  • The present paper deals with the finite element analysis of water tanks with rigid baffle. Fluid is discretized by two dimensional eight-node isoparametric elements and the governing equation is simulated by pressure based formulation to reduce the degrees of freedom in the domain. Both free vibration and force vibration analysis are carried out for different sizes and positions of block at tank bottom. The fundamental frequency depends on block height and it reduces with the increase of block height. The variation of hydrodynamic pressure on tank walls not only depends of the exciting frequency but also on the size and position of rigid block at tank bottom. The hydrodynamic pressure has higher value when the exciting frequency is equal and lower than the fundamental frequency of the water in the tank. Similarly, the hydrodynamic pressure increases with the increase of width of the block for all exciting frequencies when the block is at the centre of tank. The left and right walls of tank have experienced different hydrodynamic pressure when the block is placed at off-centre. However, the increase in hydrodynamic pressure on nearest tank wall becomes insignificant after a certain value of the distance between the wall and the rigid block.

  • A simulation is performed to investigate the effect of the pipe supports on the change of the natural frequencies of curved pipe systems containing fluid flow, for different elbow angles and geometry of the pipe systems. Based upon the Hamilton's principle, the equations of motions are derived, and the finite element equation is constructed to solve the corresponding eigenvalue problem. The angles of elbows do not affect the change of the fundamental natural frequency, but affect the change of the third or higher natural frequencies. Without any support, the change of the fundamental natural frequency due to the geometric change is smaller than the change of the second or higher natural frequencies. The more curve parts exist in the pipe system, the less change of lower frequency range, compared with the change of higher frequency range, is observed. Spring supports can be used to reduce the fundamental natural frequency, without change of the second or higher natural frequencies. To avoid resonance, which is critically dangerous from the view point of structural dynamics, the mechanical properties such as stiffness or the location of pipe supports are need to be changed to isolate the natural frequencies from the frequency range of dominant vibration modes.

  • This paper presents a numerical solution for the thick cylinders made of functionally graded materials (FGMs) with a constant Poisson's ratio and an arbitrary Young's modulus. We define two fundamental solutions which are derived from an ordinary differential equation under two particular initial boundary conditions. In addition, for the single layer case, we can define the transfer matrix N. The matrix gives a relation between the values of stress and displacement at the interior and exterior points. By using the assumed boundary condition and the transfer matrix, we can obtain the final solution. The transfer matrix method also provides an effective way for the solution of multiply layered cylinder. Finally, a lot of numerical examples are present.

  • Air-dynamic bearings are increasingly used in supporting small high-speed rotating bodies. This study investigates the effects of design parameters on the axial stiffness of spiral-grooved air bearings of various curvatures. Design parameters are fundamental clearance, groove depth, and bearing number. The pressure distribution at the clearance between the stator and rotor of the bearing is obtained by solving the Reynolds equation, and the supporting load and the axial linear stiffness are calculated from the pressure distribution. It is found that a larger curvature increases the axial linear stiffness more and that there exist an optimal groove depth for the linear stiffness of the air bearing. It is also found that the linear stiffness has a linear relationship with the bearing number.

  • Vehicle interior noise is the results of numerous sources of excitation. One source involving tire pavement interaction is the tire cavity resonance and the forcing it provides to the vehicle spindle. Using a simplified model for the tire acoustic cavity system only, we formulated finite element equation to predict the fundamental acoustic cavity resonant characteristics inside tire-wheel assembly of undeformed and deformed tire. Combining the finite element analysis with experimental verification, we explained the acoustic characteristics theoretically. Especially, we have shown that the difference between the first two resonant frequencies increases as the deformation of deformed tire increases.

  • In this paper, we define conditional integrals on abstract Wiener and Hilbert spaces and then obtain a formula for evaluating the integrals. We use this formula to establish the existence of conditional Feynman integrals for the classes $A^{q}$(B) and $A^{q}$(H) of functions on abstract Wiener and Hilbert spaces and then specialize this result to provide the fundamental solution to the Schrodinger equation with the forced harmonic oscillator.tor.

  • This research deals with the study of vibrational behavior of armchair and zigzag single-walled carbon nanotubes invoking extended Love shell theory. The effects of different physical and material parameters on the fundamental frequencies are investigated. By using volume fraction for power law index, the fundamental natural frequency spectra for two forms of single-walled carbon nanotubes are calculated. The influence of frequencies against length-to-diameter ratios with varying power law index are investigated in detail for these tubes. To discretize the governing equation in eigen-value form, wave propagation approach is developed. Complex exponential functions have been used and the axial model depends on boundary condition that has been described at the edges of carbon nanotubes to calculate the axial modal dependence. Computer software MATLAB is utilized for the frequencies of single-walled carbon nanotubes and current results shows a good stability with comparison of other studies.

  • The indirect boundary integral equation is formulated to analyze the behavior of a cavity in a multilayered half-plane subjected to earthquake waves. This formulation uses the fundamental solutions that are numerically calculated by the generalized transmission and reflection coefficient method. The free surface of the cavity without external excitation influences the behavior of the half-plane. Consequently this analysis adds the consideration of scattering-field into the analysis and the total motion field of the cavity is decomposed into the free-field and scattering-field motions. The free-field motion is obtained from the modification of the transmission and reflection coefficient method. The scattering-field motion is calculated is calculated by the indirect boundary value problem which has the ficticious boundaries and sources. In this study, P wave, SV wave, SH wave, and Rayleigh wave are analyzed respectively.

  • Gas atomization of liquid metal using nozzle technology has more advantages over other methods. Previous study shows that high-velocity gas is important for effective liquid metal atomization. An important first step towards understanding the gas atomization using nozzle is complete evaluation of the flow fields. This will provide a basis for understanding how well high velocity gas is brought to bear on the liquid metal. Present work is a fundamental study of liquid metal atomization for various pressure ratio, different gas and temperature. A two-dimension, axisymmetry compressible Navier-Stokes equations are considered. Two-equation k-epsilon turbulence model is selected.
