고압 수소 가스 하 인장 시험을 이용한 두 오스테나이트계 고망간강의 수소취화 특성 평가 (Hydrogen Embrittlement of Two Austenitic High-Manganese Steels Using Tensile Testing under High-Pressure Gaseous Hydrogen)

  • The hydrogen embrittlement of two austenitic high-manganese steels was investigated using tensile testing under high-pressure gaseous hydrogen. The test results were compared with those of different kinds of austenitic alloys containing Ni, Mn, and N in terms of stress and ductility. It was found that the ultimate tensile stress and ductility were more remarkably decreased under high-pressure gaseous hydrogen than under high-pressure gaseous argon, unlike the yield stress. In the specimens tested under high-pressure gaseous hydrogen, transgranular fractures were usually observed together with intergranular cracking near the fracture surface, whereas in those samples tested under high-pressure gaseous argon, ductile fractures mostly occurred. The austenitic high-manganese steels showed a relatively lower resistance to hydrogen embrittlement than did those with larger amounts of Ni because the formation of deformation twins or microbands in austenitic high-manganese steels probably promoted planar slip, which is associated with localized deformation due to gaseous hydrogen.

  • This study conducted direct numerical simulations of the natural convection phenomena of gaseous hydrogen in a physical storage container containing four circular cylinders. Rayleigh numbers (Ra) in the range of 104≤Ra≤106 and a Prandtl number (Pr)=0.69 (gaseous hydrogen) were considered. The main parameter is a horizontal distance of four circular cylinders and the values of εh=0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 are considered. The flow and thermal structures and corresponding heat transfer characteristics are investigated with respect to the transition of the flow regime. The time- and surface-averaged Nusselt number on the cylinder surface and the wall of physical storage container increased by about 57% and 69% according to the Ra and εh, respectively. Thus, the horizontal distance has an influence on the heat transfer characteristics on natural convection of gaseous hydrogen.

  • In this study, hydrogen embrittlement (HE) behavior of a SA-723 steel via controlling gaseous hydrogen pre-charging condition has been analyzed. The gaseous hydrogen charging of the SA-723 steel was performed under a constant pressure of 20 MPa of gaseous H2 at 150℃ and 300℃ for 2 and 6h, and TDS, SSRT and Charpy tests were conducted to analyze the hydrogen embrittlement (HE) behavior of the SA-723 steel. Furthermore, prior to commencing the test, these specimens were coated with Zn to prevent hydrogen from diffusing out of a specimen during the tests. The TDS results showed that the 300℃-6h and 150℃-6h charged steels contain larger amounts of hydrogen than 300℃-2h and 150℃-2h charged steel. The SSRT and Charpy test results also showed the similar trends that the mechanical properties of the steels deteriorate as the amount of hydrogen charged in the steel increases. Therefore, this study suggests that, for SA-723 steel, the charging time parameter is more effective to charge more amount of hydrogen into SA-723 steel, rather than the charging temperature.

  • Hydrogen is currently produced from natural gas reforming or industrial process of by-product over than 90%. Additionally, there are green hydrogens based on renewable energy generation, but the import of green hydrogen from other countries is being considered due to the output variability depending on the weather and climate. Due to low density of hydrogen, it is difficult to storage and import hydrogen of large capacity. For improving low density issue of hydrogen, the gaseous hydrogen is liquefied and stored in cryogenic tank. Density of hydrogen increase from 0.081 kg/m3 to 71 kg/m3 when gaseous hydrogen transfer to liquid hydrogen. Density of liquid hydrogen is higher about 800 times than gaseous. However, since density and boiling point of liquid hydrogen is too lower than liquefied natural gas approximately 1/6 and 90 K, to store liquid hydrogen for long-term is very difficult too. To overcome this weakness, this paper introduces storage method of hydrogen based on liquid/solid (slush) and facilities for producing slush hydrogen to improve low density issue of hydrogen. Slush hydrogen is higher density and heat capacity than liquid hydrogen, can be expected to improve these issues.

밀폐형 돈사 작업장의 전체 환기율이 가스상 오염물질 노출 농도 변화에 미치는 영향 (Effect of General Ventilation Rate on Concentrations of Gaseous Pollutants Emitted from Enclosed Pig Building)

  • Objectives: The principal aim of this study was to compare the concentrations of gaseous pollutants emitted in enclosed pig buildings between different rates of general ventilation and determine the variations in the patterns of gaseous pollutants as affected by ventilation rate. Materials and Methods: The experiment was performed in the growing/finishing room($20.0m{\times}12.0m{\times}3.0m$) of a pig confinement building located on the experimental farm of Seoul National University. The conditions of the general ventilation rate for three treatments were 30%($4.12m^3s^{-1}$), 50%($6.87m^3s^{-1}$) and 70%($9.61m^3s^{-1}$). The data presented in the study were collected overa total of 45 days, 15 days for each of the three treatments from March to May 2011. A total of six air samplings were taken at 1.5m above the floor of the pig building. The environmental agents measured in the pig building were ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and odor concentration index for gaseous pollutants with temperature and hydrogen sulfide for thermal factors. Results: There were significant differences in the ammonia and odor concentration index in the pig building among the three general ventilation rate conditions(p<0.05), whereas hydrogen sulfide did not show a significant difference among three conditions of general ventilation rate(p>0.05). As the general ventilation rate applied to the pig building increases, it appears that all the indoor environmental agents measured in this study simultaneously decrease. Conclusions: The gaseous pollutants significantly affected by the general ventilation rate in pig building were ammonia and odor concentration index(p<0.05). However, it was found that hydrogen sulfide and thermal factors, temperature and relative humidity were not influenced significantly by variation in the general ventilation rate.

  • Significant real fluid behaviors including rapid property changes take place where high pressure combustion devices such as rocket engines. The flamelet model is the reliable approach to account for the real fluid effects. In the present study, the flamelet equations are extended to treat the general fluids over transcritical and supercritical states. The real fluid flamelet model is carried out for the gaseous hydrogen and cryogenic liquid oxygen flames at the wide range of thermodynamic conditions. Based on numerical results, the precise discussions are made for effects of real fluid, pressure, and differential diffusion on the local flame structure.

  • Breakthrough analysis has widely been explored for the dynamic separation of gaseous mixtures in porous materials. In general, breakthrough experiments measure the components of a flowing gas when a gaseous mixture is injected into a column filled with an adsorbent material. In this paper, we report on the design and fabrication of a breakthrough curve measurement device to study the dynamic adsorptive separation of hydrogen isotopologues in porous materials. Using the designed system, an experiment was conducted involving a 1:1 mixture of hydrogen and deuterium passed through a column filled with zeolite 13X (1 g). At room temperature, both hydrogen and deuterium were adsorbed in negligible amounts; however, at a temperature of 77 K, deuterium was preferentially adsorbed over hydrogen. The selectivity was different from that in the existing literature due to the different sample shapes, measurement methods, and column structures, but was at a similar level to that of cryogenic distillation (1.5).

  • Hydrogen is an eco-friendly energy source and is being actively researched in various fields around the world, including mobility and aerospace. In order to effectively utilize hydrogen energy, it should be used in a liquid state with high energy storage density, but when hydrogen is stored in a liquid state, BOG (boil-off gas) is generated due to the temperature difference with the atmosphere. This should be re-condensed when considering storage efficiency and economy. In particular, large-capacity liquid hydrogen storage tank is required a gaseous helium circulation cooling system that cools by circulating cryogenic refrigerant due to the increase in heat intrusion from external air as the heat transfer area increases and the wide distribution of the gas layer inside the tank. In order to effectively apply the system, thermo-hydraulic analysis through process analysis is required. In this study, the condenser design and system characteristics of a gaseous helium circulation cooling system for BOG recondensation of a liquefied hydrogen storage tank were compared.

Nonlinear Acoustic-Pressure Responses of Oxygen Droplet Flames Burning in Gaseous Hydrogen

  • A nonlinear acoustic instability of subcritical liquid-oxygen droplet flames burning in gaseous hydrogen environment are investigated numerically. Emphases are focused on the effects of finite-rate kinetics by employing a detailed hydrogen-oxygen chemistry and of the phase change of liquid oxygen. Results show that if nonlinear harmonic pressure oscillations are imposed, larger flame responses occur during the period that the pressure passes its temporal minimum, at which point flames are closer to extinction condition. Consequently, the flame response function, normalized during one cycle of pressure oscillation, increases nonlinearly with the amplitude of pressure perturbation. This nonlinear response behavior can be explained as a possible mechanism to produce the threshold phenomena for acoustic instability, often observed during rocket-engine tests.

공기과잉률의 변화가 에탄올 및 수소농후가스 혼합연료 기관의 배기 특성에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of the Excess Air Factor on the Emission Characteristics of the SI Engine Fueled with Gasoline-Ethanol and Hydrogen Enriched Gas)

  • Trends in the automotive market require the application of new engine technologies, which allows for the use of different types of fuel. Since ethanol is a renewable source of energy and has lower $CO_2$ emissions than gasoline, ethanol produced from biomass is expected to be used more frequently as an alternative fuel. It is recognized that for spark ignition (SI) engines, ethanol has the advantages of high octane number and high combustion speed. Due to the disadvantages of ethanol, it may cause extra wear and corrosion of electric fuel pumps. On-board hydrogen production out of ethanol is an alternative plan. This paper investigates the influence of ethanol fuel on SI engine performance, thermal efficiency and emissions. The combustion characteristics with hydrogen-enriched gaseous fuel from ethanol are also examined. As a result, thermal efficiency increase compared to gasoline. Also, reductions in $CO_2$, NOx, and THC combustion products for ethanol vs. gasoline are described.
