  • The propose of this study is to survey the revetments installed in Gangwon Province for identifying their characteristics. The survey showed that in eastern Gangwon Province, gabion, retaining wall and concrete blocks took about 63% or more, and in western Gangwon Province, dry wall, gabion and retaining wall, 68% or more. Gabion and dry wall had better vegetation coverage in western Gangwon Province than in eastern Gangwon Province. That is thought to be due to slope of river and under-water frequency.

  • This paper focuses on the attempt to manual application for optimization structural scale of stone and Gabion at the closing gap of sea dike. The manual was developed through hydraulic model experiment that measured the critical velocity of sill-crest, bottom protection and dam-face at the final closure of Saemangeum sea dike, and through the comparison and verification of critical velocity for each scale calculated by existing empirical formula. Also, the critical velocity when rocks are used together with gabion is measured to add to the manual, which is an initial attempt that had not been executed before. The manual proposes the appropriate structural scale according to the measured critical velocity per day during the final closure period of Saemangeum sea dike, and its application was appraised highly after the completion of the final closing.

  • This study was conducted to characterize shearing strength of geotextile bag, connecting materials and gabion. A largescale shaking take tests were conducted to assess kinetic characteristics of gabion-geotextile bag retaining wall. Based on the results of large-scale shaking table test, dynamic characteristics of gabion-geotextile bag retaining wall structure against acceleration, displacement, and earth pressure were also analyzed. The increments of dynamic active earth pressure were determined to be (0.376-0.377)H at 1:0.3 slope and $(0.154-0.44)g_n$ earthquake acceleration, and (0.389-0.393)H at 1:1 slope, suggesting that the increments tend to rise as the slope decreases.

  • Number of coastal protection structures have been increased rapidly due to rising sea levels and deteriorated sea conditions. Coastal structures should be designed to meet coastal engineering requirements and ecosystem conditions, while they are not lost or removed. In this study, trapezoidal gabion block was developed for the purpose, and two-dimensional laboratory experiments were conducted to validate applicability of the block. The experiments were carried out with eight types of erosive and accretive wave conditions. As a result, it was confirmed that the gabion blocks have a feature of preventing erosion of beach. The newly designed gabion blocks could be an alternative as a countermeasure method for beach erosion.

  • Recently, oystershell wastes cause serious environmental problem and the need for the researches on the recycling of oystershell have been increased and various methods are already in operation. Field plate bearing tests and numerical analysis were performed to investigate the bearing capacity of oystershell filled geotextile gabion which utilized the waste oystershell at the coastal oyster farm site. The waste oystershell mixed soil specimens were prepared for the laboratory test and field test in terms of varying blending ratio of granite soil and oystershell. Based on the cyclic plate load test results, the spring constant, subgrade modulus of ground, and the reinforcing parameters were determined. The field plate load test results indicate that the bearing capacity of the soil ground with the oystershell mixed ratio of 20% is greater than that of the original ground. Two-dimensional numerical analysis was evaluated the expected deformation in the given conditions. Analysis results show a similar characteristics on bearing capacity with the results of the field plate load test. These findings suggest that the oystershells are very promising construction materials for landfill and earth embankment in coastal area.

  • The fishways at Namdae-cheon and Osib-cheon were investigated from July 1998 through October 1999. There are three types of fishways on these rivers. those are baffied fishway, fish ladder, and fish ladder with gabion. Namdae-cheon has 7 baffled fishways and 19 fish ladders, and Osib-cheon has 7 gabion fishways. On namdae-cheon, 1,775 fishes of 24 species were collected. Among these fishes, 452 fishes of 11 species were anadromous fishes occupying 46% in species and 25% in number. On Osib-cheon, 1,953 fishes of 24 species were collected. Among these fishes, 483 fishes of 5 species were anadromous fishes occupying 21% in species and 25% in number. On Namdae-cheon the species number and abundance decreased gradually upstream. The poor structure of fishways seems to have worked as an obstacle to the upstream migration of fishes in the Namdae-cheon . On Osib-cheon all the observed fish species except three-spined stickleback(Gasterosteus aculeatus aculeatus) which stay and spawn around downstream of fiver could migrate upstream. The good structure of fishways on this river is thought to have helped upstream fish migration.
