This study aims to extend fundamental categories from Clause 11, "facet analysis" in International Standards for thesaurus(ISO 25964-1) by analyzing fundamental categories of Clause 11 and concept and their scope in a thesaurus of Clause 5. For to do this, the fundamental categories were established by adjusting partially and adding mental entities explicitly referencing the highest concepts(YAMATO which is the upper ontology of Mizoguchi, and ISO 2788) and existing fundamental categories(PMEST, FRBR group 3 entities, 13 categories in CRG). Also, established fundamental categories were reorganized and structured based on concreteness/abstraction of PMEST in Ranganathan and independence/dependence of YAMATO in Mizoguchi. And the upper categories were divided into independent and dependent entities. Under these entities 28 criteria are included in the independent ones and 2 criteria in the dependent ones. In the further study, the result of this study can be expected to reuse and refer as controlled vocabulary in the field like classification, taxonomies and thesauri where expected to utilize fundamental categories and as the high-level concept when constructing an ontology for information retrieval.
Methodology of ontology building based on Web resources will not only reduce significantly the ontology construction period, but also enhance the quality of the ontology. Remarkable progress has been achieved in this regard, but they encounter similar difficulties, such as the Web data extraction and knowledge acquisition. This paper researches on the characteristics of ontology construction data, including dynamics, largeness, variation and openness and other features, and the fundamental issue of ontology construction - formalized representation method. Then, the key technologies used in and the difficulties with ontology construction are summarized. A software Model-OntoMaker (Ontology Maker) is designed. The model is innovative in two regards: (1) the improvement of generality: the meta learning machine will dynamically pick appropriate ontology learning methodologies for data of different domains, thus optimizing the results; (2) the merged processing of (semi-) structural and non-structural data. In addition, as known to all wetland researchers, information sharing is vital to wetland exploitation and protection, while wetland ontology construction is the basic task for information sharing. OntoMaker constructs the wetland ontologies, and the model in this work can also be referred to other environmental domains.

In developing information systems, conceptual modeling is among the most fundamental means. The importance attributed to conceptual modeling has not only given rise to a lot of modeling methods, but also to the "yet another modeling approach (YAMA)" syndrome and the "not another modeling approach (NAMA)" hysteria. Criticism of conceptual modeling methods usually targets their lacking of theoretical foundations. In response to such criticism, various approaches towards theoretical foundations of conceptual modeling have been proposed so far. One of the recent responses to the quest for theoretical foundations of conceptual modeling is the reference to the philosophical ontology. The currently most prominent of diverse approaches towards ontological foundations of conceptual modeling appears to be the Bunge-Wand-Weber (BWW) ontology. Recent approaches attempt to regard BWW ontology as another conceptual data model as well as a criterion for evaluating various conceptual models. However, unfortunately, relatively few researches have been made on interoperability between the Entity-Relationship (ER) model, which is the most dominant conceptual data model, and ontology based model. In this paper, we investigate the interoperability between ontology and the ER model. In detail we (i) reclassify components of ER model with respect to ontology concepts, (ii) identify some components that cannot be directly represented in ontology notation, and (iii) present alternative representations to the components to acquire ontologically clear ER diagrams. Additionally, we (iv) present a set of mapping rules for converting the ontologically clear ER diagram into the corresponding ontology. In a case study, we show the process of converting an ER diagram for a concise Project Management System (PMS) into the ontologically clear ER diagram and the corresponding ontology. We also describe an experiment that we undertook to test whether users understand the Ontologically-Clear ER diagram better.

As a fundamental knowledge source in a global learning environment, it is feasible to apply the relational database management systems (RDBMS), object-oriented database management systems (OODBMS), and other traditional DBMS. However, the traditional DBMSs are not feasible in semantic knowledge/ontology representation and inference. One of the reasonable ways to overcome the limitations is the semantic web-based business support framework. Especially, in this study, we focused on the development of semantic web ontology and natural language (NL)-based inference framework. To validate the efficiency of the proposed framework, we considered a reasonable scenario for course recommendation in a university.

In this study it is intended to develop the ontology which can express the relation between objects with emphasis on the structural representation of semantics. Its interoperability with other kinds of previous ontology and metadata was also considered so that the developed ontology may be applicable to the real situation. The ABC Ontology can get extended into another field where the application of the concept of event is Possible, for ABC Ontology Provides the fundamental framework on the axis of event. In this study it is Music where ABC Ontology can be applied properly, which results in creating Music Ontology. Music Ontology Provides the infrastructure of knowledge for reasoning of Potential meaning as well as the simple semantic connection of terms. The extended model of ABC Ontology has been developed by applying Music Ontology, which is the domain ontology and conveys meaning, to ABC Ontology that represents the whole framework. The representation of conceptual relation in ABC Ontology turns into the association of the framework and meaning in the extended model of ABC Ontology, with reasoning rules which are typical in ontology Also, interoperability of the extended model of ABC Ontology is examined in consideration of co-operating with metadata different from those in it.

The purpose of this study is to describe major concepts related to W3C OWL and ISO Topic Maps and to provide the result of comparison and analysis regarding semantic expression power between two ontology languages. This paper is comprised of the following parts: 1) describing URI and namespace concepts that are fundamental building block of effective ontology construction; 2) offering detailed explanation of major Topic Map concepts such as topics, associations, and occurrences; 3) providing how to accomplish the second purpose of cataloging(grouping related items when displaying the search result) using Topic Map; and 4) finally explaining the difference between two ontology languages in terms of semantic expression power.
The revolution of new media has overthrown the existing social structure and brought about the changes in the concepts of the space and subject. These changes are identical to the existential issue of the space and subject and to fundamental issue of spatial design. This study will interpret the new media in view of ontology and analyze the characteristics by applying it to spatial design. In this study, the characteristics of new media of ontological viewpoint were divided into six categories containing the process space, the space of exterior meaning, the space of the affairs, interactive subject, playful subject and extension of sense, which were the basis for this analysis. The results showed that the expression characteristics of spatial concept of ontology and subject concepts revealed in the areas of architectural surface, the space of art and installation, and architectural design process.
In these days ERP is essential fundamental system of most companies which want to take part in e-business. But few companies are running ERP systems successfully because ERP can not manage knowledge of running that system but only data. In this paper, we propose a model of three layed knowledge ontology and a system to manage our knowledge ontology. We interface the our system with a commercial ERP system and then install and run these systems on a manufacturing company. We show the possibilities of effective running of ERP system using a knowledge ontology and it's management system.

ERP system is a fundamental system that is commonly adopted by most companies that intend to take part in e-business. However, few companies are running ERP systems successfully because of inaccuracy in data managed by ERP system. In this paper, we propose a model and the building process of item ontology which organize concepts describing all items managed by enterprises. In addition, we design and implement a system to create and manage item ontologies. We interface our system with a commercial ERP system, then install and run these systems on a manufacturing company. Our item ontologies and management system might help enterprises when they try to take part in e-business.

The purpose of this study is to investigate a fundamental model for categories and relationships among concepts in library and information science field in order to construct an ontology based upon the knowledge construct of human being. Questionnaire and interview were involved for this study, The results shows that students' knowledge structure was different from KDC and DDC schemes. Students had an object oriented knowledge structure and provided four relationship models. These model could provide a fundamental data for ontology construction. Also, it shows that student academic grades influenced their knowledge structures.
