Chitosan, which is a biopolymer, composed of glucosamine units linked by $\beta$-1, 4 glycoside bonds, is rich in shells of crustacean such as crabs and shrimps. Consumption of chitosan has been rapidly increased as a functional food. We examined effects of chitosan on the damages caused by lead (Pb) exposure in rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 8 groups (n = 64), then fed diets containing 3% cellulose (control) or 3% chitosan, each with 4 different lead doses (0 mg/d, 20 mg/d, 50 mg/d, and 100 mg/d) for 4 wks. Lead doses were given 3 times per week by oral administration. Blood lead levels in rats increased depending on the administered doses of lead. Rats fed chitosan diets showed lower blood lead concentration than did their respective controls. Effect of chitosan on the blood lead was more beneficial in rats exposed to lower lead (20 mg/d) than in rats exposed to higher lead (50 mg/d and 100 mg/d). Histological changes in erythrocytes and liver were also examined. Chitosan tended to reduce numbers of basophilic stippling erythrocytes and improve the histological liver changes in rats given various lead doses. The preventive effects of chitosan on liver damages were stronger in rats with higher lead than those with lower lead. These results indicate that chitosan has beneficial effects on both blood toxicological responses and histological damages of erythrocytes and liver induced by the administration of various lead doses.
Taegwondo uniforms need powerful durability in fabrics against friction and shock because of higher exercising power. Therefore, in this study we developed more comfortable Taegwondo uniform for functional fabrics(deodorization rate, antibacterial activity and static charge). Chitosan is a deacetylated product of chitin, has widely been used in the biomedical sector, food industry, and textile industry. For the purpose of this study, we used the chitosan, which was congenial to the human body. Then, we compared the differences between the chitosan treated fabrics and non treated fabrics of Taegwondo uniform(100% polyester, 65% polyester/35% cotton). Chitosan was dissolved in 1% acetic acid. Also, the fabrics were washed using distilled water. Afterward, its treatment with chitosan was completed by padding the sample to its wet pick-up at $80{\pm}5%$ and by heating $150^{\circ}$ for 3 minutes. The chitosan treated Taegwondo uniform was improved on deodorization rate than non treated uniform. And the chitosan treated Taegwondo uniform was improved remarkably the antibacterial activity in all samples. In the further researches, the static charge was reduced in chitosan treatment uniform.
This study aims to pursue the multi-functional textile finishing method to detoxify chemical warfare agent by simply treating the well-known antimicrobial agent, chitosan, to cotton fabric. For this purpose, DFP(diisopropylfluorophosphate) was sele cted as a chemical warfare agent simulant and cotton fabric was treated with 0.5, 1.0, and 2wt% chitosan solution in 1wt% acetic acid. DFP decontamination properties of the chitosan treated cotton fabrics were evaluated and compared with the untreated cotton fabric. The chitosan treated cotton fabrics showed better DFP decontamination than the untreated cotton. Decontamination properties of the chitosan treated cotton fabrics improved with the increased chitosan solution used. Especially, the cotton fabrics treated with 2wt% chitosan solution showed 5 times more DFP decontamina tion than the untreated cotton fabrics. This suggested that the chitosan treated fabric has potential to be used as a material for protective clothing with chemical warfare agent detoxifying and antimicrobial properties.

Chitosan, a deacetylated derivative of chitin, is one of the abundant resources, and its biological properties such as antibactierial activity, hypocholesterolemic activity, and hypertensive action are remarked. However, increasing attention has recently been yen to converting chitosan to its oligosaccharides because they possess various functional properties like antitumor activity, immune-enhancing effects, enhancing protective effects against infection with some pathogens in mice, antifungal activity, and antimicrobial activity (Jeon et al., 2001). In this study, two types of chitosan-catechol polymers (a-CP and b-CP) were synthesized and mixed with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and sodium tetraborate decahydrate (Na2B4O7·10H2O) to form hydrogels. The characteristics of these polymers were tuned by varying the pH during their syntheses, and their structures were characterized using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. Rheological and self-healing properties of hydrogels were evaluated. As a result, the viscoelastic modulus was improved due to the increased functional group content, and the self-healing property was excellent regardless of the functional group content.
With a new method of applying chitosan and alginate onto cellulose, multi-coated cotton fabrics with chitosan and alginate were prepared and characterized. To coat cotton with chitosan, raw cotton was dipped in chitosan solution, mangled of 1kgf/$cm^2$, neutralized in 2 wt% NaOH soluton, washed, and dried at $60^{\circ}C$ oven. The chitosan-coated fiber was dipped in sodium alginate solution, 1kgf/$cm^2$ mangled, neutralized in 2 wt% $CaCl_2$ solution, washed, and dried at $60^{\circ}C$ oven, resulting in CCAC(coated cotton with chitosan and calcium alginate skin) fiber characteristics. Excellent absorbancy of distilled water and saline solution was observed by the absorption test on cotton fabric treated with CCAC(0.5 wt% calcium alginate) and 0.5 wt% calcium alginate respectively. The SEM photograph confirmed the uniform coating on the cotton fabric surface.

Chinin is the second most plentiful natural polymer. Currently, chitin and chitosan are manufactured commercially in large scale from crab and shrimp shell as fish processing waste. They is being used in many commercial application because of their various functional properties. Chitosan, in particular, is being evaluated as biomedical materials in a number of food and pharmaceutical industries. Despite their potential abilities, the perfect safety had been demonstrated until now. However, the long-term feeding with chitin was not any negative effect the body weights and serum enzymatic activities in mice. And, in rats supplied with $5\%$ of chitosan diet for 450 days, there was no changes of Ca concentration in blood, bone and other organs except for in muscle. Consequently, there was no direct toxicity of chitin and chitosan against some animals such as rat and mouse by recently reports.
Tencel fabric cationized with chitosan can be effectively dyed with anionic dyes. To investigate the change of dyeing properties of cationized Tencel fabric, some experiments were performed under the several dyeing conditions with acid and reactive dyes. Whiteness index decreased with the increment of crosslinking agent concentration. The cationized Tencel fabric was dyed well by anionic dye such as acid dye, the dyeability of reactive dye was improved by addition of a little salt without alkali. The dye fixation on the cationized Tencel fabric was increased with chitosan concentration without electrolyte and alkali. The dyeability of Tencel treated with chitosan was better than controlled Tencel, especially under the acidic conditions. According to the number and the types of functional group of reactive dyes, dye affinity of the modified Tencel fabric varied and wash fastness of acid dye was better than reactive dye.
To increase the dissolution rate of piroxicam, chitin and chitosan which are widely occurring biodegradable natural materials were used as drug carriers. The ground mixtures of piroxicam with chitin or chitosan were prepared by grinding in a ball mill. The dissolution rates of piroxicam from the ground mixtures were enhanced markedly than that from the physical mixtures or from intact piroxicam. The X-ray diffraction peaks disappeared in the ground mixture indicating the production of the amorphous form. The comparison of infrared spectra of the physical mixture and the ground minture showed an interaction such as association between the functional groups of piroxicam and chitin or chitosan in the molecular level. The weight losses in TGA curves shoed all the same patterns. However, in the ground mixture by DTA curve, the undothermic peak due to the fusion of piroxicam was disappeared indicating the different thermal property.
This research did chistosan and cation treatment to raise K/S vlue. In this result, chitosan 1%, cation 4% treatment showed the highest K/S value. Gilycyrrhizae radix dyeing showed the highest K/S value in pH3, pre-mordant, $30^{\circ}C$, 80 min.. Its color Y, YR. K/S value over 2.5 times showed in chitosan treatment fabrics, 5 times in cation treatment fabrics than cotton fabrics on the condition of none-mordant ones. In the antibacterial activity, staphylococus showed 99.9% in all fabrics. Klebsilla Pneumonia also showed 97.1% in chitosan treatment fabrics and it showed 99.9% in other all fabrics. In the deodorization and UV-cut effect, the more K/S value and the larger effect was showed.
