Free Vibrations and Buckling Loads of Column with Clamped-Spring Ends and Constant Volume (고정-스프링 일정체적 기둥의 자유진동 및 좌굴하중)

  • This study deals with the free vibrations and buckling loads of column with clamped-spring ends and constant volume. The column has the regular polygon cross-section whose depth is varied with the linear functional fashion. The differential equation governing the free vibration of such column is derived in which the effect of axial load is included. The differential equation is solved numerically for calculating frequencies. By using the relationship between loads and frequencies, the buckling loads are also obtained.

Durability Test for the Expansion Joint of High-Speed Railway Bridge (고속철도 교량 신축이음장치의 내구성 실험)

  • To absorb the deformation of live load, thermal gradient, shrinkage and creep in bridge structures and general structures, expansion joint has to be established. Especially expansion joint for high-speed railway bridge has to accomodate the static and dynamic forces and it not only has the durability of itself but also maintain the durability of structure by preventing the leakage of water. The actual used product of expansion joint for high-speed railway bridge is only ones made in France, Germany and Japan. In this study, the development process and test results of developed expansion joint are introduced which has the functional operation and durability enough to apply to high-speed railway bridges, roadway bridges and general structures. The tests consist of fatigue-durability test of 3 million times by high-speed rail load, leakage test and jack-up test for verifying the possibility of exchanging it. The performance of developed expansion joint satisfy the specification of Korea High Speed Rail Construction authority.

Thermal post-buckling analysis of porous functionally graded pipes with initial geometric imperfection

  • In this paper, the thermal post-buckling characteristics of functionally graded (FG) pipes with initial geometric imperfection are studied. Considering the influence of initial geometric defects, temperature and geometric nonlinearity, Euler-Lagrange principle is used to derive the nonlinear governing equations of the FG pipes. Considering three different boundary conditions, the two-step perturbation method is used to solve the nonlinear governing equations, and the expressions of thermal post-buckling responses are also obtained. Finally, the correctness of this paper is verified by numerical analyses, and the effects of initial geometric defects, functional graded index, elastic foundation, porosity, thickness of pipe and boundary conditions on thermal post-buckling response are analyzed. It is found that, bifurcation buckling exists for the pipes without initial geometric imperfection. In contrast, there is no bifurcation buckling phenomenon for the pipes with initial geometric imperfection. Meanwhile, the elastic stiffness can significantly improve thermal post-buckling load and thermal post-buckling strength. The larger the porosity, the greater the thermal buckling load and the thermal buckling strength.

  • The use of non-bearing light weight wall has increased recently due to the increase of high-rise buildings and supply of long-life housing. Light weight wall has advantages such as reducing the self-weight of the building, convenience in installation, and shortening construction period, however, must have a sufficient strength to external force. This study standardized the impact resistance test method for light weight walls by using the actual impact load obtained through load analysis test in previous studies. The impact resistance test method was divided into the test method that uses soft body and the one that uses hard body. The size of specimen was set up as height 2.4m and width 3.0m. The size and shape of the body followed those used in BS 5234-2 and so on for the compatibility with the test method used overseas. The judgment criteria for impact resistance based on test results were not defined uniformly as the assessment of functional damage can vary depending on the type of material, structural method, purpose of wall, and so on even when the same impact load was applied.

  • The optimization problems, based on Pontryagin's Maximum Principle, for minimizing (damping) Xenon spatial oscillations in Load Following operations of Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) is presented. The optimization model is formulated as an optimal tracking problem with quadratic objective functional. The oen-group diffusion equations and Xe-I dynamic equations are defined as equality constraints. By applying the maximum principle, the original problem is decomposed into a single time problem with no constraints. The resultant subproblems are optimized by using the conjugate Gradient Method. The computational results show that the Xenon spatial oscillation is minimized, and the reactor follows the load demand of the electrical power systems while maintaining the desired power distribution.

  • Recently, avionics systems are being developed as integrated modular architecture applying the modular integration design of the functional unit to reduce maintenance costs and increase operating performance. Additionally, a partitioning operating system based on virtualization technology was used to process various mission control functions. In virtualization technology, the CPU processing load distribution is a key consideration. Especially, the uncertainty of the I/O processing time is a risk factor in the design of reliable avionics systems. In this paper, we examine the influence of the I/O processing method by comparing and analyzing the CPU processing load by the I/O processing method through use of case analysis and applying it to the example of spatial-temporal partitioning.

  • Nano materials have great potential for development of advanced lubricating and protecting materials. Nano-particles capped by organic compound such as organic acid, dialkyldithiophosphate (DDP) are capable to disperse stably in lubricating oils, and are able to reduce wear and to increase load-carrying capacity.

  • This study was carried out to analyse the central functions of district-load areas (Eup or Myon in Korea) in the neighbourhood zone of Saemankeum Reclamation Area. Quantitative Evaluation of Median Nerve Motor Function in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Using Load Cell : Correlation with Clinical, Electrodiagnostic, and Ultrasonographic Findings

  • Objective : Major complaints of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) are sensory components. However, motor deficit also impedes functional status of hand. Contrary to evaluation of sensory function, the objective, quantitative evaluation of median nerve motor function is not easy. The motor function of median was evaluated quantitatively using load cell and its correlation with findings of electrodiagnostic study (EDS) was evaluated. Methods : Objective motor function of median nerve was evaluated by load cell and personal computer-based measurement system. All of the measurement was done in patients diagnosed as having idiopathic CTS by clinical features and EDS findings. The strength of thumb abduction and index finger flexion was measured in each hand three times, and the average value was used to calculate thumb index ratio (TIR). The correlation of TIR with clinical, EDS, and ultrasonographic findings were evaluated. Results : The TIR was evaluated in 67 patients (119 hands). There were 14 males and 53 females, mean age were 57.6 years (range 28 to 81). The higher preoperative nerve conductive studies grade of the patients, the lower TIR was observed [p<0.001, analysis of variance (ANOVA)]. TIR of cases with thenar atrophy were significantly lower than those without (p<0.001, t-test). TIR were significantly lower in patients with severe median nerve swelling in ultrasonography (p=0.042, ANOVA). Conclusion : Measurements of median nerve motor function using load cell is a valuable evaluation tool in CTS. It might be helpful in detecting subclinical motor dysfunction before muscle atrophy develops.
