  • Significant research efforts were undertaken to evaluate seismic performance of vertically irregular buildings on flat ground. However, there is scarcity of study on seismic performance of buildings on hill slopes. The present study attempts to investigate seismic behaviour of reinforced concrete irregular stepback building frames with different configurations on sloping ground. Based on extensive regression study of free vibration results of four hundred seventeen frames with varying ground slope, number of story and span number, a modification is proposed to the code based empirical fundamental time period estimation formula. The modification to the fundamental time period estimation formula is a simplified function of ground slope and a newly introduced equivalent height parameter to reflect the effect of stiffness and mass irregularity. The derived empirical formula is successfully validated with various combinations of slope and framing configurations of buildings. The correlation between the predicted and the actual time period obtained from the free vibration analysis results are in good agreement. The various statistical parameters e.g., the root mean square error, coefficient of determination, standard average error generally used for validation of such regression equations also ensure the prediction capability of the proposed empirical relation with reasonable accuracy.

  • Many building codes use the empirical equation to determine fundamental period of vibration where in effect of length, width and the stiffness of the building is not explicitly accounted for. In the present study, ANN models are developed in three categories, varying the number of input parameters in each category. Input parameters are chosen to represent mass, stiffness and geometry of the buildings indirectly. Total numbers of 206 buildings are analyzed out of which, data set of 142 buildings is used to develop these models. It is demonstrated through developed ANN models that geometry of the building and the sizes of the columns are significant parameters in the dynamic analysis of building frames. The testing dataset of these three models is used to obtain the empirical relationship between the height of the building and fundamental period of vibration and compared with the similar equations proposed by other researchers. Experiments are conducted on Mild Steel frames using uniaxial shake table. It is seen that the values obtained through the ANN models are close to the experimental values. The validity of ANN technique is verified by experimental values.

  • Hook bolt brace is being used to construct pre-engineered building's (PEB) systematic frames in steel factory building, but they pose difficulties in terms of their structural performance. There are also few studies on their behavior and there is a need to develop elementary techniques by conducting loading tests on other types of braces (e.g., rod bar, rod shoe, angle), which is used in Japan and the USA. Its structural performance is compared with that of current hook bolt-type brace. Therefore, in this study, we present a basic step in the structural performance of these specimens to examine its performance qualitatively and theof application to PEB frames.

  • Conventional rate control (RC) schemes for H.264 video coding usually regulate output bit rate to match channel bandwidth by adjusting quantization parameter (QP) at fixed full frame rate, and the passive frame skipping to avoid buffer overflow usually occurs when scene changes or high motions exist in video sequences especially at low bit rate, which degrades spatial-temporal quality and causes jerky effect. In this paper, an active content adaptive frame skipping scheme is proposed instead of passive methods, which skips subjectively trivial frames by structural similarity (SSIM) measurement between the original frame and the interpolated frame via motion vector (MV) copy scheme. The saved bits from skipped frames are allocated to coded key ones to enhance their spatial quality, and the skipped frames are well recovered based on MV copy scheme from adjacent key ones at the decoder side to maintain constant frame rate. Experimental results show that the proposed active SSIM-based frameskip scheme acquires better and more consistent spatial-temporal quality both in objective (PSNR) and subjective (SSIM) sense with low complexity compared to classic fixed frame rate control method JVT-G012 and prior objective metric based frameskip method.

  • Cognitive radio (CR) is proposed as a key solution to improve spectral efficiency and overcome the spectrum scarcity. Spectrum sensing is an important task in each CR system with the aim of identifying the spectrum holes and using them for secondary user's (SU) communications. Several conventional methods for spectrum sensing have been proposed such as energy detection, matched filter detection, etc. However, the main limitation of these classical methods is that the CR network is not able to communicate with its own base station during the spectrum sensing period and thus a fraction of the available primary frame cannot be exploited for data transmission. The other limitation in conventional methods is that the SU data frames should be synchronized with the primary network data frames. To overcome the above limitations, here, we propose a spectrum sensing technique based on blind source separation (BSS) that does not need time synchronization between the primary network and the CR. Moreover, by using the proposed technique, the SU can maintain its transmission with the base station even during spectrum sensing and thus higher rates are achieved by the CR network. Simulation results indicate that the proposed method outperforms the accuracy of conventional BSS-based spectrum sensing techniques.

  • In this paper, we developed real-tim video transfer system based on Android environment. After android device with embedded camera capture images, it sends image frames to video server system. And also video server transfer the images from client to peer client. Peer client also implemented on android environment. We can send 16 image frames per second without any loss in 3G mobile network environment.

  • A sequence $\{f_i\}^{\infty}_{i=1}$ in a Hilbert space H is said to be exponentially localized with respect to a Riesz basis $\{g_i\}^{\infty}_{i=1}$ for H if there exist positive constants r < 1 and C such that for all i, $j{\in}N$, ${\mid}{\mid}{\leq}Cr^{{\mid}i-j{\mid}}$ and ${\mid}{\mid}{\leq}Cr^{{\mid}i-j{\mid}}$ where $\{{\tilde{g}}_i\}^{\infty}_{i=1}$ is the dual basis of $\{g_i\}^{\infty}_{i=1}$. It can be shown that such sequence is always a Bessel sequence. We present an additional condition which guarantees that $\{f_i\}^{\infty}_{i=1}$ is a frame for H.

  • The tube hydroforming process has received much attention in the automotive industry because of its advantages compared to conventional manufacturing technologies. A wide range of products such as sub-frames, camshafts, radiator frames, axles and crankshafts are made by hydroforming process. The hydroformed parts often need to be structurally joined to other components during assembly. Therefore, these automotive parts need to be manufactured with a localized attachment flange. In this study, FE forming analyses of a part with a rectangular flanged shape was performed with Dynaform 5.5. Using the optimized conditions determined numerically, hydroforming experiments were performed. Then, the characterization of defects was analyzed. Finally, the accuracy of the optimized internal pressure condition as well as that of the initial ram position were evaluated. The results demonstrated that flanged parts can be successfully produced using the tube hydroforming process.

  • In this paper, we solved the underestimation problem of PSNR, which is caused by repeated frames, by easily synchronizing original and decoded frames using the proposed marks. Also we propose full-reference system which can be applied for measuring the quality of various kinds of video communication systems, e.g. wireless handsets, mobile phones and applications for PC. In addition, we propose a new video quality assessment metric using video communication parameters, i.e. frame rate and delay. According to the experiments, the proposed metric is not only appropriate for real-time video communication systems but also shows better correlation with the subjective video quality assessment than PSNR. The proposed measuring system and metric can be effectively used for measuring and standardizing the video quality of future communications.

  • In animating an articulated entity with motion capture data, especially when the reconstruction is based on forward kinematics, there could be large discrepancies at the end effector. The small errors in joint angles tend to be amplified as the forward kinematics positioning progresses toward the end effector. In this paper, we present an algorithm that enhances the motion capture data to reduce positional errors at the end effector. The process is optimized so that the characteristics of the original joint angle data is preserved in the resulting motion. The frames at which the end-effector position needs to be accurate are designated as“keyframes”(e.g. starting and ending frames). In the algorithm, corrections by inverse kinematics are performed at sparse keyframes and they are interpolated with a cubic spline which produces a curve best approximating the measured joint angles. The experiment proves that our algorithm is a valuable tool to improve measured motion especially when end-effector trajectory contains a special goal.
