  • This study is based on the problem that most middle school students cannot recognize the generality of geometrical theorems even after having proved them. By considering this problem from the point of view of empirical verification, the particularity of geometrical representations, and the role of geometrical variables, we suggest that some experiences in dynamic geometry environment (DGE) can help students to recognize the generality of geometrical theorems. That is, this study aims to observe students' cognitive changes related to their recognition of the generality and to provide some educational implications by making students experience some geometrical explorations in DGE. To do so, we selected three middle school students who couldn't recognize the generality of geometrical theorems although they completed their own proofs for the theorems. We provided them exploratory activities in DGE, and observed and analyzed their cognitive changes. Based on this analysis, we discussed the effects of DGE on studensts' recognition of the generality of geometrical theorems.

  • This study starts from the problem that although the solution premise the generality in algebra, a lot of students don't understand the generality of algebraic solution. We investigated this problem to understand cognitive characteristic of students. Moreover, we tried to find the elements which helping students understand the generality of algebraic solution. The purpose is to get the didactical implications. To do this, we had investigated the cognition of twenty middle school students for generality of solution. As result, 70 % of them didn't cognize the generality of solution. We had a personal interview with four students who showed a lack of sense of generality of algebraic solution. Putting into three action which we designed to help the change of their recognition, we observed and analyzed students cognizance change. Three action is the check of accordance for individual results, the check of solution accordance for different variables and the check of arbitrary variables. Based on the analysis, we discussed on the cognitive characteristic of students and the effect of three action. We finally discussed on the didactical implications to help students understand the generality of algebraic solution.

  • Algebra deals with so general properties about number system that it is called as 'generalized arithmetic'. Observing students' activities in algebra classes, however, we can discover that recognition of the generality in algebraic proofs is not so easy. One of these difficulties seems to be caused by variables which play an important role in algebraic proofs. Many studies show that students have experienced some difficulties in recognizing the meaning and the role of variables in algebraic proofs. For example, the confusion between 2m+2n=2(m+n) and 2n+2n=4n means that students misunderstand independent/dependent variation of variables. This misunderstanding naturally has effects on understanding of the meaning of proofs. Furthermore, students also have a difficulty in making a transition from algebraic proof to numerical cases which have the same structure as the proof. This study investigates whether middle school students can recognize dependent generality and make a transition from proofs to numerical cases. The result shows that the participants of this study have a difficulty in both of them. Based on the result, this study also includes didactical implications for teaching the generality of algebraic proofs.

  • Both 5.52 and 5.521 of the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus raise several questions. In this paper I will explicate Wittgenstein's concept of generality by answering such questions. These questions and problems are closely intertwined. I will try to show what follows. It is ${\xi}$-conditions that are most decisive on the concept of generality of the Tractatus. Except Ramsey, commentators such as Anscombe, Glock, Kenny etc. failed in accurately grasping the Wittgenstein's thoughts concerning ${\xi}$-condition and their claims are not fair at all. Futhermore, from a view point of history of logic, 5.52 has very important significances. That is to say, it anticipates for the first time a possibility of infinitary logic and the concept of universe of discourse in model theory.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the dispute over creativity domain at schools in Korea. In other words, this study is to examine the creativity domain among all subjects, a group of high level performance, and a group of low level performance in creativity. Based on ability-differentiation hypothesis, correlation among 4 domains, correlation between divergent thinking variables of domain-generality and 4 domains of domain-speciality, and multiple linear regression have been computed. The results are opposed to the hypothesis. The group of low level performance is related to domain-speciality. The group of high level performance, however, has relationships neither domain-generality nor domain-speciality. Instead of differentiation between domain-generality and domain-speciality, the results support the domain-complementarity.

  • To support an efficient management of software verification and validation activities, much research has been conducted to predict defects in early phase. And defect prediction models have been proposed to predict defects. But the generality of the models has not been experimentally studied for other software system. In other words, most of prediction models were applied only to the same system that had been used to build the prediction models themselves. Therefore, we performed an experiment to explore generality of major prediction models. In the experiment, we applied three defects prediction models to three different systems. As a result, we cannot find their generality of defect prediction capability. The cause is analyzed to result from a different metric distribution between the systems.

  • Inheritance reasoning has been widely used in the area of common sense reasoning in artificial intelligence. Although many inheritance reasoners have been proposed in artificial intelligence literature, most previous reasoning systems are lack of clear semantics, thus sometimes provide anomalous conclusions. In this paper, we describe a set-oriented inheritance reasoner and propose a method of resolving conflicts with clear semantics of defeasible rules. The semantics of default rule is provided by statistical analysis of $\chi$ method, and likelihood of rule is computed based on the evidence in the past. Two basic rules, specificity and generality, are defined to resolve conflicts effectively in the process of reasoning. We show that the mutual tradeoff between specificity and generality 추 prevent many anomalous results from occurring in traditional inheritance reasoners. An algorithm is provided. and some typical examples are given to show how the specificity/generality rules resolve conflicts effectively in inheritance reasoning.

  • Most of the metaheuristics are made by imitating the action of the animals. In this paper, we proposed Mine Algorithm. The Mine Algorithm is a metaheuristic that imitates the action of the human being. Speaking of search, the field in which the know-how and the heuristics of the human being are melted best is the mining industry. In the Mine Algorithm we formalize the action pattern of the human being by focusing the mine business. The Mine Algorithm uses various searching techniques fluently and shows equally good performance for broad problems. That is, it has good generality. We show the improved generality of the Mine Algorithm by the comparing experiments with the conventional metaheuristics.

  • Inductive power transfer (IPT) is an attractive power transmission solution that is already used in many applications. In the IPT system, optimal coil design is essential to achieve high power efficiency, but the effective design method is yet to be investigated. The inductance formula and finite element method (FEM) are popular means to link the coil geometric parameters and circuit parameters; however, the former lacks generality and accuracy, and the latter consumes much computation time. This study proposes a novel coil design method to achieve speed and generality without much loss of accuracy. By introducing one-turn permeance simulation in each FEM phase combined with curve fitting and optimization by MATLAB in the efficiency calculation phase, the iteration number of FEM can be considerably reduced, and the generality can be retained. The proposed method is verified through a 100 W IPT system experiment.

  • When existing parts are re-used for the development of a new product or business-to-business transactions, a method for searching parts from a part database that meets user's requirements is necessary. To this end, it is important to develop a part search method which is able to measure similarity between parts and user's input data with generality as well as robustness. In this paper, the authors suggest a method for measuring part similarity using ontology and multi-criteria decision making method and address its technical details. The proposed method ensures the interoperability with existing engineering information management systems, represents part specifications systematically, and has generality in the procedure for comparing part specifications. The case study for ejector pins having been conducted to demonstrate the proposed method is also discussed.
