Background and purpose : Stroke is a leading cause of death in Korea. Early measures to prevent stroke are extremely important since it has no cure. Korean might have different risk factors since their dietary habits and socio-economical status differ from most western countries. However, the risk factors for stroke in Korea have not yet been identified. Moreover, the lifestyle of healthy Korean adults has not been investigated. In this study we investigate the lifestyle of healthy adults living in Seoul and rural areas and compare the lifestyles of the two. Methods : One hundred seventy one subjects were studied. Among the subjects studied, 128 were from Seoul, the other 43 were from the country area. The age of the subjects was limited to over 40 years. Blood pressure, fast blood sugar, and cholesterol were measured. The subjects' height, weight, body mass index, total body fat, skinfolds thickness of triceps, subscapular and abdomen were measured to determine obesity. Using a structured interview, we assessed : sodium intake, physical activity and exercise, consumption of vegetables, fat, fish and fruits. The results of the two groups were compared. Results : There were no statistical differences in age and education between the two groups of subjects. The mean age of the subjects were 66 years old. The subjects residing in rural areas had a higher intake of sodium(p<0.05), lower physical activity(P<0.05), and higher BMI and body fat (p<0.05) as compared to the subjects in Seoul. Subjects with hypertension were between 24% and 33% and the prevalence of hypertension was the highest when compared to the prevalence of DM or hypercholesterolemia. However, the prevalence of hypertension, DM, hypercholesterolemia, were not significantly different in these areas. Conclusion : Our results show that subjects living in rural areas eat more salty food, exercise less, and tend to be obese. The finding of this study lead to speculation that Korean living in rural areas have less information about the effects of diet on health than city dwellers do. General health and nutrition education programs aimed at the prevention of stroke and other such conditions for rural area Koreans may close the risk factor gap between rural and urban dwellers.
Functional food for prevention of chronic diseases is one of this century's key global challenges. Cancer is not only the first or second leading cause of death in China and other countries across the world, but also has diet as one of the most important modifiable risk factors. Major dietary factors now known to promote cancer development are polished grain foods and low intake of fresh vegetables, with general importance for an unhealthy lifestyle and obesity. The strategies of cancer prevention in human being are increased consumption of functional foods like whole grains (brown rice, barley, and buckwheat) and by-products, as well some vegetables (bitter melon, garlic, onions, broccoli, and cabbage) and mushrooms (boletes and Tricholoma matsutake). In addition some beverages (green tea and coffee) may be protective. Southwest China (especially Yunnan Province) is a geographical area where functional crop production is closely related to the origins of human evolution with implications for anticancer influence.
This study was conducted to provide the baseline data for preparing an educational program for mothers of pediatric asthma patients by identifying the knowledge about asthma, mother's educational demand and the perceived educational performance. This study used survey design. The subjects were chosen from the mothers whose children have received pediatric asthma treatment or who have admitted in the pediatric unit of major hospitals using selection criteria. The total number of subjects were 63 mothers. The data collection period was from May 1st, 2001 to April 17th, 2001. Instruments used for this study were knowledge examination, educational demand evaluation, and educational performance. The data were analysed using t-test, ANOVA with SPSS PC(Version 10.0). The results of this study were as follows. 1. Mean score of knowledge about pediatric asthma was 17.95, which suggests the mothers of children with asthma have a medium knowledge level. The highest grade was knowledge about treatment and follow management and the lowest grade was knowledge about diet. 2. Demand for education showed 4.23, which suggests the mothers of children with asthma have high educational demand. The highest score was about exercise and activity in daily life and the lowest score was medication. 3. Perceived educational performance score of themselves showed 2.40, which suggests the mothers of children with asthma thought that health team do not give enough education to them. The highest score was knowledge about pediatric asthma itself and the lowest score was exercise and activity in daily life. 4. Demand for education and perceived educational performance about pediatric asthma showed significant difference in all areas. 5. There were no statistically significant difference noted between general characteristics and degree of knowledge, educational demand and perceived educational performance about pediatric asthma. In conclusion, there needed a systematic educational program development for the mothers of children with asthma. Especially, an education program for mothers in the beginning period of pediatric asthma should be emphasized.
Purpose: This descriptive survey was conducted to investigate out the utilization of alternative complementary remedies for stroke patients. Method: The subject for this study were 194 patients, selected from inpatients department of 11 major medical center at Busan and Ulsan. Data were collected from August 19th to November 12th, 2002 through interview schedule designed by the investigator. Data was analyzed with frequency, percentage, and ${\chi}^2$-test by using SPSS Win 10.0. Results: 71.6% of objects has used alternative complementary remedies. The use of alternative complementary remedies according to disease-related features was statistically significant in concurrent diseases(${\chi}^2=15.03$, p=0.001), rehabilitation treatment(${\chi}^2=6.341$, p=0.012) and the level of ADL(${\chi}^2=19.63$, p=0.000). The most frequently used therapies were diet and nutrition(31.8%). The patients with less than 3month onset and in the mid-period of treatment frequently used remedies. The reason for using remedies were the belief in it's effects on treatment, but most patients responded was not effective(30.9%) or not much improvement after using remedies. Most of the patients were recommended to use remedies by their neighbors(27.3%) and family members(25.2%). The family members were most supportive in therapy(56.1%). The 28.1% of patients responded that the remedies were effective in promoting blood circulation and 95% of the patients had not experienced side effects. Conclusion: These results could be the basic material in developing nursing intervention for cerebral apoplexy patients.
Objectives : Though Tsutsugamushi disease has been reported with increasing frequencies in rural communities in Korea, it is not easy to find the nursing investigations. Methods : We have conducted a survey on 30 cases who had the fever as a chief complaint, then clinically ruled out the Tsutsugamushi disease in autumn of $2000{\sim}2001$. Data were collected retrospectively by investigation of the general characteristics, clinical and laboratory findings, their nursing care. Findings: Of 30 cases, 46.7% were farmers, and 60.0% had chances of exposure to fields or mountains. The characteristic symptoms and signs were febrile sense and chill(100.0%), headache(80.0%), and eschar(66.7%). Abnormal laboratory findings were anemia (23.3%), elevated AST(60.6%), ALT(63.3%), and abnormal urinalysis findings(50.0%). 53.3% were serologically confirmed as Tsutsugamushi disease. Therapeutic nursing cares were composed with warm up by blancket(50.0%), Ice bag(50.0%) and doxycycline antibiotic therapy(100.0%). Other nursing care for them included fluid therapy(100.0%) and nutritional support with regular(56.7%) or soft diet(43.3%). Conclusion: The above results indicate nurses who take care of acute febrile clients should make her responsible for the fever and pain management as well as give education for infection control for the community inhabitants.
Marine microalgae are a key diet component in finfish and shellfish aquaculture. Cryopreservation of the microalgae is suggested by many other studies as the best method for long-term storage. To test cryopreservation efficacy, 19 taxas of marine microalgal species were examined. In the first experiment we compared dimethylsulfoxide ($Me_2SO$) and glycerol, which are most widely used as cryoprotectant agents (CPAs). The cryopreservation comprised two freezing procedures. Firstly, the samples containing the CPAs were kept at $4^{\circ}C$ for 10 min before being plunged into liquid nitrogen ($-196^{\circ}C$). Secondly, samples containing CPAs were pre-cooled ($-1^{\circ}C$$min^{-1}$ to $-80^{\circ}C$ before being plunged into liquid nitrogen. Most of the species were successfully cryopreserved using $Me_2SO$, whereas the Prasinophyceae (T. striata and T. suecica) were successfully cryopreserved using glycerol. In general, the cooling method had no influence on the survival of the microalgae except in the case of the Tetraselmis species. In the second experiment, the cultured solution was divided before cryopreservation into concentrated and non-concentrated groups to identify the effect of cell density during cryopreservation. After 12 months of storage, the samples were again divided into centrifugation and non-centrifugation groups to learn the effect of $Me_2SO$ on the culture. Viability and growth of the microalgae were not influenced by cell density or the centrifugal removal of the $Me_2SO$ after thawing.

Ji-San, the founder of HyungSang medicine, emphasized food intake and detoxification by stating, "Korean medicine begins with detoxification." Toxin accumulates in one's body unless the internal and external conditions stay in their harmony. The accumulation of toxin is also caused by western medication or one-sided diet, and detoxification should be considered in those cases. HwangRyunHaeDok-Tang reduces fire and heat, and the lesion is likely to locate in the upper body. BangPoongTongSung-San can be used for systemic disease. IkWoon-San also reduces fire and heat but mainly focuses on promoting urination. InSamPaeDok-San has an effect of curing the external symptoms of SangHan(傷寒), in addition to detoxification. SeoGakJiHwang-Tang, SoDok-Eum, and SeoGakSoDok-Eum can resolve the heat-toxin when it is located on the surface. SibJeonDaeBo-Tang enhances the detoxifying function of human body. GhamDu-Tang and JaGeum-Jung have a general effect on detoxification.
This study is intended to research workers' health, diet and the demand of nutrition education service in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do province. We implemented the survey from September 2012 through August 2013, and analyzed the data from 589 workers' questionnaires out of 890. For the analysis of the compiled data, we utilized the SPSS version 18.0 statistical package program. The study showed that majority of the workers participated in the survey consisted of 447 male (75.9%) and 142 female (24.1%). BMI showed that these men were overweight ($24.5{\pm}2.72$) and women were normal weight ($22.2{\pm}2.70$). Participants often diagnosed with hypertension or hyperlipidemia. In terms of health status, 34.5% answered satisfactory, the most concerned illness was high blood pressure, and the bad eating habits were often associated with general overeating and excessive intake of salt. 65.5% of participants had a meal three times per day. 49.4% of male participants had a meal less than 15 minutes and 66.2% of female participants had a meal between 15 and 30 minutes. The average of workers who needed to nutrition education is 3.74+0.85. The most desired way of learning was through counseling (36.7%), with overweight and weight management identified as the most interested topics. A relatively high portion (80%) passed the nutrition knowledge assessment test. According to the survey the highest rate of full-time employment is 85.2% which showed in small work places (the number of people on meal plan was 100~300), however the lowest rate of full-time employment showed 70.0% in large workplaces (the number of people on meal plan was within 1,000).
Ninety nursery pigs were used in two metabolism experiments to determine the effects of roasting and extruding on the nutritional value of Williams 82 soybeans with (+K) and without (-K) gene expression for the Kunitz trypsin inhibitor. Treatments for both experiments were: 1) soybean meal; 2) +K roasted; 3) +K extruded; 4) -K roasted; and 5) -K extruded. Diets were the soybean preparations (96.5% of the diet) with only vitamins and minerals added as needed to meet or exceed NRC recommendations. Daily feed allowance was 5% of initial BW given as three equal meals. In Exp. 1, 50 weanling pigs (4.7 kg average BW and 21 d average age) were used. Apparent values for N digestibility (p<0.001), biological value (p<0.09), percentage N retention (p<0.05), GE digestibility (p<0.001) and percentage ME (p<0.001) were greater for pigs fed extruded soybeans than pigs fed roasted soybeans. Also, N digestibility (p<0.05), biological value (p<0.03) and percentage N retention (p<0.04) were greater for pigs fed -K soybeans than those fed +K soybeans. In Exp. 2, 40 pigs (9.7 kg average BW and 35 d average age) were allowed to adjust to the nursery environment before use in the experiment. In general, the pigs in Exp. 2 (i.e., the older pigs) had greater utilization of nutrients from all of the soybean products than the younger pigs used in Exp. 1. Digestibilities of DM, N and GE were greater (p<0.001) for pigs fed -K soybeans than those fed +K soybeans and extruded soybeans had greater digestibilities of DM, N and GE than roasted soybeans (p<0.001). Also, percentage N retention (p<0.01) and percentage ME (p<0.001) for pigs fed extruded soybeans were greater than for pigs fed roasted soybeans. In conclusion, extruded and -K soybeans were greater nutritional value than roasted and +K soybeans for 4.7 and 9.7 kg nursery pigs.
Sixteen specific pathogen free 4-wk-old crossbred weanling pigs were allotted into a $2{\times}2$ factorial design to evaluate chromium picolinate (CrPic) on growth and physiological responses. Two factors included (1) no Cr or 400 ppb Cr supplementation from chromium picolinate and (2) lipopolysaccharide (LPS) injection on day 21 (d 21) and 35 (d 35) compared to saline application. Plasma samples and rectal temperature were obtained from all piglets before (h 0) and at 2 h (h 2), 4 h (h 4), 8 h (h 8), and 24 h (h 24) after LPS injection ($200{\mu}g/kg$ BW, intraperitoneally). The rectal temperature on d 21 was significantly decreased (p<0.05) of about $0.36^{\circ}C$ with Cr supplementation before LPS injection. After LPS injection, the daily gain of piglets was decreased during d 35-38. Supplementation of Cr had no effect in general on growth performance particularly after LPS injection. The plasma glucose, triglycerides and urea nitrogen concentrations were changed in different ways after LPS injection. Plasma cortisol level was significantly elevated at h 2 after LPS injection on d 21 and d 35. The supplementation of Cr in the diet can delayed plasma cortisol release on d 35. The results suggest that 400 ppb Cr supplementation from CrPic may modulate the physiological response during immune stress in weanling pigs.
