners of this co-operation are the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, ARC Seibersdorf research and GeoVille. While the focus of the former lies in the development and running of satellite systems, the latter two have experience in the development and set up of applications in the field of remote sensing. Based on the complementary know-how by the institutions involved, projects were set up in Korea and Austria to fulfill this need and establish a pilot data feed for governmental applications.

  • Rice is one of the most important crop in the world and is a major export of Thailand. Optical sensors are not useful for rice monitoring, because most cultivated areas are often obscured by cloud during the growing period, especially in South East Asia. Spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) such as RADARSAT, can see through regardless of weather condition which make it possible to monitor rice growth and to retrieve rice acreage, using the unique temporal signature of rice fields. This paper presents the result of a study of examining the backscatter behavior of rice using multi-temporal RADARSAT dataset. Ground measurements of paddy parameters and water and soil condition were collected. The ground truth information was also used to identify mature rice crops, orchard, road, residence, and aquaculture ponds. Land use class distributions from the RADARSAT image were analyzed. Comparison of the mean DB of each land use class indicated significant differences. Schematic representation of temporal backscatter of rice crop were plotted. Based on the study carried out in Pathum Thani Province test site, the results showed variation of sigma naught from first tillering vegatative phase until ripenning phase. It is suggested that at least, three radar data acquisitions taken at 3 stages of rice growth circle namely; those are at the beginning of rice growth when the field is still covered with water, in the ear differentiation period, and at the beginning of the harvest season, are required for rice monitoring. This pilot project was an experimental one aiming at future operational rice monitoring and potential yield predicttion.

  • The low temperature and temperature difference (variation) may cause to deteriorate the integrity of tunnel constructed in cold region. An insulation material was developed and applied to the tunnel lining surface to keep the temperature of tunnel lining constant in spite of temperature variation at outdoor. The lining surface where the insulation material applied showed the less sensitive to temperature variation than non-applied lining surface.

  • In this study, the hazard areas are identified by using the Newmark displacement model, which is a predictive model for identifying the areas at risk of landslide triggered by earthquakes, based on the results of field survey and laboratory test, and literature data. The Newmark displacement model mainly utilizes earthquake and slope related data, and the safety of slope stability derived from LSMAP, which is a landslide prediction program. Backyang Mt. in Busan where the landslide has already occurred, was chosen as the study area of this research. As a result of this study, the area of landslide prone zone identified by using the Newmark displacement model without earthquake factor is about 1.15 times larger than that identified by using LSMAP.

  • In this paper, model experiments in the laboratory were carried out to predict the effluent concentrations of suspended solid in containment of dumping dredged soils and test results were compared with results estimated by the currently used design method. Model tests of simulating dumping the dredged soils with a pump dredger in field were performed with changing the influent concentration and the length of containment and effluent concentration of suspended solid with time were measured during tests. As results of comparing test results about effluent concentration with those estimated from the design method by US Army COE(1987), they were confirmed to be in relatively good agreements.

  • The missile early-warning satellite systems have been developed and upgraded by some space-developed nations, under the inevitable trend that the space is more strongly considered as another battle field than before. As the key function of such a satellite-based early warning system, the prediction algorithm of the missile flight trajectory is studied in the paper. In particular, the evolution computation, receiving broad attention in the artificial intelligence area, is applied to the proposed prediction method so that the global optimum-like solution is found avoiding disadvantage of the previous non-linear optimization search tools. Moreover, using the prediction simulator of the launch vehicle flight trajectory which is newly developed in C# and Python, the paper verifies the performance and the feature of the proposed algorithm.

  • The main problem with roads is that cracks and settlement occur over time due to loads acting from the surface layer. One way to solve this problem is to use Geocell. Geocell can be used for structural reinforcement for erosion prevention, ground stabilization on flat and steep slopes, load bearing, and ground preservation. In this study, analyzed road pavement application cases using Geocell and purpose of this study is to analyze the bearing capacity of a road paving method including Geocell using field tests and LFWD(Light Falling Weight Deflectometer) equipment. In addition, the bearing capacity was compared and analyzed with the existing traditional road pavement method.

  • In the construction site of underground buildings which have severe environment such as dust, noise, vibration, the technology of rescue the builders in the construction site when accident occurs by tracking the location of the builders and express the mission of supervisor smoothly. In this study, in order to acquire the location information of the builders in the construction site of underground buildings by using MEMS INS and air pressure sensor, we firstly performed the field test in construction site, analyzed the location and the elevation accuracy based on the detected results, and then verified its practicality and rationality after all. As a result, we could acquire worker's position-accuracy within 10m in horizontal direction and 4m in vertical direction. Therefore we could judge availability in construction fields of underground structure.

  • It is very important to determine the consolidation rate of ground, depending on the progress of time in applying this vertical drain method. Various consolidation analysis solutions capable of forecasting the consolidation rate are being proposed at the moment. However, the degree of consolidation measured from site, has a considerable different from the degree of consolidation which was obtained by the analysis of vertical drain consolidation. This study aims at assessing the applicability and verfication of each consolidation analysis solution by comparing and analyzing the degree of consolidation measured in the field and the degree of consolidation based on the theoretical equation for the analysis of the consolidation of Hansbo, Onoue, Zeng and Xie used as the consolidation analysis solution before the beginning of construction, on the basis of monitored field results and site investigation data as to the deep soft ground in Busan area applied by PBD method.
