In the process of the sonar image textures produced, the orientation and scale factors are very significant. However, most of the related methods ignore the directional information and scale invariance or just pay attention to one of them. To overcome this problem, we apply Gabor wavelet to extract the features of sonar images, which combine the advantages of both the Gabor filter and traditional wavelet function. The mother wavelet is designed with constrained parameters and the optimal parameters will be selected at each orientation, with the help of bandwidth parameters based on the Fisher criterion. The Gabor wavelet can have the properties of both multi-scale and multi-orientation. Based on our experiment, this method is more appropriate than traditional wavelet or single Gabor filter as it provides the better discrimination of the textures and improves the recognition rate effectively. Meanwhile, comparing with other fusion methods, it can reduce the complexity and improve the calculation efficiency.

Classification is an important research area as data can be easily obtained even if the number of predictors becomes huge. The support vector machine(SVM) is widely used to classify a subject into a predetermined group because it gives sound theoretical background and better performance than other methods in many applications. The SVM can be viewed as a penalized method with the hinge loss function and penalty functions. Instead of $L_2$ penalty function Fan and Li (2001) proposed the smoothly clipped absolute deviation(SCAD) satisfying good statistical properties. Despite the ability of SVMs, they have drawbacks of non-robustness when there are outliers in the data. We develop a robust SVM method using a weight function with the SCAD penalty function based on the local quadratic approximation. We compare the performance of the proposed SVM with the SVM using the $L_1$ and $L_2$ penalty functions.
The support vector machine, as a binary classifier, is known to surpass the other classifiers only in binary classification problems through the various experiments. Even though its theory is based on the maximal margin classifier, the support vector machine approach cannot be easily extended to the multi-classification problems. In this paper, we review the extension techniques of the support vector machine toward the multi-classification and do the performance comparison. Depending on the data decomposition of the training data, the support vector machine is easily adapted for a multi-classification problem without modifying the intrinsic characteristics of the binary classifier. The performance is evaluated on a collection of the benchmark data sets and compared according to the selected teaming strategies, the training time, and the results of the neural network with the backpropagation teaming. The experiments suggest that the support vector machine is applicable and effective in the general multi-class classification problems when compared to the results of the neural network.

In linear discriminant analysis there are two important properties concerning the effectiveness of discriminant function modeling. The first is the separability of the discriminant function for different classes. The separability reaches its optimum by maximizing the ratio of between-class to within-class variance. The second is the stability of the discriminant function against noises present in the measurement variables. One can optimize the stability by exploring the discriminant variates in a principal variation subspace, i. e., the directions that account for a majority of the total variation of the data. An unstable discriminant function will exhibit inflated variance in the prediction of future unclassified objects, exposed to a significantly increased risk of erroneous prediction. Therefore, an ideal discriminant function should not only separate different classes with a minimum misclassification rate for the training set, but also possess a good stability such that the prediction variance for unclassified objects can be as small as possible. In other words, an optimal classifier should find a balance between the separability and the stability. This is of special significance for multivariate spectroscopy-based classification where multicollinearity always leads to discriminant directions located in low-spread subspaces. A new regularized discriminant analysis technique, the principal discriminant variate (PDV) method, has been developed for handling effectively multicollinear data commonly encountered in multivariate spectroscopy-based classification. The motivation behind this method is to seek a sequence of discriminant directions that not only optimize the separability between different classes, but also account for a maximized variation present in the data. Three different formulations for the PDV methods are suggested, and an effective computing procedure is proposed for a PDV method. Near-infrared (NIR) spectra of blood plasma samples from mastitic and healthy cows have been used to evaluate the behavior of the PDV method in comparison with principal component analysis (PCA), discriminant partial least squares (DPLS), soft independent modeling of class analogies (SIMCA) and Fisher linear discriminant analysis (FLDA). Results obtained demonstrate that the PDV method exhibits improved stability in prediction without significant loss of separability. The NIR spectra of blood plasma samples from mastitic and healthy cows are clearly discriminated between by the PDV method. Moreover, the proposed method provides superior performance to PCA, DPLS, SIMCA and FLDA, indicating that PDV is a promising tool in discriminant analysis of spectra-characterized samples with only small compositional difference, thereby providing a useful means for spectroscopy-based clinic applications.
Analyzing patterns in data points embedded in linear and non-linear feature spaces is considered as one of the common research problems among different research areas, for example: data mining, machine learning, pattern recognition, and multivariate analysis. In this paper, data points are heterogeneous sets of biosequences (composite data points). A composite data point is a set of ordinary data points (e.g., set of feature vectors). We theoretically extend the derivation of the largest generalized eigenvalue-based distance metric Dij(γ1) in any linear and non-linear feature spaces. We prove that Dij(γ1) is a metric under any linear and non-linear feature transformation function. We show the sufficiency and efficiency of using the decision rule $\bar{{\delta}}_{{\Xi}i}$(i.e., mean of Dij(γ1)) in classification of heterogeneous sets of biosequences compared with the decision rules min𝚵iand median𝚵i. We analyze the impact of linear and non-linear transformation functions on classifying/clustering collections of heterogeneous sets of biosequences. The impact of the length of a sequence in a heterogeneous sequence-set generated by simulation on the classification and clustering results in linear and non-linear feature spaces is empirically shown in this paper. We propose a new concept: the limiting dispersion map of the existing clusters in heterogeneous sets of biosequences embedded in linear and nonlinear feature spaces, which is based on the limiting distribution of nucleotide compositions estimated from real data sets. Finally, the empirical conclusions and the scientific evidences are deduced from the experiments to support the theoretical side stated in this paper.
Mammogram images are sensitive in nature and even a minor change in the environment affects the quality of the images. Due to the lack of expert radiologists, it is difficult to interpret the mammogram images. In this paper an algorithm is proposed for a computer-aided diagnosis system, which is based on the wavelet based adaptive sigmoid function. The cascade feed-forward back propagation technique has been used for training and testing purposes. Due to the poor contrast in digital mammogram images it is difficult to process the images directly. Thus, the images were first processed using the wavelet based adaptive sigmoid function and then the suspicious regions were selected to extract the features. A combination of texture features and gray-level co-occurrence matrix features were extracted and used for training and testing purposes. The system was trained with 150 images, while a total 100 mammogram images were used for testing. A classification accuracy of more than 95% was obtained with our proposed method.
Purpose: This study was to classify elderly in long-term care hospitals for using Resource Utilization Group(RUG-III) and to consider feasibility of payment method based on RUG-III classification system in Korea. Method: This study designed by measuring resident characteristics using the Resident Assessment Instrument-Minimum Data Set(RAI-MDS) and staff time. The data were collected from 382 elderly over sixty-year old, inpatient in the five long-term care hospitals. Staff time was converted into standard time based on the average wage of nurse and aids. Result: The subjects were classified into 4 groups. The group of Clinically Complex was the largest(46.3%), Reduced Physical Function(27.2%), Behavior Problem(17.0%), and Impaired Cognition(9.4%). The average resource use for one resident in terms of care time(nurses, aids) was 183.7 minutes a day. Relative resource use was expressed as a case mix index(CMI) calculated as a proportion of mean resource use. The CMI of Clinically Complex group was the largest(1.10), and then Reduced Physical Function(0.93), Behavior Problem(0.93), and Impaired Cognition(0.83) followed. The difference of the resource use showed statistical significance between major groups(p<0.0001). Conclusion: The results of this study showed that the RUG-III classification system differentiates resources provided to elderly in long-term care hospitals in Korea.
Since its introduction in Korea, design VE has widely been used as a means to enhance values in the construction industry. However, a greater emphasis is still placed on cost reduction in approach attitudes and performance evaluations on the implementation of design VE. In this regard, this study presented a performance evaluation method for cost, function, and value of VE proposals. Numerical criteria on the increase and decrease of cost and function that can classify the value enhancement type of VE proposals were proposed based on the performance evaluation method. It is expected that the use of numerical criteria for the type classification of VE proposal, and cost and performance evaluation method proposed in this study will make it possible to conduct a clear and more intuitive evaluation of VE proposal. However, it is appropriate to use the numerical criteria as a guideline to apply the new performance evaluation method for VE proposals. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a statistical analysis with a wider range of users after the repeated application of the findings of this study, and thus to carry out research for presenting the numerical criteria for various types of users.

In this paper, a higher-order feedforward neural network called ridge polynomial network (RPN) which shows good approximation capability for nonlnear continuous functions defined on compact subsets in multi-dimensional Euclidean spaces, is presented. This network provides more efficient and regular structure as compared to ordinary higher-order feedforward networks based on Gabor-Kolmogrov polynomial expansions, while maintating their fast learning property. the ridge polynomial network is a generalization of the pi-sigma network (PSN) and uses a specialform of ridge polynomials. It is shown that any multivariate polynomial can be exactly represented in this form, and thus realized by a RPN. The approximation capability of the RPNs for arbitrary continuous functions is shown by this representation theorem and the classical weierstrass polynomial approximation theorem. The RPN provides a natural mechanism for incremental function approximation based on learning algorithm of the PSN. Simulation results on several applications such as multivariate function approximation and pattern classification assert nonlinear approximation capability of the RPN.
The techniques to recycle and reuse plastics attract public attention. These public attraction and needs result in improving the recycling technique. However, the identification technique for black plastic wastes still have big problem that the spectrum extracted from near infrared radiation spectroscopy is not clear and is contaminated by noise. To overcome this problem, we apply Raman spectroscopy to extract a clear spectrum of plastic material. In addition, to improve the classification ability of fuzzy Radial Basis Function Neural Networks, we apply supervised learning based clustering method instead of unsupervised clustering method. The conditional fuzzy C-Means clustering method, which is a kind of supervised learning based clustering algorithms, is used to determine the location of radial basis functions. The conditional fuzzy C-Means clustering analyzes the data distribution over input space under the supervision of auxiliary information. The auxiliary information is defined by using k Nearest Neighbor approach.
