The effects of a Ni coating on the sensing properties of nano ZnO:Ni based gas sensors were studied for $CH_4$ and $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gases. Nano ZnO sensing materials were prepared by the hydrothermal reaction method. The Ni coatings on the nano ZnO surface were deposited by the hydrolysis of zinc chloride with $NH_4OH$. The weight % of Ni coating on the ZnO surface ranged from 0 to 10 %. The nano ZnO:Ni gas sensors were fabricated by a screen printing method on alumina substrates. The structural and morphological properties of the nano ZnO : Ni sensing materials were investigated by XRD, EDS, and SEM. The XRD patterns showed that nano ZnO : Ni powders with a wurtzite structure were grown with (1 0 0), (0 0 2), and (1 0 1) dominant peaks. The particle size of nano ZnO powders was about 250 nm. The sensitivity of nano ZnO:Ni based sensors for 5 ppm $CH_4$ gas and $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gas was measured at room temperature by comparing the resistance in air with that in target gases. The highest sensitivity of the ZnO:Ni sensor to $CH_4$ gas and $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gas was observed at Ni 4 wt%. The response and recovery times of 4 wt% Ni coated ZnO:Ni gas sensors were 14 s and 15 s, respectively.
We present an easy method of preparing two-dimensional (2D) periodic hollow tin oxide ($SnO_2$) hemisphere array gas sensors using polystyrene (PS) spheres as a template. The structures were fabricated by the sputter deposition of thin tin (Sn) metal over an array of PS spheres on a planar substrate followed by calcination at an elevated temperature to oxidize Sn to $SnO_2$ while removing the PS template cores. The $SnO_2$ hemisphere array structures were examined by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The structures were calcined at various temperatures and their sensing properties were examined with varying operation temperatures and concentrations of nitric oxide (NO) gas. Their gas-sensing properties were investigated by measuring the electrical resistances in air and the target gases. The measurements were conducted at different NO concentrations and substrate temperatures. A minimum detection limit of 30 ppb, showing a sensitivity of S = 1.6, was observed for NO gas at an operation temperature of $150^{\circ}C$ for a sample having an Sn metal layer thickness corresponding to 30 sec sputtering time and calcined at $600^{\circ}C$ for 2 hr in air. We proved that high porosity in a hollow $SnO_2$ hemisphere structure allows easy diffusion of the target gas molecules. The results confirm that a 2D hollow $SnO_2$ hemisphere array structure of micronmeter sizes can be a good structural morphology for high sensitivity gas sensors.
ZnO nanorod gas sensors were prepared by an ultrasound radiation method and their gas sensing properties were investigated for NO gas. For this procedure, 0.01, 0.005 and 0.001M of zinc nitrate hydrate [$Zn(NO_3)_2\;{\cdot}\;6H_2O$] and hexamethyleneteramine [$C_6H_{12}N_4$] aqueous solutions were prepared and then the solution was irradiated with high intensity ultrasound for 1 h. The lengths of ZnO nanorods ranged from 200 nm to 500 nm with diameters ranging from 40 nm to 80 nm. The size of the ZnO nanorods could be controlled by the concentration of solution. The sensing characteristics of these nanostructures were investigated for three kinds of sensor. The properties of the sensors were influenced by the morphology of the nanorods.
In the recognition of the gases using the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) coated with the film materials, it is important to obtain the recognition ability of gases, and the stability of film coated above the QCM. Especially, the thickness of film coated above the QCM is decreased according with the using circumstance and time of QCM gas sensor. Therefore, the sensing characteristics of film is changed with these. In this paper, we coated the lipid PC (Phosphatidyl Choline) materials varing with the blended amount of PVC(Poly Vinyl Chloride) and solution (Tetra Hydrofan:THF) above QCM to obtain the sensitive and the stability of lipid PC film. QCM gas sensors coated with film materials were measured the frequency change in the chamber of stationary gas sensing system injected 1-hexane, ethyl acetate, ethanol and benzene of $20{\mu}{\ell}$, respectively. We also measured the degradation characteristics of QCM gas sensor to show the properties of stability.
$MoO_3$ thin films were deposited on electrode and heater screen-printed alumina substrates in $O_2$ atmosphere by RF reactive sputtering using Molybdenum metal target. The deposition was performed at $300^{\circ}C$ with 350W of a forward power in an $Ar-O_2$ atmosphere. The working pressure was maintained at $3{\times}10^{-2}mtorr$ and all deposited films were annealed at $500^{\circ}C$ for 5hours. To investigate gas sensing characteristics of the addition doped $MoO_3$ thin film, Co, Ni and Pt were used as adding dopants. The sensing properties were investigated in tenn of gas concentration under exposure of reducing gases such as $H_2$, $NH_3$ and CO at optimum working temperature. Co-doped $MoO_3$ thin film shows the maximum 46.8% of sensitivity in $NH_3$ and Ni-doped $MoO_3$ thin film exhibits 49.7% of sensitivity in $H_2$.
MoO$_3$thin films were deposited on electrode of alumina substrates in $O_2$atmosphere by RF reactive sputtering using molybdenum metal target. The deposition was performed at 30$0^{\circ}C$ with 350 W of a forward power in an Ar-O$_2$atmosphere. The working pressure was maintained at 3$\times$10$^{-2}$ torr and all deposited films were annealed at 50$0^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours. The surface morphology of films was observed by using a SEM and crystalline phases were analyzed by using a XRD. To investigate gas sensing characteristics of the doped MoO$_3$thin film, Co, Ni and Pt were used as dopants. The sensing properties were investigated in term of gas concentration under exposure of reducing gases such as H$_2$, NH$_3$and CO at optimum working temperature. Co-doped MoO3 thin film shows the maximum 46.8 % of sensitivity in NH$_3$ and Ni-doped MoO$_3$thin film exhibits 49.7 % of sensitivity in H$_2$.
Nanosized $SnO_2$ particles were synthesized by homogeneous precipitation method using tin chloride ($SnCl_4{\cdot}5H_{2}O$) and urea ($CO(NH_2)_2$). The powders were heated at $500^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$ for 2h. The crystal structure, microstructure, thermal behavior, specific surface area were analyzed using XRD, FE-SEM, TGA and BET, respectively. The initial resistance and the $H_2$ sensing properties were measured as a function of ${Sb_2}{O_3}$ and Pd doping concentrations. The resistance was decreased with the addition of ${Sb_2}{O_3}$ and the sensitivity for $H_2$ gas was increased with the addition of Pd. Thus, the optimum $H_2$ gas sensing property was obtained in the 0.25.mol% ${Sb_2}{O_3}$ and 1.w% added $SnO_2$ powders.
In this paper, we report the sensing performance of H2 gas sensors composed of Pd/carbon nanotube (CNT) buckypaper at room temperature. The CNT buckypaper was made using a simple filtration process and subsequently deposited with Pd as the sensing material. The sensitivity of the sensor increased with respect to the gas concentration. To investigate the effect of Pd thickness, Pd layers of different thickness were deposited on the buckypaper, and the response of the sensor was evaluated. The proposed sensor exhibits excellent sensing properties with optimized Pd thickness at room temperature (25℃). Pd nanoparticles significantly impact the sensitivity and selectivity of the sensor because of the spillover effect. In addition, the sensor is highly suitable for bendable and wearable devices owing to its structural flexibility.
$Au@TiO_2$ core-shell decorated rGO nanocomposite (NC) was prepared using a simple solvothermal method followed by heat treatment for gas sensor application. The crystal structure and morphology of the composites were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. The $NO_2$ sensing response of the $Au@TiO_2/rGO$ NC was tested at operating temperatures from $250^{\circ}C$ to $500^{\circ}C$, and was compared with those of the bare rGO and $Au@TiO_2$ core-shell NPs. The $Au@TiO_2/rGO$ NC-based sensor showed a far higher response than the rGO or $Au@TiO_2$ core-shell based sensors, with the maximum response detected when the operating temperature was $400^{\circ}C$. This improved response was due to the high rGO gas absorption capability for $NO_2$ gas and the catalytic effect of $Au@TiO_2$ core-shell NPs in oxidizing $NO_2$ to $NO_3$.
Breath analysis is rapidly evolving as a non-invasive disease recognition and diagnosis method. Metal oxide gas sensors are one of the most ideal platforms for realizing portable, hand-held breath analysis devices in the near future. This paper reviewed the recent developments in metal oxide gas sensors detecting exhaled biomarker gases such as nitric oxides, acetone, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and hydrocarbons. Emphasis was placed on strategies to tailor sensing materials/films capable of highly selective and sensitive detection of biomarker gases with negligible cross-response to ethanol, the major interfering breath gas. Specific examples were given to highlight the validity of the strategies, which include optimization of sensing temperature, doping additives, utilizing acid-base interaction, loading catalysts, and controlling gas reforming reaction. In addition, we briefly discussed the design and optimization method of gas sensor arrays for implementing the simultaneous assessment of multiple diseases. Breath analysis using high-performance metal oxide gas sensors/arrays will open new roads for point-of-care diagnosis of diseases such as asthma, diabetes, kidney dysfunction, halitosis, and lung cancer.
