  • This article starts with a review of the e-self directed learning, future time perspective and decision making, especially in relation to the career myths. In particular, we empirically analyzed the factors affecting the future time perspective and the decision making on the characteristics of career myths(e.g. relatedness of the test myths, the supreme myth and the family myths). Hence the main purpose of this article is to suggest an empirical model explaining how these factors affect e-self directed learning to future time perspective and decision making. Furthermore, we suggested an expanded model about future time perspective, decision making and especially in relation to the career myths. We founded that the e-self directed learning significantly affect the future time perspective and the decision making, also the future time perspective affect the test myths and family myths except the supreme myths and the decision making significantly affect the career myths(i.e., the test myths, the supreme myth, the family myths).

  • Objectives: This longitudinal study was done to identify the relationship of school adjustment and sponsor support or future time perspective and the differences of these 3 variables between 1st and 2nd survey of children having Didimseed account in institutional care. Methods: Participants were 25 elementary fourth to sixth grade children who are living on one facility that located in G. metropolitan area at 1st survey and 2nd survey was done at five-year intervals. Data were collected from September 2012 to September 2017 and were analyzed using t-test, paired t-test, ANOVA, post-hoc test and Pearson's correlation coefficients. Results: The level of school adjustment knowledge was not different significantly according to grade, gender and admission period at 1st survey. At 2nd survey, the level of school adjustment was different significantly according to grade only. The level of school adjustment was associated with positive future time perspective(r=.74) and negative future time perspective(r=-.54) at 1st survey, and that was associated with negative future time perspective(r=-.49) and meeting frequency of sponsor(r=-.43) at 2nd survey. There were not significantly different school adjustment and future time perspective variables between both surveys. But meeting frequency of sponsor at 2nd survey was lower significantly than that at 1st survey. Conclusions: Based on the results of this study, it would be necessary to prepare the policies that could have their positive future time perspective to increase school adjustment of institutionalized children. Also the effective strategies to increase not only Didimseed account support but emotional support through qualified meeting with sponsors should be developed.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the differences in time perspective by socio-demographic variables and to investigate the effect of time perspective on time management and life satisfaction for college students. Questionnaires including time perspective, time management, and life satisfaction scales were used for this study. The survey data from 382 college students were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan test, Pearson's correlation analysis, and stepwise regression. The time perspective, composed of four factors future insensibility and present, past, and future orientation, differed according to the sex, academic grade, and specialty of the college students. The time perspective of the college students and the socioeconomic status of their households were investigated as effective variables on time management and life satisfaction. Based on these results, the implications for research and policy on the time perspective of college students were discussed.

  • The intention of this study was: 1) to standardize the Korean version of the Dogmatism Scale, 2) to examine whether environmental structure affects value systems such as attitudes toward work, time perspective and the personality dimension of dogmatism in adolescent vocational and non-vocational trainees, 3) to examine relationships between those value systems and group differences in personality characteristics of vocational and non-vocational trainees, 4) to observe whether there are differences between high-dogmatism and low-dogmatism subjects with regard to attitudes toward work and future time perspective. The subjects for the study included 841 adolescent vocational (226) and nonvocational (615) from vocational training centers, schools and universities in Seoul. The instruments used in this study were 1) a questionnaire for attitudes toward work, 2) the Future Time Perspective (FTP) developed by Christiansen and 3) the Dogmatism Scale. The results of the present study indicated that behavior settings or environmental variables such as organization type affect the formation of attitudes and of dogmatism in adolescents. The results also showed that dogmatism relates to future time perspectives. This differs from Rokeach's theoretical statements. Dogmatism in this study was related to time perspective, the relationships were optimistic in emotional areas, long-term in direction and concrete in structure. The inconsistency between the results of the present study and Rokeach's suggests further study. A "Psycho-Environmental Model" for the formation of value systems based on the results of this and earlier research of the author were discussed.

  • The present study aims to examine the mediating role of life satisfaction in the relationship between productive activities and future time perspective in later life. Drawn from the 7th wave of the Korea Longitudinal Study of Aging, our sample consists of a total of 6,756 older adults aged 55 and over. Complex samples analyses were conducted the relationship between productive activities, life satisfaction and future time perspective measured in two dimensions (i. e., life expectancy and job expectation). Results from complex samples analysis showed that productive activities were associated with life satisfaction and future time perspective. Employed older adults including unpaid family workers tended to have higher levels of life satisfaction and future time perspective (i.e., life expectancy and job expectation) than their counterparts. The relationship between productive activities and future time perspective was mediated by life satisfaction. Findings suggest that engaging in productive activities influences better satisfaction with life among older adults, which is eventually linked to an expansive view of the future. Policy implications were discussed that promoting productive activities in later life and age-friendly working environment should be encouraged.

  • The present study aims to investigate the sequential mediation model in the relationships between optimistic bias, subjective perception, risk perception, and the future time perspective in terms of a particulate matter and depression, using the sequential mediation model. An online self-reported survey was conducted on 545 participants who agreed to participate in the current study. We considered depression as a dependent variable, optimistic bias as an independent variable, and subjective perception of particulate matter, the risk perception of particulate matter, future-time-perspective as mediators. The sequential mediation analysis was conducted using the SPSS Macro. The results show that optimistic bias was not directly related to depression, but was related to indirect paths through the subjective perception of particulate matter, the risk perception of particulate matter, and future time perspective. More specifically, the lack of optimistic bias was related to a tendency to subjectively perceive the quality of air pollution more seriously and a limited future time perspective, which subsequently related to depression. Future studies should pay more attention to the effects of particulate matter on the quality of life and mental health.

  • According to socioemotional selectivity theory, if people perceive their time left in life as expanded, they have a future-oriented goal of life, but if perceive as limited the goal of life is changed into the pursuit of present emotional satisfaction. Thus, if we perceive our time left as getting limited as we get older, we pay more attention to the positive stimuli than the negative ones and remember more the positive stimuli in order to maintain the current emotional state as positive. This is known as the positivity effect. This study examined whether the positivity effect is caused by a limited future time perspective. The participants were presented with scenarios for hypothetical situations in which the future time was expanded or limited, and were encouraged to immerse in the virtual situation by talking about what they would like to do and whom they wanted to spend time with. Then the participants were presented with 48 positive, negative, and neutral emotional pictures and were asked to recall after 10 minutes delay. 75 university students and 65 elderly participated in the study. In the control condition where the future time perspective was not manipulated, the elderly showed the positivity effect but the youth showed the bias toward negative pictures. The elderly in the expanded time condition recalled positive pictures less and negative pictures more than the elderly in the control condition. On the other hand, the youth in the limited time condition recalled less the negative pictures than the youth in the control condition. These results demonstrated that the elderly did not show the positive bias when the future time perspective was expanded, and that the youth showed the positive bias when the future time perspective was limited. These results show that the positivity effect is related with the limited future time perspective.
