Although many fungicides are registered for use to control powdery mildew on cucurbits, management of resistance to fungicides in pathogen populations still remains a major challenge. Two biopesticides Regalia SC and HMO 736 were evaluated in the greenhouse and field for their efficacy against powdery mildew in squash. In greenhouses, Regalia SC alone significantly (P < 0.05) reduced powdery mildew compared to the nontreated control, and was as effective as the chemical standard Procure 480SC (triflumizole). In alternation with Procure 480SC, Regalia SC demonstrated greater or equivalent effects on reducing the disease. HMO 736 alone showed varying levels of disease control, but alternating with Procure 480SC significantly improved control efficacy. In addition, application of Regalia SC or HMO 736 each in alternation with Procure 480SC significantly increased the chlorophyll content in leaves and the total fresh weight of squash plants, when compared with the water control, Regalia SC and HMO 736 alone. In field trials, application of Regalia SC and HMO 736 each alone significantly reduced disease severity in one of two field trials during the early stage of disease development, but not during later stages when disease pressure became high. Both Regalia SC and HMO 736 each applied in alternation with Procure 480SC significantly improved the control efficacy compared to Procure 480SC alone. Results from this study demonstrated that an integrated management program can be developed for powdery mildew in squash by integrating the biopesticides Regalia SC, HMO 736 with the chemical fungicide Procure 480SC.

Botrytis cinerea is a necrotrophic pathogen causing a major problem in the export and post-harvest of strawberries. Inappropriate use of fungicides leads to resistance among fungal pathogens. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the sensitivity of B. cinerea to various classes of fungicide and to determine the effectiveness of different concentrations of commonly used fungicides. We thus evaluated the effectiveness of six classes of fungicide in inhibiting the growth and development of this pathogen, namely, fludioxonil, iprodione, pyrimethanil, tebuconazole, fenpyrazamine, and boscalid. Fludioxonil was the most effective ($EC_{50}$ < $0.1{\mu}g/ml$), and pyrimethanil was the least effective ($EC_{50}=50{\mu}g/ml$), at inhibiting the mycelial growth of B. cinerea. Fenpyrazamine and pyrimethanil showed relatively low effectiveness in inhibiting the germination and conidial production of B. cinerea. Our results are useful for the management of B. cinerea and as a basis for monitoring the sensitivity of B. cinerea strains to fungicides.

Dimethomorph is a novel fungicide with a high level of activity against diseases induced by certain Oomycetes, including fungal populations that are resistant to other products. In several ways, this fungicide illustrates the opportunities and challenges presented by many modern pesticides. The specific mode of action, which affects cell wall formation, is associated with a very high level of performance and low dose rates under field conditions. These low dose rates, combined with a low level of toxicity to non-target organisms present an outstanding safety profile. This same highly-specific mode of action, however, limits the spectrum of activity and suggests the need for a resistance management plan, both of which must be addressed in new product development. In addition, the biological and physiochemical properties of this, and other new products are not adequately described by the traditional classification of fungicides into“protectant”and“systemic”types. These unique profiles provide novel and useful products for disease control.
Among 6 fungicides, fluazinam, which had an excellent inhibitory effect on mycelial growth and spore germination, was also effective in controlling jujube anthracnose in the field. While EC50 values of metconazole and tebuconazole ranged from 0.2 to 0.9 ㎍/ml and from 0.4 to 1.1 ㎍/ml against the mycelial growth, respectively, each inhibitory effect on spore germination was low by 7.4% and 11.1% at 50.0 ㎍/ml. In the field test, they showed the control value of 80.5% and 77.0%, respectively. The protective fungicides, as mancozeb and folpet, which had a low inhibitory effect on the mycelial growth, but had a high inhibitory effect of spore germination, showed excellent disease control activities by 87.6% and 92.0% in the field. Showing a result of resistance monitoring conducted with the isolates of Colletotricum gloeosporioides, the resistance against carbendazim was already generated in the field, but it was thought that there was no resistance to pyraclostrobin, fluazinam and tebuconazole. However, if the resistance factor value of the population of C. gloeosporioides isolates to pyraclostrobin was high by 160.4, the diversity of the response to the fungicide in the population was high, so it should be taken more attention to the resistance management.
In the past, rice bakanae was considered an endemic disease that did not cause significant losses in Korea; however, the disease has recently become a serious threat due to climate change, changes in farming practices, and the emergence of fungicide-resistant strains. Since the bakanae outbreak in 2006, its incidence has gradually decreased due to the application of effective control measures such as hot water immersion methods and seed disinfectants. However, in 2013, a marked increase in bakanae incidence was observed, causing problems for rice farmers. Therefore, in this review, we present the potential risks from climate change based on an epidemiological understanding of the pathogen, host plant, and environment, which are the key elements influencing the incidence of bakanae. In addition, disease management options to reduce the disease pressure of bakanae below the economic threshold level are investigated, with a specific focus on resistant varieties, as well as chemical, biological, cultural, and physical control methods. Lastly, as more effective countermeasures to bakanae, we propose an integrated disease management option that combines different control methods, including advanced imaging technologies such as remote sensing. In this review, we revisit and examine bakanae, a traditional seed-borne fungal disease that has not gained considerable attention in the agricultural history of Korea. Based on the understanding of the present significance and anticipated risks of the disease, the findings of this study are expected to provide useful information for the establishment of an effective response strategy to bakanae in the era of climate change.
Resistance monitoring for tolyfluanid was conducted over 2 years from 2005 to 2006 with 218 isolates of Botrytis cinerea obtained from infected plants of ginseng. All isolates of B. cinerea were divided into 3 groups such as highly sensitive (HS) group, sensitive (S) group and less sensitive (LS) group to tolyfluanid. HS group was defined as one showing $EC_{50}$ value less than $2.0\;{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$. $EC_{50}$ value of S group ranged between $2.0\;{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ and $18.0\;{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$, while that of LS group was more than $18.0\;{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ Among B. cinerea isolates tested in this study, 174 isolates were included into S group, while 22 isolates were done into HS group. The other isolates belonged to LS group. Botrytis cinerea isolates showed the high correlation of $EC_{50}$ value of mycelial growth with that of spore germination to tolyfluanid. This results could be used for the determination of fungicide resistance and the establishment of strategy for fungicide resistance management.
Phytophthora species, classified under Oomycota, cause significant damage to various crops and trees. The present study introduced Phytophthora species, P. nagaii and P. tentaculata, new to Korea, which pose notable risks to their respective host plants. Our research provided a comprehensive description of these species taking into account their cultural features, morphological characteristics, and molecular phylogenetic analysis using the internal transcribed spacer rDNA region and cytochrome c oxidase subunit mtDNA genes (cox1 and cox2) sequences. In addition, this study first evaluated the sensitivity of P. nagaii and P. tentaculata to five anti-oomycete fungicides, finding both species most responsive to picarbutrazox and P. tentaculata resistant to fluazinam. The data can guide targeted treatment strategies and offer insights into effective control methods. The findings expand our understanding of the diversity, distribution, and management of Phytophthora species in Korea.

Yuzu (Citrus junos) gummosis disease, caused by Phytophthora nicotianae, was first reported in 1997. As known in citrus, Phytophthora is the most fastidious soil-borne pathogen to control. In order to minimize its damage to Citrus spp., integrated pest management (IPM) approach, including fungicide chemicals and resistant cultivars, is necessary. Therefore, in this study we tried to evaluate tolerance of yuzu cultivars and its related species against yuzu Phytophthora. Trifoliate orange was evaluated as a susceptible host to yuzu Phytophthora by both mycelial growth onto extract media and immature fruit inoculation. However, in zoospores spray-inoculation on 2-year-old cuttings tree, trifoliate orange appeared to have a resistant property as showing less than 6% diseased leaf rate. Among yuzu cultivars only 'Namhae No. 1' appeared resistant property against both P. nicotianae and P. citrophthora. The 'Namhae No. 1' showed 5.7% and 10.6% diseased leaf ratio by P. nicotianae and P. citrophthora, respectively. Clearly, in order to reduce damages caused by two yuzu Phytophthora, we suggest that growers may utilize a trifoliate orange as a rootstock and 'Namhae No. 1' as a scion for fruit production.
Soybean cultivars susceptible to Phytophthora root and stem rot are vulnerable to seed rot and damping-off of seedlings and young plants following an infection by Phytophthora sojae. In this study, the disease responses of Japanese soybean cultivars including currently grown main cultivars during the early growth stages were investigated following infections by multiple P. sojae isolates from Japanese fields. The extent of the resistance to 17 P. sojae isolates after inoculations at 14, 21, and 28 days after seeding varied significantly among 18 Japanese and two US soybean cultivars. Moreover, the disease responses of each cultivar differed significantly depending on the P. sojae isolate and the plant age at inoculation. Additionally, the treatment of 'Nattosyo-ryu' seeds with three fungicidal agrochemicals provided significant protection from P. sojae when plants were inoculated at 14-28 days after seeding. These results indicate that none of the Japanese soybean cultivars are completely resistant to all tested P. sojae isolates during the first month after sowing. However, the severity of the disease was limited when plants were inoculated during the later growth stages. Furthermore, the protective effects of the tested agrochemicals were maintained for at least 28 days after the seed treatment. Japanese soybean cultivars susceptible to Phytophthora root and stem rot that are grown under environmental conditions favorable for P. sojae infections require the implementation of certain practices, such as seed treatments with appropriate agrochemicals, to ensure they are protected from P. sojae during the early part of the soybean growing season.

Citrus melanose, caused by Diaporthe citri, has been one of the serious diseases, and chemical fungicides were used for protection in many citrus orchards of Jeju Island. Establishing a disinfectant resistance management system and reducing pesticide usage would be important for contributing to safe agricultural production. In this study, monitoring of chemical resistance was performed with 40 representative D. citri isolates from many citrus orchards in Jeju Island. Four different fungicides, kresoxim-methyl, benomyl, fluazinam, and prochloraz manganese, with seven different concentrations were tested in vitro by growing the mycelium of the fungal isolates on the artificial medium potato dextrose agar. Among the 40 fungal isolates, 12 isolates were investigated as resistant to kresoxim-methyl which could not inhibit the mycelium growth to more than 50%. Especially isolate NEL21-2 was also resistant against benomyl, whose hyphae grew well even on the highest chemical concentration. However, any chemical resistance of fungal isolates was found against neither fluazinam nor prochloraz manganese. On the other hand, in vivo bio-testing of some resistant isolates was performed against both kresoxim-methyl and benomyl on young citrus leaves. Typical melanose symptoms developed on the citrus leaves pre-treated with both agrochemicals after inoculation with the resistant isolates. However, no or less symptoms were observed when the susceptible isolates were inoculated. Based on these results, it was suggested that some resistant isolates of D. citri occurred against both systemic fungicides, which may be valuable to build a strategy for protecting citrus disease.
