Characteristics of Schizandra chinensis BAILLON collected were investigated the development of the new varieties and the results obtained are as follows: Flowering time of Schizandra chinensis varieties were varied from May 6 to 15. In petal base colors 70% were light pinked-colored, 23% were dark pinkcolored and 23% were white-colored respectively and number fruit set per node are 2 to 3 and 60% of plants were flower set and length of diameter of female flower longer than those of male flowers. Among 155 plants investigated, 125 plants showed below 40% of fruit setting and average fruit setting were 26%, 83% of plants were below 12mm, white 17% were above 12.1mm in fruit length, 100 dry fruit weight was 13.2g on average showing significant variation among plants. Average values of major characteristics of populations of collected varieties were 82.5 in number of fruit set, 68.3 in number of fruits 68.3mm in length of fruit set, 22.8mm in width of fruit set, 10.7mm in length of granule 103.1g in dry fruit weight per plants and ratio of dry fruit was 26.8% respectively.
This study was carried out to determine the effect of fruit-set position and number of fruit set per plant on yield and quality including netting in "Super VIP" melon cultivated in spring season. 1) In training system of one fruit per plant, index of netting was acceptable, regardless of the node position of fruit-set. The higher node order of fruit set was, the heavier, longer, bigger in diameter the fruit set was, and the thicker the flesh was. However, soluble suger content and storability was decreased with increased node order. 2) In training system of two fruit per plant, the higher the fruit-set position in node order was, the better the netting index, fruit quality including fruit weight, length, diameter, and thickness of flesh were, but there was no difference in storability. 3) Fruits produced by one-fruit-per-plant training were superior to those produced by two-fruit-per-plant training in maker quality including netting, sugar content, stcrability. The fruit set on 12th node in one-fruit-per-plant training were the best in market quality. 4) Yield was increased by two-fruit-per-plant training.

A fundamental study was conducted to obtain the basic data involved in nondestructive quality evaluation of the fruit and vegetables. An experimental equipment for ultrasonic propagation characteristics of the fruit and vegetables such as radish , carrot , potato, and apple was set up and also power spectrum analysis system of an ultrasonic wave through the fruit and vegetables was set up. The velocity and attenuation of ultrasonic wave through the tissue specimens from the fruit and vegetables were measured and analyzed. The elastic modulus and density by the mechanical method currently used were compared with those using by ultrasonic method. The ultrasonic tranit time was almost linearly increased with the length of the specimens and attenuation of ultrasonic was mainly affected by the internal flbrous structure of the products. The regression equation was derived from the highly correlated experimental variables.
This study investigated the effects of using a pollen suspension for artificial pollination on the labor costs, fruit set, and fruit quality attributes of 'Fuji' apples. The pollen germination rate was 20% in a 20% fructose solution after 6 hours, and the pollen remained stable for 6 hours in the same solution. The king fruit per flower cluster exhibited a normal fruit set, regardless of the treatment. Plus, none of the artificial pollination applications affected the fruit length/diameter ratio, flesh firmness, soluble solids concentration, or titratable acidity in the harvested 'Fuji' apple fruits. However, the labor savings were significantly higher with the pollen suspension treatment when compared with the cotton swab or love-touch. Therefore, the labor cost was four-fold less in use of pollen suspension than in use of cotton swab for artificial pollination.

Three highbush blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum cvs. Bluecrop, Coville, and Northland) grown in an open field and in a rain shelter were compared to evaluate the potential benefits of rain-sheltering systems on growth and fruit quality. Shrubs grown in rain shelter flowered 5-14 days earlier and were in full bloom earlier than those in the open field. All three cultivars set fruit by nearly 90% of flowers when they were grown in the open field, but was markedly reduced when they were grown in the rain shelter, to approximately 50% for 'Bluecrop' and 'Coville'. Fruit sets ratio of 'Northland' grown in the in the rain shelter was 14.5. Fruit from greenhouse-grown 'Northland' were larger, heavier, and had more seeds per berry. Soluble sugar content (SSC) of fruits varied both with the cultivars and growing conditions. SSC of fruits grown in the greenhouse was higher in 'Bluecrop' compared to that grown in the field, but this pattern was reversed in 'Northland'. Titratable acid was significantly higher in fruits from rain shelter-grown shrubs of both 'Bluecrop' and 'Northland' than in fruits from open field-grown shrubs (P < 0.05), although there was no difference in TA with respect to growing conditions for 'Coville'. The number of seed per fruit, fruit length and diameter, weight, SSC, and TA were similar in 'Coville' shrubs grown in the open field and the rain shelter. Fruit firmness of 'Bluecrop', 'Coville', and 'Northland' was higher in the rain shelter than in the open field. 'Coville' and 'Northland' fruits harvested in the open field had higher blue chroma than those harvested in the rain shelter. However, this pattern was reversed for 'Bluecrop'. On the whole, sheltering from rain affected most fruit characteristics of the three cultivars differently. Therefore, suitable blueberry cultivars for the rain shelter should be chosen by purpose.
Effect of gibberllin on the breaking of bud dormancy of root and growth of aerial parts were investigated under laboratory and field condition for the prolongation of shoot growth duration, shortening of fruit bearing age and the increase of root yield. Drop application of GA (0.5ml of 50ppm) on rhizome of one year old root broke bud dormancy better than by low temperature. Soaking for one hour of one year old roots which wintered in the field in GA (50-200ppm) greatly accelerated the emergence of new buds while kinetin was only effective at low level (50ppm). GA substantially increased stem length in early stage and petiole length later on while kinetin increased stem diameter. Under the field condition with polythylene film tunnel (PET) in early spring the soaking in GA (50ppm for 1 hour) of rhizome of 4 year old root with replanting and dropping GA (50ppm, 1ml) on rhizome without replanting brought earlier emergence (29days) in comparison with that in the usual field. PET alone caused 14 day-early emergence. GA increased the length of stem and petiole only in early stage and replanting decreased only petiole length in later stage. Soaking in GA with replanting caused the Pronounced decrease in peduncle length, percentage of (ruin set and dry weight of reproductive organ (fruits and peduncle). Dropping without replanting showed significant decrease only in dry weight of reproductive organ. Fruit maturing was 20 days earlier than in usual held with little difference between GA and PET. It is well expected that GA could be used for early emergence of bud, shortening of root dormancy period, thinning of fruit and higher root yield according to application amount and methods.
This experiment was carried out to compare growth and fruit setting characteristics in ten winter-planted paprika (Capsicim annuum L.) cultivars. Five red line paprika cultivars ('Maduro', 'Maranello', 'Nagano', 'Sirocco' and 'Special') and five yellow line paprika cultivars ('Coletti', 'Sven', 'Thialf', 'Volante' and 'Zagato') were used for this study. The experiment was performed for 42 weeks, from winter of 2013 to autumn of 2014. Based on the growth stages of paprika, growth characteristics were investigated six times, and each investigation was categorized from group 1 through group 6. The relative internode ratio showed a normal range at the early growth stage, but tended to gradually decline as growth progressed. This trend was greater in red line paprika than in yellow line paprika. Among the cultivars used for this experiment, 'Special' and 'Zagato' showed growth inhibition, whereas 'Maranello' and 'Volante' kept a balanced growth during summer cultivation. The fruit set percentage in yellow paprika was 10.8% higher than in red paprika, while the number of branches in yellow paprika was 4.1% less than in red paprika. When measured after the full fruiting age, from June to July, the number of fruit set in group 4 was much lower in 'Sirocco' and 'Coletti' than in any of the other cultivars, indicating that they were more sensitive to the growth environment during the rainy season. These findings suggest that 'Maranello', 'Nagano', 'Sven', 'Thialf', and 'Volante' could be effectively used for summer cultivation in a high-plastic-film greenhouse, and 'Maranello', 'Special', 'Volante', and 'Zagato' could be good candidates for a low-plastic-film greenhouse.

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai) is sensitive to low temperature and shows retarded growth under 10℃. Although early transplanting guarantees higher returns, it requires cost and labor to maintain the appropriate temperature for plant growth. Therefore, cultivars tolerant to chilling stress is necessary to reduce the cost and labor requirements. The purpose of this study is to analyze data on plant growth and fruit enlargement under continuous chilling night temperature to develop new cultivars tolerant to chilling temperature. Two cultivars expected to have chilling tolerance and another cultivar sensitive to chilling temperature were grown in greenhouses with chilling and optimal night temperature conditions. In the early growth stage after transplanting, the cultivars expected to have chilling tolerance showed better vine length, fresh weight and dry weight. However, one of the tolerant cultivars showed significantly lower vine length, leaf length and width, and petiole length than the sensitive cultivar during pollination period and later growth stage, showing genotype specific responses. The fruit length, width, and weight were also significantly lower in the tolerant cultivar. The fruit set ratio was significantly higher in the chilling sensitive cultivar than the two tolerant cultivars. These results suggest that the present chilling tolerant cultivars in watermelon were selected based on their performance in the early growth stage, and further studies on chilling tolerance in different growth and development stages are required to develop cultivars adapted to various forcing cultivation systems.
In this study, we evaluated the changes of fruit quality indices during fruit development and ripening in Korean new pear cultivar 'Changjo', developed from a cross between 'Tama' and '81-1-27' ('Danbae' ${\times}$ 'Okusankichi') in 1995 and named in 2009, to determine appropriate harvest time and to enhance the market quality and broaden the cultivation area. The fruits of 'Changjo' pears harvested from 132 days after full bloom (DAFB) to 160 DAFB. Fruit growth and quality indices were monitored at 1 week interval by measuring fruit weight, length, diameter, firmness, and taste related quality indices. The calculated fruit fresh weight increased continuously with fruit development and reached to an average of 594g on Sep. 20 (160 DAFB). The ratio of length to diameter declines as fruit maturation progress, resulting in 0.898 for ripe fruit stage as a round oblate shape. Flesh firmness of 'Changjo' pears showed over 30N until 153 DAFB and then decreased abruptly with fruit ripening, reaching a final level of about 26.44N on 160 DAFB. Starch content of fruit sap was also decreased abruptly after 146 DAFB which decreased almost half of the fruits harvested at 139 DAFB. In parallel with the decrease of flesh firmness, ethanol insoluble solids (EIS) content decreased sharply with fruit ripens, only 50% of EIS was detected on the fruits harvested on 160 DAFB when compared to that of the fruits harvested on 139 DAFB (Aug. 30). The maximum value of soluble solids contents was observed in the fruits harvested on 153 DAFB, resulting in $14.2^{\circ}Brix$. The changes of skin color difference $a^*$ which means loss of green color occurred only after 139 DAFB, coincide with the decrease of SPAD value of the fruit skin. The sugars of the 80% ethanol soluble fraction consisted mainly of fructose, sorbitol, glucose and sucrose, also increased during maturation and ripening. Fructose and sucrose contents were larger than those of glucose and sorbitol in flesh tissues. These results were explained that stored starch is converted to soluble sugars during fruit maturation, mainly in fructose and sucrose increasing the sweetness of this cultivar. Total polyphenols were increased up to middle of fruit maturation (146 DAFB) and then decreased continuously until the end of fruit maturation. Consequently, our results suggested that the commercial harvest time of 'Changjo' pears should not be passed 153 DAFB and late harvest of this cultivar would not good for quality maintenance during shelf-life. As a result of the post-harvest low-temperature acclimation experiment during the short-term transportation period, fruits harvested at 146 DAFB tended to maintain higher firmness after 14 days of simulated marketing at $25^{\circ}C$ compared to fruits harvested at 153 DAFB regardless of temperature set. And, the slower the rate of decrease to the final transport temperature of $5^{\circ}C$, the higher the incidence of internal browning and ethylene production. Therefore, in order to suppress the physiological disorder and to maintain the fruit quality when exporting to Southeast Asia in the 'Chanjo' pears, it is desirable to lower the temperature of the fruits within a short time after harvest and to set the harvest time before 146 days after full bloom.
In this study, we observed differences in the fruit body genesis in with seasonal changes. The mushrooms generated different spines even when under same environmental conditions in equivalent growth chambers during different seasons. The growth chamber conditions were set at $18^{\circ}$, 1000 ppm CO and 95% humidity for uniform primordium formation. Following this, the humidity was reduced to 85% during growth and development. The characteristics of the fruit body were measured: yield (weight), length (size), hardness, and chromaticity. Each measure was relatively compared owing standard data for. We investigated the environmental factors to assess the cause of variation in fruit body. Change in temperature and humidity were especially focused on, apart from climate that can affect mushroom growth. It was observed that temperature and humidity both influence fruit body growth. Not the absolute value of the elevation, there was a change of climate which the temperature is lowered and lowered the humidity can be assumed that the changes in the environmental conditions inside the growth chamber the mushroom growth.
